Good ol' King of the Hill
by Space oddity
Jan 26th, 2007

I remember when the show first started out. Sobering to most Judge fans, who had followed the man from Beavis and Butthead, with it's stodgy animation and square cast. But as the years have passed each character has carved out a marvelous array of unique and affecting backstories, emotional depth, and healthy, and sometimes dark, eccentricities. It's worn well and has gotten wonderful with age. If William Faulkner's corpse could see an episode, surely it would re-animate in the presence of such American art.

It's 2007, people! Haven't we all figured out that Fox Films is different from Fox TV, which is distinct from the Fox Network and Fox News despite all being ultimately controlled by a secret Cabal (using Murdoch as its ass puppet)? So butchering Idiocracy had nothing to do with KOTH.

Yep.

A fan of a great show sends us a scoop and chrth poops all over him. The guy may have been off a little bit, but to call him an idiot comes across a little bitter. Way to perpetuate the angry-nerd with a goatee stereotype.

The best show on television

King of the Hill is incredibly smart without trying to tell the audience it is (Family Guy). It would be too easy for the writers of a cartoon to set the show in outlandish situations, and this show is a perfect example of how intelligent writing can make even the most ordinary of situations HILARIOUS. (All without resorting to simple "pop-culture" references.) It's the best show on TV. Period.

Look at what quality it is still putting out, and how far the Simpsons has fallen in the same 11 year time period. Mike Judge is one of the most reliable names in comedy.

All the baseball players started growing them. But I suspect that the resurgence among the stereotypical nerdy IT professional has a lot to do with an indy film character named Dante.

As for King of the Hill, its success is its ability to entertain the whole family, whereas American Dad's requirement to be offensive, crude, and politically timely will wear it thin and make syndication difficult. It would be like watching syndicated reruns of a cartoon that poked fun at President Carter. In a word: unfunny.

really?? shows that make me laugh are shows like south park, extras, scrubs, the office, entourage and pre-1997 simpsons. i ain't saying KOTH is a bad show but the kindest way i can think to describe it is to say that it's some of the gentlest humour on tv.
Fantastic news...

Without a doubt, Mike Judge gets treated like shit by FOX, whether it be in movies, or with King of the Hill, and moving the show to 8:30, and giving it another season is the vote of confidence this show deserves. KOTH has been consistently funny over its 200 episodes, and actually has well defined characters, that the humor comes from. Yes, American Dad has improved, and I know a lot of people don't "get" KOTH, or think it's funny, but in my opinion, it's very well-written, and behind the Simpsons, is it not the longest running cartoon? FOX should be promoting that fact like hell.
I love this show BUT

its best days are behind it. It has managed to maintain its peak level of quality longer than the Simpsons did (around 5 seasons or so) but its starting to suffer. The plots have become incresingly repetitive (Bobby discovers something new, Hank gets upset about it, etc.) Still, I think it is far from reaching the depths that the Simpsons reached and I'll be watching. Best timeslot in years.

I'll agree that a bunch of episodes have dealt with Bobby discovering something, Hank disapproves, only to like it in the end, but even if that formula is followed, it's still good writing. And somehow, when this show does outlandish episodes (Doggy Dancing, Lawn Gnomes, Guy Trying to Act Out the Label on a Barbecue Sauce), it still seems grounded. Best episode? Maybe the one with Jeff Goldblum and the safe. That one is wonderful. Or with Hank and the football throw/Bill and his cousins.
I still the most relevant episode is the Jesus Skaters

Instead of it being cancelled every other week so that they can show the NFL recap show of all the games that they have already been talking about for the previous 6 hours... I wish they'd take the whole damn block of cartoons to another night, far, far away from the NFL.... Some of my favorite KOTH episodes, Bobby learns how to be a harlequin, Kahn becomes a hillbilly, Dale's dad is a gay cowboy, Chuck Mangione living in MegaloMart....P.S. screw Family Dad, American Guy, and their new show Suburban Dude.

One of the reasons the series works is that the characters are allowed to change and to grow somewhat. Some of that growth has come at the expense of continuity: Peggy's Mother, Dale's Father. I used to watch because it was fun to see what a twit Peggy was. I started to like her (a bit) after she confessed how "un-romantic" Hank was. "I think I like you Miss Platter I tell you what." Favorite moments gotta be the opening of one of the Christmas shows with Bill sobbing to Christmas music and Minh on that bed of quarters. Also Minh's reaction to Joseph kissing her.

I've never been a regular watcher, but the episode where Bobby fell in love with LuAnn's hair styling head was one of the funniest episodes of any show I've ever seen. I found it closer to the Wonder Years than the Simpsons though, a little too gentle for its own good.

Fucking wonderful one. Along with the cocaine through boggle episode. And yeah, that one where Bobby is a Harlequin is fantastic. "Oh, it scalds." And I still think one of the most evil things ever done is in the finale, where Lucky wants to graduate, and goes to Peggy for help, and he she INTENTIONALLY teaches him wrong information, so he'll fail, and in doing so, not marry Luanne. That's just awful.

Glad to see King Of The Hill getting so much love. I think it's one of the funniest, smartest, shows on TV. It's funny that people I know who duck it because it is animated are missing some of the most three-dimensional characters on TV. Remember when Bill and Kahn's mother fell in love? Genius.

The best thing about Peggy
by DevilCat
Jan 28th, 2007
06:20:38 PM
The best thing about Peggy is that she is just about the only female lead, especially a housewife, in a sitcom who isn't smarter than her husband. In every other cliched program, the husband is stupid and overbearing and the wife's a saint (see, eg, everything from "the Simpsons" to "the World According to Jim").

So in tonight's episode, after Peggy explained that Caroline wasn't a woman, was Hank just not paying attention? Did he just not understand? Or was he just ignoring that Caroline was the same person as that guy? weird.
