is actually a pretty good movie. I think the reason it's her best film is b/c it's her most personal and if you know anything about her relationship with her ex-husband Charles Shyer, you realize that the Diane Keaton is basically a fictionalized version of Myers. Plus Keaton is absolutely great in it so even though the final third is totally predictable, I find that I like that movie quite a bit (and a helluva a lot more than WHAT WOMEN WANT or anything else she's done).

movies like these latest two by Soderberg, which fall under many a radar, end up becoming hot shit in 5, 10+ years. I wonder if there are any embedded / nuanced aspects to them that are difficult to see in the here and now. Or he's just a jackass that makes poop movies.

to Iraq. Just use SOME MAGIC and BAM problem solved. I love this magical realism shit, I think it will soon lapse over into politics. I mean I'd be more entertained if politicians started to wave wands around instead of doing that figuratively with their rhetoric. We're living in an increasingly media-drenched culture where image matters more than policy, so why can't they just look like gandalf or spiderman? I also don't think anyone would notice the difference, and would probably feel happier.

Seriously Mori can we get a revised version with some different colors, or perhaps line breaks for when the movies change in the write-up? What about an underline or perhaps italics? Just askin' is all...

If you have it. You don't need it. If you need it. You don't have it. If you have it. You need more of it. If you have more of it. You don't need less of it. You need it. To get it, and you certainly need it to get more of it. But if you don't already have any of it to begin with. You can't get any of it to get started. Which means you really have no idea how to get it in the first place. Do you? You can share it, sure. You can even stock pile it if you'd like. But you can't fake it. Wanting it. Needing it. Wishing for it. The point is. If you've never had any of it, ever. People just seem to know.

I will definitely be checking out the 'Good Shepard' as I planned to anyway but you motivated me further... 'All the King's Men' had its moments but unfortunately I thought any interesting parts of Willie Stark were in the first 15 minutes of the film..once the Sopranos dude fell into pig shit, it was all downhill from there..I personally like Penn as an actor but this movie was indeed boring and too drawn out..
All the Kings Men film was one of 2006's biggest flops

Variety named the All the Kings Men film as one of 2006's 10 biggest flops (it cost $US 55 mill and made only $US 7 mill), plus Sony themselves even thought it sucked (they had it on the shelf for over a year). The film looks like it's going direct to DVD in most countries outside of North America, instead of getting a cinema release.

That's why Broderick Crawford was much better than a noticeably "thicker" Sean Penn; he was a legitimate big man already. That and a great actor. The first version was an Oscar winner and holds up better several decades after it was made than the remake does after one viewing. Moriarty, you sold me, I'll go see Good Shepherd tomorrow and put Wordplay in my Netflix queue tonight. Thanks for the extensive write-up.
The Good Shepherd / All the king's men...

1) The good Shepherd: What a movie, like Morty said it's not for everyone, but the feel to this movie is incredible.

You actually feel like you're looking at what happened all those years ago when the CIA was being crafted. Amazing, a spy movie without big gun fights or exploding buildings (Not that I don't enjoy those, but a reality based movie from time to time doesn't hurt).

This was one of my favorites for this year, and hope that De Niro gets his Director Statuette this year.

The realism of the whole situations that the characters go to from scene to scene is great. They got the guy to help them out, and it works.

2) All the king's men : This is the kind of movie that happens when good actors are way too emotional about their political views. It becomes a personal vendetta and it sinks.

Penn has proven himself in the last 10 to 15 years as one of the great actors in Hollywood, but I think he went for this one just because he could try to do something with it to make a point.

Unfortunately, the point gets lost when you fall asleep on it.

I figure that he'll do something better next time around. But has Morty sort of said, it's better off accumulating dust in your local video store shelves. Don't even waste a 2 for 1 deal. Hell, instead of seeing this, get yourself to bed early because wasting 2 hours of my life on it was painful. It should've stayed buried in the Classic archives instead of another unwanted remake.

Free for all!

FreeFinger!

Even A.I. underperformed. Seriously, this guy is box-office poison and I just don't understand why he gets so much high-profile work at the fee he charges when nobody goes to see anything he's in. Or he just makes shit chioces to star in films that nobody wants to see.

say what you like about AI, I didn't think it was all that good, but it made like $235 mil worldwide on a budget of $90. that's not exactly underperforming.

and Closer was a pretty big hit, for a $50 mil budget, wasn't it? made well over a $100 mil worldwide. of course, all the King's men was a huge flop. I guess it all evens out.
Law's Road To Perdition also grossed $100 mil

ummm....ummm...this doesn't really sound German. It actually too me a three hours break and a repeated viewing to understand that Reaser is speaking german at the beginning of this trailer. It sounded Spanish. Who cares, though. This trailer is so wonderful and sweet. Thanks for recommending and explaining the film and doing this elegant write up. I can't wait for the lists...

Miami Vice vs. Watching Paint Dry

Yes, I know Miami Vice wasn't mentioned in this article, but I need to vent right now. So, humor me. Anyway, I just watched it and was shocked by just how boring it was. Now I wasn't anticipating a Bad Boys II action extravaganza, but it might've been nice if something happened. It wasn't like there was no action because they were concentrating on character development, 'cuz there wasn't much of that either. There were just a lot of, uh, I don't know, showers. I just think it's weird that the best part in the whole movie was Gina capping some skinhead dude in the medula oblongota. Gina? Really? I'm not sure she even had any lines. Well, other than when she was telling said skinhead that she was gonna shoot him in the medula oblongota. Crockett and Tubbs just stood around, threatened to mess people up and then, took showers. What a piece of crap.

of movies that did what they were supposed to, but not much more. Rocky Balboa, The Queen, Casino Royale, Apocalypto, Dreamgirls, Babel, Borat, Strangers with Candy, Curse of the Golden Flower, Brick, Superman Returns, Little Miss Sunshine...all very solid genre flicks that didn't particularly elevate the film medium. There were a handful of films that did more than I expected, but for the most part, I'm growingly grateful for going to a theatre and getting exactly what I paid to see. As for The Good Shepherd, I didn't see it as a grand operatic statement of CIA history on the scale of The Godfather, but an overly long, poorly sequenced film that could have better utilized the charm Matt Damon is capable of exhibiting on film. I tend to agree with Monster2B on the factual errors in the film being a bit glaring and vague in their interpretation. And while I understand Damon was playing a CIA type, I found his agelessness distracting especially when his contemporaries seemed to grow older with the film.
I meant 2006.

Acting great, direction great, but Matt's aging looks shitty. His son looks like he's the same age he is. Explanations and backstories are nil. The movie is okay, nothing more.
