The last time I saw James brown was on the UK music hall of fame awards show last month and he was fucking amazing in that he was 71 and he could still dance but in a limited way. IN the 1980s and 1990s I had concert going phase. One of the acts I saw was james Brown. Wow. He really was the black elvis. Here is interesting fact. I always wondereed why during performances He would flash his hands. one of his band members said that if they missed a note during a gig he would fine them and the hand flash was his way of letting them know. He had been unwell for some time I gather and a couple of years ago he got cancer. I am not suprised. My grandmother was well into her 90s when she died and that was so sudden unlike my mother who got secondary and ultimatley terminal cancer. Still death when it happens is quick and rapid. The legacy he leaves behind will no doubt he mangled by the talentless new RNB crowd. God From someone who james brown, thank you sir.

Man, this sucks, but at least I got to see him play. He was pushing 70, and he'd obviously slowed down quite a bit, Yes, his personal life was hardly immaculate, but he was still the funkiest man in the world. My favourite story is that he was about his appearance on the T.A.M.I Show, a concert movie from the mid 60s, in which he so thoroughly wrecked the crowd that the Rolling Stones didn't want to follow him.

One of my true musical heroes is gone. "The CD of JB" was the very first compact disc I ever bought way back in 1985... and "Star Time" is the single greatest box set ever. For a "movie geek" touchstone of his work, some time today (if you own it) cue up Star Trek V. It's a godawful movie, but in the scene that Kirk is attacked by the "panther lady" in the desert planet bar... her screams are made up entirely of looped JB screams. Swear to Godfather.

I saw him live a couple times, he looked like some kind of bizarre alien when you really looked at him, and man he still HAD IT. I couldn't believe how he really could just yell out "SEVEN TIMES!" or "TWENTY-THREE TIMES!" and the band would hit it every time. They gotta be good at counting I guess. Or he would spin around and say "MOTHAPOPCORN!" or whatever song he just decided to do and they didn't have to think, it was like catching a ball. It was incredible. That story about fining his band members, I read that he used to do that but when he first started the JBs lineup with Bootsy and them, they thought of him as a funny old man so when he would flash the sign that they were fined they would just laugh, so he had to stop doing it. (Later MC Hammer pulled the same shit with his goofy dancing troupe.) Sad to see James go, I thought he had another 50 years in him. Funkiest man of all time... all the other funk legends, from George Clinton to Prince, were learning from James (or inheriting his band). Luckily his music will live on, and there's a whole hell of alot of it. RIP Godfather.

This being LA everyone just tried to pretend they didn't care that JAMES BROWN was eating near them. I just flat out stared. he had a great career and a good life, even with those ups and downs with the law. and a few coincidences upon this downer, dean martin passed away 12 years ago christmas day and that was also almost the same disease. and also, considering that eddie murphy's charector in dreamgirls is part james brown and his "hot tub" sketch on snl was one of the most memorable moments in the show's long run time. "i feel good!" my thoughts are with his family and friends this christmas.

I was reading a guitar magazine that had an interview with Ted Nugent. The subject of James Brown came up and Nugent said: "When I first heard him I knew that us white guys would have to have to work twice as hard just to be half as good as James Brown". The only comment that I will add to that is the debt that everyone in Hip Hop owes him is immeasurable. And in response to Slappy Jones's comment: He was certainly no saint. No one turns a blind eye to that. But right now we are just remembering him for his musical accomplishments.

and that includes The Beastie Boys! Two years ago in Glasgow, Scotland, James Brown came back to play a one night gig at The Carling Academy. He hadn't been in Scotland for about thirty years. I hadn't been lucky enough to get a ticket since they sold out almost immedietly, but I went along to the venue anyway and to my absolute amazement, Someone sold me a spare ticket they didn't need. The place was packed, I had managed to get a good spot right at the front maybe only 10 feet from the stage. When his band finally came on nearly 2 hours later, I thought the crowd might blow the roof off the place! We were not disappointed, He may not have been in his prime, but he could still show us glimpses of what it must have been like to have see him in the sixties. I remember thinking at the time how lucky I had been to get in at all and I never stopped telling my friends all about that gig. They were in awe... and I still am. Rest in Peace James.

at the Apollo theatre in NYC, sometime in the mid 80's. One of the greatest concert experiences of my life was to see the Godfather of Soul in person. We were all standing up most of the time. How could one sit down? When he stepped down stage to party with the audience, we were all in awe of the Godfather -- that HE was stepping off stage to dance with US! I love his music. I love what he did for music, pop culture and society. Yes, he had some rough times, but who doesn’t. I choose to look at his great lifetime achievements in music and culture. He was a brilliant innovator-- one of my top 10 music favorites. I've got many of his albums, and listen to 50 Golden Hits often. I'm saddened to have heard the news and my condolences to his family and loved ones. He's definitely one of my cultural influences and feel fortunate to be exposed to his groundbreaking music and performance. Rest in peace James- and God bless your Soul.

I was in the car with my nine-year-old nephew the other day when "I Got You" came on the radio. He asked "Who sings this song?" and I answered "The Godfather of Soul, kid." I then proceeded to sing along with some interesting dance moves. I'm so sorry to hear that he's gone. He was one in a million, despite all the tribulations of his life. RIP, Godfather.

..The most sampled musician ever - he could take a "Uuhhhh" and make it a lyric and a part of the beat at the same time. ..The only musician I know to inspire a techno song - actually called James Brown Is Dead, and then followed up with James Brown Is Still Alive - both from the early 90s and were at their time did amazing things for the techno genre. ..One of the great muso's of the 20th century. I think the reason I Got You (I Feel Good) is such a massive thing is because over the years its been used in movies (Good Morning Vietnam) and still gets air-play. It's like the President of Funk Songs - a great representative, and hopefully gets people wanting to listen to more. ..Someone who should be remembered for his contribution to the music world - for it wouldn't be the same without him.

i've Always been a big JB fan- i just burned a remix of prince's Kiss and JB's Sex Machine mashed up for my wife 2 days ago. also on the CD: JCs God's Gonna Cut You Down. nothing spookalicious about it though- those 2 guys are 2 of my heroes- having just made a film that deals with domestic violence (on christmas, no less), i've always been amazed at how James was adored worlwide not only by men, but by women as well- i'd like to hear back from more ladies about their love for James- and while we're on the subject of who he Was- wifebeater, etc- i'm sure you all read in the obit that he died 3 days after handing out toys as part of his annual giveaway- if you're gonna talk about his wifebeating, then don't forget his charities- he Never forgot where he came from and his love for the poor was Legend in the south.

To those of you ignorant enough to question why James Brown is being 'honored' with a talk back - just observe that the majority on this talk back have nothing but praise for the man and his music. There is a reason for that. It was genius, and it has had a long lasting effect on countless musicians and their music - some of which I would be willing to bet you even like. Yes, he was flawed - as are all human beings. And yes, there were circumstances and events in his life that were deplorable. But the good that he did, beyond making great music and entertaining millions. Beyond the cultural impact he had on not just black music but on the attitudes and music throughout this country. The greatness in what he achieved and how he achieved it. The sheer musical genius and power of the man, can not be disputed. And those of you too small minded to see that there is a larger world than just posting a whine about how your 'childhood is being raped by that abomination called the Transformers movie directed by the king of all hackitude.' Well, I feel sorry for you. Doing wrong stuff is one thing. I am not talking about the people with drug habits. But a fucking wife beater deserves nothing. Would you give the same blind eye to some working stiff who beats his wife and kids? Even if he donated to charity, went to church, helped others, etc. But at home he was an abusive prick? There are some things that trump being a good entertainer. You still have to be a decent human being. We all have faults but being a fucking wife beater, rapist, murderer kind of crosses that line.
