And in response, will the studio go nuts and hire Bryan Singer and the Wonder Twins to produce the reboot of Trek all metro'ized with all the quality concern going towards making the most to-die-for Starfleet uniforms eva? Pfff... just hire either JMS or RDM to do this reboot, and hire Gerard Butler for Scotty.

No offense meant, but just like any other job situation where someone has been taken off a high profile project (or even been fired outright) pretty much the FIRST thing that people will always do is deny it and claim its just a rumor, all to buy themselves some breathing room while they try to shift onto a new project (or find a whole new job) to save some personal face -- not to mention (and just as importantly) buy themselves some time to put out their own version about what "really happened" (ie. spin doctor it to their own advantage). And speaking as someone who lives and works out in LA and La-la-land, let me assure you creative egos out here get bruised at the drop of a hat and the spin doctoring flies so fast and furious you have to carry an umbrella at all times just to avoid the ever-flying bullshit.

So is JJ still on TREK? I'll assume so simply because Hollywood rumors are notoriously false for the most part and people out here love to spread shit simply for the sake of spreading shit. Seriously, to anyone who has never lived or worked here, this is one SERIOUSLY mean-spirited town with some pretty mean-spirited fucks, and any chance to tear down another person, for any reason at all, is standard operating procedure. So until I see official word of JJ's departure in VARITEY or HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, I'll assume the project is still moving forward with him attached.

On the flip side, and with no offense meant to Harry (but as a friendly, joking nudge) I find it a bit ironic and funny that Harry is so quick to post this as a "false rumor" (versus other sites who are still going with it) considering that we had to find out Harry was OFF the JOHN CARTER OF MARS project well after the fact -- mind you, a project he clearly loved and raved and raved about -- NOT at his own web site and here at AICN, but through the mainstream Hollywood press when IT announced that Paramount had let the CARTER deal lapse and Disney picked it up sans any of its creative personnel, choosing to boot everyone and simply start fresh. Which as I said I find ironic and a bit funny since -- to the best of my knowledge and I apologize profusely IF I'm wrong about this -- here at AICN we never got an actual explanation regarding "what" happened behind the scenes with JOHN CARTER and WHY Paramount ultimately chose to pass, WHAT problems they had with it, WHAT meetings took place, WHO was there, WHO said what, WHO lost faith in it and at what point...etc, etc, etc. Which seems funny to me since isn't that the whole POINT of this site? To kick open those doors and reveal those very behind the scenes things? Yet here Harry had a front row seat to the whole shebang and we heard a peep. So for fun...now that the deal is dead...I'd certainly like Harry to still put together a column about the whole CARTER development process -- what happened, who said what, and spill a few beans. Well, unless the unspoken truth here is that he doesn't want to piss off Paramount by saying "Yeah, this is what Mr Dick (insert suit's name here) said at Meeting X, and that's when we pretty much knew the project was in the shitter." Personally, being a HUGE lifelong JOHN CARTER fan...as well as a lover of Hollywood lore and backstage trivia...I'd love to hear EXACTLY why Carter died at Paramount, even if it is just Harry naming names and saying "Guy X was a total dick and then Guy Y said this, so Guy Z said he wouldn't write us any more checks."

Which brings us full circle to my initial point that people more often than not DON'T initially tell the truth and DON'T admit that they've been taken off a project while they're trying to re-shift themselves onto other things, onto new jobs -- at which point they can then put on that classic face face of saying "Ohhhh, did I forget to tell you that deal I raved and raved about was dead? (shifting eyes back and forth) Yeah, yeah, that died, but it's no big deal. No, no, I didn't really care about it anymore -- in fact now that its dead my life is better for it. Yeah, who needed THAT deal? In fact, let me tell you about the BIGGER deal I'm onto now."

Trust me, statistically speaking, that is pretty much how every other conversation goes out here in Hollywood...

Oh, how I wish it were true...

Abrams' SUPERMAN script was one of the most painful things I've ever read. He should stick to his own original creations...or, you know, things that some up 'n' comer creates and he then just slaps his name on. He should stay away from classic franchises. Oh, and yeah, based on Harry's report, it sounds like Abrams himself was spreading this rumor. WTF?

WHY reboot Trek with a (new) Kirk?
by Triumph poops!
Feb 1st, 2007
07:02:28 PM
Frankly, I'd love to see a new TREK -- a great, big budgeted screen adventure complete with some worthy stars, a worthy story, top flight effects, all taking place on a new kick ass Enterprise out kicking alien butt...

...But why do this with a (new) Young Kirk? Seriously, what the fuck? I REALLY don't get this concept at all, other than Paramount being whore-meisters hoping it can milk the cow one more time. If you want to see a Young Kirk then watch the freakin' first season of TOS where Shatner WAS young. For crying out loud the whole point of the TOS is that its ABOUT Kirk's first 5-year mission. Its ABOUT Kirk being a lightning rod because its repeated over and over that he's the YOUNGEST captain EVER in Starfleet's history. So bottom line: why do I care about someone who's NOT Shatner going to the academy? Oh boy! Just what I want to see! A NON-Shat NOT kicking ass on the bridge of the Enterprise. And if Abrams IS going to put this new, young non-actor on the Enterprise, we've come fill circle to my point -- namely TOS is ABOUT showing Kirk on his first, learning voyages aboard the Enterpise.

Seriously, this project has "fucked up beyond all comprehension" stamped all over it. An as others have noted, given how much LOST and ALIAS actually lost their ways under Abrams' watch... given how unexciting I found MI:3 to be... and given how much I thought Abrams' concepts for rebooting SUPERMAN were utter crap, I really don't hold out much hope here for his "reenvisioning" the start of Kirk's career.

I agree that replacing Kirk is a bad idea. It's like replacing the guns in ET with digital walkie-talkies. Would have been better to put the story further back in time write it about either Captain Pike or Captain April. Personally, I'd prefer Captain Robert April since we know almost nothing about him.....and he WAS the first captain of the original Enterprise.

Fact is - right now - every studio in town is trying to hop in bed on this project and rightfully so. Microsoft and Bungie say that everybody is still moving forward on the project. Ultimately - at the end of the day, Fox and Universal just seriously lost out on a new franchise. Wherever this ends up, it's just escaped Fox. That's something to be greatly happy for." This is from the official STAR TREK site: 01.11.2007 Abrams: First Draft Done J.J. Abrams said this week that a draft of the new Star Trek movie is done, and that some trimming to the script will soon ensue. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Abrams was still mum on the details of the plot of the film currently referred to as "Star Trek XI." But he assured that it is designed for both established fans and newcomers to the franchise. ''On the one hand, for people who love Star Trek, the fix that they will get will be really satisfying,'' Abrams said. ''For people who've never seen it or know it vaguely, I think they will enjoy it equally, because the movie does not require you to know anything about Star Trek. I would actually prefer [that] people don't know the series, because I feel like they will come to it with an open mind.'' Abrams spoke to the magazine in New York last weekend while taking part in the New York Times Arts & Leisure Weekend. The script is being developed by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who worked with Abrams on "Mission: Impossible III," and prior to that, Alias. Besides Abrams, the project is being produced by Bryan Burk and Damon Lindelof. There is still no official word on casting or a director, though talk has been very strong that Abrams will direct himself. Abrams further told EW that he is very anxious to move forward. ''I can't wait to do this,'' he said. ''It is an absolute thrill to work on this project. We really are still like, 'How the hell are we able to do this?''' See the full article at this EW.com link. "Star Trek XI" is targeted for release in 2008, and filming is expected to start this year.

If JJ Abrams is really off, here are three options.

1. Sit down with John Milius and the ROME people. If they can inject new life into the Swords and Sandals genre, why not Trek?

2. It’ll cost a pretty penny, but the other option is to snag James Cameron before he’s too deep into AVATAR. He is the guy who wanted the Spidey franchise. Imagine what he would do with Trek.

3. If you want to go heavy on the drama and relationships, hire Clint Eastwood to direct. Let him bring his MILLION DOLLAR BABY, UNFORGIVEN thing to Trek. Another plus is Eastwood gets it done quickly. He’ll have the thing in the can one year flat.

was when Trek started, so how's he going to play a young Kirk?

The problem with this isn't the new blood, that's obviously a good thing. What sucks is that with all the areas of the Trek universe they could explore, they have to rehash the olden days. If it follows established canon, they'll make continuity errors. If they reboot with their own canon then fans will hate it. It's just a bad idea.

Rick Berman used to always say that he was making his trek films for 'non fans'. Now abrams is saying the same thing. But he elaborates that established trek fans will get a nice surprise. Berman used to say this also. I'm starting to think these guys are just puppets for the real trek destructors. Remember how Berman would always sprout off about how the new trek film will cater to the non fan. Well I am a fan and I say FUCK the non fan. Trying to suck the balls of the non fans has just aliented the established fan base of star trek and it has lead to the most lack luster films and half arsed tv series & episodes. back in the day, Star trek was an outlet for sci-fi writers. The only requirements were to utylise the established characters and universe. That doesn't happen anymore, and hasn't since the 6th season of the next generation. Let's take a look at recent sci-fi films that aren't based on comic books and don't have lightsabers. Serenity, The Island, Deja Vu, The Fountain...Children of Men is somewhat sci-fi and did somewhat well. The point is, without a built in fan base, sci-fi movies generally flop. Even with the fans, Trek 10 ate it.

And for people doubting the wisdom of the internet geeks, the script for Trek 10 was leaked months ahead of time and all the nerds said it would tank and it did.

The reason why Star Trek is dead in cinema is because of INSURRECTION and NEMESIS. had NEMESIS actually been an enjoyable movie, they would surely still be going, despite the death of Data (they may have even made a Search for Data to follow it up, since Nemesis was a lot like Wrath of Khan). The idea of Patrick Stewart actually playing his own clone did not once occur to me and it is a great idea. I would have preferred that by far. More interesting. Yet ATTACK OF THE CLONES had opened earlier that year and I'm guessing they didn't go in that direction because of the comparison. hard to believe NEMESIS made less than half the money (after adjusting for inflation) that THE FINAL FRONTIER did. but in my opinion it's a worse film than FINAL FRONTIER.

JJ did a pretty good job with M:I:III so he is the safest bet for TREK XI imo.

I could be wrong but I don't think anyone directly involved in the production has said this is definitely about Kirk and Spock. I know the Shat has been saying things along those lines but that guy has a habit of just talking out of his ass.

I know the poster has the old Command/Science shirt colors with the Enterprise logo, but that could very well be either of the captains that came before Kirk on the Enterprise. Although I think if that's the case Spock and Scotty would have to be in it. I don't know that Kirk is definitely going to be in this.

Why can't they go forward instead of backwards?

ENTERPRISE was bad enough; shitting on all the past work of other writers and destroying Star Trek continuity. Now they persist on dredging up more bad ideas to go back to the past instead of moving past Star Trek: Voyager and setting up original stories that go beyond that time line. It's not that damn hard to do it!

The best way forward for Trek would be to do a new series based on the adventures of the USS Titan, with Captain Riker, Im sure Frakes & Sirtis wouldnt mind the work. Plus guest appearances from TNG,DS9 & VOY characters could be good. The Novels of Titan is not that bad either.

I'm not gonna be a prick and dish out copious amounts of star trek hating bullshit, I just genuinely, honest to god do not understand the appeal of this show to anyone. I've made an attempt at a few movies, and at least a few episodes of every series. But sweet jesus it is so cheesy. Someone please help me.
