Good news because DAVID GOYER SUCKS!

You heard me, David Goyer is the most overrated of all superhero screenwriters. And his script for Batman Begins is nothing to be proud of. Boring script for an overrated movie.

hollywood is realising that really isnt worth the hassle making these kinds of movie. I saw the trailer for Ghostrider today with the Last king of scotland. That one is gonna tank. big time and for one reason: nicholas"elvis" cage. and it cost too much to make these novies.

...so the word seems to be that they are shelving this entire project for now... just asking, was The Flash really ever that big a property anyway? Also, does anyone think the lackluster quality of Superman Returns might have led to this decision? ...perhaps more so than anyone attached to developing a script?

WB looked at how Supes Returns came out and thought, "Wow, this is the biggest superhero name we own and the fans turned on the product"... (rightfully so, the story was all over the road)..."if Bryan Singer couldn't make 'em love *that* movie can *anyone* make 'em love The Flash?"...

Halo was going to be something special but the studio just wanted a cheap crappy AvP-style movie so the talent took flight, the same has happened here I expect. In the end the studio just sees 'a video game movie' 'a comic book movie'
I always thought this would be a tough sell

Given that most of the cool stuff he does is at a speed that the human eye cannot follow. There's only so many times you can have a guy moving freely while everyone else is stuck in place like statues before it would become boring.

Even if you slowed him down to the point where you'd see a red blur, the effect they'd use would probably be something like the one they use on Smallville whenever Clark runs, which I've never been very fond of.

Maybe this is another case of material that can only be done properly in the medium that it was created in and DC should focus on putting together a decent Green Lantern script. Now there's a property that does have great cinematic potential. But please, not as some kind of 3rd rate Mask comedy rip-off.

right..
by jimmy rabbitte

it would be that Smallville effect or a feature length use of "bullet-time" which has been done to death.

...now the Green Lantern...there's something if done properly could become a true franchise ...definitely agree with that

a better question is what's up with WB & comic books?

WB is fairly lame, wanting perhaps to make every super hero appeal to the teens who don't even know who these heroes are. What made Batman Begins so effective was it was not a kids movie. I am sure his flash script rocked judging by what he said about it last year.

all that potential and perhaps the most mind-numbingly dull superhero movie ever made. I mean, 'BarbWire' had more spark than that...and that mangy, prozac performance by our new lois lane....lame lame lame. The actual superman character was great, but everything else, from the semi-retarded offspring to spacey's DULL performance....zzzzzzzzzz...so rry, fell asleep remembering it. We have Bryan Singer to thank for this
by Immortal_Fish
Feb 3rd, 2007
04:21:44 PM
I suspect that jimmy rabbitte and I part ways on the details behind the reasons why, but that's one TB'er that is dead on the money.

The suits are likely thinking, "If Singer couldn't save Superman (#1 superhero ever and #1 ALLEGED superhero director ever), then who else can make a decent movie with any other hero?" Indeed.

The problem with that train of thought is that it was all of Singer's meddling that finally caught up with him, not that superhero movies are past their prime. Take Raimi's Spider-Man, for example. There is a good case of director meddling that didn't sink the property.

I hope that Ghost Rider will surprise folks and do alright. I doubt it will do huge numbers, but it may be turn enough profit to give the haters lesser things to gripe about, similar to FF, Hulk, and DD. And if GR does okay, WB may be a little disappointed with themselves for letting Goyer go. After all, this was the guy that brought us BB to an extent, which most fans ultimately agree that it treated the source material with respect. Then there's the whole Blade franchise. Love it or hate it, Blade was a 3-picture franchise and TV series. Quite rare. And all thanks in large part to Goyer.

Is there anyway to somehow convince the studios that "comic books" aren't exactly a "genre" anymore? Sweet Jesus, this isn't like saying, "Wow, the smash hit 'Chicago' revitalized the musical genre!" or "Huh, look how 'Casino Royale' brought the Bond franchise back to life!" Talking about how 'Superman Returns' is sinking DC's trust in their product is more like saying, "Wow, 'Silence of the Lambs' really brought movie adaptations of bestselling novels back from the dead. Let's adapt more novels for the big screen!" I mean, I get that superheroes generally fit into a category of storytelling, but what makes Superman work is going to be a far cry from what makes X-Men or 'V for Vendetta' or 'Ghost World' or (etc. etc. etc.) work as films. And all of our bullshit arguing about whether 'X3' was worse or better than 'Supreman Returns' isn't helping anything. We get fixated on which story was "truer" to the source material intead of evaluating the films as individual works of art. I personally disliked 'X3' because it broke the tone of the first two films, which I came to really appreciate. I never read any X-Men comics, so I have no idea if Singer's delicate approach or Ratner's clusterfuck was a better reflection of the X-Men comic world. But the idea that studios would look at how an X-Men film performed relative to a Superman film and conclude (as we're all speculating here) that the weightier, more sophisticated, "adult" storytelling just won't sell ... that just pisses me off. Not just because I'd rather see the "adult" take on Flash instead of the "wowee, look at all the 'splosions!!!!!!" approach, but because I'd like to think they'd stop lumping all the "comics" characters into the "Reliable Stock Characters to Bring Geeks to the Theaters No Matter Who the Fuck We Hire to Write/Direct/Produce" bin. Ugh. Maybe I'm wrong - there's a million reasons why they'd let Goyer off the project, and it's not even a bad thing necessarily. But if they throw another two-bit jack-off fresh from "Employee of the Month" or something, I'll start to think the Golden Age of superhero films we've seen from X-Men 1 & 2 and the Spider-Man series through to Batman Begins and (yeah, I'll say it) Superman Returns is coming to a crashing halt.

It would be cool to bring in Bilson & DeMeo for the movie version! Have them read Goyer's script & if they dig it say they would film it unless Goyer is still involved. This may then Jinx the the project in a good way in that no other directors will touch it cuz it's cool that way. Sort of like with how no one will do Green Hornet, since Kevin Smith left it, cuz the studio won't buddy up to the studio that owns Lone Ranger.

Two things. The public doesn't care about the Flash anyway. He's got no personality. Plus powers are too out there. Goyer isn't a very good writer. Like Batman Begins but hate the over-the-top "villain tries to destroy the city" BS again? That part was Goyer. Thank him for that cliched third act. Whedon off WW would be a good thing if WW was a potential franchise. He's not a good writer (just relies on gimmicky dialogue that comes out of every character). WW would have a big opening and fade fast. She's lame. People would see here for the T&A. Otherwise, she's boring.

Without oyer pushing for Ryna Reynolds as The Flash, now we'll hpefully be more likely to see him play the role he's best suited for- Deadpool (cause, let's face it, there's no one the powers that be would hire him for two different superhero characters). Besides, Deadpool is by far the more fun character of the two, and better suited to Reynolds' delivery.
Two points
by Vern
Feb 4th, 2007
02:10:24 AM
1. Blade

2. Blade II

As far as Batman Begins, I like that movie but I also think it wasn't playing to Goyer's strengths. Watch that movie closely and you can see where he sets it up for badass fight scenes that never happens. For example, he's got Bruce Wayne (Batman) up on a mountain in a temple that's on fire surrounded by ninjas, who he turns on, and he has to escape. Goyer did his job there, he set up what I call the OSIO (oh shit, it's on) moment that is the backbone of all the great action movies. Nolan made a great character movie so it ultimately works, but the dude apparently doesn't do action, so he took these classic OSIO moments that would've led to unforgettable setpieces in the Blade movies and then just skipped over them. Burning temple, ninjas, and then he just slides down the mountain and it goes to the next scene. Oh well.

Anyway, my point is that Goyer was doing his job, give him some credit.

As for the Flash, I don't really give a shit about that one, but I would've watched it if Goyer did it. What I'd really like to see him do is that post-apocalyptic Blade 3 he said he was gonna do before he changed his mind and made the one everybody hates.

Almost as much as I love the Talkbacker name "I Cant Believe I Actually Registered." The Flash was one of my favorites. Barry Allen was a cool character: not angst-ridden whatsover, Spidey wit without the girlfriend troubles, and always late picking up his wife. I read somewhere that when testing the "speed" effect for "Six Million Dollar Man," they had tried filming Lee Majors on a treadmill on the back of a truck before settling on slo-mo. Me, I'd love to see some bullet-time Flash action, some FPOV.

sequences (I'm always shocked people rip on Superman Returns' action and not BB), but it did a great job getting into the character of Batman. The first film (except for maybe the Mask of the Phantasm) was the only movie actually concerned with Batman. I blame all these WB moves on X3. Why, you ask? I think that after that movie studios think all you need is name recognition and some really fake looking action sequences. What they don't realize is that Singer had already done the heavy lifting with the first two movies so that we cared about the characters and allowed X3 to be a major blockbuster even if it sucked. Superhero movies are going the way of the horror film, where they're cheaply produced so they can make back a cheap buck. For shame Warner Brothers, for shame.

01:16:27 PM
Anyone who wants these two as Goyer's replacements needs to read (or try to read) THE FLASH: THE FASTEST MAN ALIVE #1-8, some of the worst FLASH comics ever made. Geoff Johns would be a much better pick, especially if he used Zoom (Hunter Zolomon) as Wally's nemesis for the first film. Other Rogues with film potential...the Mirror Master (Evan McCullough), the Weather Wizard, Savitar, Magenta, and the Thinker (the current digital construct version) immediately spring to mind. Heat Wave and Captain Cold could be fun paired against each other with the Flash caught in the middle, but not until the fourth film or so provided the series gets that far.

...here's what's up at WB...
by genro
Feb 4th, 2007
06:14:36 PM
As concise as I can be - Justice League is now seen as a a smarter investment than a bunch of individual flicks. Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern (which was shifted into stall a few months ago)...as Rabbitte pointed out, the Superman fiasco has made WB re-think the churn-em-out Marvel philosophy. So when Arad made some noise about a possible Avengers flick last year, he got WB's attention. It's the big concept film that sets itself apart from the glut of superhero properties. The Bats franchise will continue, but everything else is a coin toss and depends on who would get involved with the property. In other words, Jessica Biel and Joss Whedon ain't gonna get Wonder Woman greenlit. Del Toro could get Deadman made, but he's going to walk after the Oscars. And Snyder's Watchmen is all based on 300's returns. Odds are *highly* against that film. So whatever "talent-over-star-fucking" impact Batman Begins had, Superman negated it, which is why you're seeing names like Jamie Foxx being thrown about for Bats2. So the choice is either massive SPFX or massive names.

Greatest Flash moment ever. http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=fo_Z527cYbM The fight scene between Flash and Luthor-Braniac comes very close. To the person who says he has the gayest power ever...Depending on which Flash, he can vibrate through solid objects, speed up his fists to deliver a massive punch(es), create a whirlwind...yep...completely boring power right there. Never cared for the idea of Ryan Reynolds in the role. I always thought Jensen Ackles from Supernatural would be a good Flash.
I'm glad...

Do we really need the Flash as a movie? This was the first superhero adaptation that genuinely made me go 'ho-hum'. Put that cash into Lobo instead.

...sometimes it's hard to face up to these facts, but that's how Hollywood is. What's unfortunate is that just because Superman Returns didn't gel together doesn't mean a good Flash film can't be done... but just try getting a studio to front the cash and you'll see how fast they can disappear. With what they'll have to pay out up front to secure top shelf talent, the numbers start to become production obstacles. In the end it's the Flash fans who lose out but the studios are willing to live with slighting them.

Could a Flash movie be a big hit? Does the general public know the character at all? I used to like Flash but I think he, like Green Lantern, is a little too obscure to catch on.

Dump Singer's abortion of a movie, and start all over. I'm glad that Singer had respect for the character, and tried something new. Certainly, it was better than a gay robot and giant spider storyline. But ultimately, it was horrifically boring and terribly miscast. So do it again, this time with a decent storyline (some actual action/fight scenes would be nice, eh?) Then let's have a Green Lantern and/or Green Arrow movie. New characters from the DC stables that have never had their shot. Hells bells, do a Specter movie, or even the Atom. Try something new. Oh, wait, this is Hollywood we're talking about. Never mind.

It appears the magic hex david goyer had on hollywood to rewrite and remake every comic book character into new film franchises, has poped. I sure as fuck hope Dark knight is nothing like Batman Begins. I'm sorry David, for all it's praise, it is a horrible film. I say this out of love

Shawn Levy. Now before the fan boys start to choose thier clubs and pick axe handle. I went to Night at the Mueseum. I know how hated that film is by some if not many but saw it and I liked. I thought it was very entertaining movie. I want to further add something else too. People are entitled to thier opinions. one of the reasons I hate IMdb. Every message on that site is like a mini clique. try and say anything critical about supergirl and you will get living tar kicked out of you. There are some who are now putting thier head above the parapit and say now how awful the film. But to berate and bully someone who doesnt like a film that someone else does is wrong. Despite the fact I think re-doing the pink panther is scariligious. The idea of sequel is horrible. I think the cycle of comic book movies is coming to an end. Hence the fact that thse DC movies are being dumped.

You're right about the numbers..and anyone thinking Levy will get this movie made might as well buy a ticket for Snyder's Watchmen tomorrow. In other words, these flicks are kept in pre-production so the big bosses can show a full slate to the shareholders - "look, we're making movies"!. But it doesn't mean anyone's being cut a check.

being a filmmaker. The pressure must be huge. You start off Indy and then slowly you get lured into the studio system. This site starts of feteing you as cool and then once you become a player, this site targets you and goes out thier way to dump on you from a great height, querying your sexuality amongst other things, calling you a hack etc. I couldnt imagine a worse job then to be a filmmaker. Edgar wright will in time get the same treatment. at the moment he is being treated as cool by this site. one fuck up is all it will take. He will sign a big deal with a movie studio that film will bomb and he will be tarred. and from then on him and his films will be personae no grata. it always happens.
I wouldn't be at all surprised...

...in the wake of the lukewarm reception Superman Returns received, to see DC stall or shelve all of its other character flicks and focus on the ol' one-hero-at-a-time approach. Batman seems to be doing well now. They can cross promote the ever-loving fuck out of that until the movies come to a logical, symmetrical conclusion (I'd prefer they keep it a trilogy) or until someone comes along and suck out all the feeling for a fourth or fifth installment. Has anyone heard anything on Superman Returns Again or whatever Singer's calling his planned sequel?

Either they fuck with you endlessly and second guess you in a roomful of people who can't agree with each other, let alone you. OR they surrender all right to have input and just let you do whatever you want. The middle ground of giving a filmmaker useful notes and insight seems to be unachievable. Goyer and others get too much help, and Singer gets too little (how many millions more do you suppose that picture would have earned from middle america if they'd had the sense to put in one line about Lois and Supes having some sort of Kryptonian quasi-marriage so it didn't have to come off as just some one night fuckfest?

...of all the many problems SUperman Returns had, the fact that Supes and Lois weren't married when they bumped uglies really isn't one of them. Heck, the violations of the film's own logic and physical laws were far more distracting than any possible moral ramifications of a hybrid baby being born out of wedlock. How many alien invasion movies do you need to see before you understand: The aliens aren't about commitment. They're here to impregnate our women and then fly back off into space without a care in the world. Stupid lucky aliens.
Flash not a viable or interesting character?

His powers are lame? Why, because Superman can do many of the same things and then some? If speed force leaves people disinterested, then why is it that DC, Marvel, and all the rest tend to have several such characters in their roster?

Something that goes overlooked by many -- Unlike most heroes, here you also have at least four major variants to run with instead of only one. Don't like Barry Allen? Then pick Wally West or another Flash. Few superheroes have such an option, such as Green Lantern.

The Flash is a character with a rich and diverse history that has been around since the 40's. He's found his way into all forms of media since. Someone's gotta at least recognize him if not like him. YOU may not like the character, but your own interests likely diverge from the mass appeal. And that's a healthy thing.

GREEN LANTERN

first off, I'm English and I'd say 95% of the UK poulation has no idea who the green lantern is. Of course they know Superman, Spiderman & Batman. Because of the TV show most already knew The Hulk, a few others too maybe like Captain America, X-Men, F4, Iron Man, but to say The original line up Of the JLA is as well known as most of Marvel's characters is bollocks, not around the world in any case. However i'd like to see a Green Lantern movie done properly myself. I really like the idea of the first one introducing that alien chap and him handing the ring over to Hal Jordan and then any sequels focusing on the others, Guy Gardener would be really interesting to show on film with his personality and how it clashes with Hal Jordan. Maybe a reason why it won't make the screen as a 'serious' movie is the basic premise, i think it would be quite difficult to show this stuff in cinemas and expect people to take any of it seriously. I mean, they had to change the X Men's suits to just black leather numbers, even Superman's cape was made less red so he looked a bit cooler and less Gay.Try explaing to someone who knows very little about comic books the Green Lantern. He does sound a bit rubbish. He's got a Lantern. Nice one. (did i mention it was Green?) I'd like to see a flash movie too but it's pretty frickin certain that they'll get it wrong.
No loss.

He's on a ton of superhero films, and I don't picture him doing a more lighthearted film which is what Flash should be. In fact, I'm not sure there is a way to do Flash other than campy. He's just not a serious character. When I think of a Flash movie, the first thing I want to see is Gorilla Grodd.

I'm just worried that this means that Warner Brothers is going to do one of their stupid, middle-of-the-road, mildly funny, movies that has very little to avtually do with the character as he is known to fans. Take Under-stupid-what the heck were they thinking-dog. This is the kind of crap that they should abort at the very early stages of the game. For insance, SmallVille should never have made it past the talking stage...
