It's been so long since I've agreed with Eddie Murphy on anything. It's nice to see (in addition with the possibility of another concert film) that he's somewhat returning to his roots.

friend of mine went to Roosevelt HS, related to me this anecdote I can slightly verify 'cuz I played some HS Sports (GO MULES!) against the Rough Riders of Roosevelt...anyhoo, if you went to a public HS, chances are you recall getting textbooks handed to you by the teacher, yeah? The way my buddy told it, he's flipping through his 9th grade(?...we 'wuz high) Biology book, trying to affix the cover-and-spine saving brown paper bag to the already dilapidated textbook, when, lo' and behold, while glancing at the names previously written onto the tome, he finds his mom's (maiden and first, I suppose) name.

And I know what some prankster of jokester is thinking ('cuz, well, I asked him right off)..."Well, being black your moms must've had you at, what, 12 or so?" {this is where I should tell ya'll that we were very good friends, 'cuz while I'm a big dude, my man dwarfed me, and I wouldn't dare say anything like that unless we were good enough boys to get away with that type of smacktalk).

Turns out she was around 20 when she had him and he was, what, I guess 14 or so when he entered the 9th grade? Regardless of the fuzzy math, it had been 30+years since the students had received new text books. 30 years.

I'm amazed anyone made it out of there, much less the interesting list of cats you mentioned Herc. If I'm not mistaken (and I haven't lived at home in, since, forever, so this could be BS) but I think the State took over running the school sometime in the mid to late 1990's.

oh and Grando, Lipton is a fucking travesty of a joke, but his interview with Dave Chappelle was one of the better interview sessions, like, ever. I can see Dave, and James, doing well here. Plus, Eddie's pretty good in Dreamgirls...

Vampire in brooklyn, Daddy day care, Pluto Nash and i would have included The haunted house, I saw that recently, not bad. Dr doolittle movies are debtable because some people really like those movie and then there is that religious comedy he did a while ago, awful stuff, i think it was called the guru. Then there is that movie he did with Martin Lawrence. Again some really like that film.

But what happened to the guy? I watch the SNL best of atleast once a month. I used to have the bootleg back in 1989 - VHS copied from a 7-11 in Ocean City Maryland, but have recently upgraded, and that never gets dull. And I thought The Klumps was pretty damn funny, if not the only good thing he's done in years. Can't stand the donkey shtick he does in Shrek- too damn much energy bordering on annoyance. I guess it's fair to let the insults fly for my Klumps remark. I earned it.

As a teacher up in Canada, I find that story about the old text books a sad commentary on the US government's priorities. ONE F-22 costs $6 Million plus. Couldn't they just spend some more on education in the inner-cities and in general? I think that there definitely too much hateration going on with Eddie Murphy. I like Stallone, but his bombs rival Eddie Murphy's. In fact I think that Eddie had a better 90's than good ol'Sly. I find it unreasonable that people want Eddie Murphy of the 80's. RAW is seen as a high point for his comedic talent. But perhaps we should realize that a person changes as time passes by, and as such their career changes also.

...but his sense of entitlement/attitude far outstripped his skill set very quickly after he acheived a modicum of success. He was at hiks best when he was hungry. He was clearly smart and edgy and angry, and he brought some of that to his comedy, but eventually he figured he'd paid his dues (at the ripe young age of about 25) and fuck anyone who doesn't like what I have to say or do. You want to see what Eddie could've become if he'd maintained a bit of perspective and some sense of humility. Check out Chris Rock. Eddie may be worth more on paper, but you couldn't trade me a hundred eddies for one Chris.

Most comedic leading men have a short shelf life. They eventually get boring. Look at Jim Carrey. I can't even tolerate him anymore. That one TBer made a great point about Eddie's Tranny problem. Right after that incident he started doing these bland, vanilla movies. He's become the black Bob Saget. The problem is Eddie Murphy is wasting his talent.

Harlem Nights is one of my favorite Eddie Murphy movies. Some of my favorite lines: "Bitch, I'm not playin'. You gonna be the nine-toe havingest, limpin'est bitch in Harlem, you don't put that razor away!" RP: "So how was your date?" EM: "I killed her!" RP: "Oh you tore the pussy up?" EM: "Naw man, I killed her..I shot her!" RP: "Was the pussy that bad?" "Just because your last name is Heroin, doesn't mean you have to sell it!" RP: "Hey little man take it easy, everything is going to be O.K., gimme five!" Young EM: "I ain't giving you shit!" DL: "Bennie! Why the fuck you leave nothing but a swallow of Orange Juice in the refridgerator? It don't make no sense, to leave nothing but a swallow!" RF: "Bitch! Swallow it and shut the fuck up!" ....yeah Vera is such a sweet and sensitive lady... "Ohhhh you want to hit people with a trash can...nowwwww I gots to cut ya!" JJ: P-P-P-P-unk B-B-B-B..Ass..B-B-B-Bi... RP: "It's O.K. Jack, I know. These are from memory so I am sure I jacked some of them up. Really underated movie. RIP to all the great comic legends in the movie. Is Della Reese's fat ass still alive?

"a white man got to pull Rocky Marciano out they ass." Sadly, I fear there may be no way to recapture the magic. There was a flash of hope with The Nutty Professor (a movie that had nothing to lose with a remake...the original wasn't that good), and what I think made that work was the interplay between the characters, especially all the ones that Murphy plays. That sort of thing isn't really possible in a safer family movie, since fast-flying jokes and kids don't really mix. We're left with physical gags which isn't really Eddie Murphy's forte anyway. Dr. Doolittle was decent for what it was, but honestly it's like seeing someone like Christopher Walken in shite like The Country Bears. Like plating a toilet paper holder with gold when brass would suffice.

Eddie Murphy will never lose his status as a comedy legend. Like many fans, I keep my fingers crossed that he will put something out that blows the lid off of theaters with laughter. The last time he did that was "Coming to America." I'm waiting for something to top that.

Murphy's first stand up video Delirious is one DVD I'll buy if it ever gets out of the hands of the lawyers. 20 some years later it is still one of the funniest concerts, that I have not seen topped. If Sly can get kudos for Copland for being one bright spot in a rather dragged out career, give Eddie Murpky his role in Bowfinger as it was also a small role that shined his talents.
