did not make anyone's list this year. I am not defending this film. I thought it was slow and boring. Its just sad that a character so important to American movie and comic book history was used in such a terrible movie. And to top it all off, Superman Returns will probably stay around longer than any of Harry's top 5 films of 2006.

I saw this film at a horror screening in leciester sq, only film me and my cousin saw. It was a good film, not a film that would be in a top 10 list. Bits about it i thought was stupid, like eating food at a table where there is a skinny eyeless creature with his eyes on a plate. And knowing she has limited time just fucks about forever only to get out anyway? And leaving the chalk on the table she is behind? Its a fairy tale, fair enough, but you can have this stuff in a kids film and im fine. But its an adults film, and shouldnt have this stupid stuff in it, it detracts from the story. Although, it is a good film though that everyone needs to watch at least once. I did come to the conclusion that he should of cut out the violence, which can be cut with no lost to the story, and released it as a kids film. Dont get me wrong i hate all this watered down 12a horror stuff, but i think it would fit in with the likes of Dark Crystal and Labyrinth much better. And i enjoy them to films as well. I would like for him to make a film set 100% in the spanish civil war, and 100% in a fantasy world. Pans Lab had two interesting worlds, it was jarring to be dragged from either of them. Ok, i may not agree with it being number 1, but its worth watching, and i will watch it again.

V for Vendetta was a movie I was looking forward to for a long time. But I was very disappointed with it when I saw it. To begin with, I think Portman was completely wrong for the character she played. But, normally, I can look past that if the script is good. This script was NOT good. I don't really care for 'preachy' movies, but I knew that this one was going to be preachy going in, so I was expecting it. What I didn't expect was it to preach the exact same message every five minutes for two hours. Also, plot twists were badly hidden and easy to predict (now who actually believed Portman was being held by the government and not "V" himself?).

These were all 2006 releases in whichever country I saw them. 10) "36: Quai des Orfèvres" Structurally flawed, but engrossing moral drama with Daniel Auteuil, the best movie star in the world, and Gerard Depardieu, the ugliest. 9) "Les Poupées Rousse" Endearing, idiosynchratic sequel to "L'Auberge Espagnole", and proof that Romain Duris and Kelly Reilly should be big stars. 8) "Right at Your Door" Gripping thriller that makes the most of a low budget, taut structure and great acting. 7) "La Science des Rêves" The world's best looking screen couple: Charlotte Gainsbourg and Gael Garcia Bernal. Plus Alain Chabat, if you're into that kind of thing. 6) "Grizzly Man" Werner Herzog finds a man nearly as insane as Klaus Kinski, and documents his doomed attempt to connect with nature. Horrifying and funny, often at the same time. 5) "Children of Men" Atmospheric, beautifully designed satire/fantasy/action movie. Clunky exposition saved by charismatic performances, plus a Pink Floyd reference that garners about three chuckles per audience. 4) "Casino Royale" James Bond is rescued from the shrieking abyss by the unlikely trio of Daniel Craig, who should be above this, Martin Campbell, who should be beneath it, and Paul Haggis. Confident, decadent and supremely entertaining. 3) "The Departed" "Who am I? I'm the guy who does his fuckin' job. You must be the other guy." The most fun you can have at the cinema this year. 2) "United 93" For whatever reason I felt compelled to see this. You can argue whether or not it should exist, but it does, and taken on its own terms it's flawless. Tense, harrowing, deeply humbling and unforgettable. 1) "Caché" Confounding, menacing thriller about guilt from Michael Haneke, the world's most intelligent film-maker. Ingeniously constructed and very disturbing. Bodes well for next year's "Funny Games". Honorable mentions go to "Babel" for the story set in Japan, and "Red Road" for the first sex scene in film history to actually resemble the real thing. Sorry, I'm not really into fantasy so I haven't seen "Pan's Labyrinth" although I'm sure it's great.

'Children Of Men''s immigration plot is about the growing problem in the UK! You see, it's set in the UK mmmkay? I know you'd like to believe everything is about you guys over there but no, this was a very english film with a very english feel. It's just a shame it's taken a Spanish director to do that. Yes, of course it's covering themes that everyone in the world is experiencing at one point or another and can understand. However, don't for one second think that this is actually winking at politics and current events in the states whilst being set in the UK ala V For Vendetta. Children of Men is the film V for Vendetta should have been had it not been a raping of the source material. Alfonso Cuarón actually understands British culture and current events unlike the hacks behind V for Vendetta, who should still be ashamed of themselves. Children of Men is the film of the year, V for Vendetta is a joke.

Children of Men is a very British film. I thought V for Vendetta was just okay as a fantasy/thriller, but if my limited comic book knowledge is correct, it was written in the Thatcher era when that kind of militant neo-fascism was actually relevant. Now the problems are more complex and V for Vendetta seems simplistic as anything other than a broad analogy. I wouldn't say Children of Men is concerned with the government's politics, more with their lack of control on issues like immigration. It's also an amazing film about widespread despair, which could so easily happen if the government continues to not really do much of anything and hope that the problems solve themselves. But, in another strength compared to V for Vendetta, Children of Men doesn't shove these messages in your face. They're in the background for you to pick up on if you want. It's an excellent film, and I hope Cuaron gets an Oscar nod for his work.

1. Casino Royale 2. Babel 3. Children of Men 4. Drawing Restraint 9 5. Little Miss Sunshine 6. Volver 7. Superman Returns 8. Pan's Labryinth 9. The Descent 10. An Inconveinant Truth. So yeah, I didn't see most of the great ones this year, yet. Bond surprised the hell out of me and was amazing. Babel and Children were no brainers. Drawing Restraint 9 I saw at the Karlovy Vary FF in Karlovy Vary,Czech Republic. I've seen Barney's Creammaster Cycle in the cinema and Drawing was like WAY out there, cinematic art. Sunshine made me laugh, Volver was another Karlovy Vary experience, Superman blew me away but Pan, not so much. Not the big fan everyone else seems to be. Al Gore should have been president and he made a film and it's outstanding. Daniel Craig IS James Bond and that's awesome.

Don't call us fools mate. It ain't cut and dry either. Any smart person who has read it would obviously think that it meant that the hero is alive. Wether this is true or not, it don't really matter as it has peed us off just to read that and make us believe that we know the spoiled ending as far as we are concerned, and again, this already alters our entertainment of the film when we go in to see it, as we have now built up a preconception of the ending. For a person like us who have brains, yes, we all try to be positive when reading that spoiler and hope that Harry is talking about the ending metaphorically speaking like you pointed out, and it could be open to different interpretations. But this is only out of desperation and trying to convince ourselves that we didn't necessarily have the ending spoilt. At the end of the day though, to any normal intelligent person, we're still gonna come away from reading Harry's line more or less believing that the hero does survive rather than interpreting it any other way. For someone with brains it's a a pretty cut and dry sentance to read that line as, and for someone with brains who should know better, it's a pretty cut and dry sentance not to type out for people to read, as most of us are gonna feel that the ending has been spoiled for us, no matter what way we look at it, wether it be literal or metaphorical. In the end, Harry should know so much better than to write anything that simply reads and shouts SPOILER to people, as it still ruins the movie for these people in their hearts. The only real way we can try to get around reading this, is to try and forget we ever did read that line.

is that V tricked Portman into becoming his ally. He tortured her physically and emotionally and then when she realizes it is him "Oh my dear, but I just had to show you what the government WOULD do to you...". "Oh? That's what they WOULD do? But they didn't and you did??? OK, where is my membership card?!??!" I also didn't see the point of blowing up the Parliament. Say it was a symbol all you want, but it was a symbol of something more democratic. I think killing the LEADER of the fascist destroyers of that more democratic rule was symbol enough. That's like if there were a true dictator in the US, some radical killed him and THEN blew up the Washington Monument just for shits and giggles. What's the point? But then... you gotta make big boom! Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the movie. I just find its motivations hard to swallow.

The Prestige was one of my favourites this year, I’m a bit surprised it’s not in Harry’s top ten, the guy has pretty good taste. A film that Harry has probably not seen and would be in my ten is “Paris Je T’aime”, over 20 directors contributing a short film about Paris, sounds like it would not work but it certainly does.

Please spare a thought for The Man Without A Face, Mel Gibson's apparently forgotten directorial debut, in which the hero (either the man without a face or the kid, take your pick) SPOILER survives. This is not a great film, which may be why no one remembers it, but I think it should be considered when discussing recurring themes, etc. in the work of this world-renowned actor/director/humourous drunk. However I was gonna post one last time and quote or refer back to what jfp2006 said, which to many people who read him, actually makes us look more correct in what we think the ending will be. Sorry GilesT but I'll try to make this the last reference to Harry's still unedited line. jfp said that the the hero 'survives' the obstacles and ordeals throughout the course of the film'. Well think about these words. If he 'survives' these throughout the 'course' (the running) of the 'film' (as an entire piece, as he didn't determine 'part' of the film), that DOES mean that he IS alive at the end. Your sentances pretty much cut and dry spells out what us complainers already said earlier, to anyone with brains. Makes us wonder about yours as you typed it though. Thanks for shooting yourself in the foot and backing us up and making yourself look the idiot instead of us. Anyway, sorry GilesT, this is the last you'll hear about it from me.

It's the one thing that ruins the film for me (even though I love the rest of it). As for 'tricking' Portman to be his ally ... I think they messed up translating the comic to the screen. The whole idea was to test her loyalty and also subject her to what he had been subjected to in order to strengthen her to replace him. Of course, since she ended up not replacing him due to the ending ... well, that makes the end of the movie even more of a misstep.

First of all Harry, I dislike it immensely when you do this to me. Thank you for putting the Departed on the list, at least some of us were able to see it. You should have 2 top 10 lists, one for the films that you loved more than anything (that can include anything) and then a list of films you loved that the majority of people saw, not just "buttnumb" films. Thank you, you run the best site on the web. Here's my list: 10) A Scanner Darkly I just recently saw this on DVD for the first time and was blown away. It's a creepy little tale about drugs and undercover cops that takes place 7 years from now. I had to watch it a second time, I was enthralled by the animation, the story, and Robert Downey Jr. and Rory Cochrane's creepy performances. 9) Borat Most quotable film of 2006, and without a doubt the cultural phenomenon of the year. This is the Napoleon Dynamite of the year and even though it was not an original hit, it connected with people. I laughed my ass off, I won't lie to you. I will be very happy if SBC gets an Oscar nod, but he better not knock off Leo for the Departed, because I will be so mad I'll want to spit (thank you Life Aquatic). 8) The Great New Wonderful The little-film-that-didn't for many people only because it was a direct to DVD indie featuring character actors. The film was a post-9/11 dramedy featuring Tony Shalhoub, Tom McCarthy, Judy Greer, Jim Gaffigan, Stephen Colbert, Olympia Dukakis, Edie Falco, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Will Arnett. The film is a cute little film, totally watchable, and features the film quote of the year from my Stephen: "No, actually he's a selfish, incorrigible monster with a heart made of shit and splinters." See it, I know you haven't. 7) V For Vendetta The first film I saw that came out in 2006 and was my favorite until I saw some other films I'll get to in this list. I love this film because of Hugo Weaving's Vaudevillian style of portraying V and I was so in love with Natalie's short hair this year. This movie kicked ass and should've been bigger than it was, and should have definitely been the savior to the movie biz, not Pilates of the Caribbean. 6) For Your Consideration I love Christopher Guest films. Back when I reviewed this, I said that I didn't like A Mighty Wind. Well, I've revisited it and I do like it, not as much as his other films, but I am a fan. This film was spectacularly cynical against the Oscar season, something I hold dearly to my heart. I loved Catherine O'Hara to death in this film and was again completely thrilled with John Michael Higgins, one of the most untapped character actors of our time. 5) Marie Antoinette This film was already set to be a favorite because of Sofia Coppola, but if I had seen it without being a fan I would have loved it. The music, the clothes, the Chuck Taylors. I don't care what people say, this movie was a dreamlike version of a period piece. It's the Eternal Sunshine of Pride & Prejudice. Kiki Dunst was incredible and will be unfortunately going to the Oscars this year sans nomination, but I really think she pulled off one of the best performances of the year. 4) United 93 This was the only movie that meant something to me this year, on a personal level. I was proud of this film. There was no motive for this movie, Paul Greengrass just wanted to honor those who perished. This was an extraordinary film. 3) The Departed This movie proves yet again that Martin Scorsese is a filmmaker who is rivaled by very few. The Aviator was a hundred times better than Million Dollar Baby and even though I haven't seen Clint's new films, I'm sure it's the same situation. But here I am again waiting for a Marty win, when old Clint is coming along with a last minute Oscar winner. Griping aside, this film rocked. The music was great, and the acting of Jack, Mark, Leo, Martin, and Matt blew me away. Everyone said when this came out that Jack had the best supporting actor spot but Matt Damon was definitely the best actor in this film. I was thoroughly satisfied and I can't wait to revisit it. 2) Dreamgirls I just saw this film a few days after its wide release and was so happy and warm and fuzzy and all those other adjectives we use when we feel complete bliss. I am in LOVE with Jennifer Hudson. Give her the Oscar, please. Her powerful delivery of songs like "One Night Only," "I Am Changing," and her breathtaking performance of "And I Am Telling You" gave me chills. I watched her and her alone in every scene she was in. Give Eddie Murphy the Oscar. PLEASE. JIMMY GOT SOUL. Eddie Murphy really did achieve greatness in this movie. This film is beyond words. I cried, I won't lie. The music and the brilliant direction by Bill Condon are the only that could possibly take on Scorsese as a possible contender this year. I love this movie. I really hope I get to see it again. This movie was great from beginning to end. 1) Little Miss Sunshine No doubt about it. The best film of 2006 is Little Miss Sunshine. I've been saying it since I saw it when it opened. This film does have standout performances that I will mention, but it really was the ensemble that made the movie great. I love Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris and I really hope they keep this up. It was their first feature film together and it is a possible contender in many categories. Steve Carell, Alan Arkin, Paul Dano, Greg Kinnear, Toni Collette and Abigail Breslin all carried out the most fulfilling characters I saw in a film this year. I'm so happy that a film like this exists. Thank you gods of film!

I´m almost sure "The Fountain" would ve been my favorite film this year, but hasnt seen it yet. Instead it´s "The Prestige", wich by all means is a masterpiece of screenwriting with high production value: can´t believe how many people want to hate this movie for being challenging (and considering BO, "The Fountain" seems to suffer from the same). The Prestige stands the same with Children of Men and Pans Labirynth. "Casino Royale" is the first movie in serveral years that you can buy the action and tipical testosterone fueled fantasies without feeling stupid or guilty. Finally, while "The Aviator" was great Scorsese filmaking, but it doesnt stand a chance with the focused narration of really good acted characters in "Million Dollar Baby".

As far as I'm aware, 300 is just wowing people with the visuals. Casino Royale DESERVES to be in any list of the best movies of 2006. I'd also say The Prestige. And I enjoyed the hell out of Dead Man's Chest also, but many people didn't because they stupidly thought they were going to see a Jack Sparrow comedy instead of a fantastically dark middle chapter of an excellent (so far) trilogy. Instead Harry just gives us a fuck you with movies we haven't seen yet just because of PAYMENT or BIAS due to his 'friendships' to MAKE us go see them. I agree with Harry on Departed and Apocalypto, two very intense films. Surprisingly, no one has mentioned some of the VERY BEST films of the year: Manderlay and A Prairie Home Companion. Other unbelievable films this year: The Proposition, Monster House, The Science of Sleep, Borat, Inland Empire and A Scanner Darkly. Rocky definitely surpassed my expectations, despite its glaring flaws, but it wasn't one of my absolute favorites. And as for The Black Dahlia, that suckkkkkkkkked ballllllllllls. "Lawrence of Arabia" 70mm print at the AFI in Silver Springs, MD at the end of August. The room holds about 440 people and I ended up having to sit in the front row. Not bad for a movie older than you are that plays annually for a couple of weeks at the AFI. "Lawrence" owns your ass! "The Departed" was great, too. I'll be checking out "Children of Men" tonight at the Georgetown 14 if you're interested...wifey is taking a pass until she reads the book.

Apocalypto was great too, but the ending wasn't about how weak the Mayans were, it was about how if you think you're too cool for school, you'll forget that there are always bigger and better fish out there that will be able to fuck up your shit. Buttnumbathon. there is just one problem. You live in Texas. Its great that you have a place where you can call and summon folks who live locally to your own festival. But those films you see before everyone dont travel. some do but on the whole, quirky films are either ignored by the general populous, dumped by distributors or have. Hard candy and brick are tow examples. Both were hyped by this site and yet they were two of the most mediocre films I have seen all year. I dont what 300 is going to be like but it maybe be lots of bottle and no neck, all style and no substance. One of the worst things to hear is when someone says you have seen such and such a film then you cant call your self a movie fan. Its like when a dj says if you dont have lambchop in your music collection then you dont have much of a collection. I know who lambchop are but its like being outside a clique. sorry for the rant.

Am I the only one who found all the love heaped on Little Miss Sunshine somewhat baffling? I just couldn't identify with any of the characters. Mostly because those kind of families only exist so lazy indie film directors won't have to work too hard. Hence, it never felt honest or real to me.

Thanks for spoiling Apocolypto for all of us whom haven't seen it. And what the hell is the point in making such a list when half the films are going to be released next year? The only film I have seen and would certainly not include on a top ten best list is Rocky, although Harry always did rate movies in which he had a good cinema experience high. So what does this mean, if you have a vibrant and electric crowd the movie is better? So the quality of the movie depends on who you watch it with? I just don't buy this crap, its similar to how he gives blind love and blanket immunity to films he watches with is repeatedly mentioned and bragged about finance. I love you Harry, you have unbridled passion which virtually no other reviewer matches, however, your criterias for reviewing is absurd, and arbitrary. I think you really need to analyze the way you rank and rate movies, your fiance and the crowd reaction should not be such a massive deciding factor as to whether the movie is worthy.

I saw THE HOST with a Korean audience and they were laughing at that mourning scene as much I was (Australian). Are you fucking kidding me? Rocky, first of all, was piss. It was not what it needed to be. It was a bunch of dumb come-from-the-heart monologues mumbled at each other by all the characters. That was practically a montage in itself. It was annoying. It was boring. The (real) montage was fun. The fight was fun for a minute and then boring. The film was missing a reel, Harry, the one where we see the opponent go to his old management from the hood and then back to the hot shot team. IT DIDN'T EVEN MAKE FUCKING SENSE. I know Stallone did 230 talkbacks answering the rabble and you've got a hard-on for that--as well you should. So I'll forgive you for being "too close" to the subject to have a real opinion worth a damn. Now make the other 9 TOP MOVIES FROM 2006 ONES THAT WERE RELEASED IN FUCKING 20006!!!

... watching you guys wig out about Harry's list or Capone's list or Massawyrm's list, I feel like I should say something before I get around to making mine. I'm still watching movies like a maniac to make sure I give everything I can a chance, though. I will say this about the major issue that many of you seem to have: thanks to international release dates and film festivals, "dates" sort of don't exist. Yes, it's different for those of us who are immersed in film all year long, but that doesn't change the fact that these lists are about the experiences each of us had with film in the last year, and sometimes, that means we saw things that other people might not until next year. Look at how many of the Talkbackers from the UK have GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK or BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN on their lists for this year. Those are films that were definitely 2005 films for us, but if we'd waited until everyone everywhere could see them before we included them on a list, we'd just be dealing with them now. I don't think my list is anywhere near as heavily weighted with 2007 wide releases as Harry's, but there are a few titles on there that have only really played fests in the US, and I guess I should warn you now so if you choose to completely discount my opinion, you can get ready to do so now.

It takes longer to open in europe/uk/ireland or sometimes it wont open at all and go to DVD instead. Which is why somep eople may find it weird that Good Luck and Good night is on the list as well as Children of men. Another film that I saw and that I loved during 2006 about burt monroe, the indian runner which I saw on DVD. That was another 5/5, although I doubt if Burt pissed on a lemon tree.

I wrote before about this movie and I'm sticking to my guns. This movie SUCKS. Trust me. Comparing this to Halloween and Evil Dead 2 should be considered a mortal sin. Thank you so very much for these films at BNAT Harry. I was surprised how AWAKE I remained throughout bnat8...but shouldn't be considering the offerings included films like these. I had tears in my eyes as Christina Ricci sang "This Little Light of Mine." And 300...my God, just beautiful. Blood was actually a CHARACTER in this film...so amazingly rendered. Loved it.

My personal standard is "Was this film shown at a public venue in this year?" Film festivals count in my book, and since BNAT and Fantastic Fest are indeed festivals, I don't see a huge issue. Having said that, I wouldn't include SMOKIN' ACES or 300 for consideration this year because I slept through parts of them, and I wouldn't include KNOCKED UP because what we saw was an unfinished cut. But there's something fairly high on my list that played Toronto, and I consider it eligible for that reason. If you didn't have a chance to see it, I'm sorry, but I did, and these lists aren't "Best Films That Everyone Everywhere Had A Reasonable Chance Of Seeing In 2006." The only time I think there should be hard rules for this sort of thing is when you're discussing awards eligibility. And since we're not...

i agree with Harry, my favorite movies are those that can be rewatched. There are great movies like Braveheart or something that i can't watch over and over, so while good, not my favorite. The Fountain is in the category of a movie i can watch once, but that's it. shrugs the SW Saga, to me, is the best film of our time.

Ever since I saw 'Rocky Balboa' & 'Apocalypto'. It's renergized my faith in there being good movies out there. I've only seen 3 movies on your list. The two I mentioned and 'The Departed'. Which I thought was ok, but no where near Scorsese's other classics. The Departed has one of those silly endings where people die one after the other so suddenly. It's so over the top. That being said, I still enjoyed the performances. Especially Nicholson. I also think this is Scorsese's year for Oscar. He'll get it best director for the Departed, but in reality it's Oscars way of rewarding him for all his work. So yeah, what I wanted to say is thanks Harry. You got me excited to see Pans Labyrinth, Black Snake Moan & 300. I'm so looking forward to these films like a little school girl having to pee after class.

Perhaps semi-public, at best. I didn't try to get in this year, so I'm not saying that out of envy of those that had the fortune of making it. It's just not an event that many people can realistically hope to attend, hence calling it "public" seems slightly incorrect. By the by, when do Pan's and Children of Men get a wider release? Might it not be useful to see a Best of 2007 list as possibly leading you to films you would not otherwise have heard of? Why does it just have to be a regurgitation of the same 20-30 films everyone else has seen, but in an order different to your own so you can say "I can't believe you put The Prestige over V for Vendetta!" (or vice versa). I remember a few years ago when Harry reviewed Polanski's The Pianist and said "Unless something incredible comes along this will be my film of the year." A fortnight later - The Pianist is at number 2. On top is some Korean film nobody has ever fucking heard of. Oh, how the talkback flowed with cries of elitism. How were Americans ever supposed to see a Korean film? How DARE Harry try and convince us this - what was its name? Sympathy for Mister Vengeance? - could be a great film? WE'D never heard of it! As if this unknown director would EVER make films that WE would be able to see! Harry was just being a show off clever-clever elitist. Yeah, right. Having said that, Children of Men was the best film of the year, it was out in October here in Australia, it played for two months, virtually everybody here loved it, so tough.

can't really argue your rationale, and of course you, Harry, Quint et al are entitled to list whatever you want, but... What if your were a music critic? Would you list albums that had leaked, or that, say if you wrote for Pitchfork or some other on-line music rag, that were given to you months in advance? I mean, P-Fork rationalized not having "Crazy" or "St. Elsewhere" by saying they were 2005, but yet they go and put Tapes and Tapes in their top-50, and their album was released in the States at the tail end of 2005. It would thrown the entire mechanics of top-10 albums off if music critics were like that, is basically my long winded point... Yeah, you're dead on about how fuckered the whole release process is, yes, none of this really matters, but I think what most of us want is for ya'll to kinda play by the rules we're forced to choke on, which, I guess, would be screenings at a theater open to the general public. I dunno, I wasted enough precious braincells on this admittedly futile nit-pick, but thanks for responding up above anyway. And not that it matters, but I won't be including any of the films I saw at BNAT, but will have "The Death of Mr. Lazarescu" in my top-10, even tho' it played at Cannes in 2005...

Actors have the most pull in the Academy so I hope to god they don't nominate Bobby as Best Picture like our favorite here on AICN, Crash. Oh, and I think United 93 will unfortunately be shut out of the Best Picture nominees. For a good foreshadowing of this, here are the Producer Guild nominees for Best Picture: Babel, Little Miss Sunshine, Dreamgirls, The Departed, The Queen. Pretty classic as far as possible Oscar nominees go...three heavy dramas, a musical, and the little movie that pleased everyone(mostly, except for the cynical film nerd. The theatre I saw it in with was one of the best theatre experiences I've been in for a long time. People were screaming by the end) So, there you go.

What a great comedy. Comedies tend to "miss" for me more than any other film genre, I usually only like about 5 or so a year, and this year was no exception. It may be because I tend to find broad and gross-out humor unfunny, a comedy really has to have the sting of truth to it to make me laugh. Little Miss Sunshine has that, and for me its just perfect. yeah, there were some occasional things that I had seen before ( I winced at the "Im not smoking" gag...stale), but the fact is much about the film worked...mainly the characterizations. I have a feeling the people who call this film overrated have a low opinion of most comedies for the same reasons I do, but this film worked for me. Would I put it on a top 10 list? Probably not, but it would be at or near the top of a top 10 COMEDIES list. If you want to see a COMEDY, this is a good one. Borat is funnier, but I'd put it in the same category with Jackass...a series of impromptu pranks and stunts that really doesn't completely qualify as "cinema" for me. Damn funny though.

A word for all the folks who merely liked it, with the addendum that it did seem like the sort of movie that would improve on a repeat viewing: not in your wildest dreams could you imagine a movie getting this much deeper and better with repeats. ------------------------------ ----- There were 3 masterpieces this year that I've seen so far: The Prestige, Half Nelson, and Children of Men. Missed The Fountain and haven't seen United 93 or Pan's Labyrinth yet. Right now I've got as 4-10 Stranger Than Fiction (huge extra boost if you're a literary geek), The Queen, V For Vendetta, The Departed, Happy Feet in IMAX (a stunning, delightful visual experience), A Scanner Darkly, and Little Miss Sunshine (all the criticism is valid but I laughed my ass off). This is probably the best year for sf and fantasy films EVER, with six or seven movies, any of which could have won the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation in many earlier years (e.g., most years from 1995-2000).

I don't know about everyone else, but for me this was a really great year for film. Lets think about it for a moment: we had three masterpieces from a trio of God-given Mexican filmmakers who represent (for me at least) the future of cinema, another masterpiece (Volver) from the Spanish auteur who has been amazing us since the 80's, two powerful (and non-exploitative) films about 9/11, some really great comedies (Little Miss Sunshine, Borat, Thank You for Smoking, Stranger than Fiction, Talladega Nights, TRISTAM SHANDY, The Death of Mr. Lazarescu), two very promising works by debut filmmakers (Half Nelson, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints), extremely well-crafted action films with political subtexts (Apocalypto, Blood Diamond, V for Vendetta), a "who cares what they think" act of self-expression from a true auteur (The Fountain), Scorsese's return to gangster-movie bliss (The Departed), Eddie Murphy's return to talent (Dreamgirls), the crowd-pleasing returns of James Bond and Rocky Balboa, some well-reviewed horror films (The Descent, The Host...neither of which I've gotten to see yet...dammit!), a David Lynch film (need I say more?), TWO Clint Eastwood films, TWO Richard Linkletter films (both as different as night and day), TWO great concert films (Dave Chapelle's Block Party, Neil Young: Heart of Gold), Robert Altman's genuinely Altmanesque swan song (A Prairie Home Companion), the best Westerns since Unforgiven (The Proposition and 2005's Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada), perhaps the best live-action family film since Whale Rider (Akeelah and the Bee), two stellar ANIMATED family films (Monster House, Cars), two excellent films about magic (The Prestige, The Illusionist), a superb historical-comedy-drama (The Queen), and a BOATLOAD of great documentaries (When the Levees Broke, Why We Fight, Who Killed the Electric Car?, Jesus Camp, An Inconveniant Truth). WHEW!! And thats just for starters. I haven't even mentioned L'enfant, The Good Shepard, The Good German, Perfume, Hard Candy, Marie Antoinette, Miami Vice, Jackass: Number Two, Inside Man, Bobby, The Science of Sleep, Shortbus, What is It?, Superman Returns, The Notorious Betty Page, Hollywoodland, Idlewild, Curse of the Golden Flower (can't friggin wait for this!), The Protector, Jet Li's Fearless, Lady Vengeance, Three Times, Notes on a Scandal, and The Last King of Scotland!! At the school where I work part-time, a teacher told me "there's nothing good anymore at the movies. The last movie I saw in the theater was The Godfather Part I. I don't bother with the junk that comes out now". It took everything in me not to punch him, or at least laugh in his burned-out face. The movies will always be there...bringing light to the darkness, and bringing joy to all of us, and some bitter old killjoy can NEVER take that away. Its been a hell of a year, bring on 2007!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and thanks AICN!

After all that, I think I'll add my list of movies for anyone who cares. These are SPECIFICALLY... movies that I saw here in Canada in 2006 either in the theatres or on DVD. 10.) Snakes on a Plane. Since we're talking about enjoyable movie experiences, the audience I was in had a love affair with this movie the night I saw it. Not a great flick in and of itself, but a fun-tastic time was had by all. 9.) Taladega Nights. Like Snakes on a Plane, I just had a great time watching this movie. I enjoyed Will Farrell in this, the same way I enjoyed him in Anchorman. And the scene where he stabs himself with the knife had me in tears of laughter. 8.)Night at the Museum. This should probably be lower on my list, but it was the last movie I saw in '06, so it's the freshest in my memory. It's an enjoyable family movie with some very humorous moments. 7.)Lucky Number Slevin (DVD). Kinda figured out the plot well before it happened, but c'mon. Morgan Freeman and Sir Ben Kingsley in the same room playing mob bosses? Worth the cost of the rental alone. 6.)The Departed. One of the better movies to come out in '06, but far from my favorite Scorsese picture. Jack was way too over the top for the rest of the cast, and the ending seemed a bit weak to me... Imagine William Hurt's crime boss from History of Violence in Jack's role. I think it would have been a much better movie. 5.) V for Vendetta. Great performances by all. Slick, intriguing. Enjoyable. I got my money's worth. 4.) PotC: Dead Man's Chest. The Empire Strike's Back of the PotC movies. I'm hoping that pygmies don't help stop the East India Trading Company in World's End though. This was the only movie I saw in the theatres twice last year. 3.)Casino Royale. Wow. Daniel Craig really impressed me. Not since Goldeneye, have I been so drawn in to a Bond film. And I am greatly looking forward to the next one. 2.) The Prestiege. Only saw it once (because the theatre is kind of hard for me to get to.) It was my must-see movie of '06 and it didn't disappoint me in the least. Flawless execution of an intriguing story. I'm gonna buy this movie and watch it over and over and over again. 1.) is a cheat. It was released in '05, but I didn't see it until the summer of '06 on DVD. Brick. After seeing this movie I have tried to get as many others to watch it as well, just so we can all talk about it. Fantastic writing and dialogue. Cool characters. Great performances and clever directing all culminate to make it my favorite movie of 2006. discuss?

X-Men 3 and Superman Returns. X-M 3 was just a waste of good characters for a poor plot line. The Angel FX were not nearly enough to raise the level of enjoyment of this movie for me... But Kelsey Grammer as Beast was definitely good casting... And fire who ever designed Juggernaut's costume. Superman Returns was the King Kong of '06. Too much money thrown at a director who let his own personal agenda get in the way of making a better movie. (King Kong should be pared back, not extended btw Mr. Jackson, if you're listening). Bryan Singer... You do not get Superman. You do not understand who the character is. You do not know what to do with him to make him the iconic hero that he SHOULD be. You have severly hurt the character at this point, because you have made your story canon among the Superman mythos. Superman is the world's greatest hero, not because he is faster than a speeding bullet, or more powerful than a locomotive. Not because he can 'turn the world backwards by flying around it backwards really really fast'. He is the greatest superhero because he ALWAYS MAKES THE RIGHT CHOICES. He knows right from wrong, and it would have been wrong for him to have sex with an 18 year old girl, get her knocked up and then leave the planet for 5 or 6 years. It would be wrong for him to spy on her after coming back. It would be wrong (and creepy) for him to sneak in to her house and watch her kid sleeping. Bryan, you were wrong for making this movie. Instead of making a new beginning a la Batman Begins, so that the two movies might progress equally towards a World's Finest. But, you've gone and ruined it. By putting an unwelcome child into the story. It makes me sad.

Where would V have placed in the 2006 list, and what movies from 2006 would have made the list had the usurpers from 07 been there? Is this list a slight on United 93, or would that have made the list otherwise? By opening it up to randomly selected films from other years it becomes impossible to tell.

That being said. I haven't seen Apocalypto yet and I am sure as fuck glad you ruined any moment of worry I would have for the characters, now knowing that the main character lives. You are a fucking joke. Good list btw. And you are right, Black Snake Moan should have been released at the end of this year so that it can be up for a nod. The blood and gore isn't too bad. Especially with the violence surrounding the war in Spain. The fantasy violence isn't bad either. However, there is one scene in the movie that includes a small knife and a man's mouth....that one is fun...other than that. Nothing is too bad... Definately watch it.

K, the scene works for two reasons. The 1st comment that how can you not know that you are color blind until then? One, color blindness does occur later in life and is not always born with. Also (a reason they have those pamphlets in hospitals) some people go for a long time not realizing they can't see a certain shade of color because they never really knew it was gone in the first place. As you should know, color blindness isn't the abscence of all color but more one particular spectrum of light and most times it is either shade of red or green. However, other shades of these colors can be seen and therefore, you never know that you couldn't see some colors.....Anyways, its totally believable that this 15 year old just discovered that he was color blind and yeah, Carrell's immediate response about flight school was legit due to the fact he KNEW this kid was taking a silent oath until he made it to flight school and that this would jeopardize that chance. So dumbasses, its not lazy writing...it worked.

I saw "Children of Men" last night and I have to say, it was quite impressive. A little one-track-mind but it was riveting. YackBacker is right: there are a few tracking shots that are unbelievable. The coordination for the finished shots must have been a massive undertaking. "V for Vendetta" was...capable. One of the more overrated movies of the past couple of years IMHO. Much like "Crash", I felt like I was being hit over the head with an abundance of obvious political dogma.

Pan's labyrinth suffered because it is not really a family film and Del toro does not relent from showing the viewer the brutality of Lope'z guard or Franco's spain. It is a film of fantastical fantasty and harsh brutality. in an unrelated matter the FBI have announced that in the summer they will start fingerprinting british people who are travelling to the US. Department of Homeland Security said that it had to do with criminality. So the FBI and the US govt thinks the brits are crminals eh? well done george you have just torpedoed the not-so-special relationship.

Jerkmeister, you wrote something that made me laugh. Directed at Harry, you wrote: "You suck so much dick it's unbelievable." This implies that there is a believable amount of dick you think that Harry sucks. You seem to be saying that you would not be surprised in the slightest if you were given a very credible accounting of Harry slurping away on some dude's junk. However, you also seem to be telling us that there is some number of dicks that, if you were to hear it -- and again from some credible source -- you'd slap your forehead and go, "Wait! No way! I knew Harry was a cock-sucker, but JESUS! How is that even POSSIBLE?!" I don't know... the whole thing was pretty funny to me. Sorry for sharing....

Friends with Money...is there a more underrated director out there right now than Nicole Holofcener? She makes these perfectly flawed little slices of life that critics tend to shrug off cause they don't make statements, just observations.

If Children of Men does comment on immigration, then let me guess; its to say that anyone who opposes unending amounts of mass immigration from the 3rd world into the West is some sort of awful xenophobic bigot. Let me guess; it has lots of brown people being oppressed by lots of white people. Am I right? As to Superman Returns; Routh was excellent as Superman, the shuttle/plane rescue was one of the best action sequences I've ever seen in a movie, but otherwise it was a letdown. Picking up vaguely after Superman 2 (which sucks for the most part), left too many plot holes. They should have just started over like they did with the excellent Batman Begins.
