this is nothing more than a minor pet peeve of mine, but phyllis smith and brian baumgartner were each in ONE episode of arrested development each in tiny parts. there's no need to act like they were the stars of the show. they perfectly hold their own on the office and need no previous "cred" to be legit. hereos and earl are both also amazing

Because it really is a great show. I hope that Alec Baldwin's Golden Globe win sealed the deal for a second season. And someone put an end to Studio 60 already. Sorkin could learn a thing or two from 30 Rock.

Meh, had to type it ;) Captboulder, i'm with you in hope so - i find myself actually liking it more than i originally expected to, and the ironic part being that it was promoed like hell as the really big show to expect prior to its release, switching so fast and so early to being on the bubble. The last few episodes were really good IMO, and i believe that by a second season it may reach very high. Additionally, Heroes and Earl totally rule...

is that nobody is going to find a sketch writer having trouble with a joke that rivetting....well most people anyway...they have this dramatic music play because the joke "just isn't right goddamn it" and it is hard to get to caught up..they take it all a bit too seriously....30 rock similar premise much better show.

The cast is superb and incredibly talented. But let's face it - the show is not... funny!

Tina, please bring back Paul Simms ("Newsradio") out of retirement or wherever he is to help you with this show.

All the ingredients are there. The show begs to be funny. I want it to be so funny so badly. There's just something missing. I don't know what is. I think you skip some steps in establishing and fleshing out the characters. Sometimes the show has the feel of the fourth season of a series and that's not a good thing in this case.

I'm shocked by this turn of events.

...need to go away. So does CSI. They've run out of ways to kill people without a "ripped from the headlines" angle. How many more effed -up ways to mess with DNA evidence can these shows revisit before even the die-hard viewers switch it off?

"The Wire" is much better fare. I hope it gets as many seasons as L&O and its clones recieved.

...that for some inexplicable reason I can't quite turn away from. It's rarely funny, the characters aren't particularly developed beyond being deliberately 'quirky', and the episodes have all the weight of a feather and all the originality of a studio whore for hire, but I still watch it. I'm really not sure why. And if I never saw another episode I honestly wouldn't give a rats ass, but yet here I am, continuing to watch the damn thing.

(...as a previous poster said.) This was just the big "we're renewing our really successful shows" press release. They're holding off on everything else, and naturally that includes the two shows that are struggling most in the ratings. The spring ratings will make or break both of those series. I'd say Studio 60 has a decent shot thanks to it's upscale audience (which advertisers like) and the fact that it's ratings go up substantially when you look at Neilsen's viewed-within-a-week-of-air-ti me statistic (measures DVR and Tivo). Friday Night Lights is sketchier. I can't really see it improving in the ratings, especially since the actual high school football season is over, if that matters.
Yeah, none of this is a surprise...

They're all very successful shows. It would be foolish for them to announce whether Studio 60 is renewed or it not at this point, as they not too long ago announced it'd be getting a full season. They'll need to look at upcoming ratings. Unfortunately, I also feel it will not get a second season, which is a damn shame, because although people may have had problems with it originally, the last episodes have been wonderful. Particularly the last one, and this will hopefully continue. The problem is getting back viewers that have already decided that they hated it. It IS the number one Tivo'd show though. Here's hoping.

The Office successfully filled the hole in me that was left when Arrested Development was cancelled. Intelligent and laugh-out-loud funny. Earl is great too, this season it almost seems like it's experimenting with its format. Heroes is like crack, It's my favorite TV show on currently. SVU.....never seen an entire episode. I can't even tell all those clones apart. Oh well. Hopefully Studio 60 will get renewed, it was improving. And Scrubs, but I think they're ending the show after this year? Anybody know?

Zach Braff's contract is up this year and he's pretty much said he's leaving. Donald Faison (Turk) mentioned the possibility of doing it without him, which I wouldn't be totally opposed to, except that structurally I don't know how it would work. It probably depends on whether or not 30 Rock also comes back, because they especially won't bother trying to keep it if it doesn't have a partner for the hour.

Now that I think about it, I think the problem with 30 Rock is that there is just absolutely no conflict on the show. It's too smooth and without any edges.

When you think of shows like Newsradio and Larry Sanders, there was a tremendous amount of conflict between the characters. That seems to be a necessary ingredient for sitcoms.

The only time 30 Rock started to get its footing was with the Dennis character and they didn't keep that story going.

NBC Entertainment President Kevin Reilly....

He credited the success of several shows for the network's rebound this fall, most notably workplace satire "The Office," blue-collar comedy "My Name Is Earl," crime drama "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" and freshman serial thriller "Heroes."

Reilly said all four would be renewed for next season. And he vowed to "stick with quality" freshman programs that have struggled to find an audience, including football drama "Friday Night Lights," "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" and "30 Rock."

And while NBC has a deal with real estate tycoon Donald Trump to renew his reality series "The Apprentice" again next season, Reilly said that show's return depends on its ratings performance this year, which has so far been disappointing.

of great writing, and an amazing cast. Alec Baldwin is the funniest human (not that winning the Golden Globe for best actor in a comedy series means anything, but it's obvious), Tracy Morgan plays a crazy celeb like it's typecasting, and Fey is the perfect sitcom heroine - she serves as a logical center in the world of insanity that is network television. Like Jason Bateman in Arrested. Have you watched the show?? I've been watching the Office, Scrubs and Earl since they began, and I look forward to 30 Rock more than all of them.

No doubt 30 Rock is funny and getting better with each passing episode. Quirky characters aside, Alec Baldwin is a master of dialogue, punctuation and character. Cast is gellin' like Magellan and writing keeps getting better and better. Every episode has a "huh? moment - but most shows have 100 of them. So they're ahead of the curve. They gave shite-storm Joey a second chance - so SAVE 30 ROCK!

Focusing less on sketch comedy, and more on relationship comedy. I think this is pretty much what most people wanted to hear, how the characters and relationships will be the focus, and it was pretty evident things were headed that direction by the last episodes. I just hope that NBC actually airs the final 4 episodes once The Black Donnellys takes over, and doesn't do some lame thing like having them only available online.

both suck. There, I said it. Mean Girls was overrated, SNL only got better after Fey left. Don't get me wrong, I'd still throw it to her like nobody's business, but methinks if she looked like Garofalo, she would be seen as a poor man's Garofalo, and that's not a fate I would wish upon anyone. And Studio 60 is just boring. You've got the single most underrated comedien on there, you have to make an effort to be as uninteresting as you are. Well done, Sorkin. Maybe you should get back on the crack.

30 Rock, Office DVDs, and DOCTOR WHO!

Add me to the list of 30 Rock IS funny. I really wanted to hate it too, but I just can't. I can hate scrubs though. Scrubs is just terrible, but if it is doing okay on Comedy Central and other syndication outlets it probably will find a way back, because new episodes are practically profitable before they air. I wish it would go away and get replaced by something I like. Two straight hours of sitcoms I like on a real network is something I never expected would happen, but NBC is very close. Even though the Office isn't syndicated yet, I noticed the DVDs were selling out over Christmas and they had trouble keeping them in stock around here, it is also a popular download show, so that show is money in the bank too. CAN'T WAIT TO SEE DOCTOR WHO ON HEROS! NBC is so good now, I can almost forgive them for airing Friends.

As for Tina Fey, I loved Mean Girls, didn't think she was great at all on snl, and studio 60 took a few weeks to warm up to me, but now I look forward to it each week as much as earl and office. Office, this season has been kind of dull, I don't know, I guess maybe the whole storyline thing is kind of a drag. Still funny, but a step down from last season. Oh and Knights of Prosperity, I definitely dig it, It's got that same kind of goofiness as 30 Rock. Isn't it great to live in an age when all these non-laugh track sitcoms are popping up. Only 3 years ago Arrested Development showed up, if it were to premeire now, it'd probably have a better chance.

but it's hilarious, especially of course because of Alec Baldwin. It's a great cast in general though, and here's hoping it'll come back for a few more years at least. Oh, and Knights of Prosperity is entertaining as well, but I think it needs to gel more. I'm really glad that the big black guy is in it though, his voice is so bad-ass.
