How is it that multiple other sites have posted that SciFi will announce the renewal any minute?

Just think about it, BSG gets better ratings than Stargate and SciFi owns BSG outright, this show is profitable for them.

It has everything one can hope for in a television show, drama, action, excellent characterisation, a fantastic plot and a fantastic ensemble of actors. I honestly hope that this rumour isn't true, surely this show is still pulling in a profit for those involved!
Why would anyone watch a great show like this?

WHen there's Howie Mandell and Idol? People who would have made up the difference in this shows ratings have left TV Land for the Internet, DVD and Games. THere's no reason to be loyal to a show because if it falters even slightly in ratings it will get cancelled, and if it does well, the whole season will be available on DVD soon enough. There's a glut of entertainment choices, so the reason to hurry to watch when broadcast. I know of at least 5 people who never even heard of Firefly, yet I lent them my DVD set to and loved it.

There will be bloodshed. (In best Maximus Desmus Meridius voice) "At my command, unleash hell." Note to Sci-Fi, BSG is the only show on your network I watch with any regularity. Doctor Who has kinda sucked in season 2. and the Stargates are mildly entertaining at best. Don't fuck this up.

A Rumor Probably, but Don't Forget "Farscape."
by bobbyjoe
Jan 12th, 2007
08:08:48 PM
Well, I wouldn't put much faith in that rumor, but the lingering burn of how Sci-Fi lied about "Farscape" having another full season (and then later pretending by "season" they just meant the second half of the previous season) and then cancelling it still makes me nervous. The treatment of "Farscape"'s one of the reasons why I wasn't too comfortable about EVER watching a continuity-based show on Sci-Fi ever again, but Battlestar Galactica's quality was so high, I started watching though it will probably turn out once again to be against my better judgment, as far as the Sci-Fi executives go. They pretend to be fan oriented, but their dedication to the fans is actually really shallow. "Farscape" fans learned that Sci-Fi can be duplicitous snakes. Some people have forgiven them since they coughed up the measly four-hour "Farscape" mini-series, but "Farscape" never really got a chance to fully wrap everything up, and the thought of "Battlestar Galactica" trying to wrap everything up in two to four hours just makes my head hurt. This rumor is unsubstantiated and likely untrue, but don't doubt that Sci-Fi will cancel "Galactica" in a heartbeat if they want, even if they've just told the fans that everything's swell and the show's safe a day before they announce the cancellation.
This would be a bummer...

when they decided not to keep their winning formula of both the stargate series and then galactica, as all 3 shows fed off of each other's fanbase to get even better ratings, with only one of the franchise's running, the ratings have slipped, and sci-fi now moving galactica to sundays lined up against... 24. Wow, real geniuses working there at sci-fi. If they really gave a shit they wouldnt have already re-newed SG-1 for another season, and instead of waiitng until BSG's second half of season 3 has aired, put things back te way they were, with all 3 on a friday together. But it'll never happen, because it's the smart move. You heard it here first people, sci-fi is the new Fox.

As Herc said, this is an "untested" source. We probably won't have more than a month (at most) to wait until we hear about a fourth season. While I have not been happy with the direction the show has been going, I'd hate to see it end without a solid conclusion. But, in the meantime, lets just keep our eyes open and see what happens.
Galactica Ratings
by Gorrister
Jan 12th, 2007
09:46:29 PM
I saw someone ask about ratings. The average for Season Three, so far has been around 1.5 (down from around 2.0 last season and 2.5 for first season). BSG is still one of SciFi's highest rated shows. While this sounds like good news, here comes the bad: BSG is an 'original' SciFi series. Meaning SciFi is paying the production costs. Now, while a show like Doctor Who rates lower than BSG, the profit margin is higher for Doctor Who because SciFi just pays for the rights to air the show, rather than paying production costs. If SciFi has determined that BSG is not bringing in the advertising revenue to pay the bills, they may well pull the plug.

by warp11
Jan 12th, 2007
09:57:33 PM
If they know all the fans will react this way, maybe they intentionaly start rumors these days to try to raise the rating a little. When in fact they are developing a prequel series called Caprica, and have plans in the works for a dvd movie.

in other words, maybe they are just using us fans these days to drum up attention and thus ratings.

they can't be ignorant of what happened with Farscape. They know just a slight misquote of cancelling a popular show will make us all go wild.

don't play into their game.

The show stopped being interesting after the first season. The constant corruption of all the characters and lack of story, yes I said lack of story, made the show go down hill quick for me. I loved the mini-series and the first season, but then they just went with sex and making everyone fucked up. The only likable character in the entire show is Adama, but he can't carry the whole thing. The show lost the survival aspect and the space drama and just became a sex scandal ridden melodrama with the ocassional space scene. I'm sad it didn't turn out better, I was hoping to have something after the cancel of Firefly. I hope Sci-Fi actually makes a series out of The Lost Room...it was really entertaining.

I wasn't really sold on the idea of a prequel series anyways, but I wonder what this news might mean, if true, for "Caprica?" Maybe the real story is "Battlestar Galactica" will end and be replaced by "Galactica '08." The ragtag fleet finds Earth and the story continues. Flying motorcycles that transform into alien jets, and an episode where the crew settle their disputes through interpretative dance, intelaced with flashbacks of what happened to Starbuck.

This just came through...it's at least more substantiated than the rumor from somebody who works with somebody whose sister supposedly works on Galactica. ;) "Straight from Lana Kim, the Sci-Fi Channel publicist, told Brian directly that no, that is not the case. BSG has not been cancelled and there’s has been no talk of cancellation or the show not being renewed for another season. So unless they haven’t let the publicist and talent know, the feel and word at the TCA’s is that BSG is safe with only a timeslot change for the rest of the current season." http://iesb.net/index.php?opti on=com_d4j_ezine&task=read&pag e=1&category=11&article=1605&I temid=38

I don't trust anything SciFI says after STARGATE
by Triumph poops!
Jan 13th, 2007
01:24:02 AM
I never trust anything that comes in the form of a SciFi Channel press release, and I certainly never trust what comes out of the mouth of a SciFi Channel exec -- so given this rumor or its source, I've learned the only thing you CAN do when it comes to the SciFi Channel is just grin and bear it and just wait and see how something plays out (which means keep some pepto bismol close at hand to be safe). After all, these are the same buffoons who made SUCH a big public deal about "how thrilled" they were with STARGATE..."how happy" they were with its ratings...and and "how proud" they were to be associated with a show reaching "a milestone event in broadcasting" of a 300th episode...

...at which point SciFi pulled the plug literally the day after the episode aired. SciFi Channel execs notoriously have their heads up their asses, which is why you can place a Vegas bet now that they WILL do something utterly boneheaded to screw up BSG. It's simply the nature of the brain-dead beast!

by Gorrister

The way I see it, the worst case scenario, at the moment, it that there have been talks about the possibility of not renewing BSG. Yes, the show has been slipping in the ratings, but BSG is about to debut at a new day and time. Officially canceling the show without seeing how the show performs in this timeslot would be outright idiotic. How would they look, professionally, if they said "BSG is not getting a fourth season" and then the ratings for the new time take a massive leap upwards? Hell, NBC didn't cancel "Joey" until after they gave it a shot at a second season. I think they would at least give BSG a chance to improve things with the second half of the current season.

I don't think the schedule was the problem

If you look at the ratings for the finale of Season Two and the premire of Season Three, you'll see that pretty much the entire finale audience returned for the premire. So the schedule didn't cause viewers to drop off. Personally, I think it's the writing that is losing audience members. Not only are they continuing the Soap Opera style of the second season, but they started off the third season with a social commentary of the Iraq war....with the "good guys" in the role that mirrors the Iraq terrorists and the 'villians' in the role that mirrors the US military. Not only would his offend a certain percentage of their audience but others are so sick of hearing about terrorism and insurgencies in the news and don't want to see it popping up in 'escapist' shows like BSG. People watch TV to be entertained, not lectured.

...the current fans will follow it there, and Sunday is a better night in general, since the non-geeks who have dates and shit like that on Friday nights will be home on Sundays to watch it, too. Setting it up with the premiere of Dresden IS a vote of confidence. Leaving it paired up with Atlantis [cough lame cough] on a now dead friday night would be a vote of no confidence. None of us will stop watching it because they moved it, and many new viewers may now discover it.

BSG has had deliberate parallels with the 'war on terror' since the very beginning. To suggest that people have tuned out during season three because of themes that have been there all along seems slightly odd. Sure it's escapist in the sense of being sci-fi, but not in the sense of it being 'light'. I like BSG precisely because it is dark and has shades of grey - one big reason why it wouldn't play to a mass audience on a network like NBC (whatever happened to that particular rumour?).

nevermind about trusting the word of some untested source, but why then are we trusting the opposite word just because it comes from a publicist? If you're to believe public relations people then GameTap was supposed to have made Myst Online: Uru Live end its beta testing last week - didn't happen. But anyway, I said it before and I'll say it again: Tricia Helfer looks great! Now, if there's a Cylon God, it's Christina Hendricks turn. Pleeeze... oh pretty pleeeze?

Regardless of whether this rumor is true or untrue, I'll keep watching (or TiVoing) every episode as it rolls out. Guess I'm a big fan of the show. If it gets cancelled or doesn't get renewed, I'll be disappointed but I won't go ballistic.

I'd like to see BSG's overall agenda play itself out, though, and witness the conclusion of Galactica's journey. Hopefully I'll get the chance.

Riiiiiiight! BSG lost their audience because the right-wingers left over the Iraq allegories. Even though the brain-dead war supporters now only make up 35% of the US population. BTW Gorri, didn't you make a big public announcement that you stopped watching the show after the President's miracle cancer cure? "The fleet sails on without me!" LOL!
The Iraq Allegory WAS A Ratings Killer

If you show the humans as terrorists , who the Hell is anyone supposed to root for? It's a depressing show when you show 99 percent of the human race as either collaborators or terrorists. While it certainly is food for thought, it isn't escapism. Star Trek had the occasional episode like this, but BSG kept it going for half a season. While I personally enjoy this type of sci-fi, I can easily see why it turned off others. I think it was a ballsy choice, and am glad it was made, but there's a reason most shows play it safe. Thank God BSG is usually not one of them.
Why keep [staff function deleted] if the rumor was BS??

I think it will be a sad day when Battlestar Galactica is cancelled. I was frankly amazed when I heard that the ratings for the current season were falling. It didn't take long to figure out the reason. The show has always been very ambitious with its narrative choices, pushing the boundaries of what I've thought possible in a TV show, allowing it to outstrip many movies in its complexity and scope. TV seems to be about making 'brave' shows these days. 24 stays alive because of the tension it creates through the constant jeopardy of its characters. Battlestar season 1 and, to some extent 2, rocketed along brilliantly because of this. And, really, season 3 is no different - it's just more complicated. It was the danger from the Cylons that kept that threat alive. Now the threat is divided into certain sets of individuals on both sides. This is brave in a different way. It's asking people to invest more and more in the mythos and less and less in the characters who we simply can't trust in the same way anymore. Fans are fans and have no problem with that, and people with a appreciation for good storytelling will love the show still, but the average audience feels lost and abandoned by a show they thought they understood. Maybe TV shows are aproximating the movies with their quality but cinema audiences are not the same as TV audiences. Cinema audiences want to be shown something really powerful or challenging or intense and they'll enjoy it no matter what because they're paying (or have paid for the DVD). They also feel obliged to sit through it. TV gives no such obligations, and perhaps that's the reason there's no such thing as 'Arthouse' television. It's the audience - not the show. That's my two cents. Maybe a movie would better serve the franchise?

If that's true, than that explains why I hate "the average audience". Those people have NO right to complain about remakes or reality TV, when they turn their backs on things which are slightly challenging and take risks.

Even though only US ratings matter, I doubt UK "general audiences" would be too different so I can't point the finger culturally.

Listening to some of you guys complain about the show and some of the alleged allegories about Iraq is an excellent example why there's so much stupid shit on TV. If you listen to the podcast Moore says this isn't about Iraq, it's about people doing anything to get free of am occupying force. This show is a drama, and drama needs conflict and good drama really questions the morals and values that we've adopted. It's supposed to make you think. And I bet you people who are complaining would still be complaining if BSG was just another "planet of the week" show (next week on BSG! Starbuck crash lands on a planet where everyone gambles and she plays a high stakes game of poker to buy her freedom from the town brothel). And some of you are kids just trying to start flame wars, but for the adults... why are you still watching and posting about it if you don't like it?? Go away, read talk back about another show, go read a book, go for a walk, play some sports, talk to your kids, play with your wife or girlfriend. Come on!
Twin Peaks... hmmm

Yeah, kinda forgot about that... I guess, where I was going is that there seems to be no widley acknowledged catagory called 'arthouse tv' because the audience just arn't there. TV broadcasting companies wouldn't go for something that would have an inherently smaller viewing audience - unless it was a specialised station. That's not to says that there havent been or arn't some shows with an artistic temperament, TP and BSG included.

First off, the New Caprica story had nothing to do with Iraq as it was modelled after the resistance in Viche France in WWII. This has been widely published in multiple articles and spoken about in podcasts by Ron Moore himself.

Second, they were only on New Caprica for the first four episodes of the season, not half the fucking season like you said in your ignorant ass post.

Know I wasn't entirely alone, but damn I'm good. I was just wrong saying BSG might have another year left. Yes, the heavy handed political panderings often pointed out not only detracted from the story, but were moronic in their logic and moral equivalency. But IF BSG is a goner, it's not because of that and some of the more discerning viewers it turned off. A big part is the cost. I think this is ultimately too expensive for a specialty cable network that has limited patronage. (Going from a 3 to a 2 share is a huge drop off too.) Even though it did work for a while. The final straw though will be that the plot has nowhere to go. There's just the continued flight of a battered mankind with little hope in sight. Dragging in another human Cysimp to betray the fleet is just more of the same. The set-up was always a downer and just too negative and confining. They're gonna find Earth so the Cylons can slaughter them too? The biggest mistake was taking the Cylons' side. Besides already being depressing, the self-loathing of this show was often out of control. I think it could find renewed interest if it was optimistically retooled with Earth found. But don't see much purpose or appeal otherwise with the story OR series. All good things must end. If now, at least it was before BSG got really, really bad. And leaving the door still open for a big screen treatment if somebody else wants to front the cash.

SciFi needs content for the recently announced SciFi HD Channel. BSG is shot with HD cams. Use your brains, peoples. And with that, hopefully SciFi will coerce/kick down some funds for the BBC to finally join the year 1998 in terms of shooting *Doctor Who* with HD cams instead of DigiBeta.

Why did they have to airbrush her pics so much? She's a beautiful woman. They could have cut down on the airbrushing and the heavy eye makeup. Were they deliberately trying to reference Blade Runner with the makeup? Sheesh. And what's with Helfer's modesty?

They've been playing reruns of BSG on the UHD channel on Comcast. How great is it to watch the episodes in HD instead of the usual crappy Sci-Fi feed. I rewatched the entire initial "miniseries" this weekend (having never seen the first 40 minutes of it) and it was wonderful. Pretty good hints at the story to come, too. In any event, if Sci-Fi is launching an HD channel, they'd do well to keep this show around - it looks glorious.
