Thanks for the great interview. Julyan's score for The Descent is one of my favorites for this year. His "majestic nature" theme is great...it's the music from some of the over-head shots of the mountains in The Descent, and the shots of the glaciers in the beginning of Insomnia. Julyan seems to reuse some of the same thematic material between the two scores (The Descent and Insomnia), but it's not all a retread. He's not obnoxious about it like some composers though--such as Glass or Horner--who reuse entire scores and expect no one to notice (hell, Glass reuses the same two _measures_...that's the nature of the minimalist beast, I guess).

I adore the MEMENTO sounstrack. Funny thing is, I've seen THE PRESTIGE three times already and haven't really noticed the score yet, but seeing as I adore the film (it's already one of my 15 favorite films of all time; MEMENTO is 2nd) it is certainly doing its job. This may be an interesting distinction, between scores that call attention to themselves (Shore's work for LOTR, anything by Herrmann or Glass) and scores that work at a less overtly conscious level. Perhaps too obvious suggestion for a future interview: Gustavo Santaolalla.

Julyan is probably my favorite film composer right now. The Descent is an amazing score. I was hoping that maybe, someday, a certain long-running spy series might contact him.

tis true. Sadly, I don't remember the score quite all that well, but I guess it had an effect on the movie being so amazingly awesome.
Scorekeeper, do you think you could get Philip Glass?

during Batman Begins at the theatre, right when he was sliding down the side of the mountain trying to save darkman. An unscheduled intermission that was quite annoying to say the least.

As far as my interviews go, I get offers from several publicity companies to interview their clients. Some I accept. Some I turn down. I just don't have time to interview everybody even though I may want to. I've tracked down some on my own but for the most part they're coming to me. I haven't been offered Philip Glass yet but rest assured I most certainly wouldn't turn down an interview with this legendary composer.

Julyan and Chris Young are the only film music composers who can handle the droning suspense music demanded of them without it being just plain dull. They can create oppressive, claustrophobic music that retains interest AS music.
