I'm certainly not on the King film bandwagon as they usually turn out worse for the cinematic wear but that looks pretty good. And c'mon who doesn't like Cusack? The only guy of his generation to make big budget Hollywood fare for as long as he has with his dignity still intact. I'll say this though, if it just ends with him killing himself that's weak sauce, I expect a good ending out of this one.

A good example on how a trailer SHOULD be done. It gives the basics -- what the movie is about, a sense of tone, and DOESN'T reveal too much. I know I speak for many who are sick to death of "Saw the trailer, saw the movie" syndrome.

Then again I'd probably see this based on the stars involved and since it seems like an A-level, nicely budgeted production of a King story for once. That and the fact that it'll be out in the summer when I'll be looking to get out of the house for fun summer style movies.

King's up to his old tricks again

So, King raced frantically, with snuffed up, great ideas, to write novels, that became films, that were remade, before going back, and expanding motifs from earlier works, mixing used plots together, and with good production value, is selling it to us again. Only now it's looking like every other supernatural thriller that never makes it to the cinema that are probably more original. And after seeing a recent photo of king, my god, King's gotta eat some more, he's looking limpy.

I think just about my favourite part from that movie is when the kid telepathically asks Scatman Crothers to come help him. The guy goes through all that trouble to get there. Then the second he steps foot in the hotel, he gets an axe in the gut. That was absolutely hilarious. Anyway, I have never read 1408, so I'm wondering if Samuel Jackson dies a similar death. Maybe he goes to the room to help John Cusack, and he gets an axe in the gut. Probably not, but that would be wonderfully funny. I guess some people might say that that would also be stupid. And I can see that, I suppose. I don't care. It would still amuse me.

it's getting adapted. As for Cusack, he makes everything watchable; ditto for Jackson. The story obviously reeks of King, but that’s a good thing; the great thing is that we don’t have to read it. I will attempt to watch this if for nothing more then to see what that flood was all about. Looked delightful.

In the story, if i remember correctly, he doesn't last too long and pays a price. Obviously they have to stretch this one out, which diminshes the actual terror of the room somewhat, but it still could work i guess.

For one thing, why can't a character become obsessed with something without having some cataclysmic event galvanize them into it? The main character is obsessed with the supernatural. Why? Because his young daughter apparently died, which is probably one of the most generic, lazy, and thoughtless reasons and it's been done in God knows how many movies. People often become obsessed with something for less overly dramatic reasons than this. It’s incredibly easy to understand why someone would become obsessed with the supernatural. Many people wonder what will happen after they die, and we don’t need yet another sob story to over-explain to us why this character wants to have a supernatural experience. I’m pretty obsessed with movies. Why? Because a movie somehow saved my best friend’s life? No, because I just love movies. Another thing, and this is much more important, is that this movie seems to really want to pander to people who are interested in the supernatural. At least this trailer makes me want to think so. There’s a part in the trailer where a woman says, “So you’re saying there’s no such thing as ghosts?” to which the main character responds with, “I’m saying I’ve never seen one. Nothing would make me happier than to experience a paranormal event.” So right there, this trailer is trying to sell this movie to skeptics. Except the problem is, that instead of carefully, meticulously, and believably trying to convince us that supernatural occurrences may be real, the trailer throws a bunch of loud noises and clichés at us. I hope the actual movie is better than this. I know it’s only a trailer, but I’m sick of how advertisers keep trying to sell movies using the same pathetic, cheap tricks over and over again. What the hell happened to good movie trailers? I’m not saying I think this movie will suck, I’m saying they need to make more interesting advertisements than this. But then again, I’m sure they know who they’re selling to a lot better than I do.

Reminds me of a 'Tales from the Darkside story about a salesmen who rents a room and it is haunted by a female ghost who sits in the room and plays music while her victim is laid out in the tub. I was also thinking: If this guy strictly believes he's never seen one, what makes them believe he will? Couldn't he just explain everything he sees or experiences. I think they made a mistake by not giving him another person to play off his nonbeliever stance, they pull a switcheroo on him. That would shake his belief.

Without giving too much away, this seems more of a ghost story, whereas the original tale is a "bad place" story. The room itself is the monster, not the spirits of those who haunt it.

But it's a short story. Less than a half hour to read. They have to flesh it out somehow.

Stephen King and film...
by streakerfreak1983

12:32:09 AM
Here is how I feel about Stephen King adaptions. When King has his hands on the film adaption of his work that film tends to be pretty bad or at least just boring and forgetable. When a film adaption of his work is done without him involved it tends to be pretty amazing. Look at the two Shinings. One is wonderful and one was just meh and very forgettable. Granted it was Fucking Kubrick who made the good one but that is besides the point. King just does not belong in film. He needs to leave the filmmaking to the filmmakers and stick to just writing the stories.

1st - Probably shouldn't have watched that trailer at 3 in the morning all by myself, in the dark, since i am a known puss. 2nd - In the short story, the room isn't haunted. I don't know about the movie, but in the story, the hotel manager makes it very clear that the writers skepticism has protected him from any spirits he might have come across, but that 1408 doesn't have a ghost in it. It's just plain fucked EEEEVIIIIL! And lastly, I hope they keep the writer the prick he is in the original, and don't make him too weepy.

I loved this short story and I love John Cusack. But this isn't working for me. Whoever said about how the original story is more about how the room is evil rather than being haunted is right on. The reason why the story was so good was the way King described the feelings the guy was having as the room fucked with him. Watching the trailer and hearing John Cusack talking out loud to himself just doesn't have the same effect. Cusack is awesome but he is not very good at playing vulnerable or scared. It seems he will be perfect for all the first act skepticism but once the shit hits the fan in 1408, I am not convinced he will deliver. There was no way this was gonna translate to feature length without losing its more subtle creepiness and I understand that. It's a shame though.

Season 2 of Deadwood, in episode 4 Requiem For A Gleet, there is an utterance of every AICN TB'ers new favorite word: Taint. I'm not sure of the original air-date for the episode because HBO's site doesn't include one. However, since the DVD set was released on May 23, 2006, it probably aired sometime in 2005. Unfortunately that predates our AICN Taint-Fest '07 by about two years. A two-year-old mention of taint... how'd we miss that?

I highly recommend reading the short story before seeing this movie. As a lifelong fan of S.King I can relate to a lot of the TB'rs in saying that it's about damn time a movie was based off of his stories without being some low budget cable t.v. bullshit.

This one seriously has potential of messing with some minds. Don't judge it until you've experienced the source of the material as well as the filmmakers interpretation of said source.

...seeing as how the story is only twenty or so pages. It looks like it might be a halfway decent horror movie, but aside from the title and the basic premise, it seems NOTHING like the original work. "1408" was easily the scariest thing King has written in years because he didn't fall back on cliched ghosts-- the room itself is EVIL (as other talkbackers have pointed out), and that evil manifests itself in bizarre, alien, and terrifying ways. The whole "no one's lasted more than an hour without dying" thing is ridiculous, as is the needless motivation of Cusack's dead daughter. It just seems to me that this story would be far better served as a short television program-- it would have fit in perfectly with the "Nightmares and Dreamscapes" anthology that was broadcast last year.
