...Carnivale and Deadwood because they are 'too expensive' and they need the money for Rome and final season (sucktastic so far) Sopranos, then they cancel Rome, because it's too expensive, and instead they choose to make this, which is going to be every bit as expensive as Rome, if not more so. What fucking numeral autistic is running HBO anyhow?

I mean, yeah, this could be cool, but you know it's going to be cancelled in one, maybe two years because, say it with me now, it's too expensive.

HBO, either work within practical budgets for your shows so that you can actually keep the damn things running if they turn out to be quality tv, or else cancel some of your shittier content to make the budget available for these more expensive, but high quality, shows. But this whole run a quality expensively produced show, build an audience, cancel, get another quality expensive show running, build an audience, cancel, repeat cycle has gotta end.

You must be joking, Lat?!

As for Song of F and I, I gave them a try but really started to hate them after reading the first couple. Limped through the third one before giving up in frustration. I actually think a TV version would work better for me, but maybe I'd still be depressed by the whole turgid mess and the constant jumping around to too many different unappealing characters. I'd read them quite happily if they just focused on the guys defending the giant wall of ice against the undead threat in the North (which seemed to me like it was always going to become the most important plot thread by the end anyway, though I could be wrong, not having finished them), but I couldn't care less for which of the various miserable twats fighting over the crown was actually going to win power.

In order for this to be made into a series the story lines will have to be cut to ribbons. There are so many (literally) dead ends and multi layered threads and characters that if you don't have a score card to follow along you'll be lost after the third episode. Martin is starting to look like Robert Jordan with his stream of consciousness writing style that really doesn't know where the hell he's going. I gave up on Jordan long ago and I'll give Martin a while longer as he can spin a good yarn, but really, this can be some pretty self indulgent stuff.

05:18:22 AM
I've been wanting either this or the Wheel of Time to show up in TV form for a long time now (there's a lot of haters, but the epic quality and immersiveness of RJ's work can't be rivaled)...but a live action adaptation seems impractical for a hundred reasons. I'm glad HBO is taking a stab at it, because it if works it might open the door for other great things...but why don't people make really adult level cartoons about this kind of stuff. It seems like no one wants to do anything in animation aimed for adults that isn't anime in style or story...and that seems like a huge untapped market to me. I dream of animated TV versions of fantasy works with HBO quality scripts and production...

Terry Goodkind's "Sword of Truth" novels. (You can read the announcement on Terry Goodkind's website). I sent a letter to Harry a few months ago about it, apparently, he likes George R.R. Martin better. The problem with both of these projects it they are HUUUGGGEEEE. Neither can survive T.V. and are too long for a movie. I love both series. Both are tremendous properties. But Sword of Truth is on it's 10th? book and Fire and Ice is on it's fourth - many storylines, albiet quite interesting, have no end in sight. I'll tune in for either of these, however, I have very little hope they can be fully realized. Take it easy all,

Both Fire and Ice and Sword of Truth have great first novels, however, the big wars, etc. don't really occur till later, so initially, budgets shouldn't be a big problem. Goodkind is a talentless hack, he blew his artistic load in his first novel and every one since then has become more pat and cliche'd. GRRM is a genius. however many people cant get past his non-traditional style , i.e. no good or evil, just shades of grey. Also I'm sick of hearing people whine about the novels going off track with the political intrigue and shenanigans. THEY ARE THE POINT OF THE NOVELS!! the giant wall of ice and the 'others' aren't the thrust of the story at all.

First of all, this is a cool idea and I hope it works out. That being said, how is this going to work? Not only story-wise, but everything else. Film in Vancouver? 100-150 million dollar budget to do it right. Over a period of 7 seasons? So HBO is willing to shell out close to, or right around a BILLION dollars to see this production through??? I want to see it succeed but this is quite a project.

I hope they don't cop out with the battles like Rome. I want it to look like money has been spent on this thing. If each LOTR film could be made for $93 million each then there's no reason it shouldn't. HBO spent $125 million on Band of Brother and $100 million on Rome, I don't see any reason why this couldn't be a huge production. The line between TV and Film is getting more and more blurred.

Sandor Clegane, but who will play his giant crazy brother? Ice of Fire IS the Best books of epic fantsy today. I´m rereading it right now from a games of thrones. Can´t wait for the fifth book. Yeah I agree, brolly, that they need to put a lot of money into it, if it´s gonna recapture the vastness of the books. I´m thinking about the ice wall in the north, all the castles, and the huge naval battle in the second book, not to speak of the 3 baby dragons and when they grow up.

It will be interesting to see how these play out on screen. As much as I would like to see this, I too think it might be a bit too ambitious and come off lame. You know, everybody compares these to Jordan and Goodkind, but honestly there is very little fantasy in these--they are definately more about interrelationships and politics of a middle age like society. Fantasy takes a back seat here, unlike in Goodkind or Jordan where magic and the like is center stage. I think they are all great in their own way, however if we must have comparison, in my opinion Goodkind is the easiest to follow becuase of the limited characters and shorter times between books. Not alot of shock value though because you know Good will triumph Evil. Jordan's world is the most original and deep and easy to get into at the beginning--then he added hundreds of characters and convuluted the story--and it is way too long between books, (no one can remember what the heck was happening) and you are dying for him to get back to the big three. Martin's novels are the best executed character-wise (and you enjoy reading about most of them), but are not great actioners, you have to really love the intrigue and plotting. Anyways, that's my opinion. Still have two more Song books to read, and then to wait for the next one, and Jordan's book and then Goodkind. Out here.

"he actually makes slow, sweet love to his teen bride" Don´t remember the exact words, but they only communicate with "yes" and "no" he asks her "no?" and she answers "yes", meaning yes he can fuck her now. And after that he rides her (Martin´s words every night until she can´t walk. George r.r. Martin is the best and the very best characters are Jon, Danni and Tyrion. To those who say there is not much fantasy I say, If you want child wizards running around with wands and on stage magic with force like powers (Robert Jordan), then don´t read a song of ice and fire.

This is really good news for fantasy/s.f. fans in general. I like Martin's series, and I'm excited to see it turned into a TV series. However, I think the most "filmable" s.f. series ever written is Donaldson's Gap series. It's got the best characters, the most intricate plot (complex, but not needlessly complex--it broadens the scope in a logical manner, then clamps shut with a tight, explosive climax), plenty of sex and violence, the best space battles you've ever seen, and an entirely unique alien threat. If you haven't read it, treat yourself to the best adult s.f. ever written. It is character-driven, not technology-driven. Start with The Real Story. Come back after book 5 and back me up! This must be filmed!

Not trying to start trouble, but most of the people who come to this site are fantasy-sci-fi-adventure geeks, me included. Now, we hear that one of the best networks out there (HBO) is making one of the best-loved fantasy series around, we start complaining about how are they going to do it? Or, hey they won't finish it? And they better have enough money to do it right? Me, on the other hand, is saying woohoo. I mean we should appreciate that a network like HBO is even doing it, and not SciFi Channel. Earthsea anyone? You gotta give HBO credit for at least looking in the direction of these types of books and films. Who else is doing it? We need more of this kind of thinking from networks. I'll be watching, even if they don't finish the series, it's still damn exciting. HBO gotta eat.

After Rome's heavy overtones of Patrick O'Brian stylings, I have some serious hope for an adult, exciting adaptation of the Song of Ice and Fire. I mention O'Brian and Rome because that is exactly where I wonder about a Martin adaptation: Who can a series like this commit to as vicarious audience members? With the novels you have a mature and consistent narrative voice, but with a film (or filmic adaptation) you almost certainly want a Claudius or an Agent Cooper to connect through. Am I being brainwashed by narrative tradition, or will this need to be very cleverly written and competently put together not to seem hopelessly distant?

These books are fucking great, and unlike others I find Martin has suffered none of the lack of focus and rambling exposition that plauged Jordans series after the The Great Hunt. These books are a pure pleasure from start to finish. Yes they are complicated but if you've half a brain they are easy to follow. Complexity is not a bad thing when the drama and motivations are real. There will be some very critical aspects of this book that HBO will have to nail, the first that comes to mind is The Imp. I have no fucking clue who HBO could get to play Tyrion Lannister, it is such a fucking great roll and I'm thinking there is no "little person" actor out there with the acting chops to pull it off...maybe they can discover some unknown talent? The age of the kids will be an issue too. I think some of them, such as Daenerys Targaryen will have to be a bit older for modern societies sensibilities. I think the Stark boys may have to be a bit older too, or they will lack the believability in battle (ala Narnia anyone?) God, that's what I love about this book though, it's written for adults. How many fantasy books (at least one set in a Tolkien like universe) have foul language, ultra violent battles and fucking? Virtually none. Jesus this is great news! This just made my fucking day!
I must be dreaming. Seriously.

I love these books so damn much it's ridiculous. First, I was obsessed with Lord of the Rings; then it was Robert Jordan's series, The Wheel of Time; and now I'm in love with Song of Ice and Fire. His novels are unlike any fantasy series I've ever read before: 1) There's sex. That almost never happens in fantasy. 2) Swearing. Interesting. 3) He does not hesitate to kill off important characters. 4) This is the best thing I love about Martin: You can never, ever predict the plot. He adds so many twists and turns that you can never anticipate what will happen or who it will happen to. This is going to be amazing. These books + Martin doing the screen writing + HBO = possibility for the best fantasy epic on film of all time. Do you all remember the dwarf who played Marlow on Nip/Tuck? He'd be perfect for Tyrion.

I would concede that Wolves of the Calla was the weakest of the series--700 pages of buildup to a banal 20-page battle. Song of Susannah was bizarre but satisfying if you buy into King's trippy self-involvement (which I did), and The Dark Tower was a superb resolution. As for JFC, I'm bitter that Deadwood was forcibly concluded against Milch's grand design and its replacement is a show about surfers of all things. I live in SoCal and 90% of the surfers I know are self-important jagoffs. I will never watch that crap.

Carnivale anyone? Deadwood? (I won't throw Rome in there, since they were told of cancellation early enough that they can at least try to give the fans some closure) Why is HBO attracted to amazing series that they cannot afford to make? These books are too huge and complex for HBO to actually allow it to become something big and finish the storyline. I'm sure it will be an amazing production that will leave us all hanging in mid-stream. I will personally guarantee it.

...but I am almost certain it will be cancelled within 2 years. I have read A game of thrones and it's pretty great. Also, whoever said that crap about Harry Potter please go away, the books do not justify a HBO TV series they are good books, but don't have enough to fill out a full series.

now that I've had a chance to digest. First off, I remember watching an interview with George Lucas when he said basically he was doing one more "movie" (IJ4), and after that he was devoting all his time to TV because that's where the future was. Guess what ? He's right. BSG, HBO, Heroes - how much more proof do we need that consumers will support good Sci-Fi in episodic formats ? The reduction in CGI and effects costs, combined with the increased budgets allowed by the fact these series can make fortunes on DVD and tie-ins just means we get better and better product. Yay for us. And LOTR proved that fantasy can be done - and done well - and will be received by a large audience. If they do this right, I predict it will be a huge critical success, as the source material is absolutely flawless. Then again, if they stick to the source material, it will also be the most violent, sexual, crass thing on tv. Hehe.

HBO needs to STICK with it. Just like they USED to do. If they are fearing big budget shows they need to really think each project through before signing it, because we all get hooked on them and nothing sucks more than having your favorite show cancelled early. *cough* Rome *cough* Deadwood!!!!

And of course the two greatest characters ever, Tyrion & Dolorous Edd Tollet! "In the end, Tywin Lannister did not, in fact, shit gold." Just kidding. The Sword of Truth series if just plain fun. The Song of Fire and Ice series is pure poetry. Some of the best writing I've ever seen. When I finished the third book I was in utter amazement at the depth of writing. However, the fourth was fairly stagnant. As for the Sword of Truth, if Sam Raimi is involved, I'm interested. And to theoneofblood - I had forgotten about the guy eating his own nuts till my wife (who just finished the first book and is starting the second) looked at me when she read that and said, "Awesome". I think I fell in love with her all over again. So, no matter what series you line up behind (Fire and Ice, Sword of Truth, Wheel of Time) it's a great time to love fantasy. Peace out.

Ron Perlman is Sandor. Even GRRM has said this. Peter Dinklage is Tyrion, he's a lil too old and not ugly enough, but if they can make Charlize Theron look ugly (sort of), they can make him Tyrion. Robb & Jon shouldn't be tough I think they start at 14, but Bran Sansa & Arya will be. Rickon will probably be played by different actors at some point. I imagine they'll try to find the hottest, youngest looking 18 yr old to play Dany who also starts at 14. But unless they're gonna cut all her numerous nude scenes the actress will have to be 18. Oh yeah, two of my other fave scenes: Viseys' crown & Red Viper v. the Mountain!

HBO hardly runs a show past 3 seasons and they pick a fantasy series that supposedly going to be 7 books long. There's no way it will last. Also, for those claiming it's better that LOTR, give us a break. Anyone that makes that claim about an unfinished fantasy story cannot be taken seriously. Any fantasy series over 4 books long is difficult to translate into TV or Movies. The Wheel of Time is another example of a good series that is now way too long to be useful. Monorail77 is right. Guy Gavriel Kay has written plenty of books that would be much better. A Song For Arbonne remains one of my all time favorites.

I completely agree that the book simply isn't worth adapting anymore. It's major ideas have become so assimilated into pop culture (and our everyday lives) that the uneducated would simply call it derivative and avoid it. Whatever happened to Michael Mann's adaptation of "Count Zero"? That would be spectacular. "Idoru" is supposedly going to be turned into an anime, and I could definitely see that one as a film.
money

I think deadwood being canceled due to money is a convenient excuse. I'm sure it was indeed expensive but look at the network. Last time I looked HBO had 26+ million subscribers, paying $15 a month. You do the math. HBO is loaded with money, it's kinda a ripoff when you think about how few new movies they put on and how few original series they produce. Where is the money going? If they do make this into a series and it is successful, HBO will invest somewhere around 700-800 million dollars if they do all 7 seasons. In other words, it ill be by far the most expensive television series ever produced, and it would have to be on the popularity level of the Sopranos to survive all 7 seasons. I hope it will, but this is a steep mountain.

Tragically a program like this will, I think, either not get made or be cut off at the knees come season 2 or 3.

We've seen again and again that the Masses don't like challenging and original content. If this weren't true, The Wire would clearly be the highest rated show in history. The truth is when Joe/Jill Taxpayer sits down in front of the idiot box after a hard day at the office he/she isn't looking for stimulating, rich material. He/she just wants some easy-to-digest crap that doesn't offend his/her sensibilities and lets him/her switch off his/her brain.

Whilst I would love for this to succeed, it can't survive on Fan Ballast alone, as Serenity so clearly demonstrated.

George RR Martin doesn't write "hack fantasy". He is the closest thing to Tolkien there has ever been, but is better, IMHO. Tolkien had black and white characters who were either good or bad. Martin writes grey characters. They are good, they are bad depending on your point of view. He is also a realist. In most fantasy, you know who is going to live through all of the books, no matter how bad things get. Not true with Martin. He kills people. He kills kids. He kills women. He kills main characters who you think are going to be there forever. He takes characters who have been painted as awful monsters for several books, and then lets you look through their eyes and you see why they did what they did. No excuses for what they did, but the motivation behind their actions. Martin's self confessed favorite character is a dwarf (a midget, not the bearded type from Tolkien), who hates his father (a mutual hate), hates his sister, worships his older brother, likes whores, is emotionally crippled by an incident as a young boy, and is a smart, cunning calculator and planner.

I appreciate the insight, thanks.

Keep in mind that Tolkien dealt with supreme archetypes in his story. Considering how mythic LOTR was in its actual telling, it may not feel as realized when compared to the fiction that has so obviously been influenced by it in the years since.

Season 3 of Deadwood was not exactly on par with the first two seasons AND Milch appeared to be losing interest anyway. As far as Carnivale is concerned, I got the sense there was a whole lot more going on behind the scenes. Knauf appeared to abandon ship a little too quickly for my taste and there were plagarism rumors that I never heard a follow up on.

...because it's fucking cheap by HBO standards, in fact it's the cheapest continuing hourlong drama they produce. The fact that it's one of the best and most critically acclaimed shows that HBO has produced doesn't hurt matters either, but it's the relative cheapness of the show that has saved it's ass from it's almost constantly looming cancellation more than anything else.

Like I said, I'm not a hater, this is a cool fucking project, and I believe that HBO can do it justice, but if HBO can't afford to follow through once it's up and running and built an audience and they have us all hooked, because they've by that time been distracted by their next big expensive idea and need money for that, leading to this getting cancelled with the same old "too expensive" excuse that killed off Deadwood, Rome and Carnivale, and likely before it's able to come to some sort of resolution, then that's really gonna fucking suck. And that seems to be an increasing trend at HBO, so that's what really worries me. It's not HBO's lack of quality, it's their increasing lack of support for that quality. It's investing a lot of money in something, making a quality project, but then yanking the carpet too soon and without chance of resolution or a satisfying ending for viewers.

As has been said, at least with Rome hopefully we should get some closure by season's end, with Carnivale that didn't happen, and with Deadwood it's damn unlikely that we'll ever see that promised miniseries wrapup story. I just don't want to see that happen again on these new cool shows that HBO is bringing our way, that's all.

Great question. As far as ive heard its in pre-production and is supposed to be filmed sometime this year. One wonders if Alan Ball is really committed to doing another 5 (?) year series that probably wont allow him to do other projects. Season 4 of SFU seemed like Ball lost interest with the series, although he recovered for season 5. But with True Blood, John From Cincinatti, the Preacher show - and now A Song of Fire And Ice - HBO really seems to be interested in paranormal shows, or at least shows with paranormal attributes. Im interested in seeing how well they work out.
Please, this will go the way of Deadwood and Rome.

That is, it will go the way of those series if it ever gets made, which I doubt. There's no way in hell anyone can do justice to these books -- they're about 20 times more complicated and dense than "Rome" and Albrecht gave up on it after two seasons. If they gut each book they might be able to do it, but then why would anyone watch? Plus, knowing HBO, they'll probably cast Peter Krause as Jaime Lannister and Michael C. Hall as Jon Snow, which would blow chunks. The only way this would work is if they got the BBC involved, but again, they considered "Rome" to be so expensive and unwieldy the suits at HBO will never do that again.

I got to agree. Their is absolutely nothing wrong with the material, its the network. While HBO is the only one who could pull it off, there history doesn't look good. Like I said before, if they truly wanted to make it a series and do it right, HBO would basically be signing a 700-800 million dollar check over the next 7 years. Thats an insane amount of money that will never be made back unless it becomes wildly popular. The only hope I have was the George Lucas statement (Brought up earlier) that TV is where all the big future 'blockbuster' special effect crazy stories are going to be made. Perhaps HBO is trying to revolutionize this genre with a mega-budget fantasy series. Thats the only way I can think that a company owned by Time-Warner would be willing to write a check that big. I hope they are that ambitious.

Pretty cool stuff. Vog, when people say the characters are shades of grey is because they're all flawed. Obviously the Starks are the basic "good guys" and the Lannisters are the basic "bad guys," but its not that simple. Ned, Robb & Jon are all honorable, but all three them broke their vows. Jaime's changed alot and he's one of my favorite POVs to read. Cersei's a total bitch, but when you understand everything she's gone through, I can almost empathize with her. Joffrey's just a spoiled bully kid, not pure evil, and neither is Tywin, he just wants power and to protect his family.
