in a 24 hour period I've managed to create a vile new catchphrase (using TAINT, possibly with "dorothy" but not required) AND got a direct response from someone at AICN. damn these past six years coming to this site, I'm finally vindicated!

seriously scott, thanks a million. one of my old high school buddies and I were talking about the new robotech movie last night and looking up vintage robotech stuff on ebay. ahh the lives of pathetic married men are glamorous aren't they?

thanks also for the link, and I have no idea how I missed the column last week! curse my post new year's eve hangover haze!

I can get into the movies but the tv stuff can be annoying. Still want to see a live action Akira, give that bitch a billion dollar budget.

The animated AD&D movie: Dragonlance: Dragons of Autumn Twilight. Kiefer Sutherland is on board and we have the triumphant(??) return of Lucy Lawless. Ah well somethings I guess are just to geeky even for the geeks.
RIP Kishida, Takamoto and Kleinow.

Re: Best Manga Spinoff Character is by far Char Aznable. "L" would be too annoying as a main character. Re: Cameron Battle Angel. As long as that's all done in MoCap'ed CGI stuff I'm all for it. If not then I say forget it. There isn't an actress I can think of who can convincingly play Alita. Re: Miyazaki. The man's a genius. He's got so much talent though that I almost wish that he stretched himself and tried something different. Maybe a series of 10 minute anime shorts. Or just try to take the industry in a new direction. Though I'm not going to complain if/when he comes out with his new work. Re: Smart Shopper. If you like Hitchcock, you should try a series called "Monster" (though I'm not sure if it's available outside of Japan). Some might consider it slow going and long (it's a story told over 70 episodes), but if you like thrillers then I highly recommend that series. It's absolutely nothing like the "conventional" anime stuff that gets aired in the US. It's more like a high quality serialized drama and probably has the best directing I've ever seen in an anime series. Re: Satoshi Kon. He doesn't stand a chance. Not when there's CGI movies raking in millions at the box office. It's too bad.

the title had me expecting some new cowboy bebop (however unlikely). i just finished samurai champloo and i've gotta say i miss the scope of the former. i wonder what shinhiro watanabe will tackle next.

Their DVDs are grossly overpriced, underdeveloped, and loaded with shit-tastic advertisements for their other overpriced, underdeveloped, advertisement-loaded DVDs. If I wanted to pay to be abused, I'd find a dominatrix.

That first episode was badass and had probably the best sword action I've seen since the almighty Ninja Scroll. Yes, it's that good. Word.

Seriously, what the hell? You've gotta know that's going to make people think Cowboy Bebop. Way to ruin everybody's lives.

Yikes! I was referring to the genre. I love Cowboy Bebop as much as anyone else, but my odds for a new work are very low. In all likelihood, a new work would have to be driven by American funding or at least made with the express goal of being marketed to an American audience. Given the shelf life of anime popularity you'd think that if it could be worked out, it would have happened by now. Ideas were floated for more Cowboy Bebop, but nothing came to fruition. Factor in that most of the Cowboy Bebop staff are getting plenty of work and I'd be very surprised to see it happen. It's not unheard to see a dormant / semi-dormant franchise revived (see new Evangelion movies, new Tenchi Muyo OVA's, Ah! My Goddess TV, or Patlabor WXIII), but that's the exception to the rule. If they do really revive Cowboy Bebop, I promise that the article of the title will indicate that explicitly.
I think Satoshi Kon standa a chance...

Let's see, no good Pixar film out... I don't think Cars is that well received... all the other CG animal/fairy tale movies thus far were sub par or crap, plus I feel the academy is itching to give Kon the academy after turning down his two other revered films the last time around, which were Tokyo Godfathers and the highly praised Millenium Actress. Can't wait to check out Paprika!

I'm certain it'd most likely be an OVA film. Probably fit into some episodes somewhere... or what most fans are hankering for... to see an in-the-old-days syndicate story of Spike, Vicious and Julia...

...with Coyote Ragtime is that there is the sense that all these characters have prior history yet none of this is really explored or played with. We are only given hints of these prior entanglements. For example: the leader of the 12 sisters is identified as a former Coyote. The sisters themselves remind me of the Sol Bianca girls (which is ok by me) but when the most interesting one of them spends most of the series as a head in a cage ...well. Marciano obviously has history with Mister (I want to like him but...) but that never seems to get explored. One thing I do like is the ending of the episodes with the puppet like character representations but it is almost like an in joke about the series. I enjoy anime with SF elements and I would like to like this one but I just can't. It's too bad. It is a very pretty series to look at.
