The licensing issues probably are that they DON'T HAVE THEM. I wouldn't be suprised if this mock-up has been released soley for purposes of drumming up hype and interest so that they can pressure the rights holders into giving them a shot. Then again, if that's the case, good luck to them. I'm not bowled over by the footage of gameplay, but if it's a strategy that pays off then I hope they can make the most of it.
Sony is the Hold-Up

Apparently, Sony (as a parent company) owns the rights to the Ghostbuster IP. So, you can see why Sony probably would not want to license out a property for a competing console. I would assume the reason it's a "Hold Up" and not a "Cancellation," is that Sony is probably trying to convince ZootFly to release it on the PS3.

by Tin Snoman

I hear tales that he's not down with licensing his likeness. The Wikipedia says he "refused the rights to use his facial likeness to collectible manufacturer NECA, which was forced to cancel plans of producing a highly anticipated Ghostbusters action figure line in 2004. A highly detailed, customized figure of Murray featuring spot-on likeness was even mailed to him in attempt to express his passionate fanbase and change his mind, but the plea was virtually ignored." Maybe they can make Venkman look like Lorenzo Music? I'm sure Ackroyd would be down with it, since he is compelled to sustain himself.

But that's his niche I suppose. He needs to wake up and realise that he's never had, or will ever have, a finer moment than Ghostbusters. It helped put him where he is today ($240 million domestic in 1984! That's like $400 million or something now). And besides, he'd make a few quid out of it, and make his old pal Dan (who, lest we forget, is directly responsible for the film in the first place) a happy bunny, as well as me.

Actually having my character look like Bill Murray is not a deal breaker. So Bill Murray is a sourpuss now, big surprise. Fuck him.

If Sony is holding out till they port it to the PS3, well they should have thought of that when they made a system that no one wants to develop for.

As for the game, the most impressive thing is the interactive environment, meaning you can blow the shit out of the walls and objects around you

GB is my favorite movie of all time, and while i'm excited for this game i have to say that i'd rather have one that's more faithful to the film versions of the gb. Either way this is the type of game that would make me by whatever system it was for. On a side note my friends and I made a GB fan film entitled Ghostbusters: On Call that mixes Reno 911 with GB. The movie licence and the games licence
by TheAllSeeingEye
Jan 16th, 2007

Are two seperate things. Sony may own the movie rights but the IP belongs to Ackroyd and Ramis; or so i've read. The last Ghostbusters game was on Nintendo DS and was published by Dreamcatcher games. At anyrate Zootfly are devs for PS3 and XBOX 360 so there's no reason for it not to appear on both systems.
Not a hoax, but a fake. High quality fake, but fake...
by DocBosch
Jan 16th, 2007
01:35:18 PM
As said above, they don't seem to have the rights to actually make this game. It's not a hoax, as it was made as a working game, but it's not official. If anything, this is a step up from a fan made video game. If this works anyway like unsolicited screenplays for established franchises, Sony can't even consider or even look at this game. If they do (1) and they reject it, but later choose to make a Ghostbusters game or even sequel, and it happens to have any similarity to this game, the game developers can sue them, and (2) it would encourage others to start creating games based on non-licenced properties on spec, increasing the chance of lawsuits. Plus, the rights issues with Ghostbusters, as I understand them, goes beyond just securing licencing from Sony and likeness from the actors. Each actors actually own the rights to his characters. That's the main reason a GB3 was never made. Ernie Hudson is the only one willing to give rights to his character, which is why his was the only one featured in cartoons and Universal Studios attractions after a while.

Fun Facts about Ernie Hudson: The Black Ghostbuster
by DocBosch
Jan 16th, 2007
01:50:42 PM
I met Ernie Hudson last year at the film festival I work at. I learned a number of fascinating facts regarding him. Did you know: -The Hudson River was named after Ernie Hudson. -Ernie Hudson wrote a Ghostbusters 3 script that was so amazing, it collapsed into itself and vanished from existence. -Everybody knows that George Washington Carver invented hundreds of uses for the peanut, but Ernie Hudson came up with thousands of uses for corn, including popcorn and a corn based cure for cancer that was suppressed by the large pharmaceutical companies.

Last I saw Harold Ramis he was huge. And Bill Murray looks like he's 200 years old....despite his still be awesome. Ramis would need to go on a crash diet and Murray some botox and hair extensions for Gb3 to work at all. Moranis and Weaver seem good to go, though.
I would hope that
by myspoonistoobig
Jan 16th, 2007

Aykroyd and Ramis seemed to have enough passion for the project that perhaps they could see this as a fine opportunity to get that Ghostbusters in Hell idea they had for the third movie on paper, pleasing fans, avoiding Sony and making something for the fans. Also they can look thin. Perhaps they can convince Murray if they sign on and they grant him the same story stipulations he wanted on GBIII (as I understand it, he wanted to die and become a ghost).

AND I ALREADY POINTED OUT THE DIE HARD CONNECTION!

Don't agree with Will Smith and Ben Stiller though. They are kind of TOO silly. Murray and Aykroyd delivered their lines with straight faces. Smith and Stiller use goofy-ass faces. Will Smith with a proton pack doing that goofy "WHHHOA!!" face of his would seem more like a SNL skit than GB.

I, too, would LOVE to see another GB. C'mon Big Willy, y'know ya wanna! I swear I'll take at least 3 friends (even if I have to buy their tix, but I doubt I'd have to). GB2 wasn't as great as 1, but I'm sure if Bill attached his name, with his conditions satisfied, GB3 would be green-lighted faster than you could say, "Where do these stairs go?" and have someone reply, "These stairs go up".

The game looks good to me. The guy who said it was better on the C64 is on glue. I had it, played it, and thought it was OK at best. This looks like great fun. Even if it is just tracking down ghosts all day and destroying the city in the process.

Just typing that is getting me going.

...AND...

Whoever said that Moranis should get back together with Doug Thomas and do the Strange Brew 2 movie that was PROMISED to us YEARS ago, is TOTALLY RIGHT. They would get my $$$, fo'sho'. Everybody I knew was talking like a hoser and singing, "Do loo koo koo, koo koo, koo koooo!!!" We had the Great White North Christmas Album, too.

Vaughn could probably takeover for Murray pretty well
by finky089
Jan 16th, 2007
05:14:35 PM
but, I'm just not the biggest fan of his. Something always irritates me about his characters. His characters just aren't endearing the same way many of Murray's characters have been.

Never theless, if getting an approximate "Venkmen" replacement is called for, Vaughn sounds like a good choice.

But this franchise should probably just be totally rebooted. It's been too long for a sequel with the same characters to work. Even in a reboot, it will always be compared to the original.

I think they should just clean-up the celluloid and re-release the original with heavy fanfare and marketing and be done with it.

It'd be alot cheaper, it'd deliver what everyone already loves, and there's alot of people who like it who probably never had a chance to see it in the theater. Plus, the greedy studios could do another DVD release in a ploy to make yet more money.

As a franchise, you could license other actors and use their likeness for a new group of Ghostbusters! How about getting the Chris Farley estate to allow his image? i'd much rather see the original cast come back. i don't care how fat and gray they are. i think the ghostbusters coming out of two decades of peaceful retirement would be a good premise.

anyway, if there had to be a new cast... i like the vince vaughn idea, but no stiller, ferrell, or owens (even though i'm a fan of all those guys). jon favreau. artie lange. paul giamatti. don cheadle. zach galifianakis. jeremy piven. there are enough guys out there that could handle a true ramis/aykroyd ghostbusters script without having to resort to caricatures of the original 'busters, or "frat pack" slapstick.

Where the hell is that guy now? I know that he bumped into Ackroyd about a year after GB came out and said something along the lines of, "thanks man, now I can't walk into a bar without some asshole wanting to pick a fight with me". Walter Peck, one of the greatest movie dick(less?)heads of all time. I salute you sir, wherever you may be.

Murray and co. come out of retirement after 20 years for one last fight against the forces of evil. At first the new ghosts are throwing the 'Busters around. The tables start to turn when Stay Puft accidentally melts his hand while punching Harold Ramis on the hip. It becomes clear that the Ghostbusters are indeed formidable opponents. Slimer yells from the crowd "everyone thought this was a joke including me. Now nobody's laughing." Cue "Going the Distance".

In case some of you are still wondering if the YouTube vids are fake or not, ZootFly states for the record that they are indeed legit. And as to why they posted them on a very popular user-based site, programmer Tibor Klajnscek gives this explanation: "We were primarily interested in seeing the response from the fans and hoping to get some valuable feedback. I must say that we're very happy with the overwhelmingly positive response to the prototype footage!" Speaking of which, one of those vids included a chase scene with a revamped Ecto-2. In case you are not familiar with it, Ecto-2 is actually a European Chrysler 300 station wagon that replaced the 1959 Cadillac ambulance. Klajnscek mentioned that while they haven't secured any licensing agreements with Chrysler yet, they are really pushing for this vehicle. He explained: "When we were designing the Ecto-2 we decided to go with the Chrysler as it is a really cool car. Also, the car is European so we hoped Americans would find it more exotic."

I feel like now is as close as were ever going to get for anything to happen regarding Ghostbusters. I look at Indiana Jones and that was dead and now look. Movie starts shooting this year. If anything is going to happen, movie, game, whatever....now is as close as were ever going to get.
