Frank Stallone! Still classic to this day but I can certainly see how it would become grating to the point where you tell ol' Norm to knock it off. Only the germans and Hassellhoff, deservedly so, got it worse than Frank. *** Anyways - again we all thank you again for your time and candor Mr. Stallone. You, sir, are truly a gentleman and a scholar.

Dear Sir, from Poland here, Just wanted to thank you so much for beeing such a great movie icon and a person that probably most of us would love to have a drink or two with, listening to all the stories you have. And thank you for still beeing THE GUY for us, not getting fat, not wearing fake hairs and indian culture inspierd clothes and making 5 movies a year direct to DVD like Steven Seagel decided to. You like no one others should get this bloody Oscar achivement award for what you did to all the guys who in 80's and then 90's where young boys and then teenagers and now a young men. There is nothing wrong in sentimentality and I fucking swear to god that there are no guys and I doubt there ever will be like you, Arnold and Willis in his finest days. You don't need the Oscar or critis applause to feel complete, you have our thanks. WE, YOUR FANS, SAYS THANK YOU! .. but don't leave, stay a little bit longer. All the best from Poland, Your Fan, Tom K.
Thank You

Thank you for taking the time to answer all the questions. I find it incredible that during all the hype, press junkets, interviews and very long days involved with launching a movie, that you had the time to reach out to the fans like this. You have done acquitted yourself quite nicely in this forum...thank you! P.S. My friend Phil, a huge Edgar Allan Poe fan, is intrigued by your project...good luck. And finally, my friend Kathy (a sexy minx of a redhead) who attended a screening of the original "Rocky" that you were at a few years ago in California, was flattered beyond belief when you gave her a good eyeball going over. Because of your obvious passion the film, I would have waited for DVD normally(even though im a fan, i waited for even Matrix 3 on DVD) but I will see this in the theater. Good luck Sly, reading these I see your obviously a very smart guy, very intelligent, and I wish you sucess, and I wouldnt say dont do Death Wish, do something BIG like Dark Knight Returns, I think older Stallone would be an AWESOME Dark Knight, bust just stay true to the comic. That would kick ass. Older, gruff, mean Batman. That would so kick ass. Good luck sly, ill be a part of your weekend box office :) Fernwick www.theidiottestament.com

I just got home from the movie, came straight here to report and saw that round 20 was up. And now I'm all verklempt. Thanks for doing this for us, Mr. Stallone, you don't know how much it means. And the movie is the same way. It's an amazingly perfect nod to the fans and I definitely appreciate it. I got one of those crying headaches at the end but I love it. I think I'll go back either tomorrow or Friday. The theater was more full than normal and it was mostly 25-55 age range, which is different because it's usually all old folks. I think I brought one of the only ones and I almost regretted it when she started talking to the screen during the fight but (spoilers) when Rocky got in that last punch I started clapping and almost jumped out of my seat. :D My only problem is that I haven't seen too much of an Oscar campaign. So let's get on it. I'm off to the IMDb to vote 10 and write my comment. And that 10 is absolutely deserved. You done good.

DEATHWISH as a spingboard
by I Own You
Dec 20th, 2006
03:38:45 PM
I know I was supposed to respond to this in the last TalkBack, but since Mr. Stallone brought it up here, I wanted to add two cents. The cop route has been overdone, what a 'Deathwish'-type character needs is to be the polar opposite of the killers. That is, a pacifist with a deep agenda in the environment and preservation. That way, as he (or she) makes their descent into the personal circles of hell, we see how their hatred towards those who have 'done them wrong' can strip away the best of intentions. In the final act, when faced with the enemy, they would then come to understand how far they fell from grace as they see that they became what they first hated. Everyone lives with the best of intentions, but in emotional and survival situations, we are reduced to basic animal instincts. How would an intellectual person deal with their anger once it was spent? Taht would be an interesting story. Just a thought.
Thanks a lot, Sly!

Mr. Stallone, thanks again for all your insight, wit, and charm. These Q&As have been such a treat and have set a highwater mark for AICN (nice job Harry & Co.).

These TalkBacks can be a pretty mean and desolate place. To quote Star Wars: "You will never find a more retched hive of scum and villainy". But thanks to the Q&As, you've helped make them a more friendly place...just in time for the Holidays. Best of luck with "Rocky Balboa". And remember:

Best stuff on this site I think ever, and a template for what could become a great future series of events using other actors. Frankly my estimation of Mr Stallone has risen daily, and he has carried himself with great dignity and humor. Basically it takes someone of great courage to open themselves as he has done and come out the other side seeming like a decent human being. I really would love a rematch, or a similar round of questions to some of our other favourite genre actors/directors, let's see who's brave enough to take the challenge :)

Thanks to AICN for making it possible and thanks to you, Mr. Stallone, for taking the time and making this an excellent experience for all involved. These Q&A sessions seem to have been beneficial to EVERYONE involved. I've so looked forward to getting home from work at night, sitting down, lighting up, and reading these things. They've made me remember what Mr. Stallone meant to me as a kid in the 80's. Although, I have to admit the image of Mr. Stallone playing with Rocky and Rambo action figures is one for the books.

by Rain505
Dec 20th, 2006

If Harry is understandably exhausted from this experience, it may be wiser for an actor or filmmaker to give Harry 3 – 6 months advance notice and for readers to allow Harry 2 full months to go through submiited questions, before listing the best ones.

this whole experience has been a pleasure. I didn't get my question answered, but it has been fantastic reading sly's answers day after day. I feel bad/guilty that all these years I saw sly as more of a muscle bound one note action star. What I have learned is that sly is perhaps one of the most down to earth, well spoken, and intellegent people that hollywood has to offer. I think a dream come true would be a chance to share a night of drinks with sly and pick his brain over some beers, after this Q&A I know that an experience like that would be rewarding, as well as insightful, and inspiring. You truly are a Class act mr. stallone!!!

i think that's what you meant vergard...as when godfather 1&2 were re-edited into each other...i was thinking the same thing, that would be fairly rad for rocky. nice to show the true arc of the character. i'd also like to point out the eyebrow-raising moment where stallone said he'd read through all the 'deathwish' commentary and has decided to pass on the project. WOW. that was kind of amazing. can you imagine if other powerful actors/directors/producers actually asked our opinions before embarking on potentially doomed projects? amazing. thank you again and rock on.

The theater was packed especially for a Wednesday (great sign)! Just saw one of the best sequels/movies/last chapters to a franchise I will ever see in my life! WOW...I honestly got teary eyed a few times. Sly's speech at the commission and the speech to his son was simply some powerful acting from Stallone...WOW! The audience loved it! There was a lot of laughing at the right moments as intended. I love the story-line with his son being in his shadow and I love the story and character build-up with Mason...this is such a poweful movie. This is gonna be a hit! I love the ending when the credits rolled...seeing this movie was just MAGIC. One guy at the end said "good bye ROCKY" when the credits ended...I'm sad to see him go! that was great and soo sad to see it end. I've been defending ROCKY BALBOA for the last 2 weeks to people who comment that it's going to be stupid or he's too old to play Rocky, and i haven't even seen it yet. And then the conversation turns to me telling them that Stallone is actually an intelligent, funny guy but they don't believe that either. For those of us that were lucky to read these, we know the real Stallone for what he is. Inquisitive, mature, and no holds barred funny. Thanks once again Sly!!

Mr. Stallone, that has to be, without a doubt one of the best pieces that I've read on this site for years. I don't want to come across as another brown noser, as I'm sure you meet those on a daily occurance, but my respect for you has grown ten fold. It seems to me that most of these "stars" seem to forget where they've came from and that they seem to forget that they have to breath the same air as the rest of us, it's this "better than you" mentality that has always put me of these individuals. Don't get me wrong, I've been an avid movie fan for most of my life, and to be able to escape from the normal humdrum of reality even for just a few hours and just enjoy the experience of being entertained with great film, I believe, is one of the greatest gifts ever. I hope what you've done here has opened up a new avenue for other heroes and heroines of the silver screen to follow your lead and show the rest of us, that at the end of the day, even though their names and faces are more well known than the average Joe of the street, they have the same fears, ideas and qualities like the rest of us. I wish you all the luck you deserve with your future projects, and will be happily waiting in the line with the rest of the fan-boys eager to know the next chapter in Rocky's life, and the same applies with Rambo. In closing, this q&a session has confirmed for me the person I think you are, and it only takes one word. Legend.

It has been great the last two weeks reading all your Q and A's. I grew up on the Rocky movies and always felt closely connected to them. I wasn't born when 1 came out but may parents raised me on Rocky. I was an athlete and I would work out to the training scences in Rocky. I am also a southpaw so I always felt as a kid that I could be Rocky. The movies are so special to me that I even named my yellow lab Rocky and my black lab Apollo. My 24th birthday is Friday. It only seems fitting that you would release Rocky Balboa on that week. Thanks so much for doing this, I can't wait to see the movie this Friday night.

It's been great hearing from Sly and find him as likeable as I always believed him to be. It is also great to find such a huge star to be so humble and appreciative of his fans.I cannot wait to see Rocky when its released in the UK, I hope you will attend the premier, maybe I'll get to see you in the flesh. I am also dying in anticipation for Rambo 4 I love all the movies but I hope the new one will return to the more realistic and dramatic ton e of first blood. I just wish Jerry Goldsmith were still here to write the score, I hope his theme is used and whoever is chosen as composer will do his work justice! Finally I hope my greatest wish will come true one day and that you and Arnold will make a movie together, I always break out in a big grin when I see my two greatest heroes together. Sly, once again: thank you for this amazing Q&A session. I went to see "Rocky Balboa" today with both of my folks and all of us loved it. Beyond the boxing and visceral excitement of the film, there is a profound depth of human emotion here...I was unprepared for how truly moving "Rocky Balboa" is. I honestly felt like you ripped your heart out and put it up there on the movie screen, and I can't thank you enough. There is a genuine sense of melancholy and loneliness to the movie, which is what I responded to the most...in the end, it's a positive and affirming piece of art as well. What a great film for the holiday season. Come back soon, Sly!

...Sly brings the goods to to the fans. When this started i was a big Rocky fan, i liked a lot of Stallones movies but i wasn't all that excited about the prospect of, what i thought was just a unique way of selling a movie. I WAS WRONG. Sly really engaged with this idea and honestly this was riveting reading from pillar to post. Sly, you have gone up exponentially in mine and im sure many other readers estimations. You will be revered in these talkbacks for a long time, and we will support you because you have put yourself out there for fans like no actor/writer before. These Q&A's have been a real holiday gift. Thanks Sly.

Ok let me get one in early for the Rambo IV Q&A. I would like to know what it was like to work with the late Ridhard Crenna (Col. Samuel Trautman) . In the series he always seemed the one person that John Rambo could depend on..almost like a father figure. How was your relationship off screen and do you have any interesting stories to tell. Also I saw Rocky B. today and it was amazing. I can't wait untill my son is old enough to understand them so I can enjoy them with him. Also Thanks again for all your insight..we wil all be counti9ng the days untill the next installment.

I wait with anticipation to see what Wednesday's figures will be for Balboa. I think I actually had a dream where it made $3M opening day. God, I hope I'm wrong. I hope this film clears $50M domestic. And it will be an absolute blast if it punches beyond that total. I see anything over $50M a victory for Stallone with this film, seeing as his recent run of flicks seemed to top out at $35M. Fingers crossed ...

Stallone doing a remake of Deathwish reminds me of what he did with Get Carter. Best to let that one slide. What I would recommend is doing something along the lines of his casting in Driven, where he plays a mentor figure. But I would use Anthony Hopkins in Zorro as a better indicator of what could be possible with such a role.

The best remake idea I've heard here is something I never thought possible - a Dirty Dozen remake, but with all the action stars of the 80s and 90s. I think that is a brilliant idea and would easily be a reboot for many a career. Stallone, Arnold, Willis, Van Damme, Segal, Norris, and current action people like The Rock, Vin Diesel and Johnny Knoxville. Even Wesley Snipes could use something like this right now. The realistic possibilities are endless with a project like this. Egos will clash, but if there was some way of channeling that energy into on-screen chemistry and rivalry (ala Tango & Cash), you could have yourself a modern day classic here. Wonder who owns the rights ... ?
Thank You Sly

Thank you for answering two of my questions, one as my name here, the other under a different one in Round 16 Q2. It was an honour and wonderful insight to have you answer my questions and thoughts. Thanks again for this inspiration of Rocky Balboa that I am already adapting as terrific motivation for me. As for Death Wish remake, honestly my own interpretation of a passive non violent character taking up the gun to avenge his family, parallels Hamlet all the way. The internal pain and orderal he goes through to slowly slowly make the difiicult task of converting to a violent way which he may not have previously believed in, and one that directly opposes his beliefs in the law. As he undertakes his offensive and bloody actions it is the cost of his spirit that causes him the greatest pain, as he falls from Grace with the Law and God, as he ultimately sells his soul to the Devil. The result of his need for revenge and the blood that it spills will in the end possibly cause him his own actual death, or at least the death of his inner self. That might be a predictable or obvious ending, so I might go one more profound and deeper, maybe ironic step, and have him continue his delve into darkness and Hell, and have him continune to penetrate the world of unpunished murderers, criminal, any kind of evil people, as he goes 'undercover' and disguises himself into this underworld as he joins such people, in order to flush them out as much as he can, before punishing them, wether it be handing them over to the law when he feels the law will provide such punishment, or taking matters into his own hands again, and killing them off or making them pay in other ways he feels suitable, say finding some unique way to make them emotionally pay (I'm thinking how Brad Pitt in Seven would suffer for the rest of his life kinda thing,) I dunno, I'm clutching at straws as I make these last bits up as I go along. If you decide to use this story, do try to pay me back with Chicks. My Top 5 at this moment are Megan Fox, Ellen Page, that PlanetSummer chick on the internet, Shania Twain, oh and the original line up of Atomic Kitten - but only when they first started out, anything after their first album they can sod off. Oh maybe a handful of Spermwhales, Otters and Chinchillas too while you're there, I reckon Megan Fox would be up for some of that too with me, hence her surname. Speaking of having loads of Chinchillas all over one's body, I don't want any Madonna nonsense though. I develop a nasty twitch in my left cheek whenever I think of leotards now - and then what happens between my cheeks - HOTDAMN!

Thanks Sly, for a great set of responses. Its been a real treat. Slightly off topic, but regarding the grand canyon, some factoids (in part because I just finished a single day hike into the bottom and back out last Thursday) 1) Read "Over the Edge" for some amusing and sobering tales of mishap (fatal and near fatal) in what we lovingly came to call "the butt crack of God" 2) The Park Rangers DO NOT recommend doing it in one day. Was I stupid? Probably not, but I was very well prepared both gear-wise and researched how to do it safely. This was also my second "attempt" 3) Elite athletes do not necessairly have an advantage. And Park Rangers and "Over the Edge" both caution not to get too overconfident just cause you can do a full marathon in an hour or so... :-) The official guide booklet for South Kaibab trail tells a sad story of a ultra-runner who died in 2004 in part because they didn't take enough water. 1 1/2 quarts and a few protien bars just don't cut it in the summer. 1 gallon per day per person, minimum. I had 1 1/2 gallons last week and it was only 30-50 degrees, and I still "ran out" before coming up the top of Bright Angel. Thankfully I also had water purification tablets and had refilled before the final ascent. 4) The shortest trail at the South Rim (at least near the main visitors center) is 7 miles to the bottom with no water and no shade along the way. Bright Angel is actually better, but is 9+ miles to the bottom, but has more shade and water in at least 1 location year round. (Other than the Colorado itself, of course). I recommend going down South Kaibab (shortest but steep) and coming up Bright Angel (longer but shallower in places and more shade/water availability mid-trail). As an aside, this was my second attempt to reach the bottom, and the key word is *ATTEMPT* You shouldn't start unless you have a mandatory turn around time, and your emotionally prepared to turn around when the clock hits that point no matter how close you are. Consevatively, 2 hours up for every hour going down should be a guide. Its kinda like summiting Everest, only for mere mortals. With common sense, the right gear (water, water, water) its reasonable risk. But it ain't no sunday hike in a local park. We saw somebody get air lifted out because even hiking DOWN 4 1/2 miles to Indian Springs was more than they could handle. And they hadn't even STARTED back up the steep parts yet. And for my money, Bryce Canyon is far prettier. Enjoy!

here in rainy Seattle. Will be checking it out again. Also, hopefully you'll reconsider thinking through the the "Deathwish" re-make, Mr. Stallone. Obviously there's something with that movie, some element of it that got you intrigued and thinking about it in the first place. Maybe find out what that "something" is and build on that instead of considering a full on re-make. Congrats on the new movie, as well! Everyone in the theatre seemed to really enjoy it and it got plenty of clapping at the end.

Hey Sly- I was the one that brought up "Collateral" and talked about how it might be hard to establish the character as a "good cop", since I think we can all see a cop taking the law into his own hands. I said that switching the character's occupation would eliminate the need for that kind of exposition, etc. ANYWAY- I just wanted to tell you that if you love this project, do it. We moviegoers can really see the passion and love that goes into a movie and if you are feeling that, do it.

What a finale!!! And to top it all off, Sly consulted us on Death Wish and changed his mind. Unfortunately, this will now be a 'what could have been project' that we will talk about and think about. I guess I would encourage Stallone to get with his buddies, Arnold and Bruce and try to find a way to make an ensamble action film of high quality happen and make our wet dreams come true. Don't cheese out on the director or writer. Make a quality product. If it's Inglorious Bastards, I'm all there. Thank you Stallone!!! I hope Rocky exceeds your expectations at the box office.
Slyvester = Good Humanbeing; Deathwish/Next Project

This Q & A showed me, without sounding too sentimental, that you are truly a good humanbeing that deserves great respect whether you are a moviestar or a man who cleans toilets for a living (btw, nothing wrong with that) because of your strong character. Regarding Deathwish, it sounds like it would depend on the details (e.g. script, budget, etc.). I would be very very very careful about choosing your next project with your new clout, which as you know can change very quickly. Particularly because your offscreen persona is so strong and dominating that you would have to be careful not to choose a character that is overshadowed by this but rather reinforced by it (e.g. Rocky at age 60 making a comeback in Rocky Balboa). I would not rush into anything because the same people who encourage this will be the same people who won't take your calls again and ridicule you if the movie flops. I also would consider bowing out as an actor while I am still on top and continue a career as a director and producer. I think you have an extremely rare opportunity with Rocky Balboa to bow out in style as an actor, and I would be selfish and dishonest if I did not recommend you seriously consider this. It is a great option to have. I have never posted on the boards but signed up just to post this because it was important to me to give you my two cents.

Dear Mr. Stallone, First, let me take you back 30 years, when a short, skinny Italian kid saw Rocky and had his life changed. “Inspirational” is not a strong enough word to describe how your movie affected me. Whenever a new Rocky movie came out it was time to go to “church” and worship at the altar of Balboa on opening night. Time and again I left the movie theater totally uplifted and wanted to run home. You never let me down. Until Rocky V. It started out great with the scene in the post-Drago fight locker room when Rocky’s hands were shaking uncontrollably. And then it all unraveled. Just as “inspirational” was not strong enough to describe my feelings about Rocky, “crushed” and “devastated” are not strong enough to describe how I felt leaving the theater after Rocky V. Instead of wanting to run home, I wanted to run in front of a bus. You had done the unthinkable and unforgivable…you had ruined the Rocky legacy. I have never watched that movie again and I never will. Three years ago a press release came out stating that you were writing Rocky VI. I was so disillusioned, the bad taste of Rocky V still so strong in my mouth, that I was driven to create the animation “Die Or Retire” (sung to “Eye Of The Tiger”). Apparently a lot of other Rocky fans felt the same way because it took off across the web. If you haven’t seen it you can check it out here: http://www.spoil-sports.com/Ro ckyVI.htm I read the Rocky VI script excerpts in SLY magazine and my interest was piqued. I saw the trailer and liked the tone of the movie. Rocky V notwithstanding, this is opening day for Rocky Balboa so it was time to go to church. I just got back and felt compelled to write this while the feelings were still fresh. Simply put: YO, SLY….YOU DID IT!!!! You redeemed yourself and Rocky with a sweet, heartfelt movie. What a poignant ending to, in my opinion, the greatest saga in the history of cinema. Thank you so much for taking your time to make sure you got it right. Thank you for returning to the essence of the Rocky character. Thank you for restoring the feeling I had leaving the theater for the first 4 Rocky movies. If I ever get the privilege of meeting you, expect a hug. Sincerely, Dominic Nunziato nunz@spoil-sports.com

And a 79 in the cream of the crop section. Take the 1 out of 4 asshole critics who you KNOW just couldn't get over their predisposition to hate this film and I'd say he's really at 100 percent. What's more, most of them freely admit they went in wanting to dislike this film and laugh at it and that it just plain won them over. One thing that sucks for Sly though and I found this critic to be an incredible dick - the Philadelphia Weekly's critic says, "Ashamed to admit it almost works." Either he's ashamed cause he wanted it to work or he's ashamed to admit that he may have actually enjoyed it meaning he wanted it to be terrible. I'm inclined to believe the latter. And when you go read his review, as well as MOST of the 'bad' reviews, they actually sound like good reviews that they somehow couldn't finish off by admitting the film is good. The worst review, by far, is in my native New Jersey's newspaper the Star Ledger, where that prick motherfucker Stephen Witty, whose last name is an oxymoron in the context of to whom the name refers, did a 'clever' review where he made it sound like he's a commentator at ringside in regards to the film and Sly's career. The guy is a fucking bottom feeder of a critic who hates EVERYTHING. Then again, what else would I expect of a New Jersey critic? Anyway, I really hope the film does well as Stallone has clearly shown here that he wears his heart on his sleeve almost in spite of himself.

Some thoughts about Rocky after having seen RB
by Doc_Strange

10:00:59 PM
I absolutely loved the last film. It was a great performance put in by Sly and the rest of the cast. Truly this film is up there with the first and even the camera work and even dialogue is evocative of the first Rocky. I really liked how a lot of the original characters were brought back. It was cool seeing Spider Rico have a part as well. The only thing I missed was Eye of the Tiger but that probably would have been cheesy to hear it at the end. After years of enjoying these movies I have to say that Rocky, to me, is truly a role model for what a man should be: He loves his wife and son, he's a good family man who provides through thick and thin, and he never lets anything get in the way of his goals. Guys like this don't really exist anymore and it's great that Mr. Stallone shows us that even today in our world, there should be guys like Rocky who are a positive entity in the face of great negativity. I have tried to position my life like this, though there have been some missteps here and there, I try to live with the lessons that these films have taught and continue to teach. I just want to thank Mr. Stallone for bringing these characters back one more time for a very worthy sendoff. Thanks for all the memories Sly.

Just got back from the theater. Saw it in the heart of South Philly with a bunch of my gavone friends. I just have to say that Mr. Stallone has solidified my pussification. I weeped like a teenage Swedish girl at an Yngwie Malmsteen concert. Just as moving, and sad, and hard, and ultimately uplifting as the original. Can't wait to see it again. I originally had very modest expectations for its box office potential, but after what I saw tonight I think (and hope) it's gonna be huge. Just got back from the movie with my hubby and 12 yr old nephew and it was AWESOME! You really did justice to the character of Rocky and you should be extremely proud of the end result. I've been a fan since I was a little girl and my husband (who's just had to accept it!) was as equally moved as I was. Great job, Sly and we're looking forward to seeing John Rambo again too. Thanks again for bringing such a kind hearted, decent man with actual MORALS to the screen and into my life. Take care and Love ya!!! Joy

the most negative horriable disguisting review I've found was in the AP wire--can't wait to see it going with my 17 y/o brother who loves Rocky..we can't even let him go to the video store alone because we know he'll come home with either 1, 2 or 4 in hand (along with whatever we sent him for) can't wait!
Thanks Sly!

Sly, Rocky Balboa was great. Just flat out terrific. I appreciate you taking the time to do these Q&As. It's awesome to see a celeb actually care about the people that are going to see their films. I really hope other stars take the time to do these Q&A sessions. I'll be honest with you. When I first heard about Rocky Balboa and Rambo, I had huge doubts like a lot of people. After seeing Rocky Balboa and reading your answers, it is very apparant that this was not as much about money as what people think. You are genuine and really care about Rocky. I am now 100% behind you with Rambo. Good luck with it.

Put these together with the next set, expand on all the answers, and sell it as a book. This seems like it has been very successful, so I am sure that they will end up doing it with more stars, but you have to be careful who is invited, most people won't be as open and honest as Sly was, thus a lot less interesting. I want to thank Sly for doing this, it shows me that even someone that has achieved so much in this industry still wants people to watch and relate to his work, some people just get paid to do a job and could care less what happens next. The Untimely Death of DEATHWISH

Mr. Stallone said: "P.S. I do read all of your talkbacks and thank you for your opinions on DEATH WISH. I think the majority of you are right, and I will not pursue the project any longer. Rest in Peace, Charlie…." See, this is the reason that, for all the great things that come out of celebrity-public interactions like this, there's always a sneaking suspicion in the back of my mind that, at the end of the day, it just ain't worth it. Don't get me wrong: I loved the fact that Mr. Stallone so generously, honestly and completely dedicated himself to answering his fans' questions and opening up to them about his dreams, experiences and feelings. This has been one of the most remarkable give-and-takes I've seen in ten years of visiting this site and similar Web entities, devoid of the inflated egotism, b.s. rhetoric and exaggerated hyperbole that typify most Hollywood-fan base interactions. Mr. Stallone is to be commended -- praised -- for his willingness to show us the inside of his mind, "warts and all," and share the bounty of his unique experiences as struggling artist, eager contributor, successful filmmaker and, ultimately, Hollywood icon. But... in tossing up the question, "Should I or shouldn't I?" to his fans, he's kind of belying his own legacy. Mr. Stallone, even your most informed, practical, worldly-wise fans can't legitimately answer your question, of whether a "DEATHWISH" reboot is a good idea. Who among us would have supported "Rocky Balboa," had you asked us the very same question three years ago? The honest answer: NO ONE. Yet, here we are, reading a veritable mountain of critical praise and listening to once-cynical insiders bandying "Stallone" and "Oscar" about in the same sentences (and they're not talking about your 1991 gangster comedy with Chazz Palminteri). Did you receive unanimous support for the original "Rocky," for that matter? It sounds absurd for me to be saying this to a guy who basically inaugurated not one, but TWO modern cinema genres -- the underdog flick, and the action movie -- whose pedigree as a writer, actor and producer is firmly established, whose films have grossed over a billion dollars at the box office, who stands as one of the top five box office draws of the recently concluded Century -- but, Mr. Stallone, if you have an idea, a vision, a dream, to hell with what even the most well-intentioned naysayers say. Follow your muse. If you want to remake "DEATHWISH," go right ahead. None of us here, not even collectively, knows better than you do, or at least, not necessarily. Most of the folks here, good people and adoring fans though they are, would have, gasping, rolled out of their chairs had you pitched "Rocky Balboa" to them just a few short months ago. So, to paraphrase William Goldman -- another screenwriter not entirely devoid of talent, instincts, and moxie -- no one knows nothin'. Forget the crowd, even one so supportive as this. Go on, dream big. Strike out on your own and create on your own terms. Don't give up, don't take no for an answer. Or, as Mick would say: "[S]tand up and fight... Like you done before -- that was beautiful! ... I think you're a hell of a lot more -- A hell of a lot! ...[I]f you wanna blow this thing, if you wanna blow it, then, damn it, I'm gonna blow it with ya. If you wanna stay here, I'll stay with ya. I'll stay with ya. I'll stay and pray." What do you got to lose?

Mr. Stallone, if you're reading this, I want to thank you for a magical journey. How often can a movie make you laugh, cry and pump your fists? I couldn't take my eyes off of this movie. But let's get to a mini-review-- First, the film looks fantastic, with beautiful photography and intimate camera work. Second, the characters are textured and real. Rocky wears his heart on his sleeve, and his pain is immediately exposed. And what I appreciated about that emotional window was that it wasn't overdone. I thought to myself how great it was that you didn't have a flashback showing Adrian's death or something conventional like that. It wasn't necessary because anyone that knows this character knows that his world went black when she left this Earth. His journey, retracing their steps together got me choked up immediately. And Burt Young's face when he walks off at the ice rink is burned into my memory. Anyone that's lost a loved one understands how that feeling can suffocate a person's heart. And Rocky says it at the meatpacking house, how he feels like he can't breathe sometimes. That's not melodrama, that's reality. And Rocky's speeches to both the boxing commission and his son outside the restaurant are not Hollywood-inspirational bullshit, that's a man showing his pain and bearing his heart for all to see. I loved the little character moments that you sprinkled throughout- Rocky doing a few futile pullups outside his hosue in the beginning, Rocky at the markets with those awful looking glasses that only a man who doesn't give a shit what people think would wear, and I really appreciated the way you handled his relationship with "Little Marie." These are adults, not horny kids looking to lose themselves in a few moments of passion. These are people who have been beaten up but still make a life for their kids. I loved Punchy, and again, I appreciated that you didn't delve into conventional movie-dog behavior like a comedic groan from the dog, or even better, that you didn't chase that old-ass dog around like a chicken from the first movie. For me, the movie satisfied the most when Rocky talked to Marie. Your acting in those scenes was flawless. The old, playful Rocky is still there, still cracking stupid jokes and being a goofy, warm and generous man. And most of all, this story had a real purpose. Sequels are generally retreads. You put this character through a new phase, setting him free as you say above. And setting him free has set us who love Rocky free as well. This movie elevates my love of the others in the series. I know that Rocky is alive and well again, and that he still has the fight in him. Yes, I will miss The Italian Stallion, but man was it sweet to see him again. Sly, thank you. And God Bless.
I just saw the movie and wanted to say thank you....

I think the events Rocky went throughout the movie mirrored what was going on in the audience. As Rocky went to places he spent with Adrian, mentally I went back to days I used to watch the old movies and where in life I used to be at the time. The nostalgia just came over the audience and couldn't help but cheer Rocky on. I went earlier today to see it but it was sold out. The theater made the mistake of putting Rocky in the small theater. I think that's going to be "corrected" tomorrow. One other thing I noticed was that the audience was very diverse. At the end everyone clapped and that doesn't happen where I live.
Thank you sly

MR. STALLONE... A REVIEW TO SHARE
by moto
Dec 20th, 2006
11:42:20 PM
Sly, after watching the movie today, it wouldn't be right not to share this review that was written and posted on another site. Sums it all up. Great flick!! To TBers, sorry for this long post... oh well. ****************** Let me start by clearing up some possible misconceptions that people might have about Sylvester Stallone's "Rocky Balboa", and the surprising "buzz" that the film has garnered thus far. The experience of this film is not driven by nostalgia. Nor is it driven by the theater experience of sitting among hundreds of fans chanting "Rocky! Rocky! Rocky!" Granted, these elements do enhance the experience of this film. Very much so. But the center drive of "Rocky Balboa", the sixth and yes final chapter in the Rocky franchise, is character. This wonderful and surprising film, clearly the dark horse of the year, is an exploration of Rocky. The man, the myth, and the legacy. It is easy to also say that the film follows the journey of its director and star as well. Stallone has managed to take what could have been a cliche ridden by-the-numbers sequel, and instead offered a poignant character piece of an American icon. This is indeed the TRUE companion piece to the original "Rocky", shot at an ultra-low budget (at least in today's terms) of $25 million. It is a film that offers an homage to all the things we loved about the Rocky movies, but in an artistic manner, never exploiting the characters and situations that Stallone created thirty years ago. But above that, as the center of the film, lies Rocky, not the boxer but the man. The story is an exploration of the human heart, spirit, and inspiration. A mantra that if only we could all have the guts to live by. Yes, it's clear we'll have our beloved training montage and climactic battle of the fists lead by Bill Conti's iconic and inspiring score. That's a given and I'll get to that later. But what matters most is the way Stallone has explored the character of Rocky, as well as those around him. His torment due to the loss of his beloved wife Adrian. The competive fire that still burns deep within him. The troubled relationship with his son that forces him to fill the void by befriending a person from his past as well as her son. Some might complain about the "slow pacing" of the first hour. It's called story, people. Something sorely missing in today's version of cinema. To put it plainly, "Rocky Balboa" is inspiration. The film will tug at your heart, fill your eyes with tears, and yes, make you cheer. Stallone manages to offer a compelling direction as well, stylistic in tone and pacing. Even the final fight is wonderfully edited, offering a slightly different take than previous sequels. The fight isn't just a fight, it's a battle within Rocky. That is the prime reason why the "villian" of the film may appear "faceless" compared to the likes of Drago, Apollo Creed, etc. Why? Because it's not about Rocky's latest nemesis, as the other films were. His nemesis lies deep within himself and Stallone caters to that, and perfectly so. So yes, "Rocky Balboa" does deliver. That is to be expected. Thankfully Stallone goes beyond that and offers a character piece that should put him right back on the map in the film industry. He proves to be a skilled story teller, as well as a talented director. The only thing stopping Stallone from proving that is the lack of projects other than a Rocky picture, which I'm sure will change in due time. And beyond his direction, something has to be said for his performance. Wow. Nothing better than the scene where he is speaking with Paulie in the meat factory and at the mention of Adrian, we see range long forgetten in a Stallone performance. Pure emotion. "Rocky Balboa" is a film that echoes what cinema was thirty years ago. Character first and box office numbers crunching last. My personal experience in the theater was not what everyone else is talking about. The theater wasn't full (perhaps because I went early in the day). It wasn't the rock concert that many of the premieres and screenings have proven to be. However, when the film begin and as I looked around, I was amazed to find the many different demographics mixed together. There were couples, fathers and sons, college buddies, high school buddies, mothers and their young children, elderly, etc. But what touched me most was the little twelve-year-old boy sitting in the row ahead of me... alone. Before the movie started, I was wondering, "What the hell is this little kid doing in here alone? He was a toddler when the last Rocky movie debuted!" I kept waiting for his father to show up, but he never did. Throughout the movie, I was amazed to see this wide-eyed kid reacting to each and every emotional and physical beat. He would dodge punches and throw up his arms when Rocky made a move. He'd pump his fists during the training montage. It was clear that despite his young age, he was a Rocky fanatic. It reminded me of myself, and perhaps most of you out there with that love for not only this character, but for film itself. I was sad because I wish my son could enjoy the experience with me, but at the age of sixteen months, he may be a bit too young:) I'm not shy to say that Stallone has brought back some of that magic long forgotten in these dark rooms, sitting in front of that gigantic screen. And it wasn't just because he used the Rocky tools of the music, training montage, fight scenes, etc. It was because he brought character back to the forefront of the screen. And for that, we thank you Mr. Stallone.
Thank You!

I think Mr. Stallone was pondering doing the remake, but just threw it out there to get us involved. He really is a people person....he's able to interact with everyone without directly talking to them!
So he threw out the question, got everyone involved, and when most people didnt like the cop angle....he just agreed with them. (Of course this just me randomly speculating). Thats like...genious....making people feel connected without even having a coversation. SLy rules!!

--My Rocky Balboa Sorta Review--
by GibsonUSA Returns

"Sorta" cause I'm not going to talk like a critic.....I'm going to talk like a person talking to my friends. I saw this movie this morning....first showing.
Okay, here's what I thought of Rocky Balboa. In one word: GREAT. In fact this is the first movie I was excited about this year that actually lived up to expectations! Whenever I go into a movie I am really excited about, I get a little nervous that it will suck. So as the title screen appears, I'm thinking "Please don't suck! Please don't suck!..." cause I want it so much to be good. With Rocky Balboa that worry was forgotten quickly and I was soon immersed into the movie.

This movie fixed two little bugs that have bothered me, and that was 1.) How I lost the Rocky character I loved from Rocky I-II. The Rocky in Rocky IV was someone completely different. And 2.) Whatever happened to Rocky's turtles?? :) Yeah, thoughout these Q&A rounds I think I asked about two or three times where his turtles went, I missed em!, and finally it was answered here! Whew! But back to Rocky, it was like seeing an old friend back. I didn't know who that guy was in Rocky IV, but this Rocky in Rocky Balboa is the friend I made from the original movie.

There's no doubt that this movie is going to be showered with praised so let me list some of the things I didn't like about it. First, it was too short. 1 hour and 42 minutes did not feel enough for these great characters! I had just gotten to know all the new/old people when the credits started rolling! Also, the Rocky/Rocky Jr. son relationship needed to be fleshed out MUCH more. For most of the movie Rocky Jr. is seething in frustration at his father and his situation....this anger builds and grows....then BOOM!! within' one minute it's resolved. That's too short! Maybe there will be a DVD Director's Cut that will be longer and let us get to know these new/old friends better. :)

Well that's about all the bad things I can say about the movie. It was incredible. I plan to go see it again. My friends and my dad haven't seen it yet and they all want to. I'd honestly give this movie an 8.5/10. I know this is the last one but I wish there could be more somehow! Maybe you could make a videogame sequel! A lot of directors/writers have been doing that recently.

Mr. Stallone, if you are still reading this, you don't need to worry about a thing. This film will have legs. Word of mouth will spread about how good it is. Ben Stiller just got owned. You had said you were so excited you couldn't sleep....well get some rest because things are going great out there! All of your sleeping fans are back in full force!!

Saw the 10:25 PM showing of Rocky Balboa Wednesday night. This coming from a person too young to ever see a Rocky movie in theaters before. I took my whole family, and not only did we agree it was one of the best movies of the year, my mom, who is your age, Sly, thought it was one of the best movies she's ever seen. She thought it will really mean something to your generation. We were all crying throughout the movie. It was beautiful and touching, and SO well-acted. Just an amazing performance on your part that really got to all of us. And beautifully written too. Thank you for that montage that rolled during the credits. It really goes to show what an icon Rocky is, and how your character has reached us all. Thank you for an awesome movie. We are going to see it again tomorrow night, that's how much we adored it! And thanks for doing these Q&As. We all have new respect for you. God bless.

HOLY SNAP CRACKLE POP!!! I have been asking for Over the Top questions and even better yet SLY mentions the GREAT LEGENDARY JOHN BRZENK. WOW. thanks for that. For those who ask the question, yes there were many real armwrestlers in the movie. A series of tournaments were held during the production Of OTT that culminated in the tournament that you saw in the movie. The actual tournament last over 24 hours and did not complete until around 6 AM with John Brzenk winning the real truck. If anyone would like more information on armwrestling, the info is out there. Jump on ARM TV'S MESSAGE Board and you can find out. *****but back to Rocky Balboa. I loved it. I cried. The scene with his son has inspired me. I too would like to frame the quote and put it someplace I can be reminded. Sly, you are a true hero. This is your comeback. 350 million world wide. That is my prediction. If you're still reading these talkbacks, Sly, I wanted to personally thank you for what you've done for all of us. It's been a priviledge to hear straight talk from one of my favorite - heck, my ABSOLUTE favorite - celebrity of all time. You've made it abundantly clear that you truly care what your fans think, and that just friggin rules. I saw Rocky Balboa this afternoon with my wife, and we were just blown away. The weird thing is, and my wife completely agreed with me about this, unlike every other movie in the Rocky series, the strength of this film lied in all the scenes before the fight, and not in the fight itself. I don't want to discredit the fight of course, because it was done well and felt more real than any of Rocky's fights put to film, but the rest of the movie was so rich with character that I felt myself getting chocked up over and over again. I think the highlight of the movie (and I find myself getting chocked up again just writing about it) was your speech to your son outside the restaurant. That was such a perfect moment and just glowed with the pure golden character of Rocky. It was a 5-carat diamond in a movie full of gems. Thank you SO much for making this movie. *****SPOILER ALERT***** It was very obvious to me that your smiles and waves to the crowd after the fight were not just from Rocky to that crowd, but also from you to us, your greatest fans. I loved it. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

You love movies like a sunovabitch, and you deserve our thanks for being a conduit for this historic exchange between the fans and Mr. Stallone. Thank you for your generosity and hospitality. This talkbalk, has really helped me get through the last horrid month of my life. By giving me something to look forward to each day, its kept me alive through my health and emotional issues. ( I was nearly killed by a drunk driver). Along the way, youve provided some valuable life advice and have inspired me a great deal. Great films take people away from their own world and into a different place, a different world, where their own problems are not the focus of every second. These escapes are enjoyable for some, but for many it is a reason to move on, and the timeout that one needs to keep on living. Your Films have inspired me, but your many stories and honest advice, have kept me fighting, and have given me the timeout I needed to keep on my journey. Thank you Jay

I'd almost forgotton, but he is really teriffic. And its a well made film too. Nicely shot and edited, well written. Its really good and I highly recommend it. Well done, Sly. The Q&A's have been great, but the real proof of your greatness is there on the screen. You are an excellent filmmaker and I hope you do many more projects.

You really seem like a cool guy. After reading all these interviews it makes me feel happy that my movie hero is actually a sincere real guy. A couple of my bro's saw Rocky Balboa tonight and loved it. They went with guys who were going in there ready to bash the movie and were in complete shock walking out. I didn't get to see it tonight and regret not being there for the opening day. I'm so there tomorrow and cant wait to hear "yo paulie" one more time. Your a truly a motivation. I love how you never gave up and even though people laughed at you when it was announced you were making this movie you still went through with it and proved them all wrong. Rocky came in as an underdog and is leaving as one too. Go Rock and go sly, keep up the good work and I hope to see you infront of the camera making people happy for years to come.

merry holidays everyone! Sly, Harry, Quint, talkbackers... Enjoy real food (not less salt, fat-free, no sugar items) and drink quality wine, XO.cognac, calvados... I'm going to promote r.balboa (wish i had a T-shirt or skihat w/ the name) wherever i go. haven't seen it yet, though. best wishes from Europe.

the combination of Sly's efforts to answer these geeky questions with brutal honesty and warmth, and the fact he's managed to revive his most famous character to (apparently) great success, can mean only one thing: The guy's a frickin' legend. Hats off to Sly, and to AICN for sorting this out. This is by far the best thing this site has run in a long time.

The Twilight Zone Cafe http://twilightzonewor.9.forum er.com/index.php?act=idx Check it out and back me up (Kolchak). Somebody else please tell 'em how good "Rocky Balboa" is and what a champion Stallone is.
I loved reading all the Q&A's, Sly.

You are really a class act. And you were fucking funny too! I just wanted to say that your episode of SNL is still one of the best in my book. The sketch with you as the geek computer store salesman was priceless. Good Luck With "Rocky Balboa".
Just saw it

Long time Rocky fan. I felt everything in this one came straight from the heart. This carries you beyond a lot of nitpicky-ness. Straight from the heart. Nice work Sly.
