there are a lot of ways a $200 million movie could miss. james cameron makes mediocre movies, and people in the 80's and 90's loved mediocre! in TV, movies, music, everything. but now, it seems that only horrible shit (reality TV, night at the museum) or really good shit (PotC, Heroes) are popular. middle of the road stuff has a huge danger of flopping like a drunk sorority chick in 6 inch heels.

Cameron's last motion picture was Titanic, fucking eleven years ago. That's reason enough to worry. This is a MASSIVE follow-up, it could be too big for him to handle after all this time. Also, he seems determined to rip up the fucking book and rewrite it HIS way with the help of WETA Digital, which YES is an exciting idea but it's also pretty daunting. I have a feeling Avatar is going to go one of two ways ONLY, either the BIGGEST MESS in the history of cinema or the BIGGEST and BEST effects sci-fi movie ever made. Anything in between just ain't happening. Cameron won't LET it happen.

I was writing mostly tongue in cheek, but I do think cameron is mediocre. the films that he's made successfully (not profit-wise, but quality-wise) are all medicore films. they may be fun, but they're mediocre, plain and simple. titanic was atrociously written, but it was a big spectacle, and appealed to teenagers and women and my girlfriend in high school (who was both).

and I do think that reality TV is the worst thing to happen to entertainment. I just wish there were more things out there that would challenge the viewer, rather than just cater to the lowest common denominator.

The Plot: "Sam Worthington, a young Australian actor, has been named to play the lead, as a paralyzed former marine who undergoes an experiment to exist as an avatar, another version of himself. The avatar is not paralyzed, but is an alien — 10 feet tall and blue. Zoe Saldana, another relative unknown, has been chosen as the love interest." What? Are you kidding me. I hope Cameron knows what he's doing, because all we need now is a Unicorn and a race of intelligent Cat-People aliens to make this wack-job story complete.

Yeah, baby! This is fucking great news. James Cameron is back behind the camera making an R-rated, big-budget science fiction movie from an orginal screenplay that he wrote. The last couple of times this happened, he produced "The Terminator" and "Aliens," two of the most groundbreaking films ever. I realize people are a bit soured by "Titanic", as am I, to be truthful, but Cameron's science fiction genius will finally be hitting screens again. Fucking a, that's awesome.

I'm encouraged by the fact WETA's onboard, since I read an article about how Cameron let certain WETA workers mess around with his next-gen motion capture stuff. Apparently, after only a week, they were jaw-droppingly impressed by the tools Cameron had developed.

I've never really seen Sam Worthington or Zoe Saldana, so I don't know much about them. But that's cool. Casting up-and-coming actors instead of known quantities adds fuel to the anticipation surrounding "Avatar". Then again, "The Chronicles of Riddick" starred a couple of up-and-comers and that film sucked big time. But I trust Cameron far more than David Twohy.

Can't wait to hear more about this project.

I remember reading the script to this from Drew's back when I was like 14... I didn't actually finish it though, so the ending will still be a surprise. I wonder why Cameron didn't get a larger budget, $200 million isn't all that impressive, what with Superman and Pirates and LOTR's getting bigger ones. Damnit, I want some really ludicrus amounts of money being thrown onto movie screens, imagine a $500 million dollar epic.

I have no doubt James Cameron is ahead of the curve, from a technologic standpoint. In the article with the NYT, Cameron says, "This will launch an entire new way of seeing and exhibiting movies," With the budget and complexity we're talking about here (multi month shoots, multi hundred million budgets) will anybody else be able to follow in these filmmaking footsteps? Or will the risks simply be too great, dooming Avatar to a one-off. Thanks Harry.

Hey Harry. Thanks for the opportunity to give you ideas. I -- and pretty much everyone on your site -- appreaciates it. I almost can't believe you trust us that much. Ahem... the question:

In the NY times article, I read that the story pits an alien army against a human army on a distant planet. It sounds larger scale than anything I've seen from Cameron in the past, which is great. Does the story have an epic feel and scale, or does it focus on a smaller, emotional scale, or both?

1) Cameron almost always has some kind of relationship at the core of his films (be it husband/wife (Abyss, True Lies), mother/daughter (Aliens), father/son (T2), guy/girl (T1, Titanic), etc)- what kind of relationship is at the core of Avatar? ----------- 2) Cameron's films have a lot of iconic visuals- is there any particular image he's looking forward to in this film, and would he be willing to reval what it is?

When the ship strikes an iceberg and sinks, several passngers and crew members survie the icy water and crushing depths by going into a Yoga trance. 75 years later they rise from the depths and terrorize the crew of a salvage vessel... HARRY'S Q&A - Who's Scoring the film? T3?
by Adam B
Jan 8th, 2007
09:15:55 PM
I want to know if James has any idea of who's scoring Avatar yet. Also, I remember reading a while ago that James originally had an idea for T3, but that the studio refused to give him complete creative control. Mind you I've also read quotes from him saying he didn't feel he had a story to tell. Could he make clear which was the case? If he had done T3, would he have gone straight to the Future War? Lastly, kind've a geek question: If the T800 had been successful in Terminator 1, or the T1000 successful in Terminator 2, what would each Terminator have done after successfully completing their mission; given that they can't self-terminate? Go on holiday? Thanks Harry!

Another Question for Cameron: Sets?
by Adam B
Jan 8th, 2007
09:50:09 PM
Will Iron Jim keep his highly detailed sets in the mix, among all the CG? One of the reasons I found Titanic so incredible is the visceral nature of the ship. You actually felt like you were there, because well, they recreated a huge portion of the ship. I just don't want Jim's movies to become too clean like most CG intensive movies. Cameron's movies have had some of the best set design around, but I guess most of that was with ILM. Sorry for all the questions, but I'm a JC nut, I wake up hoping to hear some production news from Jim. Honestly the most exciting director in film today.

Lucas/ILM created Photorealistic Alien Worlds, and Characters moving around in those Digital Worlds, using Blue Screen and Computers long before Cameron. Jan 8th, 2007

Hey Harry; ask Cameron why he went with Weta instead of ILM. Since the World of Avatar will be all Digital, ILM seems like a better choice. Weta has mostly used Miniatures and real Landscapes like New Zealand to create their Worlds(CGI with creatures). On the other hand, ILM has a lot more experience with Digital Worlds.

answer on the why weta
by Evil Hobbit
Jan 9th, 2007
03:07:50 AM
Saying the production process is similar to creating an animated film, Cameron estimated that the finished film will be 60% CG elements and 40% live action. He is aiming for the sort of photo-realism achieved by the CG sequences in "Kong" and the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. The competitive race among four VFX houses for the assignment to supervise the film's visual effects was won by Peter Jackson's Oscar-winning Weta Digital, which worked on "Rings." "Any one of them could have handled the volume of shots, the scale of the project, and handled the technology," Cameron said. "Joe Lettieri and his team had a history of translating facial performance capture to really good photo-real characters. The culture there is imbued from the head down with a passion for fantasy filmmaking. And they met us halfway on the price."

I can answer your question: Because you haven't done anything. That concept seems to be lost on you and your fellow delusional talkbacker, JDanielP. Do you know how a director gets a job directing a feature film? The producer saw something the director made, and liked it. Do you know how actors get cast in a feature film? The producer or director saw the actor give a performance in something, and they liked it. See the pattern? Even Sam Raimi didn't get SPIDER-MAN until the producers watched his filmography to see if he was the right guy to direct. I heard that the pathos from A SIMPLE PLAN and the star-crossed romance from FOR LOVE OF THE GAME were what sealed the deal for the execs at the studio. I'm in a state of stunned shock that you actually flew halfway around the world to try to get meetings with studios.....and you haven't made anything other than student/home movies! Quit trying to tell them what you can do. Show them what you can do.
