Hrm, not sure what to make of this news. I mean, it's not like the first movie is exactly "fresh" in everyone's heads, right? It's becoming commonplace to "go back to the well" for stars who want to resurrect their career, such as Stallone, Willis, and now Kilmer. I'd rather see him in "The Doors 2" than a sequel to Real Genius. I mean, what plot could they POSSIBLY do?? They gonna get the fella that lived in the closet again? Y'know, the dude from "The Pretender"?

Not too keen on this idea. I loved the first one - I was like maybe 13 or or so. This is the flick that made me want to study and showed me geeks, dorks, and nerds were actually cooler then the jocks. I myself am a swimmer but .... I went to college and craved pussy, thus, changed - started giving swirlies to every "study abroad bitch from Asia" that I could. of course I kid. How else could I pass chemistry?

I love the film as well, but the idea of a sequel scares me. Also I think Gabe Jarret who played Mitch is actually teaching Physics at some University, I think it was him. They talked about him on VH1s top 100 child stars. Val Kilmer looked like he was having fun in Top Secret and Real Genius, so it would be good to see him have fun again. Though I don't know about the sequel.

Top Secret is awesome. Better Off Dead is awesome. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang was pretty good, although few actors can do genuinely "talkative" dialogue and Downey's voiceover failed to nail it. Didn't like One Crazy Summer, though. I haven't seen Real Genius. It seemed to have a cult appeal and I was hoping for a Special Edition. Everyone seems to like it, though, I might have to get it.

They start off great, very funny, very compelling....then they just go no where. They have a first and second act, then the 3rd act is slapped on in a half-assed way with a pretty anti-climatic ending. I mean, come on, the big popcorn popping scene was ok, but didn't it seem that everything was kinda just rushed right through starting with the B-1 break-in to the very end when Lazlo came driving up in his prize-van? This works perfectly because you don't have to see the original to see a new one. Just have Chris Knight getting hired to serve as a professor at the same college. Of course, dickhead would still be working there or maybe he's doing something else. Chris first dives down into Laszo's ole digs and decides he is going to live there instead of paying rent. Why? He owes his ex child support or something and he doesn't want to spend any money that he doesn't have to. Of course, he then latches on to a new genius, with hopes of bucking the system, getting some $, and bettering the world... but maybe not in that order.

Decided he'd do a Johnny Depp, take a break from being a "serious" actor and spend some time doing silly shit for a paycheck? I'm not slagging the guy or anything. Truth is I've always thought he's a tremendous actor. Look at some of his roles in the 90's - the mofo played Doc Holiday, Jim Morrison, Elvis Presley and friggin' BATMAN all within a 5-year stretch. Who else (besides Gary Oldman, maybe) can boast a resume' like that?? I think Kilmer is fantastic, and if he DOES decide to take a page out of Depp's playbook to pay some bills, I certainly have no problem with it. BUT... Real Genius 2?? Come on, man. I love the movie as much as you guys seem to; in fact, hearing all the lines from the movie resurrected in this TB are bringing back some fond memories of the flick, big time. However, there's just no need for it. There's no call for it. Why bother? Why THIS project? Why must he make a sequel?? Especially for something that really just doesn't need one. I mean... a 23-year lag between the first and the second... it's worse than "untimely," it's flat-out embarrassing. Val, why not do something a bit better-suited to your intensity, like what Kiefer did with 24. Think about it - before 5 years ago, Kiefer Sutherland could hardly get hired for a hemorrhoid commercial. Now he's Mr. Golden Globes, Mr. Emmy-Awards. He's a huge fish in a somewhat smaller (and these days far more innovative) pond. And even if he does movies that go nowhere (ie, "The Sentinel,") people don't mind because they just can't wait for the next season of his show. So Val, make a mainstream flick if you want - make a few of them if you want to. You'd do well with them, I'm sure. Hell, Downey's playing Iron Man... us geeks are digging the hell out of that. But Real Genius 2? A big step back, IMO. Don't do that to yourself, man.

Whenever I see Lazlo it's funny because it was such a small role but I still immediately associate him with that closet. I loved him in The Big Empty. And that other kid looked really good last time I saw him. I think it was Apollo 13? I dunno, maybe it could work. But it would have to be serious wouldn't it? Maybe like all those scientists who've gone missing and in this case one of them, maybe Chris, went missing but instead of being murdered by The Man, it turns out to be something funny instead. ugh... after firmly sticking foot in mouth with movie trivia earlier (spike lee hasn't won a documentary oscar and I keep thinking he has) I am almost afraid to say that a direct sequel to real genius sounds like 10 pounds of shit in a 5 pound bag, but it really does. His sort of genius is really only endearing as a student messing with faculty. If you put him 20 years older... it'll just seem quasi-selfish-idealist like a mf'ing pirate captain living underground in atlas shrugged... like wouldn't his character only be endearing if he were working for greenpeace or some such big change organization? Once you position him in a station where we dont hate him for not doing something important with his "great power" (it came with great responsibility, right?) then the movie/sequel can't really stay a comedy can it? Once you have hope then you have a tragedy. As long as we are only concerned with hopelessness (students fighting teachers... ha ha ha) then its comedy. I think it could only possibly work if Kilmer were a teacher himself with a class of talented and gifted (not all states have that btw - just places famous for dumbasses like texas, florida, and california) and had to champion the needs of his students against administrators (there would be the hopelessness). The only other thing I can think of to insure comedic hopelessness is to put it in some jerkwater theocratic third world country at which point it doesn't even need to be a sequel, does it?

I was hot and I was hungry, ok? Love that fucking movie. And I'm glad Quint brought up Kiss Kiss Bang Bang because that movie kicked all sorts of ass. I do disagree, however, with the TBer who said that Downey's voiceover was done poorly (or something of that nature). His voiceover was done pretty well I thought, a surprise given how much I usually hate the device in general. Kudos to those who have mentioned Spies Like Us as well, which I think is more than a guilty pleasure; it's criminally underrated. I am a bit dismayed that we're discussing 80s comedies and the one that provided the inspiration for my TB name, Bill and Ted's, hasn't been mentioned yet. They should do another one of those. Betcha more people would see Keanu in that than in that weird time-traveling chick-flick with Bullock (Sandra, not Sherrif). San Dimas High School Football Rules!

I have a special affection for Real Genius for all of the reasons everybody is talking about here. I just can't see any reason to try to make a sequel at this point in the game except that Val Kilmer is going after the money. I think that Val Kilmer has always been an under achiever in terms of his career. I have that same feeling of Andy Garcia and Kevin Bacon. All have been dutifully employed and chugging out movies. All have had memorable roles. None have become 'A' hollywood material, but all have had the potential. I think a sequel to Real Genius would just be a vehicle for Val Kilmer to have a starring role again in a movie that would bring in bucks during week 1 at the theater.

I remember when this kind of comedy used to be smart-pretending-to-be-dumb, as opposed to the reverse which is what we get today. So if this is as smart and funny as the original, I'll be there! Val Kilmer is hilarious. Would be strange seeing an 80s-style comedy on the big screen, though, instead of video.

I have lost count of the amount of times I have seen it. I rented it out there on DvD. So that makes it about 9 or ten times. oh yeah... chica-chica chicahh. The 80's were I think, my favourite decade. The amount of films I saw back then was when I think about it enormous. I was a kid back then and I was born in the year ford became president. The only film that I would ever campaign for dvd release is that extraordinary Will Vinton Vid. Quest of the comet or Comet quest. Wow that film was a masterpiece. I also A lots of films in the 90's. I remember going to see Ace ventura with a school friend on a saturday and being nearly sick. I remember the weekend Resevoir dogs came out. We didnt tell our parents what film we were going to see and I remember waiting for ages for my friend to arrive. A whole group us in our final year went to Four weddding and went with my parents. The only time I have ever felt guilt over a movie was the time when Pulp fiction came, my mother and were going to see it. She told me to go in and get two tickets. As I did the dart came along and jumped on it. I got home and my mother was too happy. But she saw Pulp fiction and she enjoyed.

He played a werewolf in MS and a shape-shifting vampire/wolf in FN2 (like Dracula in Bram Stoker's Dracula). This may be the reason for some of the confusion. I'm still waiting for Teen Wolf 3. The plot is identical to part 1 (like "too" was) but this time it's Scott and Boof's daughter who becomes the wolf and kicks ass on the soccer field. There should be a new movie for each sport.

Dude, that's a good point...the early 80's were mostly "We're all gonne die!" movies, like WarGames and The Day After, but it seemed to lighten up after that, didn't it? Strange. The 70's were all about biological destruction (Andromeda Strain & Body Snatchers pods)...but the mid to late 80's were all pretty much light and fun with Atherton and Ronny Cox playing the bad guy.

I moved to DC about a year ago - from Dewey Beach Delaware (don't ask me why, it was the beach after all) and it is a pain in the ass to get to a Target or Walmart to get DVD's cheap BUT apparently Best Buy does the same - they keep the price on new releases cheap for the first week and then bumps them up. Keep the pay stub and take it back and find a Best Buy - ya got one day left to save man. I watched The Descent last night. Everyone seems to hate it but man, it holds up. Surround sound - you can hear the cave crawlers "clicking" away from the start. Good movie - not sure of why there all the hate. Real Genius was still as good as I remember - better be for $21!
