I hate to say it, but cancel this now. The Superman mythos has involved, and Smallville (despite having had some nice moments here and there) feels tired and irrelevant. If they had just skipped forward in time and made Metropolis, maybe they could have made a good Supes show. But the ship of dreans has sailed,my friends. BUT Lana is extremely hot. Give her a show where she plays a lingerie model. Please.

Smallville & 24 are alot alike (poorly written), but...
by Shermdawg

Where they differ is, besides the death of Jonathan Kent, which supposedly was forced upon the show due to Superman Returns, Smallville doesn' wholesale slaughter its supporting cast at the drop of the hat because they can't find aything better to pull out of their ass. And right now, the writers over at 24 are so lazy they aren't even pulling anymore, they're picking the scraps of toilet paper that were left behind from previous seasons. And yes, the results are....shitty.

Now regarding Herc's comments...

1. You can't compare live action to cartoon, because obviously you don't have your limitations when it comes to animation.

2.Heroes, being a new property, and a (enjoyable) ripoff as well, they have much more feedom as to how they go about things. And they don't have Warner Bros. or DC breathing down their necks like Gough and Millar.

3. Anytime they do stick in slight nods or mentions of the DC universe, it's usually met (at least on here) with a reactin that it was "cornball".

4. Smallville doesn't take the source material seriously? What do ya want? Another Superman musical? Or a episode of Lois and Clark? This is the bst telelvised live action version of the Man of Steel and you fucking know it. And questionably the best live action Supes saga for that matter. It made Supes/Clark relatable.

Now, I'm not questioning the quality of this episode, there's a good chance it will be disappoiting. But at least it's still a fun little diversion, even if it doesn't turn out to be the best thing ever. And most certainly it doesn't fuck you over in the end.

If it was because I said 'Fuck Smallville', I hereby apologise. I enjoy this Smallville very much, particularly the scenes of car crashes and head trauma. Also, the ones where Clark pines over that awful Lana Lang.

by SpyGuy

Presumably, this change means that Wally West, Jay Garrick or Barry Allen will be the Flash featured in the movie and WB wants to keep the properties separate for licensing. And if Herc gave this episode only two stars, you know it probably rocks. He lost his cred with me after bailing on GILMORE GIRLS with episode 7.1 and Season 7 has turned out to be better than Season 6.

I love the show, have seen every single epiosde, but Smallville has maybe 4 epidoses a season that just kick ass, the rest range from laughably bad (vampire lana, evils possessed witch lana, illegal alien with a heart of gold that speaks perfect english) to mediocre (pretty much every other one). I wish they could do things differently but like Sherm said, they have WB breathing down their necks, which probably cause half of the bad creative decisions

...it's possible sorting out the various Flash/Impulse/Kid Flash properties was one of the hurdles to moving production forward. Just out of curiosity, I checked out IMDB to see what was on there about the FLASH film and found this somewhat-interesting plot summary...

"While touring the crime scene lab of his uncle, Barry Allen, teenager Wally West is doused in chemicals after a lightning bolt strikes them, which enables him to run faster than any other human being on earth. Becoming the Flash, Wally sets out to protect the people of his city from the villainous threats that arise."

So if this is legit, Wally is the Flash and Barry's making a cameo or is a supporting character. Somebody get John Wesley Shipp on the phone, stat!

Mixed with Dawson's Creek. I hate it. Instead of greenlighting so many seasons of this tripe, they should let Dini and Timm have the run of the DC Universe for a prime time animated series with adult viewers in mind. Screw calling it "Justice League" or "Superman", and just call it "Superheroes." -- If Dini can help turn out episodes of "Lost" and help make it a huge primetime hit, why not something in the DC Universe? (By the way, is it me or does Locke remind you of Batman the way he does things, treats people, and handles life on the island?)

In fact the last episode is a perfect example of everything thats wrong with the show. Axing characters just for the hell of it is pathetic. Especially when you've went to that well too many times in the past.

Would that not be awesome? Bruce Wayne pops into Metropolis and/or Smallville to check out the superhuman rumors and to keep tabs on what Lex is conspiring (since Luthor/Lexcorp is a rival of Wayne Industries). Clark and Bruce meet, etc. It would be a great way to promote *Batman - The Dark Knight* as well as score easy ratings for *Smallville*. It would be the best cross promo since the time Harrison Ford dropped in to cameo on *The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles* or when Nemoy guest-starred on *TNG*. It would also serve to drop-kick the current Superman "franchise" and pour salt into the wounds of Peters/Singer and their lame movie ideas for the property. Make it so, CW!

Considering its been like two seasons since the SciFi Channel's other darling, Emmanuelle Vaughier, was on the show for a few episodes... I take that back. To get Cerina Vincent on the show, Bigfoot would have to make an appearance in Smallville because apparently there's a clause in her contracts that she has to appear in anything related to Bigfoot. I was a fan and they took my fandom and shit all over it. I have been waiting for tonight's episode ever since I read about it on kryptonsite but I am prepared for the worst. I'm pretty sure this is the last season and it seems like gough and miller are just letting it die a slow painful death. If you can't get the rights to the characters and names then fuck it, don't do it. Why they can't get the rights may be a sign that the license holders think your tv show is shit and they don't want to risk the name. Yeah, the fans want to see those characters but they don't want to see a character "kinda like" the flash. Keep Batman off of this show because he won't be Batman. He will be Adam Wayne "Batguy" or "the Black Bat". Lana is just ridiculously unbelievable these days. KILL HER!!! Lex is the best Lex ever brought to screen and so far they haven't trashed his mythos too badly. In fact, I would say spin off Lex Luthor into his own show so we can just root for the villain. "Luthorville". Keep Lionel. Keep Chloe. Clark can guest star on his show because he doesn't deserve his own show anymore. Who's with me?

After being on and off of watching Smallville again and again, my patience was finally pushed to the end after about the middle of season five. Smallville is frustrating, a good episode once in a great while comes along and makes you think it's finally going to be something, then it's back to the same lame crap for the next four weeks. What a shame, if behind the scenes the show were ran by some other group of individuals with some talent and some drive to do some good storytelling, Smallville could easily be must-see TV.

weak, lame stories written for tweenies. Mature themes, geek laiden uber moments and smart dialog will revive the show. What we really don't need are episodes of "Growing Pains" set in the DC universe. It's had (few and brief) moments that showed the show's potential but a 5 minute span of coolness airing every 7 episodes or so isn't enough to draw and keep an audience. Maybe move away from the episodic format and more towards the Heros/24 ever continusing/evolving format.

but it does have its flaws. Like everything about Lana. And yeah, that Subterranean episode was freakin' terrible, but there's some good stuff occasionally. But you cannot compare it to Heroes in any way. They're practically different genres, let alone a different kind of universe. That's like comparing Unbreakable to Spiderman. One's a comic book adaptation, the other's a drama with 'superpowers.' And I don't think this is the last season. It's still a pretty popular show. I'm sure they'll go one more (a nice even Buffy 7). But then they really have to end it.

People make irrational decisions, are completely inconsistent, and stuff is just dragged on and on.
1)Clark, after years of lying, is STILL a terrible liar. "Hey Clark, where did you go?" "Uh, um, I uh, had to use the bathroom."
2) Why haven't you told Lana your secret. By this point, it's just laziness. It's cool for Chloe to know, it's cool for LIONEL to know, but you won't share this huge secret with the person you love the most?
3)Clark's photo was on the front page of the Daily Planet. The creators must be loving the fact that they don't have to address the secret identity once Superman shows up because they have completely fucked themselves with any possible way out of that. The glasses thing requires a bit of a stretch, but when everyone and their mother knows Clark Kent without glasses, how do you figure he's going to be able to hide?
I continue to watch the show out of habit, and I still do occasionally see glimpses of greatness. But overall it has severely fallen in quality.

...it is not fair to compare the comics and the show but right now I prefer the show. I admit I have not bought too many DC comics (lately) but I did find a set of last year's "Infinite Crisis" series. Four different Supes that I can remember and a Batman that really needs to be locked up some place. Superboy killing left and right (pulling off arms) and Wonder Woman breaking necks. I'm not really qualified to talk DC at the moment but back when I was a kid Superboy went out of his way to avoid killing insects in science class. I still remember the animated "cyber-cloned" Batman and his anguish as he realized he had killed. I guess my point is I remember when these guys were heroes and stuff like this would not have been done even in the imaginary tales they used to do. I know that the comics when I was growing up were much more scrutinized by the now defunct comics code and that it was this code that messed up the continuity somewhat at DC. I also realize that there is an effort to restore some sense of understandable history in the DC universe but I'm not liking what I see. Anyway ...I notice the bi-annual Lana and Clark thing is rearing its head again but aside from that I would rather watch the show than read the comics at this point. That Lana gonna come to a bad end the way she is going!!

Unfortunately, due to budgets, we don't get these kind of episodes often. I remember a show that involved a cowboy cop in New York that used this type of story in a Holiday episode. They never did it again but I do recall how much I enjoyed that one episode. I also think this episode illustrated that Smallville is stronger without Lana. This series has so much potential but the problem I have is its teasing nature. If next season is the last we may be in for something fun assuming some of the restrictions are lifted.
Well, surpise surprise...

I actually dug this episode. Except for the LAME-O SLOW-MO.. God, that was cheesy. My wife actually laughed out loud during that scene. I did really like Chloe as ...well, Chloe (O'brien). I know, she's supposed to be like Oracle, AKA Barbara Gordon, AKA Batgirl after being paralyzed by the Joker, for those not caught up, but I couldn't keep from making the 24 connection as she was telling them where people were in the building, etc. It's a huge stretch when our government does it on 24, and it's an even bigger one to think a reporter could pull that off. Now if they would just follow a few simple steps back to the right track, this show might pull back some viewers. Takong notes CW? Step 1: KILL LANA! We all hate her. She was never the sweet redhead who knew Clarks secret from the comics, and she is a dead weight to this show. Off with her head! 2: Let Clark fly already. The flight scene from whatever season that was is STILL the highlight of the show. 3: Let Clark and Lex at each other. Quit pussy footin' around. But, I enjoyed tonights show. The first in a long time. Bravo!

I liked it, wish it wasn't another episode where they wrapped everything up in seconds. Though i can't figure otu how Clark has never been caught running at super speed into a room and doing his stop look around then walk casually over to what he was looking for routine. It seems like Lex should have enough video for a "best of Clark" dvd by now. And it also bugs me that sunglasses now double as masks for the budding super heroes. Ah well. Typical smallville gripes but i love it nontheless. Lex's "and i want a ponytail" comments was pretty funny.

I still can't get over his "two stars" for an episode that had the rehearsal Justice League of America, Lex Luthor getting his supervillain (complete with death-trap) on, Chloe playing "Oracle" in the "Watchtower," Lois working her awesome rack, and Lana being blissfully absent. Shit, this episode wasn't even in a sweeps month, so imagine how cool the Justice Little League vs. the Legion of Level 33.1 is going to be when May rolls around.

This ep is the funnist thing I've watched in a loooooong time! I never liked Green Arrow on this show...costume and techno-glasses are pretty queer looking (not in the 'gay' way ya homophobes!) and his acting is just this side of a box of Crayola. And really, WTFs up with the crossbow? But MAN! The Flash's get-up is super queer (in the Pride marching way) and WOW is he a terrible actor! His whole 'defiant' look at Luthor before the cell was activated was terribly bad. Cyborg and Aquaman were not as bad. The kid playing Cyborg was the best actor out of the guest foursome tonight. And shouldn't Lex have more than one camera to spare in his secret lairs? He's doing something so potentially ground breaking (and kinda evil), but doesn't invest in any kind of real security aside from lead doors? The Chloe/Oracle stuff was fun, as was the last fifteen minutes or so (though, as luck would have it, Aquaman had swimming hole to get into the place). All in all though, Herc was right on the money with the two star rating. Dialogue was horrible, the 'nudge-nudge-wink-wink' fanboy inside jokes were painful, the sappy goodbye was the same ol' same ol' Lana/Clark-type stuff we've already seen so many times before. Just a lame episode. I had no high hopes for it, but man did they crawl under that bar.

The only reason Smallville has lasted this long is because Superman and his world are established characters. The show itself isn't bad, but it isn't good. The reason people bitch about it is because we want and expect a great show.

Ok, first and foremost, I dug tonight's show. It was the first time in a long time. I have to agree thought, it's time to fly, learn the rest of the powers, and let Lex and Clark go at it. I think it's also time to let Lana in on the secret, and then kill her off. As for ranking them? I;m going to take the truly obscure route for a couple. Here we go... 1.) Sarah Carter as Alicia, 2.) Pascalle Hutton as Raya & 3.) Tie, either First three seasons Lana Lnag, or Adrianne Palicki as Kaya.

Then Tom Welling can make guest appearances on JL as Supes in between missions and whatnot.

Actually I have always liked Smallville from day 1. Being a DC comic reader especially Supe's and also a fan of the Elseworld titles put out by DC. Thats basicly what section I put smallville into...just a different take on a classic story, like having Clark and Lex friends at such an early age, well friends at all for that matter. This also gives the writers more room to breath and able to take more liberties. But hey what do I know, Im just some guy from Canada...

Tried to sit back and enjoy...but this ep was so bad that it made me straighten up in sheer terror! That's spinal straightening, everything else retreated into my pelvis for protection. Let me tell you, that is an odd feeling. A weird tingling, yet not pleasurable. References mean nothing if it is just done in a nudge to fanboys/girls that are delievered in such a way as to seem like it's written by people who are not fans, but think they are being clever. The passing reference to the 'Monster of Gotham' from season one was nice...the "I Don't know what our name should be, but it should have 'Justice' in it." (paraphrasing) was just plain, bad, lazy, insulting writing. Writing that smacks of reading Talkbacks and throwing bread out to the people in the arena. And if you are NOT sure you are going to keep watching now that the JLA arch is over, that MUST mean you DON'T think the show is worthy of watching anymore. Don't it?

I hope "Justice" whatever gets their series! The only way the ep could have been better is if their were villians to fight that Lex brainwashed. But so far not totally evil for Lex. I do miss Lex and Clark's friendship but alas it was never meant to be. Also for the spinoff we need a hottie to be Wonder woman for the team and not a lame 3rd rater that D/C has, maybe Ultra girl maybe? She is stacked in the books.

Great Season

I think this is one of, if not the best, seasons of this show. I know people hate this show cause it's not "good", but it's fun. And while I understand people who still watch Lost while hating it (secretly hoping it'll turn around), this is Smallville and it is what it is. Get over it.

I like this story lines that other superheros open up, but I agree that Queen is ultra queer. And I still don't get Aquaman, he swims??? Ummm, that came in handy.

I do think Lana is bad for the show (although she's not as bad with Lex), but I still rank her hotter than Chloe or Lois. And yes, her not knowing Clark's secret is freaking ridiculous already. But if she knew, then she might get with Clark, and that wouldn't be good for the show either.

I do want to see Clark fly before the end of the show (think last few episodes, not last one). And I would also like to see Lex discover his identity. I've always been pro fuck continuity. I think it wouldn't matter much cause even a more evil Lex probably wouldn't fuck with Martha. It's hard not to like her and Lionel's influence would be a factor as well. And Lex wouldn't reveal Clark's secret to the world cause he hasn't on any other of his krypto discoveries. He'd lose his power in knowing it. Hell, if they didn't hit the reset button on the 100th episode, we would have had all of this. It would have set up the rivalry perfectly. However, I'm sure they'll just stick close to the movies, like they've been doing. Fuckin' shame.

First of all, this was an awesome episode. As someone else said, it had everything you want from a Smallville ep. Evil Lex, Justice action, Chloe in oracle mode, hot girls (and beefcake for the ladies), and NO Lana. It could only be better if Spike-iac had shown up. I was even impressed with the bit of range that Durance showed in the final scenes. Secondly, Chloe already knew Ollie was the Green Arrow - she didn't find out this episode like Herc said. Now, bring on Martian Manhunter and his carelessly dropped Oreos! (though next week looks like a ripoff of Buffy's 'Normal Again' episode, which itself was a ripoff of a DS9 episode, but better).

Don't get me wrong, I like Smallville and enjoy the superhero cameos, but when I think of Justice League I think of Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, The Flash, etc. So this episode looks more like Teen Titans, especially with Cyborg and Impulse (and technically Aqualad and Superboy and Speedy since none of the characters in the show is the adult version of Aquaman, Superman, or Green Arrow yet). I'm just nitpicking. :)

This was an actually decent episode for a change. Yes, No Lana made it very nice. I got a little goosebumpy seeing at least somewhat of a JLA seed being planted. Some of the shots of them were nicely arranged. One was pretty goofy due to bad FX (team walking away from the exploding building) It's also nice how Oliver Queen continues to harp on Clark's lack of willingness to get pro-active instead of waiting for trouble to show up. All this is, I'm sure, helps to re-inforce his evolution into Superman. No, not a great episode, but darn near.

about this show being awful.. Compared to a lot of well written TV out there, yeah it is. But you have to watch stuff like this to keep the balance. Yes, Smallville is goofy and sophmoric, but it's also fun. It appeals to the kid in me. I'm an adult and my overall preference is to watch shows with fantastic writing, Sopranos when it first came out, Galactica, 24, Lost (mostly all when they first came out) but the kid in me wants to see Smallville and I'm glad it does. Otherwise I'd end up some cynical, bitter old man. Forget that, life's too short.

Cyborg, Aqualad, Speedy, Kid Flash and Superboy. I get it. Clever. I hadn't watched Smallboy since episode three or four but I had to catch this because of the hype in TV Listings Magazine. I enjoyed it. About Erica durances breasts, google image search with filtering disabled and there they are. Nice, but there's lots better in internet pron. Corto Maltese was the lead character in a series of European graphic albums. The artist was an influence on Miller's drawing style, that's why he name checked the property in Dark Knight. At first I reacted as if "You have some amazing friends" was a Spider-man reference since I have a friend who liked that show. Then I realized that if she's said "You have some Super-Friends there" I would have had to kick in my TV.
