I get pumped to see each film everytime and I'm left dumbstruck at how overrated each of them is... just plain unsatisfying once the end credits appear. Tobey Maguire's acting/line delivery is HORRIBLE... emotionless and/or forced. He was great in Seabiscuit... why can't he be great in Spider-Man movies? The effects make the movie borderline The Incredibles... which in the animation world is excellent, but in the real world of live action is terrible. The ONLY good thing in my eyes is James Franco as Harry. That is the ONE aspect of the franchise that is pure and full of depth. Everything Peter goes through is handled with extreme cliche. Maybe it's just Tobey and the effects overall. Who knows? But everytime, like now as I am once again thinking "Wow, this COULD be better", the movie comes out bland. I'm no hater at all. They are not FUCKING HORRIBLE (as most TBers in their black or white world would say) by any means. Just nowhere near the quality in acting, story, and effects along the lines of Batman Begins and the X-Men movies. And hell, even Superman Returns to a lesser extent. SR fucked up by slow pacing and lack of a better villian/storyline. But the acting was there. The effects were the best! The casting was right for the most part (I'm on the fence with Lois... she wasn't bad casting, just could have been better). Anyways, Spider-Man just doesn't do it for me. Yet.

I Like The Spiderman Movies
by Barron34
Feb 6th, 2007
10:44:43 PM
Some may disagree, but that is just my opinion. I think Raimi was just an excellent choice to direct these movies. They have just the right mix of fun and pathos for the character, and they are really true to the spirit of the comic books.*****I was never a huge Spidey fan, but I love Marvel comics (Grew up on them) and I'm glad that Raimi's Spiderman movies have done so well, for it's own sake, but also for the fact that their success will now allow other Marvel comics characters to be put on film.*****I am hoping that a good Captain America movie will be made (in WWII period, or split between WWII and modern times), and have my fingers crossed for Favreau's take on Iron Man (another favorite character).*****It's funny that Topher Grace has been cast in this movie as Eddie Brock. Back when SPIDERMAN was being developed, I joked that Topher Grace and his THAT 70s SHOW co-star Laura Prepon would make a good Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson. I was only half kidding about Prepon, though. She is almost a dead-ringer for the Mary Jane Watson character from the comics. And Topher Grace had the same skinny nerd look as the Parker character. Anyway, just funny that he should end up in one of these Spiderman movies. Maybe if Tobey MacGuire declines to make anymore Spiderman movies they will recast with Topher as Peter Parker. You know the studio will want to continue making Spiderman movies even if the principals (MacGuire, Dunst, Raimi) do not sign on for more. It's too much of a cash cow.

I like the first two Spiderman movies, but I hate to see this becoming just another cash cow for the studio. Why is it that, whenever something great comes along, it gets run into the ground with countless sequels? Does anyone out there think that they WON'T keep making sequels (with or without Sam) until they can't squeeze another nickel out of Spiderman?
The problem I have with Spider-Man is...(redux)

11:38:35 PM
....that it's too damn entertaining. And let's not forget just how much Raimi nails the character by sticking as close to the source material as possible with a few necessary adaptations (like organic-webshooters and the like), while still delivering an entertaining movie. What's up with that? I mean, that just rubs me the wrong way, to no end. Don't even get me started on how Tobey MacGurie nails the whole Peter Parker as-a-down-on-his-luck everyday geek just like he is in the comics. I mean, what were they thinking. This isn't a Superhero movie. How the crap did they make all that money anyway, puling crap like this? No, if you want to do a Superhero movie right, then you have to make wholesale changes to everything from stupid costume designs ( turning him into some kind of leather-bound fetish-freak with silly looking boots and a laughably small insignia) to idiotic changes to his core character traits by making him.......oh I don't know, let's say....a stalker, and...er.....a....deadbeat dad who sulks and is moody all the time, with inconsistent and illogical vulnerability to his Achilles heel, which only works when it "feels" like it. That would work. That would be a Superhero movie I would pay to see.

I mean, who cares if it struggles at the box-office to break even and takes three times as long as "Night at the motherfrakking Museum" to break $200 million at the Box Office.Who cares? Right? Who gives a rat's ass if it alienates a majority of the fanbase, with its idiotic revisions and sets the entire franchise back further than the previous movie that sent it into development hell for all those years, in the first place.

This whole sticking-close-to-the-source-m aterial thing just doesn't do it for me. We need silly revisions that don't vibe with the comics, crappy ( read: booooring) story-lines that don't make sense, annoying supporting actresses, and moody-deadbeat-dad-stalker lead characters, to really hit the spot. Anyways, Spider-Man just doesn't do it for me. Yet.

(......oh and in case you missed it,I enjoy being a contrarian blockhead just for the sake of being different; even when 90% of the crap I write makes less sense while making me look like an idiot. - Shout out to moto)

Is that Tobey Maguire in no way captures the Peter Parker from the comics - and yeah, it's the writing, too. I'm hoping that in 3 we at least get a scene with some actual spideyquips and not just some mopey guy who's depressed and cries because he's got superpowers. I have certainly been entertained by the films, but they just seem to be missing something. Make fun of Superman all you want, but at least he doesn't cry like a wuss. He keeps it nice and repressed like a real man should. I'm also joking. I don't really compare Spiderman and Superman. I like 'em both and don't feel the need to trash one to promote the other, which also puts me in the minority on this site.

I am going to have to agree with the comments on Spiderman being good but the acting was choppy. The second movie , the actors did a much better job. And stop hating on Supes. They did a decent job and Singer will do better the second time around just like the X2. I definately favor Superman Returns' acting. But in the end Supes, The Bat, and Spidey are the top three superhero movies i will always go see no matter what... Add Hellboy to that list also. What an amazing comic book adaptation. Ron Perlman is a fine example of perfect casting.

That is what worries me about this one... too many characters/villins and stuff going on at once. The movie sounds bogged down and congested already. If it's the last Spidey film, I guess going out this way would make sense but... I hope they don't plan more of these if they plan to just shove too much into them that it makes it tiring to watch.

I loved the 1st two installments. I've read Spiderman since I was a child and I have to give credit to Sam Raimi for doing a wonderful job with the character. I think the 3rd one will be the best one yet. I have high hopes since the 1st two did not disappoint.
However I think the series should come to an end after this installment because I fear it will get stale by the 4th movie and chances are all the original people involved in these first three would not be involved.
Curious to as what bit part Bruce Campbell will have in this installment.

Acting? Definitely. Directing? Maybe. Story and visuals? I don't agree. At all. But that's such a subjective thing anyway, so it's not like it matters much what either of us think. Although I tend not to listen to anyone who says Tobey Maguire "doesn't try." Ohhh, I get it. Because he's got like, a monotone voice and stuff. Maguire works incredibly hard on these films. This is apparent enough for most people by looking at the finished product, but since you reflexively hate a Spider-Man whose voice is like, monotone and stuff, suffice it to that I seriously doubt he would put his physical safety (what with the back problems and all) in such constant risk if he didn't give a shit about what he was doing.

...Topher Grace would have made a better Peter Parker, but Tobey has done an ok job with the scripts he's been giving.

The first Spider-Man film was good but not great (damn stupid Green Goblin costume).

Spider-Man 2 was a massive improvement. Doc Ock was great but there were still a few issues.

Spider-Man 3 should be good and I dont seen it being any worse than the first 2. I would be annoyed if Venom is only in the last 5 minutes.

Just for the record the first X-Men movie was boring, second X-Men film the first 10 minutes were brilliant the rest boring. and X-Men 3 worked well as an action film but rushed an important story to the franchise which was it's downfall.

The entire second act would have been about Peter Parker scouring eBay for used red and blue scuba outfits, which he would then stitch together on a Singer sowing machine which he borrowed from Aunt May (Aunt May would also have a ten minute expository scene where she recalls the delightful yard sale where she first bought said sowing machine). The act would reach its peak as we watch Peter struggle with the injection moulding process for his raised webbing, not to mention trying on various types of underwear so as to minimise VPL when suited up.

I'm sorry, Batman Begins, I thought you were pretty good, but you annoy me for some reason.

I'm looking forward to The Dark Knight quite a bit. Now that the heavy lifting is out of the way, I'm confident that the brothers Nolan will give us a more enjoyable story in part two. What a shame part one wasn't called The Dark Knight - Batman Begins is a horrible title.

I have great admiration for the Spider-Man swings scenes. I don't understand this complaint about 'inferior' effects. I keep my inner geek in check most of the time, but he goes Spider-crazy every time Peter Parker goes sailing through the New York canyons. I think I could happily watch that final swing from the first one on a loop and never get bored with it.

...or about Heath's ability to play the character. And the news that Katie Holmes won't be back for Batman Continues to Begin is just more reason for me to call it my most anticipated comic book movie of the year. I'm sure Spidey 3 will be entertaining. The other two certainly were. In fact, I think it's a real testament to Raimi's skill as a director and the visual effects team that I enjoy these movies as much as I do DESPITE feeling Tobey was completely miscast. I loved Tobey in Wonder Boys. But Peter Parker he ain't. Still, everything else in these movies is working so well that I accept him and just grit my teeth through his mouth-full-of-prozac-MacMumble s delivery of the not-quite-right dialogue. When you plan to cover up your hero's face for most of your movie, you should hire an actor who can emote with his voice. But, again, doesn't ruin the franchise for me.

Should there be? Probably not. But since when has Hollywood ever put a halt on lucrative franchises? Sony is sitting on a gold mine. It doesn't matter if Maguire, Raimi, and Dunst leave; they will all be replaced (easily). Bond, Batman, Superman, and Star Wars have all gone through personnel changes, and while the quality of the films varied, the dollars kept rolling in. A Spidey film is an automatic license to print money.

Spidey 3 + 4 Filmed back-to-back
by roachy

Come on! They've been filming Spidey 3 on and off for an ETERNITY now. Sam Raimi introduces a character he doesnt like but fanboys love...in what is seemingly a small role(at least the trailers allude to this). And all the cast say they're not up for making more. It doesnt make sense. Sony used the 3 picture contracts to make two back to back as one picture thus fulfilling the contract and getting an extra movie. Expect a Venom-centric movie in Summer 08.

But Nolan needs to learn how to do better action scenes, he's just not an action director. That fight in the warehouse almost gave me a seizure. Between that and katie Holmes the movie went down a star for me. Everything else was great, especially the near perfect cast. I just hope Nolan directs and edits better action scenes for The Dark Knight.

I have to agree with many of you. Tobey doesn't make a great spider-man. His "funny" lines need more spark. They are dull. There is more energy from those lines in the comics than in the movie. However, I think that his Parker is spot on. And I still think MJ was casted totally wrong. Dunst is pretty but not MJ hot.

And for the most part, in SP1 and SP2 you can tell when it is CGI and when it is a live person. It is the animation.

I still enjoyed the movies though, never bought the 2nd one. I'd rather invest that money on comics.

I wonder why Schumacker wants to do a sandman movie. Isn't sandman already on this movie? Weird.

I'll be seing Spider-Man Begins to Return in the theaters anyways. I wonder if Venom and Sandman merged it would feel like Floam.

Misnomer. . . Regarding the "sandman effects"
by ZeroCorpse
Feb 7th, 2007
11:57:49 AM
According to various articles about the making of this movie, they used a variety of real materials to make sand. Most of it is not CGI, as Sam wanted to avoid it looking too much like "The Mummy". So that "unrealistic sand" you saw was most likely real sand, or real materials that are the same size and color as sand. -- This reminds me of people who see "Revenge of the Sith" and say that the vehicles those Clone Troopers actors are riding on look like CGI, without realizing that all the Clone Troopers were computer animated, too.

although I think the other SFX look to be very cool. I knew that the black goo wouldnt be a problem these days, but I dont think CGI is ready for realistic sand. I dont even think that SM3 sand looks any better than Mummy. Maybe even worse. Am sure it wont matter come May though - the cartoony appearance of these films kind of adds to the charm anyhow.
What if "THE ONE FILM GOD", MICHEAL BAY DID SPIDEY?
by apolo_sputnik

If Micheal Bay made Spiderman, spiderman would not get his powers from a spider. He would not have a costume, he would not have any super powers, there would be no super villans, No Peter Parker and no Mary Jane. Sounds great eh? Oh, and the dialogue would be rancid, there would be no direction, the story would be unbearably atrocious but at least there would be lots of "BOOM" to entertain the brainless monkey masses. Sounds awesome, doesn't it? Then he would make a music video about how awesome he was! Spiderman fans are lucky. Transformer fans get Bay. I think we got the short end of the stick there.

Where possible, Raimi had THC wear prosthetic "sand weapons" on his arm and he'd have to really swing them around. On second unit in Cleveland, they had lots of bags of play sand at the ready, usually just to scatter about (the bank truck sequence). Inside the armored truck, they had a one-arm stunt guy in a Spidey suit punching Sandman with his nub, so that it would appear to go "through" him. This stuff, naturally, was touched up with CGI. But Raimi didn't cheat if he didn't have to. A lot of this will be old-school action.

Spider-Man I was flawed (the Goblin just didn't work visually and Defoe was as miscast as Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face, and the cgi was BAD).

But II was great, other than those ugli-rific Tobey emotional close-up shots...ugly.

Two scenes in that movie are as great as any scene in any Super-Hero movie ever. The scene after he has stopped the train, and when MJ first sees him without a mask. Brilliant.

And if the spoiler up above is true, and I hope it is for the sake of the story, then there's no reason III shouldn't be great.

Also, Venom will be in the movie for a bit longer than 5 minutes, I'm not sure how long, but rest assured. I don't think he will be the villain of the 4th film, though, so expect that storyline to be at least semi-wrapped up this film.

I don't think sandman and venom are related, actually.

I think they're using sandman as temptation for dark spidey. Will Spidey seek the route of revenge knowing that this man killed his father? When he's symbiote spidey, he might, and he'll have to fight that impulse.

Dark Knight foibles (or lack of)
by kafka07
Feb 7th, 2007
03:25:19 PM
Yeah Nolan should definitely make better action scenes for Dark Knight. I think he overdoes it with this "realism" crap. This is the movies. The guy dresses up as a bat. It doesn't have to be THAT real. Nolan and company face a huge challenge: making the Joker work. Nicholson's Joker may not be the type of Joker I want to see in the Dark Knight, BUT they were able to make that Joker work. With this "realism" I can't imagine how they're not just going to downgrade and simplify the Joker into merely being a serial killer. BTW I think they really crapped out on the Scarecrow character, wasn't even scary or creepy at all. But at least Goyer is gone for the Dark Knight script, so the dialogue will be better. I do have hope for TDK, but I have doubts too. Oh, sorry, I was supposed to say something about Spiderman 3. Go get 'em tiger.

This has been listed on Superherohype.com and it's boards for a few days now. C'mon Harry... what happened to your "network"? A year ago, people said Sandman and Venom, and you giggled with glee "knowing" from your "sources" that it would be Electro and Sandman. Your Transformers and Pirates of the Caribbean news are all pics taken from the boards of other sites, and the rest of your "news" is promotional material sent to you BY THE STUDIOS. C'mon! What happened to that independent, devil-may-care attitude from the '90s? Back when you didn't care who you pissed off (studio-wise), coz you were here for your fellow movie fans. This site just regugitates the stories from other sites, throws in a few mediocre (or obscene) reviews, and then has the nerve to say it is "The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news." I know you'll not comment on this, in fact, you or one of the mods will delete this probably, but seriously, look at this site objectively, and remember how it was back in '95/'96 and ask yourself "what happened"?

I can't understand how people can complain about he effects in these films. It's not like anyone comes up with a good alternative. It's not like they could be done with the same dynamic movement and camera angles practically. There where tons of films made before cgi which never looked even remotely realistic but we still all suspended our disbelief and enjoyed the aspects of the film which really matter. The art design on the Green Goblin was in my opinion a mistake but I feel there are many aspects of comic book movies which will never look good on screen. I actually think that Spidey looks better when in CGI and the real problem is that when we see him in the suit after a big action scene it often looks slightly strange.

Fantastic. I've read comics, but I seem to have an open mind when it comes to comic adaptations, so there are really very few that I don't enjoy in some way (*cough* HULK, ELEKTRA, SUPERMANRETURNS*cough*). Adored both Spidey movies, adored the first two X-men movies, tolerated the third more than I was expecting to (Hugh Jackman and Ian McKellan can do that), and found DareDevil and Fantastic Four cheesy but entertaining. As for this Spidey movie - share the love, y'all. This looks fabulous. I'm a huge fan of Topher Grace AND Tobey Maguire, and seeing them both in the same movie about my favourite super-hero is like some great Fan-God answered my prayers. Thank you, Irradiated-Spider-Jesus! Tobey has been a little on the depressed/subtle side in the first two movies, but he CAN be funny when the situation calls for it. For an example - I give you the first Spider-Man videogame. Tobey Maguire aced all those classic snarky Spider-Man lines - they JUST DIDN'T GIVE HIM ANY IN THE FREAKIN' MOVIE! I am a little worried that it might be overpacked, but I still trust Raimi on this one. I was a little pissed when I first heard about the Sandman-real-murderer storyline (because I felt it took away one of Spider-Man's very real guilts), but now I'm fairly certain that the idea Sandman's the real killer is going to be some sort of red herring, especially since the movie looks like they're going to make the Sandman more sympathetic. I'm also kinda hoping that Topher Grace returns as Venom for the fourth movie. And as for the "Damn You Michael Bay" guy - I have to say, I kinda respect his dedication.

Why do people get mad at the changes they make in movies? You have to understand that they're dealaing with tons, i mean TONS, of spidey material and cant fit all those stories into the movies. So they mix it up to make it interesting. As long as it stays true to the characters and there is a sense of familiarity with the story, then it shouldnt be a problem. So what if Sandman didnt really kill Uncle Ben? They had to personally connect him to spiderman and that was the best way to do it. If you notice, every villain in each spiderman movie has a personal connection to Peter. SP 1 - Harry's Father. SP 2- Peter meets Dr. Octavius and gets to know his family, SP3 - Sandman killed Uncle Ben (They shouldn't have told us that story twist, it makes the movie better). I'm just pissed at Phoenix and Wolverine, and just about all the characters in X3. Phoenix didnt have to be an alien spirit, but they couldve came up with a better storyline. And a Phoenix has FIRE. She's not a vampire zombie chic. Wolverine is not Cyclops the team leader, and do something to Halle Berry b/c she's the worst Storm screwup. As long as you stay true to the characters and their similar stories from the comics, then fans will be ok.
