zekmoe doesn't know WHAT he's talking about...but what else is new? The cast should be filled out with Timberlake as a modern day Ferris Bueller (obviously a cyborg) and Billy Bob Thorton reviving his character from 'Bad Santa' as Iron Man's sidekick. Last but not least, of course, we have Scott Baio as the ORIGINAL Human Torch. Can you say "Academy Award"? Anyone?

How will she shoot her scenes from the UK? Or does she hide out in Paris since she disowned the US? Or since the US disowned her? Knowing she's in it has absolutely ruined this movie for me.

There was a rumor of this movie Over 2 years ago that is was going to star The Mighty Midget Tom Cruise and the bad guy was going to be his father because (The Mandarin was too politically Incorrect). I liked the Mandarin from the 90's cartoon especially that 2nd season where he was question to get the 10 rings back. So I am hyped to see the Mandarin if I would say they should get Watanabe but he did batman or that guy from Mortal Kombat. But he was in Mortal Kombat. a little off topic but those two could make a awesome vageta if they ever did a live action DBZ.

...of most of the major Marvel movies having HORRIBLY mis-cast female roles. Kirsten Dunst, Jennifer Garner, Jennifer Connelly, the upcoming Bryce Howard fiasco... (The only movies to get it right have been the X-Men flicks. Flame away, if you must, but you know it's true...)

Look, I'm not saying these women aren't talented actresses. But they were completely wrong for the roles they portrayed.

But back to Gwyneth... if you pull the old 60's Iron Man books, you'll see that Pepper actually had a pretty big role in the stories, as the secretary and token pining female. So it stands to reason that she might have more screen time than you'd think in the feature film. But... it shouldn't be Gwyneth. Find someone relatively unknown and spunky... with REAL red hair and freckles, for God's sake.

The costume is not good - and Garner WAS miscast
by snomusic
Jan 17th, 2007
01:42:26 AM
Elektra is supposed to be a mysterious, dark skinned, raven haired beauty whose looks could make you faint before she even started kicking yer butt. Not a green eyed, pasty skinned, mousy haired, slightly better than average looks, girl next door. And the "costume" sucked in Daredevil and the apology costume in the Elektra movie was even weaker. Roselyn Sanchez is the closest thing to a perfect Elektra we could have had. Come on comic geeks - vote on it - you know she'd have been perfect.
X-men DIDN'T get the casting right BTW - Halle Berry was totally wrong - I can't think of any particular tall amazonish chicks at the moment but even though she's the same size I think Vivica Fox would have been better. Famke Janssen was kinda close but made up right (and wearing a bra) Kirsten Dunst would have been better. A no accent Rogue? Sugar, please. Oh yeah, they screwed up her whole backstory anyway so who cares I guess. A bony frail guy playing Magneto? No offense to Ian but even James Brolin would have been a better choice. Katie Holmes would make a better Kitty Pryde than a Rachel Dawes. There are others but I think the 2 successful castings were of course Patrick Stewart and Alan Cumming - guess when they found out he was gay and had a devilish tail it was bound to offend someone - although I'm not sure if it was bestiality folks (pro AND con) or gay rights folks. Main rant complete - stifling the rest.
If they are going with the Tony Stark becomes a drunk story then they should go with the original costume as well. But then I always preferred the old school one instead of the one I saw in that art - reminds me too much of Ultron. And of course if they go witth the alcoholic storyline, that means Downey would absolutely have to get the hairstyle he had in Natural Born Killers.

Elektra was indeed miscast. Personally I would prefer to see Maggie Q play the part, but oh well. Its not even that Jennifer Garner wasn't hot, cause she was... she just didn't LOOK the part, and the scripts of the two movies didn't have Elektra ACTING LIKE Elektra. As for Storm, if X-Men would have been made 10 years earlier, I think Angela Basset would have been perfect. In modern times, maybe Gina Torres, though I'm not sure how she would look with white hair. Halle Berry's accent changed with each X-Men movie, and by the 3rd movie it was gone completely. Horrible actress, seriously. Famke did pretty good in the role, but was it me, or did she look a lot older in X-Men 3 compared to X-Men 1? Perhaps they should have casted younger. Not really sure who would have played it better though, to be honest. I saw no problem with Kitty Pryde in X-Men 3 other than lack of serious character development. That is to blame on the script, not the actress. I think Robert Downey Jr. will be great in the role of Tony Stark, and I am VERY grateful that it is not Tom Cruise! Nice to see Terrence Howard taking a chance on a comic book movie... and if this becomes a franchise, he could easily get a much bigger role, as his character took over the Iron Man suit at one point.

Maggie Q seems a possibility - no thoughts on Roselyn Sanchez, tho? The woman is smokin' hot and exudes mystery - I look at Maggie and expect her to be quiet but more in a shrinking violet kind way. I could see Gina Torres possibly as Storm and possibly Angela Basset back in the day, but we're definately heading in the wrong direction height-wise. If we did that I'd have to nominate Julia Channel, then Tabitha Cash for Elektra and then.....oh jeez, I keep this up and I'll be downloading porn again. Nevermind.

Any update on whether or not Favreau will be reprising this role for Iron Man? He mentioned it once before, but it didn't sound definite. These Marvel movies really need to connect more, even if only a little! The closest thing so far is the mention of Dr. Strange in Spider-Man 2, the "cameo" of Wolverine in Fantastic Four (even though it was a deleteds scene), and thats pretty much it.

Though her role in M:I:3 was pretty small, I thought Maggie Q was decent, and would for sure make a better Elektra than Jennifer Garner. Roselyn Sanchez is hot, and looks a LOT like ELektra, but I'm not really into her acting, so I don't know. I think Gina Torres would definitely ACT more like Storm than Halle Berry could anyday. Other than that, I can't think of too many other actresses that might fit the role "just right". As for downloading porn, isn't that the sole purpose of the internet nowadays?

Jay from Jay and Silent Bob, has a dual identity, and played in Freddy vs Jason as the guy who gets cut in half after smoking weed... Michael Myers and Jason have been the same person all along... Vin Diesel played under a stage name on the recent season of The Sopranos, and got beat up by Tony... and finally, contrary to popular belief, the zombies in Dawn of the Dead '04 are actually the same crazy guys from 28 Days Later, but they wanted it kept secret, as part of their contract.

who is absolutely incapable of surprising you. In other words, boring, as others have said. She is a low-energy, low-wattage woman. She'd be good at playing an opium addict. And she doesn't seem "classy", as many claim. Actually, she seems utterly Banana Republic--i.e., American yuppie. And her looks are below average, by movie star standards. And her body is a droopy-shouldered, scrawny, saggy mess. I'm not *really* being a hater--I just can't stand how the public overrates some stars for no discernible reason. Kate Winslet and Rachel Weisz--now those are actresses with energy and sparkle and class. (By the way, Jennifer Connelly is beautiful but acts every character as a sad-sack, weepy wimp woman. I don't think she has any acting range at all.)

that failed for the following. It sounded hollow. The story was hard to follow. There was no backstory to any of the characters so the audience was floundering trying to work who the hell all of these people were. The actors were so bland that they fitted into the background like wall paper. Anyone in the uk who saw the the very witty Star Stories episode on Angeline Jolie well realise that she real is a vampire. Those who disagree, should ask themselves whatelse do you call someone who carries a vile of blood around their neck. The Star Stories ep about Catherine Zeta was one of funniest things I have seen in along and the way they wrote in Mick Hucknall as a jumped up money grabbing mancunian was the best not forgetting the glorious way they lampooned Micheal Douglas as sex addict. And then there was the one with Sadie frost......

This is the smartest choice these Iron Man types have made so far. With all due respect to brobdingnag, I love that Downey does not look like a typical hero. At this point in our sociological development, we are all pretty familiar with the unstoppable muscular action guy, so why not try something a little different? Besides, this is a guy who fights crime in a mechanical suit that can fly and shoot lasers. Probably, it even has built-in roller skates, a fifty megapixel camera, and can store up to 10,000 mp3s. You don't need a Frazetta physique for that. I say, make this a more flawed and vulnerable character when not in the iron outfit. It's more interesting that way.

Keaton was one of the better Batmen out there, second only to Bale IMHO. But back to Spidey for a sec, my only gripe with that series is that it never really let go of the angst long enough for it to be all-out fun. I still love the movies, but it gets a little too heavy at times. I suggested in another TB that they flash-forward about ten years and recast Peter/Spidey with Ed Norton. Older Spidey (with established mojo) would be a lot of fun to watch.

Paltrow is on record as not taking roles that AT ALL require changes in her kids schedules. That was the case with Sky Captain where she filmed very briefly on a sound stage (and that was with just the one kid). With 2 kids in tow now, I'd expect that Pepper is a medium small sized role at best but she must make an impression in the small time she has.

First that troll Dunst as MJ, now this? I mean, I'm one of the 5 people who loved Sky Captain, but I readily admit that the worst thing about it was Gwyneth Paltrow. Action is not her element. Whoever said Isla Fisher was dead on, that'd probably work. It would also skew younger in an otherwise older cast. Jewel Staite would maybe work, too. Sometimes I think Hollywood doesn't want these films to work, so they shoot themselves in the foot on purpose casting-wise...

YAAAAAWN. Let me guess: Villain captures Pepper Potts at the climax of the film... threatens to kill her... Iron Man saves the day... Paltrow takes Downey's helmet off and then they kiss. You just KNOW that having Paltrow cast as such a minor character pretty much guarantees that she'll be in the movie WAY MORE than she should. And yes, she IS a stuck-up pretentious snob. I can just hear her making "script suggestions" to Favreau. Puke.

Her heyday was during the mid 1990s with films like Seven, Emma, Shakespeare in Love, The Talented Mr. Ripley. But since 2000, she has made one dud after another and her looks have faded. I don't think she will add much to this movie. She probably took it because it's a small role, a high-profile film, a quick payday, and a chance for her kids to see her in something.

I threw Norton out there mostly because I think he's a great actor that could pull off the nerdy guy/ass-kicking hero dichotomy. Take one part priest from KEEPING THE FAITH and one part bare-knuckle beast from FIGHT CLUB and there you have one awesome combination. But either way, I would be really happy if after Spidey 3, they cleaned house and started with an older version of these characters, cast with all new actors. Raimi can stay if he wants because the man has done right by us fans. Just lighten up on the soap opera elements. And cast Jenna Jameson as the odler Gwen Stacy.

And Laura Prepon would've been a perfect Mary Jane. As for DOwney in the IM armor, I think that's a great move. I probably would've liked Howard even better in that role, but he will make a fine Rhodes. Paltrow's never done a thing for me. She's just one of those cases of celebrity I don't get. I agree with Yack on Keaton, though. He was the second best movie Batman and may have been the best Bruce Wayne. Now sing the Iron Man theme song with me: Iron Man, Iron Man...does whatever an Iron can. Presses shirts, presses pants...gee those people look like ants. Look out! Here comes the Iron Man! Can he drink, listen bud...his alcohol is two percent blood. Watch him drink from a flask...see the puke come out his mask. Look out! There goes the Iron Man!

People are saying this is a small role for Ms Paltrow, but is it really? I admit, I'm not overly familiar with the comics, so I don't know too much about the character. Is she a love interest for Iron Man? If so, couldn't Paltrow have been chosen precisely because she's not a young thing anymore. Downey is forty-odd, after all. I like Yackbacker's idea with Spidey - flashing forward about 10 years would allow them to fix the whole Kirsten Dunst casting mistake and get someone who a) can act and b) is actually hot. Because MJ is not supposed to be some kind of girl-next-door, she's supposed to be the kind of girl a guy like Peter Parker shouldn't be able to get, but he does anyway. You'd think Hollywood wouldn't have a problem erring on the side of implausibility when the story requires it, but I guess Dunst is proof. The whole storyline's screwed up anyway at this point, only a reboot (or, to a lesser extent, a flash-forward) can fix it.

Why is it you jerks cast white bread Jennifer Garner as the Greek assassin Elektra? Then you cast the saucy, vaguely ethnic looking Jessica Alba in the role of ultimate white bread honky superheroine Sue Storm? Is there some shortage of blonde actresses that fit the look? Then you cast the blondest actress on earth, Kate Bosworth, to play the very brunette Lois Lane? What's up with that? It's like casting agents can't be bothered to do their job these days. The point of adapting an existing work for the screen is to create an experience that is entertaining as a film while remaining as true as possible to its source material. This should be tatooed on the forehead of every film executive, director, everybody right down to the prop guys. Because otherwise, you end up with Howard the Duck.

As YackBacker said, Hollywood doesn't really care about the fans or the material; they only PRETEND like they do. The reality is that many of these casting choices have nothing to do with who is right for the role and everything to do with money, marketability, and personal relationships. Do you think agents and managers care about who SHOULD be playing Pepper Potts? Of course not. They are hustling to get their clients work so they can make money. So while we are all stewing about Paltrow's casting, her agents, managers, and lawyers are congratulating themselves on another 10% commission they have earned.

I think it's an odd mix of actors in these three roles. I think Downey and Howard will be good together, even though their film paths have covered differing territory. I am not a fan of Paltrow's work, I think the last movie I saw her in was Shallow Hal to be honest. And that was 5 years ago! I tried watching Proof and turned it off three times. She can go either way- she was decent in Talented Mr. Ripley. I think Favreau will make it work, but its unfortunate that he chose someone so ill-suited for the genre. Some say Downey and Howard are ill-suited for the genre as well, but I see potential in their performances that I don't readily see with Paltrow.
Thanks Yack

I know what you mean about her.

Hal is the last time I really watched her in anything. However, she was strong in Ripley and Se7en. From what I've read, Favs has a way of really getting some good performances out of his actors.

As far as Downey and Howard, I really see them in some great scenes together. People will say that they are ill-suited, but I bet the same was said of Brando in Superman.

I will hold out hope until I see some footage. Thanks for your thoughts on this.

Funny stuff, kid. Back to Turd, good point about her performance in Seven too. That movie was overall awesome. I'll give the movie the benefit of the doubt regardless of Paltrow's casting. I think with Stan Winston doing the actual suit and with ILM doing the FX, this movie could be HUGE. Fergus and Ostby, who contributed to the CHILDREN OF MEN script, have had a hand in this movie's screenplay. That alone is enough to get me interested.
Well, Turd...

I suppose Gwyneth is a decent actor. Although, I don't think she has done anything worthwhile in several years. Pepper Potts is probably her attempt to get back in the game. (Not to mention her appearance on "Inside the Actors' Studio" was a snoozefest.)

Unfortunately for me, I'll never be able to watch the movie, "Sliding Doors" ever again. The half of the movie when she has the shorter blonde hair - she's a dead ringer for a woman who crushed me a few years ago. So, I'm probably a little biased against that good-for-nuthin', rock star marrying, New York/Hollywood/London socialite. ;^)

I will admit, she does nothing for me on the personal level, but I think she has some good scenes left in her.

Hopefully Favs can prove that.

The "Inside the Actor's Studio" was pretty boring. I know I wouldn't want to share conversation with her at the dinner table.

I can't watch "Alien" for the same reason. That thing reminds me too much of an ex. Extra protruding mouth and everything! When she'd be down there and... you know, doing stuff. OH THE PAIN!!!!

I thought getting Downey for Tony Stark was an interesting idea -- after all there's no question the guy can act and he is personable onscreen. I mean you can sort of see him in the role. But Paltrow is just a flat out HORRIBLE choice. She's vastly overrated as an actress -- frankly her acting is as flat as her chest -- and let's be honest, in terms of genre work she sucked the literal life out of every frame she was in in SKY CAPTAIN. Seriously, you watch that movie and she's just atrocious. And to pick HER of all people to be the "red-headed hot sexy secretary" to playboy Stark is truly one seriously BAD decision on Favreau's part, which makes me begin to think we'll have yet again another lesser Marvel movie on our hands. Wow, great -- that's just what the world was clamoring for!

no somber in spidey comics? check out the kraven storyline, some of the venom storyline, the gwen stacy stuff even.. hell the godawful pustule that was the clone saga was somber personified. i'm sure there are many others. problem with comics (and the departure argument vis a vis movies) is they have too many storylines, so that within 50 years of publishing, nearly every type of storyline will be represented and someone can always come out and say, 'yes but the original sue storm WAS a minx so that justifies jessica alba etc' - i don't agree with a lot of these choices and i don't like the spider-man movies very much (treacly stuff especially) but it's difficult to level the 'departure from the comics' argument at them when the comics themselves have had such varied stories and themes. just, like, saying.

The whole point of Pepper, at least as originally written, was that she was the pretty, but not overtly sexy, girl next door type, who crushed on Tony, while Tony spent all his time carrying on with big tittied actresses and models...under she finally moved on to another guy and Tony realized that he was a shallow jerk. Paltrow is pretty, but too thin, and has that kind of plain, sort of cute, look. It works.

by lettersoftransit

They must think it's a huge mistake, because they keep on writing it as "should of". Well, for the one or two who care, "should've" is not a mistake. It's the way it's supposed (not "suppose" btw) to be written. It's a contraction for "should have." And by the way, when people "too boring" instead of "to boring," that's not a mistake either.

I had to read (well, skim) all the way down to DevilCat's remarks wondering if anyone here had any idea who Pepper Potts was? She was the plain secretary who had a crush on him that he was completely oblivious about. Playing the girl who gets ignored... Paltrow should take that casting as the backhanded insult it is. Rbt. Downey, Jr. owes his career to connections and the fact that his father was a telented film director. Junior is 42 and as worn out looking as any lifelong drug abuser, so it makes sense they need an equally old and worn out actress to make him look good. It's like when Rene Russo was judged "too old" to play opposite Val Kilmer in that "what if Batman was really stickbundle" movie. casting is important. Not getting Alicia witt for Mary Jane Watson ruined the Spider-Man franchise and not getting Cher to play Catwoman spoiled that Batman sequel. And I'm sorry to see that Downey is now cast as both Xandar Cruz and Iron Man. what happened to the idea of having him play Tony Stark and getting an athletic body builder type to put on the armor for the action sequences? Conceptually, an Iron armor suit is so NOT skin tight spandex where it is the one hero where it makes sense that the suit would be bigger and more muscular than the actor wearing it (as in the TV Flash with the foam rubber muscle suit.) Speaking of Downey who got fired off of Ally McBeal because he couldn't stay clean, which is to say speaking of Ally McBeal alumni, that hot blonde from Sirens who someone couldn't recall the name of was Portia De Rossi, more recently of Arrested Development and currently Mrs. Ellen Degeneres. Beautiful woman, much prefereablle to Gwyneth Paltrow in virtually any context, but most certainly not a Pepper Potts. Who will be called Salt Sellars in the Cracked parody.
