there were still several good episodes and a couple of moments of former greatness ('can i borrow your copy of swank, armin?'; 'you are not ganesh!'), but i agree that the shittiness was already plain in several episodes: especially the lord of the flies one & the kids as news anchors. i gave up watching after the racehorse ep a few seasons later.

The people who say that even season 9 is unwatchable clearly aren't familiar with the episodes in this particular season. 9 ranks among the best seasons in its political satire and social commentary and a good many of the episodes have grown to be classics. The Lord of the Flies and the Trash Man episodes are two of the most memorable in the show's canon. It may not be the genius of Season 8, but it's still damn good television. I would also argue that the departure of Sam Simon was a big loss for the show, but not its death knell. The reduced roll of David Mirkin is certainly to blame for some of the show's slide in quality over the years.

It became the biggest show in the world, and had to accomodate a global audience. The subtle humour had to be lessened and the slapstick played up, because a groin-shot is funny in any culture. So it comes down to whether you're okay with "sharing" the Simpsons with the world or not.

For those people blinding buying this DVD, don't. It's not a "new" release. It's exactly the same as the previous best of Steve Martin disc, but with a handful of new sketches on it. If you own the previous one, I would not say this is justified worth buying, and it's definitely not a "2".

In full disclosure I think seasons 3 and 4 were the pinnacle of writing on this show. I think the Monorail episode in season 4 was simultaneously one of the funniest episodes, period and the beginning of the end where flexible reality snapped and any heart was completely sacrificed on the altar of comedy. I also still watch it, because it is still funny if not as good as it once was. However, Season 9 was the season where there was a noticeable decline in quality. I wonder if this is when they began to work on Futurama? It seems that since Futurama debuted (during the Simpsons 10th Season?) any heart or real character was incorporated into Futurama. It may have been simply divided effort (ala the last and worst season of Buffy when Joss had two other shos on his plate), but when the Simpsons was at its nadir around the 9th-12th seasons, Futurama came in and started blowing it away in comedy and heart.

That is the last season I have purchased. And it still has lots of crappy eps. I will never purchase the Simpsons again. The sad part is, most of season 9 is terrible, but it is still ten times better than whatever passes for the "Simpsons" these days. I've said this before, but I will say it again. It's like your grandmother in the late stages of Alzheimer's. They are just a former shell of themselves, and the most tragic part is that you can remember just how brilliant and amazing they used to be. And sadly, you just want them to die.

But there is some crap in that season too. You can see it really dropping off with the news anchor episode. And yes, the New York episode is a gem too "Kalkalesh" In the UK they didnt show the New York episode for about 2 or 3 years after 9/11. Always though that was sad because it is not only a really funny episode but it also felt like they had won because we were censoring ourselves. Just a thought.

. . . Sam Simon's The Bitter Half was the most painful listening experience EVER. It was a complete inside joke to faithful Howard Stern listeners like me and I still thought it completely sucked beyond belief. My wife & I listened to it on a car trip and were actually embarassed for everyone involved. Come on now, Herc, I agree with you that The Simpsons have completely gone down hill, but the worst Simpsons episode slaughters the Bitter Half.

1. They're still funny. No, maybe not as funny as the heyday of seasons 6-9, but really, the whining and bitching is way out of proportion. 2. They hold up much better in reruns than Family Guy or (especially) American Dad. 3. Remember that whining and bitching I mentioned earlier? It really does a damned good job of reminding the rest of us why we don't give a shit what you mewling basement-dwelling trolls say about the show, because you just love to hear your own hateful opinions and pretend you've got the authority to dictate whether a show is worthwhile or not. Don't like it? There are like 70 other channels you can pick from, and that's just on my basic cable. Watch. Something. Else. That said, the Skinner episode in season 9 does suck, but every show sucks once in awhile. Even Cop Rock.

The sad thing about the Simpsons is that yes, you could argue that their episodes the last ten or so years, while better than a lot of what is on tv, suck so bad compared to the first ten or so years, that it is just sad to watch. And it is ranters like silentbobafett2 up above that really piss me off. I'm not even sure if he was serious or not, but it was Simpsons fans that should have been the natural audience for Futurama, but too many jagoffs got offended when people dared to say that Futurama was FUNNIER than the Simpsons, (WHICH IT WAS) and refused to watch Futurama. for the simpson's demise, but I think that it's just the amount of time that it's been on the air that's killed it. Look at the life of a typical sitcom. It's not usually for the first season or two, but it shows glimpses of greatness. Then it hits it starts to get funny a few seasons in, then really hit's it's stide in like season 6 or 7. Usually, it will then start to lose it, for whatever reason. Most good sitcoms know to end before it gets really bad (Seinfeld smartly bowed out after nine seasons, cheers after 11 I think) but the Simpsons has just kept going. I think when shows feel to comfertable with themselves, they just loose their edge or something. But who knows, maybe it will get it's second wind by season 20!
