Sorry to go off topic folks. supermarch: Put down McKee. Story resolution, as it turns out, is NOT the be all and end all of good film-making. But even if it were, the "surface text"of C of M still holds up. Owen plays a man who has lost hope. He personifies a world which has lost hope. It has lost hope on account of it's inability to recreate itself, both in terms of the very act of baby-making but also in the broader, allegorical sense that oh bollocks - why should anyone have to explain it to you? Why, if you don't understand something, must it be some flaw in the thing you don't understand? Children Of Men is profound. It is also gripping and technically astonishing. Numerous intelligent critiques are available on the internet (try Rotten Tomatoes), maybe one of them will help you to understand why we are so impressed.

You want to see a film that will blow you away more than Children of Men? Hunt down a copy of the 1985 Russian film "Come and See" better than anything I saw released in 2006. I know you will completely dig this film if you haven't already seen it, classic and masterpiece are words bandied around far too often but in this case it wouldn't do it justice, possibly the greatest War film ever made, definitely one of the most harrowing and devastating.

So it's just one drawn out exposition on "hope"?

I got that. But that's pretty boring. And I said I wasn't being a dick so why are you being such a prick? Grow up.

It's far from profound. I would liken it to Emo. A bunch of overly indulged assholes going "what if there was no hope and like... for no ever explainable reason women stopped being able to have kids?". It's all way too forced. It starts with all these ideas and then instead of doing anything with them the whole picture just dwells on it and substitutes story with this neo-Vietnam gurilla fighting.

Without the whole baby crap Children of Men is just Cyborg without the kicks.

It is disorienting to see it mentioned here though because I was just thinking about buying it the other day, and it's not a real well known movie. Everywhere it is discussed it is just a debate between Russians and Germans about what did and did not happen but it is so skillfully made and vivid I've always wondered why it isn't more well known.

CHILDREN OF MEN = AMERICAN CYBORG

Didn't I pay to see this one before? Plot for "AC" from IMDB "After the nuclear war people are sterile. The only woman who was able to give life to a child has to take the child through the dangerous city to the ship to save it. " So " CHILDREN OF MEN" is really a loose remake of 1993's AMERICAN CYBORG. This new HHE2 trailer was cool in HD.

I tried watching it agin.... What the fuck is so beautiful about it? You're letting the euphoria of your personal life cloud your objective judgement about items in cinema now.... I don't trust you anymore... This trailer is not beautiful. It doesn't even convey a decent message about the film. All it does is show you things that decent film makers wouldn't show.... which is the dragging of the bodies to stage them for the climactic 3rd act chase sceen so the damsel in distress can scream when they come falling out of a closet at her... I'm dissapointed...

This is a great teaser, Turd. Maybe not so much when you download it online after being told that it is great. But when you see it unexpectedly before TURISTAS weeks ago like I did and wrote about on here, it is an A+ as far as teasers.

I mean come on dude. You see a big weird dude dragging a body through the desert. Then another big dude dragging a body through the desert. Then "The Hills Have Eyes 2."

That's fucking perfect! What more needs to be said? You want some of those hearbeats and electric buzzes and negative flashes and shit, go find a Michael Bay remake. This is for grownups. If you can't admire the simplicity and dark humor of this thing, you must be one of those guys who goes on the internet, names himself after some sort of bodily waste and posts disgusting misogynistic sex fantasies about unobtainable teen stars from tv. I am not one of those type of individuals so I really liked this teaser.

I was writing off this sequel because I don't know who the director is, but that teaser turned me around to naive optimism, which is the job of a teaser for a sequel to a remake. Apparently it is more of an action movie this time around, and takes place mostly inside those mines. Could be good, we shall see.

By the way Turd, as long as I've got you here, I wanted to remind you that it is now the year 2007, you are way fucking behind in figuring out that "gay" is not a good insult, but "you went on the internet and wrote about sticking your balls on the girl from felicity" is.

anyway thanks Turd

"no explanation"
by Vern
Jan 6th, 2007
11:39:45 PM
I liked the remake of The Hills Have Eyes, but one thing I didn't like is that embarrassing scene where the character "Big Brain" (the weirdo in the wheelchair) makes a big speech explaining everything to people who need to have things explained to them. I liked it much better in the original when you saw the family drive by a sign that said it was a military bomb testing range, and everybody was able to connect the dots between that and these mutants and was able to use imagination, the human brain, etc.

It seems like everybody who didn't like Children of Men is asking for them to explain everything. Why should they explain everything? Why does it matter? I don't see how explaining the origins of the virus or the baby would improve the story, but I can see how likely it would be to make the whole thing seem corny and unbelievable and the type of dumb Hollywood movie that it clearly is not.

It seems to me alot of movies that I watch over and over again over the years purposely leave things unexplained. In THE THING we know there was the team before Kurt Russel's that dealt with the thing before, but we don't know where it came from or what exactly happened to those guys, and at the end we don't know whether Kurt or Keith is the thing. And there are stupid people, and I have met some of thse people, who think that it sucks that those things are explained. It seems to me like that's kind of what you're asking of CHILDREN OF MEN.

In HILLS HAVE EYES or TEXAS CHAIN SAW most of what we know about the families is not directly explained in the movie, you have to kind of think about it and piece it together and study it, and that's part of what's great about it. This is even better in a movie that's trying to be thoughtful about the world like CHILDREN OF MEN. You guys can have your scientists making speeches in front of screens explaining everything, but I prefer Cuaron's approach.

Also, Cuaron secretly intended CHILDREN OF MEN as a sequel to HILLS HAVE EYES REMAKE in my opinion. That is why we are discussing this here. thanks guys.

...and then everyone creams over it because they think they're supposed to.

A preachy and really only subtly hinted subtext that itself is never fully realized does not a great movie make. The Last King of Scotland is the best movie of 2006.

Per this teaser: I liked it. I liked the remake too. As a premise it (this sequel) could work. I'll watch the movie and decide then on how good it is but the teaser does it's job and baits the viewer pretty well.

btw: That 'goth' line = weak. If anything it'll be more goth when you assbags go around telling people about this movie you've seen that they haven't and enlightening the masses like the pseudo elitists you embarrass yourselves as on a daily basis.

When you base your entire movie around a scientific premise and dwell on it throughout then not explaining it is not only frustrating it's aggravating since it leads the viewer to believe there will be closure.

If they never tell the viewers of Lost how the people got there or why or anything really then I'm sure you'll be pretty pissed off right? That's my feeling about this movie (Children of Men). It didn't end, it just stopped.

And it's not like people who didn't like it brought it up. Someone else did so here we are.

The Thing?
by kurdt420
Jan 6th, 2007
11:58:39 PM
You compare it to The Thing? I have to laugh. Did you even watch The Thing. In the first 20 seconds we see The spaceship crash into earth. Mystery solved. The Thing is an alien. As for the other team. We see what happened to them. They found the alien in the ice, dug it up and thawed it out. they then tried to stop the alien and failed. The last surviving member of the "other" team is shot while trying to shoot the dog. So all they had to say was women in the future cant have babies because thawed out aliens wont allow it. and the the aliens felt bad so they allowed one woman to get pregnant. I know its a shitty explanation....but at least its fuckin something!!

by Big Bad Clone
Jan 7th, 2007
12:24:45 AM
dunno but they sure do make a lot of hints. Like the toxic waste going in to the sewers from those plants they go by. Or the horrible pandemic flu mentioned. Even the religious groups could have been on to something. Or it could be some new age wish-washy "humanity became so crule it could not bear to bring another child into the world type" shit.

Hell, it could be Dr. Mann's dad for all I care.

What I loved is that nothing was fucking explained. No dialogue was wasted reashing what just happened. Unlike so many movies in which characters repeat people's names and constantly say shit that an audeince member with an IQ over 2 could fucking figure out.

Okay here's a better one then: NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. The scientists speculate why the dead are walking the earth but they don't seem to be right. By the time of DAWN OF THE DEAD they're on to the "no more room in hell" explanation. And nobody knows what to do and at the end of each movie, they have not solved the problem, the status quo is not restored. To me, CHILDREN OF MEN is the same type of story. I'm not saying you're wrong, obviously the movie didn't work for you. But personally I don't see why you would want that, to me it would ruin the movie.

Tailhook: thanks for belittling me and my years of hard work, but you're only kicking a hornet's nest by claiming I'm here to just make jokes about bad movies. Zombies are the holy grail of movie characters. I dont need an explanation for zombies. All you gotta do is show me a living rotting corpse chewing on a boring characters skull and you got two thumbs up from me. If children of Men had zombies instead of all the pointless dialog, then it woulda got 5 stars from me. Night of the living dead had zombies chewing on human intestines, Children of Men had a 200 year old Micheal Cane doing a bad Tommy Chong impression. I'll take the unexplained zombies any day

That trailer leaves me strangely nonplussed. I can't tell if I liked it or didn't like it, I'm just indifferent. Come and See is truly a masterpiece and one of my favorite movies. I guess it's closest relative would be The Thin Red Line but it is a lot more intense and surreal and has less poetic voiceover.

I remember when that movie came out I remember hearing the same thing from people: "It's amazing man truely what life is really about", "Fuck you seriously fuck you, if you don't like this movie you don't understand it". No actually you can understand movies and not like them. Children of Men is good, not amazing it's actually stuff I've seen before in many other movies. Also the action is filmed amazingly this is true, but if that makes it great then John Woo's Hard Boiled belongs in the same category. The only thing I really liked about this movie was how both political sides were full of shit. The government were killing people and acting like assholes, the "rebels" who claimed they weren't terrorists, were terrorists after all. That was cool but the rest "meh" I've seen it the themes before. Anyway about this trailer I saw it before children of men and the audience booed and hissed, did the same thing for The Hitcher remake and one guy actually yelled out "Stop remaking movies!!!" and the audience cheered. It was actually up lifting for me. I don't know why so many people on this site support remake garbage like this, but i hate it. I didn't see the first Hills Have Eyes simply because I saw the originally so I didn't find it necessary to watch the new version, same goes the hither.

"They" want to have everything exlpained like they did in MINORITY REPORT when at the end of the movie Tom Cruise exlpains. I felt that Spielberg treated his audience like a bunch of morons with that ... so I guess if there were Tom Cruise at the end of the Children of Men, let's say he could be a captain of the "Tomorrow" ship (that was it's name I think) the movie would be great to "them" ... he could wear a captain's hat, beard and smoke a pipe. Children of Men is a great movie, IMHO, and I think it majorly works due to not explaining what caused the inabilty to procreate (although there are several hints) I think some people are just being rather picky and audiences now have to have everything explained for them rahter than use their own mind. Back to topic, I think this teaser is a little impressive. I admit being a bit suprised when the camera suddenly moved. But all the torture-porn movies do nothing for me so I doubt I will check it out.

Kurdt - when did I "buckle," bud? I must not have been there when that happened. I don't know man, I can't convince you to like that movie, but let's put it this way. If you like Dawn of the Dead and yet all you get out of it is "zombies munching on a boring character's skull" then I'm not surprised we don't see eye to eye on other movies. We clearly aren't looking for the same thing, probaly aren't even watching the same movies. By the way, what did you think of Hills Have Eyes (remake or original)?

Spectre - I think we've seen this coming for a long time, but now that you've figured out a way to use "meh" in a sentence about HARD BOILED the word is officially dead forever. Good riddance, too. I spit on your grave, meh.

Wake me up when Ridley Scott, Tony Scott, David Fincher, Spike Jonze or Michel Gondry make a horror movie. I know reading comprehension is a dying skill, but still. And no, Seven and Hannibal are not horror movies, and only one of those was good. Lasse Hallström (note the spelling) is probably the weakest music video director of this list and ended up being the best story teller. Coincidence? I think yes.

Not just NOTLD but say The Birds, the original (good) Black Christmas, movies as bad (good) as Frogs and good (good) as Halloween. When I was a kid I would often hear older folks speak derisively about something having a "Hitchcock" ending, you know something that was open ended or inconclusive. I spent time back then trying to explain why it was often the right thing to do. Never worked out. This is the same kind of thing. And Vern? Thanks for hanging out in the talkbacks and thanks for being fond of some underbelly pictures. We don't all love the same crappy low budget sleaze, but we all love some of it, and it's fun to roll around in the mud arguing over it.

Sorry bout the buckling thing. I was watching clerks last night and had nothin better to say at that moment. As for Hills Have Eyes. I don't hate remakes as much as some do. I like the original when I was a kid. It wasnt brilliant by any means but had some good shocking and disturbing moments. I don't mind remaking a film as long as you bring some new ideas to the table. That's why I belive the chainsaw massacre remakes work for me. They took the classic story and added some new twists too it. such as the sherriff character and Leatherface making a fresh mask outa that bignosed guys face. These are scenes I remeber and enjoyed. I tried to thing of something new they brought to the table for the Hills Have Eyes remake and I come up with nothing. Im afraid it falls under my dissapointing section along with other wasted remakes such as Psycho, The Omen, and the sacraligious Manchurian Candidate.

Ok, regarding the teaser...I think it's ok. An interesting idea that certainly does its job, but nothing great and spooge-worthy. As for Children of Men, well, $20 says that if they had given an explanation as to why women can no longer have children there would be people arguing about how stupid that reason is, and how full of holes it is, and yada-yada-yada. And who knows? Maybe they would've given a shitty ass reason, and that would've single-handedly ruined the movie. Instead, people have to understand that not all your questions will be answered. As a matter of fact, the movie doesn't even try to do it. It's not necessarily about that. It shows us a specific world and then proceeds to tell us a story within that world. The story they chose to tell is not the one that explains the current state of the world. Also, something no one has mentioned...how faithful is this movie to the source? Perhaps PD James doesn't provide her readers with an explanation. I haven't read the book, so I don't know. But there's a chance that the lack of explanation for infertility is not actually Cuaron's decision...

CHILDREN OF MEN was unbelievable.

Simply one of the best films of the year. I really don't understand some people, they come across as really intelligent when they write, they have a great filmic knowledge, yet they completely fail to grasp what certain films are actually about. CHILDREN OF MEN may be a Science Fiction film, it may deal with the end of the world and a futuristic society, but the genius of the film lies in the fact that all of that is merely a BACKRDROP to the story of Theo Faron, who manages to find hope – both for himself and for the human race. That's the story. It didn't NEED to explain why women cannot give birth - leaving it ambiguous makes the film more intelligent and also creates room for YOUR OWN IDEAS. I really can't believe people are criticizing the film for not explaining enough - they obviously missed the point entirely.

not the other way round, sorry people. As for the lack of explanation, in the book it's hinted at as being God's wrath for secularism, which is nice. The novel and the film are VERY different. The novel had a little more background depth to exactly whats been happening but it's very slow. I much prefer the film as it's dynamic and funny and wise. True, it's not an intellectual movie, it's very much one for the heart not the head and approaching it like so works beautifully for me. As for this trailer...ya gotta love Devendra Banhart's "freak" amaericana folk music being used. It's darkly, humourously appropriate not to mention a great song in it's own right. Still think the film will probably suck though.

Wasserman mentioned the song in the teaser is by Devendra Banhart, but he didn't say what song it was. Any chance someone knows the name of the track? In any case, I liked the choice of song for both films' trailers.

the film isn't based around the question "why can't women have babies" and it's the damn trailers fault for making it seem so. Also saying "you only like it because you were told too" is on a par with saying "you don't like it because you don't get it" i.e childish and desperately dishonest.

Listen, when you make your own movie, you can make it however you want. You can use exposition galore and spoon-feed your audience every single little answer they might want (and every answer they might not want, for that matter). You can wrap it up in a beautiful little package for them and top it off with a lovely little bow. Maybe the trailer does make it seem like there will be some sort of solution to the problem...however, that's not the movie we're given. Instead, this is a movie about a dystopian future, where people have lost all hope and feel there is nothing, really, left to live for. We're given one guy who embodies this and then follow him on his quest to save this girl. Along the way he rediscovers what it is to have purpose and hope. The film also tackles certain political issues and the whole immigration thing. Now, if you didn't find any of that compelling, so be it. But don't be a jerk and go calling people idiots because they enjoyed something you didn't.

Other than "why can't women have babies?" to which the reply is "i don't know for certain because the film or book don't say why". I'm sure PD James has an idea but seeing as she never answers it either it's safe to assume it's rather irrelevant. Just like it is in the movie. When you are being chased and shot at asking "but why are you pregnant" is not all that important. Answering the question wasn't what Children Of Men was about. What other questions have you asked? Why do people like it? Well that's been answered by different people all throught the talkback. What you said was as childish as all the people who told you you didn't like it because you didn't "get" it.

And after all that, Cameron you still haven't answered the question. What's so great and glamorous about it? Aside from the question it's a slow paced action movie without much action. So what is the appeal for you? Baaaaaa

Crimson King made some good points and I see why he liked it (thanks!). It's about one guy representing a world that has lost hope. He finds it in the question. Personally I think that could have been done a lot better. The political issues and immigration stuff was way too preachy for me. How hard is it to show disheveled people being rounded up onto trains and buses and get sympathy from your viewers who are well conditioned to make the appropriate comparison? Not very. I still feel the movie lacked the necessary resolution and appropriate ending. Michael Caine rocking out made me laugh and cringe at the same time. Points for that. That's all though.

I've just started reading the novel. There is no explanation for the fertility problem... they don't even specify that it is a virus. Children just stop being born. It could be a virus, it could be linked to pollution or it could just be mother nature saying "Time's up...make way for the next species". I think this is all covered in about 3 pages of the novel. The story isn't about a virus. It's about hope in a hopeless world. It's also a great film but perhaps not for those who need every single thing explained to them. If you are one of those folks then you'll hate the ambiguous ending even more...

Just because assholes used to say it in the '80s and now their kids started saying it again doesn't mean it's not a stupid and bigoted thing to say. We might as well bring back "eenie meeney miney moe, catch a nigger by the toe" if that's your attitude. It doesn't mean to catch a black man anymore, now it's just a saying, it's harmless fun. Hooray!

You can use any words you want but if you say something stupid and bigoted then you will look like a backwards stupid bigot and I don't got a problem pointing fingers and laughing at you. I'm guilty myself, I've tried to stop calling people fruity or saying a movie is retarded after some people complained and I realized they had a point. And I cringe whenever I hear some stupid kid saying things like, "my cellphone is so ghetto, it doesn't even have video." Yes they're just words but I'm a writer man, I respect the words. You should pick the right words if you want respect.

Vern, I remember hearing it back in the late 70s and it wasn't being used by homophobic assholes, it was used by regular people (who were kids but those were all I mainly knew so I can't say whether adults said it) and it didn't refer to something being homosexual. Do you see the slippery PC slope you're on, apparently considering all kinds of harmless terms (like "ghetto", "fruity", "retarded", etc) to be bigoted and off limits. The harm of the words is dependent on the intent and context of the words, which is why even the N-word will eventually be meaningless (despite Kramer's efforts). I agree that language is important but it is also fluid. So many words that were shocking once aren't anymore. I saw Shaun of the Dead in Oakland and when Nick Frost said "what's up niggas" it got a big laugh from the mainly black audience. The Hills Have Eyes remake should have made even more use of Beast than the original. Made Beast like a super-dog that saves everyone, kills the mutants one by one, and comes trotting back to the RV carrying the baby.
