Oui. As long as the robits are moving around in Michael Bay mtv-cuts we won't see them long enough to notice that they don't look like they could transform into any kind of vehicle. Just as long as we can tell which transformer we're looking at aside from Optimus and Bumblebee.

How can this trailer be so generic?
by JT Kirk
Dec 20th, 2006
03:06:42 AM
Even for Bay, this was cut so fast that it screams to be analyzed frame by frame rather than watched as a trailer. I guess when you make a generic CGI movie, you get a generic trailer that is meant to throw a lot of quick stuff at you so you don't see anything. I really don't feel anything for those robots, it seems like the most flavorless, high-priced summer popcorn fare that Hollywood pukes out year after year, at this point it all starts to look the same. I'll give Bay this, it doesn't look like a toy movie, it looks like another sci-fi blockbuster - too bad Transformers are based on a toy line and this appears to have nothing to do with it.

What was the point of that? It answers none of the questions that I had, namely, 1. What is the tone of this flick? 2. Are the "Transformers" going to be presented as the stars, or even characters, because there is not one line of dialogue in this trailer. 3. Why are the Decepticons bent on the destruction of our planet? From what I recall, they just wanted fucking Energon cubes. They didn't go out of their way to kill people.

One has to wonder how it could even be possible to make a trailer for a movie like this that is so completely devoid of anything remotely interesting. Boring. I am no fan of Transformers 'toons', but i have to say this does wet my appetite. Surprised at all the negative comments really, but the hard-core fan base is probably noticing things about the set-up that only fans can! I like the low key audio and lack of hard hitting rock that tends to permeate trailers. The film-or at least, its trailer- seems to be trading heavily on a darker angle and influenced by "War of the Worlds" ideals- not too mention "The Terminator." All in all, I was pleasantly surprised!

Not a hardcore fan, but enjoyed all the cartoons from the 80's til now... And this hasn't had my interest at all. Some things just stay in their original form. Da Vinci Code should have stayed a book, and Transformers should have stayed a cartoon.

This movie will appease fans and general audiences like 'Electra.' Fans will hate it, and everyone else will scratch their heads wondering why on earth would giant robots give a rat's arse about the little squishy creatures running around.

But at the same time the robots look sweet. This is coming from a guy who grew up with Transformers and actually saw the '87 film in the theater as a kid. There are some people on this site who hate just about everything no matter what. There could be a movie about the Galactic Empire fighting the hordes of Middle earth in a battle MC'd by Hordac, Skeletor and Satan himself and they'd still complain. I'm optimistic about this project.

I don't know too much about these Transformers, but I think Michael Bay has a chance at making the most ludicrous film of all time here. Giant robots that turn into other things that are not robots? How can than that not be funny? This one and Fantastic Four 2 are the big heavy hitters in terms of multiplex ridicutainment. I predict this Transformers will combine the overwrought emotion of Pearl Harbor with the grand futurist vision of Armageddon and the disturbing character arcs of Bad Boys II. Maybe they don't have a naked surfing guy who is silver in this one, but surely it cannot fail to be hilarious.

If you keep getting the "cannot find server" message, try deleting your tempoary internet files and cookies, turn off your computer and then reboot it. That always works for me. You may just be clogged up.

My problem with getting the trailer to run was, I was encountering a white screen with "PROMOTIONAL ADVERTISEMENT" at the top. You could see the outline of the flashplayer, and could access the right-click options, but it wouldn't actually show the page.

"Being negative just to make yourselves special on this site. GET A LIFE!!"

I hate to get involved with the whole Don Murphy thing, but from that statement you gotta assume...

And just to clarify my positiion on the film before Don or somebody starts quoting me...I wasn't a huge Transformers fan as a kid, I was a G.I.Joe guy (Don't touch that property please. I don't care who you are.), and from what I've seen of the film, the only thing thats really bothering me is Starscream's design. Hopefully that has been changed a bit, he did look like a cock monkey.

Other than that, despite the lackluster teaser/trailer (I'm pretty sure Yahoo hs it listed as "trailer") and some lame bits in the (early draft of) the script, I'll be there opening day to see that final battle that sounded so awesome, in the script, hopefuly thats still in there.

Also, that closing shot of Prime atop Mt.Everest better be in there, or I will book it to the ticket office before the credits roll so I can get my money back. That shot NEEDS to be in there!

I dug the shit out of it! Not sure why they felt it had to be dark in tone, that doesn't automatically buy respect with the fanbase if they felt they had to legitamise it. That said, Bay does now how to blow shit up, and really that's what I'm looking for from a Transformers film (well, as well as giant transforming robots, natch)

The teaser looks amazing, but then every Michael Bay trailer looks amazing. All we're seeing is the special effects, and we already knew those were going to be great. The problem with Michael Bay films are with braindead scripts, lame climaxes at every scene, overused slow motion, and gatling guns on moon rovers. You know, the stuff you don't see in trailers. I hope this movie is good, I really do. But I will remain skeptical until we get some actual reviews of the film's content, rather than just special fx clips.

At first I didn't like the designs. I am warming up to them now. Now the only thing that can sink this movie is the acting performance by that model/actor and and the robot voice actors. I hope the robots don't sound like overdubbed Pixar peeps. I want to believe that the audio is being played through a speaker on the robots. The robot voices better not sound like somebody in a sound booth.

...which is just not much. I dug the cartoon when I was a kid, but I never thought a live-action Transformers was needed. When I see a popcorn flick, I want to see stuff that I have not imagined on my own. Live action Transformers are something that I can easily imagine after watching the cartoon. This seems to be a bunch of cars with legs running around blowing stuff up. There's no atmosphere, no interesting looking characters, just mechanics. I'll admit I was mildly impressed with the trailer, but just don't care about this movie. It doesn't matter if the director is Michael Bay, Peter Jackson, Stephen Speilberg or Guillermo Del Toro. I think the only director that could possibly get me excited for this flick would be Takashi Miike. Did any of you see The Great Yokai War? Now, that was a live-action Saturday morning cartoon.

Michael Bay shouldve had his ass beaten by james lipton after he made the island. Are audiences so stupid they will believe you can survive falling off of a sky scrapper just by staying on a giant letter from a sign. I cant even stay on my couch when my surround sound scares the shit out of me.

are the worlds press sucking Micheal Bays cock on this one? Every article I read is someone praising this film to high heaven. Have they read a differnent script to everyone else and been privvy to extra info? Or does Micheal Bay just have pictures of them all round his house doing copious amounts of drugs?

The trailer is exactly what I thought it would turn out to be. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. There's no passion or emotion in this films crafting. That's obvious. There's nothing here that indicates to me that the filmmakers took the time to understand the original source material. If Michael Bay wants me to care about this film he needs to convey to me that the Transformers are real characters and not just set pieces. Otherwise i'll avoid this movie like the plague.

so, for a first trailer... it didn't jump out and grab me by the nuts like the trailer for The 300, but it DOES look pretty freakin' cool. This had an almost horror film like feeling with the music and the quick cuts and all of the darkness... which is fine, for a first trailer. My hope is that with the second trailer, its more 'action packed' and high energy... and maybe, juuuuuuuuust maybe, we get to hear Optimus say SOMETHING. ANYTHING. or maybe the first part of the rollout quote... "Autobots...." then BAM. end of trailer.

I've got to say that looked cool, much better than i originally gave it credit for and the robots looks fucking amazing. I cannot wait to see the full transformations in effect.

Here's a question for the tool afew posts back who blathers on about "original source material". What original material? What do you consider canon? Toys? Comic? Cartoon? Armada? Energon? They're all fucking different. If you have a hard on over toys then fine, but shut the fuck up already and just admit it; you'll be there opening day.

You make the comic-book-guy from Simpsons look like a dramatic character. I'm still crossing my fingers for a fun movie. I'm also hoping that producer Speilberg has been on Bay's ass, demanding a good flick. I don't know how he's behaved with most of his producing gigs, but I was reading just the other day about how he took control of Poltergeist. Man, he pissed off Tobe Hooper something fierce. Got a real terminator2 vibe from the trailer. My expectations have now been raised from "disinterested" to "could be cool." Liked that fact they seem to talk in machine speak. Liked the moody lighting. Loved the CG. Loved the fact the decepties agenda seems to be total war. Still need to be sold on the a-bots teaming up with good looking youths hook. The trailer did underwhelm me but it "looks" good. The Transformers were just toys you fuck-tards! The cartoon was just a commercial to sell them! Get a grip on reality. It's not like those cartoons had any real story line - 2 sets of robots beating each other up - or significant meaning to your childhood. Arms twisted and they turned into shit. OHHHHH AHHHHHH. It's about time someone did something with them that could actually be entertaining. The GI Joe cartoons were better - they atleast had a real story! Now, I don't cherish every Bay movie - Armag-fuckin or The Island (could have been real good) but c'mon! This is big dumb robots beating each other up ON THE BIG FRIGGIN' SCREEN! 20 feet high with destruction and explosions and humans being squashed and .... ecapist entertainmet. The 3 good Star Wars movies had good stories, the newer ones didn't, hence the hate and I agree. Fuck, it would be like bringing back the New Zoo Review or Captain Kangaroo - there's raping your childhood, fuckers! But this was a fucking NO STORY TOY LINE advertisement for fucks sake! Fuck, Slither had more oF a story then this cartoon had. You haters - man, you must have done something sexual to these toys in the bathtub to garner this much hate. This movie, yet goofey, will kick ass. And the CGI looks great (from the teeny tiny window I could watch the trailer on). Bad Boys II and The Rock were great stupid summer movies. This will be fun as hell.

Woot.

Trailer has a very Spielbergian WotW/JP2 vibe. My only real concern with Bay (not the coke, not the whores, none of the other ad homina that's standing in for discernment here), is his historic inability to hold a shot for more that .02 seconds. Giant Robots Attack Earth should be filled with long, steady, awed takes before going boom. That's what I want from this.

Also, I totally dig the Optimus tease - red and blue with pointy ear dealies? That's Optimus enough for me.

I really hope they stick the transforming sound in, because the jarring, screaching, clanging sound of metal shifting around is really going to lul audiences into loving these pale immitations of the Transformers. I could go off on a rant about how shitty this looks and how the Transformers look like shit on screen and moving just like they did in concept and in still images, but seeing this makes my head hurt. It damages the inner child I tap into everyday that I go to work to as an animator. A part of me wanted to be wrong, a part of me wanted to have all those hookers who suck Michael Bay's dick to be right... but they aren't, they are just sucking harder hoping that the foul crap that they taste isn't going to give them a disease. This "trailer" is weak, and those of you who are converts are weak for thinking this is good. It's not. It just isn't. On the bright side the product placement in this film is so obvious that no one will deny their need to purchase a giant my little pony when this movie is over. Wait, shouldn't they... ah fuck it. This movie sucks because the story sucks, the visuals are half assed, and there is nothing to really draw in fans. The reason we didn't hear Prime is because he only speaks for 8 minutes. I agree with YackBacker for the most part. You can't transform shit into a good movie. ~sigh~ I need to sleep. My inner child wants a nap to forget it saw this.

Tony Scotts latest. Nobody does Vapid bollocks better than Tony scott. This site sometimes attracts, film lovers of a more serious pedigree, who like thier movie to have a more artistic kind of feel. Hollywood is not is the business of Msking art it movies to make money. Some people actually enjoy watching vapid bollocks more than others and this film is for those people and there are lots of them. This is a summer movie. it is not art. I kind of get the feeling from this site that there are people who think that hollywood should be making only one type of film, and that film should not involve people like Bay or rothman or marvel or ratner or singer. Put it another way there some on this site who verbally piss on execs for making. That is what they are paid to do. if you dont like the product then dont purchase the product. For the record - my thought on DaVinci was that it sucked like a peanut butter tipped dick and Golden Retriever. My mind expanded more while rading Where the Sidewalk Ends in 4th fucking grade then seeing that POS. Eternal struggle between good and evil? Like Mr. Fucking Patato Head's good and bad eyes! Or your finger and a itchy ass. You must have had to sit on your scary uncles lap more then a dozen times, feeling bone, and then retreating to the bathroom for some Scuba Optimus in the red eye. Yes, I owned a few toys, and they were cool to play with and all but man. Lucas had the rights to the toys prior - yeah, but the story was cool and iconic. Explosions, trucks and helicopters shifting into giant robots, running and screaming... This movie shouldn't be too cerebral. It should be a fun, action filled summer movie, which it looks to be. And this coming from a fan of the original series. Some of the designs of the characters didn't thrill me (Megatron) but it looks like it could work onscreen. One question I have though is, how will they introduce more characters in the inevitable sequel? Are there more Autobots and Decepticons in a sort of standby mode, wating to take shape? Or will they be sort of in orbit in other parts of the galaxy? Or will the current characters just evolve into different shapes? Or I'm looking too hard into this...

For one, you only got to see three seconds of robots ... for two, said robots don't look like they have much of a personality ... for three, Michael Bay's old gimmick of good ol' boys fighting for freedom, "they have come to destroy us" attackers from a foreign soil only inspires you if you're a hillbilly ready to play some Medal of Honor while wearing your American Flag boxer shorts. The Transformers were not meant to be some United States Action Squad, but Michael Bay will make them that way ... I thought watching Team America would have inspired Bay to try something different ...

Yep, still looks like ass. Sorry, but these designs aren't bad because they don't look like the originals. They're bad because they're bad, and the ultimate triumph of a design philosophy that says more detail is better than less, which isn't true. These designs are animalistic, over-complicated and just look cruddy because of that. I think looking more like the originals would get asses on seats, and I don't see the point of paying for a licence you have no intention of actually using, but these designs are just terrible all on their own. The sad fact is that Transformers is a strong permise, and COULD support a decent film. But because of this, it won't get one. Phazer

I'm not going to disagree: giant robots blowing up shit on earth is always a good time. Between that premise, and Michael Bay (who is great at filming things blowing up) directing, and Spielberg's name attached, This movie would be a blockbuster with or without the Transformers name. What us nay-sayers (or at least this nay-sayer) take umbrage with is Bay saying this is based on G1 Transformers, using familiar names, even getting Cullen for Prime, and then tossing the actual personalities of these characters right out the window. Hell if I saw the same trailer and the robots had different names and it was called, I don't know, "Giant Robots Fighting on Earth!" (ala "Snakes on a Plane") I would receive this much more warmly. If you you think the cartoon was just an ad to sell toys, you'd be right. But the personalities of these characters came through and there was a a cohesive story arc throughout the series. Bay's made this film knowing he doesn't need any of that to sell a movie about (say it with me again!) GIANT ROBOTS BLOWING SHIT UP. In conclusion, oh to hell with it. Changing peoples minds is like changing peoples assholes... wait, where was I going with that?

Does anyone else see the connection? Come on! Someone on here has to be older than 14. I don't much care for the new Transformers, but they look like a bunch of trash was magnetized and stuck together ... a wire here, some shards there ... A better movie would be one where the Americans are helpless to save themselves (cue patriotic Hans Zimmer score) and the Japanese (God Bless 'Em!) just so happen to be building life-sized Transformer toys with AI for kids, though ... and the toys actually save us! Wait ... and Robin Williams can be the mentally deranged Japanese toymaker ... and Joan Cusack can be his hentai-looking kid-sister. And shit ... you can have LL Cool J as a general in the US Military who hates the Japanese, and is really stubborn, but then decides that using toys, instead of weapons of mass destruction, is really the way to defeat the Decepticons (who look like fucking retarded, btw).

Come on mate. What do kids have today you say? Even if it were only everything by Tartakovski and McCracken not to mention cool-arse stuff like Giant Robo (O.K. derivative but no more than transformers ripping on the Japanese robot stuff), that would be more than enough. The roid rage is getting to you mate.

As for Lucas getting the toy rights before the movie, research you disingenous uh, person. The film/story came first, and the licensing rights have been acknowledged for decades as the greatest stroke of luck/studio fumble of all time. The suits handed over the rights precisely because tie-in rights were worth bugger-all back then. If Lucas was so calculating why wasn't there a bunch of merch all ready to go? The figures took the best part of a year to come out! Luck. Sure he may do it precisely like that these days, but give us a break with your revisionist history mate.

Hey, if you think the cartoon was genius then fair enough good for you (my kid is really getting into it now but it still looks pretty lousy - clichéd Sat morning cheap animated drivel to me - this is the old stuff I'm talking about), and maybe repeated viewing warranted more merit than I know, but fair's fair. You can't hold up the original as some pop culture paragon and also slam a movie for playing hard and fast with an extended toy ad. They were just out to make a buck then, and so are these guys now. If we're talking Transformers, everything's fair game. Even nipples on Optimus. P.S. Interesting that my kid who's reasonably oblivious to marketing shenanigans is succumbing to the ads/toy porn and is pressuring me big time for the Trannie toys. I thought I was home free after Harry Potter failed to make an impact!

Boy I hope you're joking there. Darfur. You scare me!

...if anyone had been able to produce a link to an actual quote from Bay, saying that this movie was going to be a G1 interpretation, back when I first asked where that misconception came from, I'd feel for you. As it stands, though, the most I've seen attributed to the man is that some of the names will be the same and some of the character dynamics and relationships will be there. He never once said these robots would look like the G1 robots. So he's following prettymuch right in line with the various legitimate interpretations of Transformers we've gotten since G1 ended...keeping the big bad Megatron, the big good Optimus and sticking familiar names on unfamiliar toy designs, sometimes for characters who are radically different than their G1 namesakes in personality and allegiance. What's his foul, again? Oh. Right. He didn't make the G1 movie that some angry, tunnel-visioned nostalgia buffs were dreaming of. Somehow I don't think that's going to prevent this from being successful and, if the trailer's any indication (and I've seen enough trailers to know it might not be), a cool movie about giant transforming robots to boot. But, by all means, continue bitching about the movie you'd rather have had if that's making you feel better.

You just have to let go of your extreme devotion to the original series. It is dated. Very dated. And I'm a HUUUGE Transformers fan. I grew up with them. You just have to understand that if they kept all of the elelments of the show, THEN this flick would be a pointless piece of shit. After seeing this trailer, all hope is restored. Come on guys. Let's just pretend that you never read the online script (which by the way is NOT the shooting script), you never saw an early concept design, you never read a character breakdown, etc. Let's pretend it's pre-AICN time. You're sitting in the theater and this trailer shows up. You'd be creaming your pants. Plain and simple. The internet has destroyed that magic for most of you. You pick apart the smallest detail. There had to be changes, plain and simple. The only way you naysayers would be happy is if you saw a trailer will direct adaptations of the looks and sounds of the 80s show. And you know what, they'd look retarded. Bay and Spielberg are looking to make transformers REAL. You couldn't do that with those character designs. The whole VW Beetle complaint for Bumblebee is just as lame. It would be so dated to see him as a VW beetle. It would look cheesy as hell. Normally I'd say sit back and wait for the movie to come out before you judge it... but let's face it, you've already decided that it's going to suck. You've already decided that you're not going to like it. Based off of that trailer though, expect BIG Box Office numbers. Why? Because it appeals to the masses.

Bumblebee or Starscream. He always get the best lines in Michael Bay movies. Past that, gotta agree about the, in name only thing. It looks like it'll have some great FX and explosions and be a fun and entertaining ride. But Transformer has years of characters and stories in its own mythology and I get the impression we aren't going to see much of that in this movie. Granted it'll likely still be better than the any of the post-BeastMachines series, but I don't see the kind of translation we got from Spider-Man and X-Men. And if it does get the TINO syndrome. Again the question must be asked. Why take the name if you don't want the history? I mean they could've called it GoBots. Or Clerks 3(the Clerks 2 Transformers debate was hilarious). Actually, the trailer does seem a little more like the GoBots invasion story than Transformers original search for energon. Of course it might not be TINO and if showed a cool photo realist CG Cybertron that would be pretty damn sweet. CG Unicron would pretty cool too. Speaking of Spider Man. None of this is going to matter much anyway. After Spider Man 3 comes out in May. Expect fandom will be looking at the rest of the Summer line up and saying "God, why can't they make more movies like Spider Man 3." Same way Batman Begins spoiled us for rest of the Summer when it came out.

There was one shot of Scorponok that reminded me of the early Marvel Comics where the robots were treated to a darkened and cold feel. Okay, well, it looks good. Who'd expected otherwise? Bay's films always look good. I'm holding out for a few lines of spoken dialog. Still, there is little that compels me to see this. The idea of watching robots beat the snot out of each other isn't enough to get me in the theater. In fact, even less so if those unfamiliar robots with unfamiliar personalities refer to each other by familiar names. We know it is drastically different from the source material. So different that calling it Transformers is insulting and will likely leave me yearning for what should have been made instead of what was. Will wait for cable.

...in Hollywood says "based on." For an example, look at the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Based on Ed Gein. Okay, so Leatherface cuts off people's skins and does weird stuff with them. The similarities end there. Completely. Or Wolf Creek. Based on the true story as told by a survivor who was unconscious for most of what comprises the movie? Okay... I'm not trying to make an excuse for De Santo. Maybe he doesn't need me to. Maybe he had every intention of making this a faithful G1 movie. But he obviously got overruled by someone. Point is, the very nature of the Transformers franchise is pretty fluid. Character names get recycled and reassigned from iteration to iteration. Sometimes you get a bad guy with a good guy's name or vice versa. Even revisitations of "classic" designs in the toys look different than their 80s counterparts. About the only constants for the American market are the idea of an Optimus something as the primary good guy and a Megatron as the primary baddie. This movie gets that right and makes the designs of many of the characters direct nods to their G1 counterparts (Prime as a big red and blue truck, Starscream as a jet, Bumblebee as a yellow not-quite-cool car and Jazz as a sporty little number). That's giving G1 fans a lot for a movie that's clearly not an interpretation of the G1 storyline.

...that this trailer changd anyone's mind about the movie, either way. This trailer is exactly what you'd expect from a Michael Bay transformer movie. Did anyone really think the effects wouldn't kick ass? Did anyone really think the robots would have much dialogue? I could run off a list of shitty movies with great special effects, and half of them are directed by Michael Bay, and *all* of them have awesome fucking trailers. There's no question that this movie will look good. There's no question that this movie will have little or nothing to do with any previous incarnation of the Transformers. The only question is whether this movie is going to fall into the Godzilla/ID4/AVP camp or the T2/Spider-Man camp. Given Bay's history, I'm betting the former. And, y'know, *that's* when being a Transformers fan starts to suck. Because a *different* TF movie is fine, but a *shitty* TF movie will piss me off.

The biggest thing this movie has to accomplish is make the Transformers into real characters. They are NOT giant robot monsters -- even the Decepticons. The fact that this movie is so focused on humans could be a good thing or it could be a bad thing. I guess my fear is that I have never seen a good character-based film by Michael Bay. I have seen entertaining spectacles that focused on destruction and explosions...but every time he had a real character moment, it might look pretty but it comes across as flat.

And this trailer, which I understand is basically a second teaser, is just falling flat. Lots of quick cuts of things shifting and metal moving, but I will hold my judgement until I see things clearer.

I mean--he has missed a real opportunity. All he had to do was basically show a car sitting out in the desert or something,--in full daylight. People walk by it and absolutely do not notice it. It transforms into one of the characters, lock and loads it's cool gun, maybe looks at the audience, or a person in frame-- and then walks out of frame. we get a montage of action sequences then the title. End teaser. Audience goes crazy for it.

But they are hiding the designs of the characters--because they suck. They know people are unhappy with them and they are trying to say "Hey we made a movie with great explosions which is just like my other movies with great explosions, so don't be afraid. Come to the theatre and spend you money. You are getting exactly what you pay for--nothing new or thought provoking here. Step into my web of explosive lies."

And they really need the sound effect from the show. That thing is just tits.

Hahah, oh I know, I still sting from Ep 1...

But Lucas totally effed with an existing aesthetic and narrative structure (and showed a complete lack of directing skills). While I love Transformers the cartoon, I have no existing feeling or expectations of that they will look like in Live Action. I also know that to directly translate the old cartoons to a film like this will be difficult and won't work. All I really want is a big expensive looking action movie that doesn't completely offend me, and I think I'll get that. What really gives me hope in this is the brief shot of the Autobots all driving through the desert. It totally nails the feeling of the old toon. I hope that extends throughout the rest of the pic. But I could be wrong (I never am, Armageddeon kicks ass)
