Seriously I don't understand the hate for it around here. It's a whole lot of fun since it doesn't take itself seriously. It like a fun B grade action serial. You guys are way too harsh on it. And its better than Sahara.

National Treasure was a pleasant suprise. It trumped The Da Vinci Code and Sahara in pretty much every way, and with almost no violence. Looking forward to the second one.

National Treasure was about a thousand times better than Sahara. There were some good moments in Sahara, but overall, NT was just great fun. Plus it didn't have Penelope Cruz. Ironic that NT is considered better than DaVinci Code since the next Langdon novel apparently deals with the Masons. As for NT2, I am all about it and will absolutely be there on opening night! All my friends loved it as well, so I know they're down. And to the person who said "no one asked for" this, so what? Usually the best presents are the ones you didn't think of. I certainly didn't expect a sequel.

"Man..we need to find something. OH LOOK! its right there!" the only time i laughed while watching sahara was when they explained what the "Panaman" thing was. "We thought we were in panama" was the best line in the movie. it sucked otherwise. NT was 1000x better than Sahara.

And I mean that is a good way. I have read all the Dirk Pitt books and each basically followed the same structure. I did like the book Sahara alot. I love it when pitt becomes heartless to the bad guy (like in all the books) at end - like Sahara tying the guy down out in the sun first then he gets the water. But what Matt Mc did, while making it lighter, yes - leaving out major stuff - still made a pretty good movie. I love the books but thought this was not such a bad version. I would love to see a series while him in the lead, even if it has a somewhat lighter tone. I'm actually bummed that no other books are being optioned - Cussler is pissed a the movie and all - but, in no ways is it Raiders of the Lost Ark, but it could be a great franchise. As for national Treasure - I read DiVince when it first came out. Dude, turning the pages of the book was more exciting then watching it in the movies. My girlfriend and I saw it in Georgetown DC one night. We actually had a woman take off her shirt during the flick - titties exposed - sitiing right next to my girlfriend. The lady got up prior to the end - funniest shit ever. Anyway, National Treasure is what DiVinci SHOULD HAVE BEEN! I thought it was fun.

I did not see it in the theater though it did really well in the theater so I was not that surprised when they said they would do a sequel, though not every successful movie needs a sequel. That being said, I watched it on cable in a hotel room in Philadelphia and I enjoyed it very much and will probably see the sequel in the theaters. I think it will do really well with a lot of people seeing it on DVD and not in the theater and enjoying it then seeing the sequel in the theater. It seemed to work for Pirates of the Carribbean. National Treasure was a fun adventure flick.

Speed 3 - What. The. Fuck. I'd rather has 13 Indiana Jones wanna-be's then that shit. The first Speed sucked. The second was fucking worse then that. And after what they did to Alien vs Predator I certainly HOPE they never make part 3 ..... They'd have a kid friendly Predator holding some Dakota Fannings hand, walking thru the grass and picking flowers in some sort of Frankeinstien type PG flick. Dude - bite your tonge! Shame!

Dec 19th, 2006
11:56:57 AM
Anytime a character says, "It's not about the money," you know right away the movie will end with the thieves becoming insanely rich (see "National Treasure" and "Italian Job" remake). Just because the film makers shove it down our throats that the "heroes" don't kill anyone, that doesn't make them any less of greedy thieves who deserve to go to prison. Unless the movie is intentionaly dark (which N.T. aws not), it's hard to root for criminal characters, and therefore hard to enjoy the movie.

and it's the kind of blockbuster we don't see enough of...it wasn't violent, it moved fast, didn't take itself too seriously (ala Da Vinci Code), plenty of humour, had a plot and story that was easy to follow and more importantly, fun and it was something the whole family could enjoy. I'd like to see a sequel for sure and fingers crossed, Jon Voight gets more to do this time (hopefully the inclusion of Gates' mother should give him a few funny scenes)...as long as they keep to the same template, it should be a good'un.

...when they gave all the gold they found at the end of the film to the government? It's hard to not invent reasons to hate movies that aren't loved by geeks and stuff, but if you watched 'National Treasure' voluntarily and expected better, then I'm not quite sure what to say to you.

Wow, I think I owe myself $50. I had no idea such a person existed. Also, how stupid would a government have to be to put all its most scandalous secrets into a single book? That's almost as asinine as dumping billions of dollars a day into a losing effort to save face for a war that never should have... been... oh, right. Okay, I guess it's believable.

The movie is what it is - a kind of mindless, fun adventure flick which involves a simplistic smidge of history and archaeology. Frankly, I was surprised how much I actually liked the movie. It is basically a B-Grade Indiana Jones meets your third graders Social Studies book. But casting a likeable everyman like Cage and an affable hot chick like Kruger simply works. I don't understand how anyone could "hate" this movie. It was well done for what it is, and I'll definately be renting the sequel. I mean, if Harry can rave about Godzilla, this ought to be up for an Academy Award.

i always admired the guy who read Da Vinci Code on the first day and totally "americanised" it with the NT script. Da Vinci was a fun book but was always going to be a bad film the moment Ron Howard and Forrest Dump got involved. Sahara was also lighthearted fun. by all means bring on Sahara 2 and NT 2, but i suspect any more Robert Langdon films will be bad. very bad.
Angels and Demons .....

Dec 19th, 2006
01:30:03 PM
is, I guess, getting made. But after the snore that was the DaVinci movie - not the book - my hopes are bashed. I like A&D better then DaVinci but the oppurtunity was there to make a great "out of time" chase flick and all it had was Hanks pontificating like some idiot savant. Turning the page while reading it was more excitement .... I couldn't wait to keep reading. A&D was a great read also - minus the somewhat utter disbelief of an ending. Maybe they can take a lesson from National Treasure and make a hookey beach read into into a cool B movie flick. lose Howard and bring on Michael Bay as director! Atleast he would make it interesting. 16 cuts per second of Hanks rubbing his chin and doing math.
'National Treasure' wasn't very good...
by Ribbons
Dec 19th, 2006
02:14:10 PM
...and in fact I'm not angry that people don't like the movie. I wouldn't choose to watch it again. It's just... it's like this: NT was no worse than movies like 'Hostel' or the Toho Godzillas, yet people on this site have "geekgasms" for that crap but then inexplicably display a measure of discerning taste when it comes to old-fashioned Disney flicks. And why? Because it wasn't pre-approved by Nick Nunziata? But of course, dumb fun is okay when it's sanctioned by a bunch of popular geeks, because then you feel like you're participating in something communal by watching it. The only problem is how many people convince themselves there's actually a difference in quality between what they like and what other people like. "Hey, that Happy Feet sure looks good! What's it about? Penguins or something, right? I don't know, whatever. All I know is that the people who run Ain't-It-Cool-News have gone on record saying they're looking forward to it, therefore it looks good!"

Ummm, I just like that they find the treasure. And that all the clues make enough sense that I don't roll my eyes and give up on it. It's like the dang Braveheart argument; if the movie doesn't even start with "based on a true story(or events)", it's just a movie. If you want facts, go to a library (which I do, that was not meant to be an insult). Or at the very least, watch a documentary. Movies are just movies. They are meant to allow you to FORGET about the real world (a majority of the time, anyway). Suspension of disbelief.

who liked National Treasure, even if I'm still trying to figure out how much gambling debt Harvey Keitel had hanging over his head when he signed on to the movie. As far as Sahara is concerned, I liked the plot of the book a lot more, where they find Lincoln in the ship in the desert (and no, it wasn't as nonsensical as it sounds). The Cussler books in general are pretty good, and its a bit disappointing that what could have been a great franchise was handled so poorly. And as much as I like Steve Zahn, he was completely miscast as Al.
