I agree. Young people, especially young men, need increased responsibility and toughness early in the lives as boys. There's an old saying I heard that success never reaches three consecutive generations. If a father is a fine hardworking man, and his son is also a successful hardworking man, then HIS son (the third generation) is in trouble. Greatness doesn't go beyond two generations because the third will have it too easy. People have written about this concept for centuries. The pussification of the third generation after two great ones.

Not that I'm complaining. As a Woody Allen nut I was hoping for an anecdote about the little(r) guy and I got it. I've also got stories about bird-munching arm wrestlers, toothpaste commercial wannabes who can't drive, how to get Sharon Stone naked for a shower scene, stolen Cobra cars and the truth behind the three seashells. Not only that; through the talkbacks I learned about Stallone puppets in France and got all involved in the indomitable spirit of Rambo Cricket. A month ago, my ignorant image of Sly was that of a mumbling asshole who used to make boxing flicks but was terrific in Copland. Now I know he took himself from sleeping in bus shelters to being one of the smartest, funniest and most unexpectedly honest dudes in Hollywood. My apathy has turned into admiration, and I have to say he's inspired me. The bastard isn't just a self-made man, he's a nice guy as well, yet one who's not afraid to respond to death threats by confronting the person responsible, who for all he knew could have been some chainsaw-wielding psychopath (or possibly Carl Weathers). What a righteous dude. Sly, you are now on my hero list.

I think this is why that movie Fight Club was (well, is) so popular. I think a lot of young men identify with it because these days we have to create our own formative experiences. We may be grateful that our lives are easy and, for example, we're no longer being conscripted to go climb out of trenches into a hail of gunfire or work in a coal mine 16 hours a day just because our fathers always did. But I also think we feel guilty, and jealous of people who do have their identities formed by hardship and/or great deeds. Is our western culture feminised? I don't know, but I'd certainly say us young men feel less like real men when we find ourselves in the cosmetics aisle of the supermarket, wondering which deoderant to buy. Or being stressed by our undemanding office jobs. I've been shot with a blank-firing gun (yes, it's possible), had my heart broken a couple of times (neither on account of the gun) and been a borderling alcoholic, but this is the sum total of my rites-of-passage. I've never even thrown a punch. I didn't feel patriotic until I moved abroad, and even then it was more nostalgia than patriotism. I definitely feel like I'm missing some life-defining experience, and I suppose in the absence of spears and lions I have to find this by proxy with movies and books about people who have it tougher than I ever did. Is this why characters like Rocky are so popular? Sorry, this post is long and not really about Sly, but I'm curious to know if you folks agree with any of it...

The remake of Bonanza is nearly approaching greenlight status. Paramout is said to be very close to trying to Snag Sly Stallone as one of the Cartright Brothers. That would truly be a casting coup and adding his possible writing and directing skills. Here is the near complete casting. Dom Deliuse as Pa Cartright. Of course, its a little touch n go due to his weight. Paramount has lined up Paul Sorvino in case Deliuse fails his physical. Little Joe would be played by Joe Pesci, Hoss will be played by James Gandolfini , Adam would be played by Sly Stallone, and Hop Sing would be played by Jet-Li. Madonna as the town madame and of course the bad guy guest-star would be Bobby Deniro with Harvey Keitel as the Sheriff. How about Will Smith as the former ex-slave who works as the black-smith and instills in the Cartrights a sense of civility and Justice for equal rights. Not to mention - his hilarity and comedic skills. and of course - we have come-back player Mickey Rourke as the mysterious ranch-hand with the disfigured face and past who carries a grudge against the cartwrights and their abuse of power. Love interest for Sly in Sharon Stone returning as the town floozy and of course Lindsay Lohan as the long-lost wayward daugther of Sly. Joe Ganascoli aka Vito from the Sopranos will be reprising his role as the mysterious rancher Vito with an infactuation with another ranch hand named Johnny-Cakes. I think Sly as the brooding and intellectual Adam will be quite the fit. Paramount expects shooting to begin (barring any possible legal and clearance) in August 2007 with a July 4, 2008 release.

I just want to say, I can totally relate. I love watching these bad-ass, tough-talking, terse and masculine stars like Clint Eastwood, Steve McQueen, Stallone, etc. even though I'm absolutely nothing like these guys, i.e. in comparison I'm a feminized wuss. I think a large part of it is because is me trying to live vicariously through their onscreen personas, and imagining what it'd be like to be a "man's man." I mean, we're living in an age where young people like us can sit back and actually have our pick of the litter as to what college we want to go to...when just a few generations back, our relatives had to actually immigrate from another country and start from nothing! It's hard not to feel spoiled and unworthy much of the time, as well as long for some kind of "Fight Club"-like experience that would truly test one's mettle. My only aversion to this kind of thinking is that any talk of a "hard, tough, brutal youth" reminds me of Hitler's philosophies.

I think Thomas Jefferson said something like, I'm a soldier so my son can be a farmer so his son can be a businessman or lawyer (something to that effect). While we may have it easier than our ancestors, how do we really know that our great grandfathers or grandfathers didn't want that for us. I also think that feminization of society is the wrong terminology (Stallone clarifies it) as much as the modernization of society. We don't work in coal mines and on farms because of the advancements in technology and availabilty of higher education. My dad used a slide rule for what computers do now for a lot of his business career and now we have a lot of machines and computers that do a lot for us. As for rites of passage, I played football in high school and took a lot of punishment as well as giving some out, on a social level I've drank hard and had some luck with the ladies, hell, I've even been robbed at gun point and pistol whipped but am I more of a man becuase of it? I'm not sure. I don't know if bruises make the man but I don't think we should all be metrosexuals either. I don't believe you have to be bearded lumberjacks or run with the bulls or climb everest just to prove you're a man. Maybe there is a happy medium where, probably, a lot of us lie. You're probably missing something else in life and using these rights of passage to fill some kind of psychological void. It's like trying to plot out the future of your life in terms of being a husband and or father by going to a singles bar. It just isn't there.

Sly was very prolific in the 80's in terms of creating projects for himself. The Poe script was started in late 70's - and went through several drafts in 80's. Sly first mentioned the Poe project on the Dinah Shore show when he was promoting Rocky II in June of 1979. He described himself tongue in cheek as saying "Yo, Poe"...on Dinah's couch with a lot of laughter. If i remember, Sly was in between an electic guest which included Bill Shatner, Howard COsell and Billy Carter?? - You had to be there as Sly charmed the pants off Dinah Shore and her audience. I think Sly even did a comedy bit with Howard Cosell introducing some of the clips to Rocky II. Cosell said something like "Apollo Creed is being extremely truclent (the old Cassius clay line).." Sly also was interested in playing Superman in late 70's while also trying to greenlight starring and directing the Poe project. I think the great thing about stallone is the greatness to do mainstream and independent and niche projects. Sly has wanted to do Vincent Van Gogh project with his brother Frank for a number of years. Kirk Douglas played Van Gogh in 50's but Sly wants to go deeper and darker. Also - Sly was interested in a few times in making a project about the killing of Tupac and Biggie Smalls. A dream project for Stallone would be to do a biography of Steve Reeves, the original Hercules.

Kevin Smith got involved with AICN just to insult people. Was it funny? Sure, but in the end it was a totally empty experience. Whereas Sly talks to us, reads the comments and responds even after the fact. Sly is interesting, he's funny and he wants to tell us about what he's experienced. Smith apparently has very little of value to say to this audience. And I doubt Smith could approach the value of Sly's contributions even if he tried.

I guess Fight Club did ultimately take the piss out of this way of thinking, where the disenchanted young men start out fulfilling their need for "tough, brutal youth" and end up as fascist/nihilistic morons. But #1Zero makes a good point... maybe we're ungrateful that much of the suffering has already been done on our behalf. If our grandfathers were here today, at our age, they could probably kick the shit out of us, but more likely they'd envy our existential (or latte) angst over the hardships they suffered. On the other hand, I do feel guilty that future generations will know fewer people who suffered for their freedom. I could go to some bar right now and find an old dude who'll tell me his war stories (well, it's France so it's more likely to be a student riot story) but I pity the young lad in 2056 whose grandfather's most inspiring tale is how he built a firewall for the Bank of England. I'm sure this is a psychological void - but I think it's a common one, and I'd like to know how to fill it with something other than organised underground bare-knuckle fighting. Maybe it will pass with age, I don't know. It's insane to revere suffering. But what do we learn about ourselves when our toughest decisions involve brand names, or interest rates?

I don't think toughness need be merely physical. You don't need to send your kid to go be a lumberjack. It's about scratching and clawing and fighting for what you deserve, period. It can be in anything. It can be in a boxing ring or it can be in an office building or it can be at a University. It's about paying your dues, getting your ass kicked (FIGURATIVELY), and moving foward. It's about building endurance and stamina, mentality if not physically. There's too much pissing and moaning these days. Kid doesnt get a car, not just a car but a one thats THIS COLOR, when they turn 16 and they act like the world is against them. They grow up and as adults its exactly the same. Piss and moan. Piss and moan. This person did this % less work than I did, thats UNFAIR! This person's cubicle is ____ square inches larger than mine, that's UNFAIR! It's the "cry to mommy" mentality that I think Sly was referring to. It's about shutting your ass up and getting to WORK. Whether its lumberjacking or accounting, it's about starting at the bottom and fighting and clawing your way out.

That's exactly why I've come to admire Stallone over the course of these Q&As. My prior image of him was some lug who played genocidal maniacs in daft action movies. Now my opinion has completely reversed. Alright, the guy can throw a punch and chase psychos through restaurants, but he's also built his career up from nothing by sheer force of will. It's easy to scoff at superstars whose regular paycheck exceeds the gross national product of Japan, but he started out with nothing and worked hard to get where he is today. So one needs to search it out. Some people head to the military for that. Fine, if that is what you desire. For me, after my nail polishing and my eyebrow waxing, I head to the mountains or the sea. This is were I find my lions and spears. Example, 2 months into my pacific crossing on a tall ship, think master and commander(yeah they look big but try spending two months on one with claustrophobia) anyways two months into the crossing I remember the sudden squal we hit with water spounts that we had to dodge, 50-65 m/hr winds, giant walls of water crashing over the ship and we would have about 2 hrs of sleep and have to be up climbing the rigging and sailing the ship. At one point after coming back to the deck from aloft a wall of water crashed over the area in which I was standing throwing me to the other side of the ship with the only thing catching me from being a man overboard were the lines for the sails. When I crashed back to the deck my knee was slashed and blood was gushing out. Due to the sudden threat of a water spout I had to get right up and help steer the ship. Or the two times I had to carry 80pounds of gear on my back in the new mexico dessert for 12 days. The reason why I am mentioning all this is that we have many oppurtunities to find out lions and spears, but I just feel everyone has become so luthargic that the "pussy" world is creeping in on us and we are just sitting by letting it happen. We are all becoming obese and lazy. Just get up of your ass and find your spear.

I agree on both fronts. I agree with the guy who said that every guy should be able to defend himself to some degree, stay in shape, and not be some helpless weakling. But I also agree that the association of man with muscles and aggression and "who can kick who's ass" is not really as relevant anymore in today's society. Most of my friends who spend their lives at the gym getting beefed up have never been in a "real" fight in their lives. Never needed to. They work out more for physical fitness and yes, looks. In today's civilized world the value of big muscles isn't what it used to be. You'd make more money and live a better life as a 90 pound computer programming nerd.

is that of The DEER HUNTER. My fiance father is a hunter and ex Vitnam drafty who fought as a grunt in the jungles. His life mirrors that of Robert DeNiro In THE DEER HUNTER. Before he went to war he was a majestic hunter in upstate NY, then afterwards he could never shoot a deer again. Oh he went hunting, but could never pull the trigger. Then he became a NYC fireman. Fortuntaly just a month before Sept 11 he fell down a fire excape in a burning builind and had to have severe surgury. This prevented him from going into the towers. Most of his friends died in the attacks. He was going to funurals for a year. Now that is someone who has fought with spears and lions.

Helping those that are in need of help whether they are friend, stranger or foe. Choosing to walk a path of peace instead of being suckered into a cheap fight, or conversely being the cause of a cheap fight. Having a code of honor (and having the maturity and experience to know what real honor is) and not betraying that code no matter the temptation to do so. Doing things out of kindness without prompting even if it means some sacrifice from you. Etc, etc. There are people who are incredibly strong and are as tough as nails but who have no honor and who I wouldn’t call a Real Man even though they could punch a hole in me with their thumb. There are also people who aren’t the biggest or the strongest but who could easily serve as a role model for anyone because they know the difference between right and wrong and they know what to do in either situation.

I think that is a great point. When I was pointing out what I have done to I guess have my "spears and lions" I was not pointing out physical strength, but mental strength to overcome a huge obstical that I thought I could not overcome. Many times I wanted to give up during those thing, but I kept on pushing my self. There were times when I was almost mad with insanity on the ship with my claustropbia, so what did I do, I got up and got some ships blankets for the my shivering crews memebers on deck. I wish I saw more stuff like that. Last week was perfect. I was at a light here in Eugene Oregon when I saw someone come out of a resturant with a bag full of just ordered food for himself. As I was pulling away I saw him stop, think, and then give the entire bag to the homeless man on the corner. Now that is a man. Wish I could have the guts to do something like that

Back in the day, when "JUDGE DREDD" was playing at theatres on opening weekend, I had gone to see it with friends (also comic book fans). And I believe it was that VERY NEXT DAY (or possibly that Sunday) that my brother was practically begging me to go see it with him (so that he wouldn't have to go "alone"). And despite that I HAD JUST SEEN THE MOVIE.... and since nobody else was going to see it with him, I relented. So anyway, as we traveled in his car on the way to the theatre, ...as we were joking around in that playful kind of aggrivating mode that sibblings sometimes share in conversation, I respond to my brother in a slightly deeper, slurred manner of speech, saying "I knew you'd say that." I didn't want to make it obvious that I was attempting to do Sly's voice... so I only hinted at it, but just barely. And my brother would say something back and I'd repeat myself, "I knew you'd say that." And as we continued our brotherly chat, I repeatedly responded by saying "I knew you'd say that" enough times to make myself (more) annoying. After enough times, my brother told me to "quit that" ...and it eventually turned into a punch on the arm before I stopped. But he was smart enough to figure it out, asking, "What?! Does Stallone say that in the movie or somethng?" And I was like... "No." (Imagine an Academy Award worthy reaction, with the right amount of voice inflection.) And then my brother says, "...Yeah, I bet." So, finally, we're in the darkened theatre when, as scheduled, Judge Dredd (Stallone) delivers the line, "I knew you'd say that." It's a wonder my brother didn't throw his neck out when he delivered me that trademark look of his. And I just smiled as he gave me that bit of a growl. And before long, on cue, Judge Dredd delivers the line, again. "Hey!" my brother nearly shouts, as he shoots me another glare. And I'm chuckling on the outside... but on the inside, I'm laughing my ass off. And as you might guess, when Judge Dredd says it again, I get punched... in that brotherly, you-really-got-me kind of way (but with something extra). --Thanks, Stallone, for bringing us great joy over the years, ...punches and all.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to refer to any particular Tber in my post. I was more just making a general comment. I think what you’ve done is quite accomplished and admirable. Generally speaking, we all make choices every day sometimes without even realizing it. For some matters, we might be on auto-pilot and make choices without thinking and for other choices we might dwell on the issue for a long time before we do anything about it. But I think it’s the sum of all the choices we make – big and small – that shape and define who we are. And it’s the culmination of all the learning and growing from our choices from physical, mental, emotional etc experiences that build us into better (or worse as the case may be) people. If we see someone trip and fall, is the first instinct to laugh or to help. If someone makes an insulting comment, do we ignore it and go on with life or respond in kind because of our ego/hubris. If we see an injustice at work or school do we stay silent or do we speak up. When faced against hardship and overwhelming odds for an all important situation (be it a physical, mental, social, life or death etc situation) do we get tough and push forward or do we crumble and fall. Sometimes there aren’t easy or even “right” answers to these choices but I think the decisions and actions we take define who we are as people/men. So I think it’s less about how strong (physically, mentally, emotionally, morals/values) we might be but rather how and when we choose to use what strengths we have and what we learn from the experience that’s important. Compared to the generations (circa 1930’s-1950’s) who had nothing and broke their backs to create the modern world, I do think that we have gotten progressively “soft/complacent” and tend to chose to take the “easy” path, we haven’t really taken on the challenges that build character and values and we tend to place far too much emphasis on the trivial things that (when you really think about it) don’t really matter. Just my opinion though

It's early and I'm tired. Basically, I'm just saying that bragging about how tough you are online is the height of stupidity. No one knows anybody else here. from people like Veritasses and antonphd. I agree with both of their previous posts, especially the part about men remaining boys for far longer than they should. It's true, it's almost an intangible thing that one can just recognize immediately but may not be able to put into words. Tom Cruise still behaves like a boy, no doubt about it. It's a matter of wanting what you want when you want it and not having the patience, understanding, and lack of ego that comes with experiences that you've learned from. Because one can have a lot of experience yet still learn nothing from it. Stallone is a man because he's able to stand outside of himself and see how others view both himself and the situations he's been in. When you are able to truly put yourself in other people's shoes and do it in most situations when it comes to making decisions, I believe you have overcome one of the biggest hurdles it takes to truly become a man. It's a very difficult balance of not giving a shit what other people think and staying true to yourself, as Stallone said, and also caring for others and being able to put your own ego aside or abandon the worst parts of it altogether. The two may seem like they're at complete odds with one another, but I think those who understand how it works know that they're really not. Here's an example of overgrown 'boys' in today's american society. Yesterday, when I was Christmas shopping, this big dude that looked to be in his early 30's was walking through the CHILDREN'S section of Macy's behind my girlfriend and I. Here's what I overheard from that conversation - "Dude... yeah, you're taking out that hairdressa? (I live in NJ) I'm kind of on the fence right now, half in single territory... yeah. (goes on and on) Ok, well, have fun banging the hell outta that chick!" That, my friends, is a boy. Likewise, I was at a wedding recently, and was seated at a table with a lot of my girlfriend's old guy friends from high school. They're all stock brokers and they're all reciting lines from Goodfellas and Entourage (not that there's anything wrong with those, I like them both) and talking about the fight they got into at some bar in the city a few weeks back. I looked at my girlfriend, laughing, and said, "What is this, mean tree-lined streets?" cause I know they all grew up in the suburbs where she is from. They're all wannabe tough guys, all in their late 20's, early 30's who've grown up with silver spoons in their mouths and I don't know why they can't just be what they are and stop trying to prove how tough they are when there's an outsider in their midst. I actually grew up in Jersey City, NJ, on the wrong side of the tracks and I don't act like that. I know where I'm from, but I don't try to talk like I'm from the Sopranos. It's just entertainment. It has its place, but it's not reality. I think that others were getting at this when they said that men of this generation look to movies for their role models of manhood and want to be that tough, because they know they never will be. The only truly tough person I've ever known was my grandfather. He worked as a construction foreman his whole life, never, ever entertained the idea of cheating on my grandmother, he always did right by his kids and his grandkids, and he never opened his mouth unless he felt he had something important to say. And he never did it for the benefit of others, or so they'd think he was 'tough' or smart or anything other than what he knew he was - a man. He fought in WWII as part of a team that made sure Nazi anti-aircraft guns were destroyed or inoperable. He boxed in his late teens and early 20's, just before he became part of the second wave of soldiers to hit Normandy. One time, he was fixing my aunt's front stairs with all his tools behind him. Some random guy walking by stole his circular saw as he was hammering away at something and he didn't notice until he turned around to use it. He got in his truck and rode around the area looking for the guy. Sure enough, he finds him, pulling up next to him then getting out with a 2x4 in his hands. He hit the guy in the head with it, took back his saw and told him, "If I ever see you around here again, I'm going to cut you up with this saw and feed you to my dog." He was 68 years old at the time. And the point is, I know he didn't do this to be tough or to seem cool or anything like that. That was that generation. That's just how they were. I actually can't believe that he could be that barbaric and it's pretty frightening considering how sweet he always was to my mother and my sister and I. It's a type of toughness that I don't think anyone (recent generations at least) truly possesses anymore, not in that 'matter-of-fact' way at least. Where it does exist, it's more likely as a symptom of insanity. I'm still in awe of his ability to be fair and decent and yet, when the shit hit the fan or something pissed him off, he could be as tough as nails in a way that seemed almost ignorant of consequences. When you've known someone like that, a bunch of 'boiler room' wannabes, the type of faux tough guy that I can't stand for the life of me and has become prevalent in today's society, just seem like a gnat trying to pretend it's a dragonfly.

This is totally random but the fact that Kevin Smith is so insecure that he made almost an entire movie "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" in order to make fun of internet movie fans is really sad. I enjoy his work for the most part, and think he is a funny/intelligent guy, but he needs to get over himself and stop trying to respond to every faceless internet critic. Shit is lame. Also, I don't understand why die-hard sports fans who have every players stats memorized are considered men while die-hard movie fans are considered geeks. What's so manly about being an overweight, beer-drinking slug who lives vicariously through pro-athletes because he misses his childhood when he could actually PLAY sports? That's a double standard that pisses me off to no end. Of course, we're all dealing with stereotypes here to make our points but I think these issues still have validity. One final thing, I don't care how big you are, how many punches you think you can take, how well versed you are in martial artists or any other such qualification. A so-called scrawny weakling can still land an errant punch to your throat during a fight. I don't give a fuck who you are, you're going down. Pre-streetfight predictions are, for the most part, entirely irrelevant. Even the softest punk can hit you with a lucky shot and knock you on your ass. Every fight is like playing russian roulette, thats why you very rarely see one-on-one brawls anymore. There's too much damn self-loathing on this site. Be content to enjoy discussing movies. Ever since Rocky, Sylvester Stallone has been a super famous person. Around the world even if a person has never watched any of his movies, they know who he is and know his name. Some think he is a bad actor and makes bad movies. Others think he's underrated as an actor. Others don't care one way or another and don't think about it. But let's make a stand here, let's draw a line on the sand on this Talkback right now. Everyone, but everyone can agree he gave an incredible performance in Cop Land, a very underrated movie. That performance proves that Sly is a good actor and can act. No bad actor can give that performance. Only an actor with talent can give the best performance in a movie with Robert Deniro, Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, Robert Patrick, etc. I will always say he was robbed of some awards right there. The more I watch the film, the more I feel that way. Anyone else wanna share their feelings about that performance? And with that...the rest is silence.

It touches on all the core themes: growing up, facing himself and making hard choices, being honorable and loyal, staying true to himself, humility/asking for help, toeing the line and chosing to take on the challenges of the difficult path, striving against the odds and going all out no matter what the cost etc. It's not a movie so much about the sport of boxing as it is about all these themes which is probably why it appeals the most and has endured as a classic for so long.

It's been a while since I've seen the movie so I vaguely remember that scene. My ailing memory aside, that's a good point. You can't write what you don't know about. It takes a man who knows something about being a Man to write a screenplay like Rocky (and First Blood too). It's a testament to Stallone's character for being able to write such a remarkable screenplay way back then.

Excellent post. My grandfather was a NYC fireman in the 1930's and 1940's and my dad's stepfather was a U.S. Army infantryman during WWII. My dad's uncles consisted of two Marines and one B-17 co-pilot. Each and every one of them was tougher than a two-dollar steak and wouldn't have hestitated to physically destroy anyone who mistreated them or their families -- which brings me to the other side of their characters, namely their intense love and devotion to said families and general, all-round decency when it came to life in general. My dad was much the same way, although as a result of growing up in an enormously tough neighborhood. I guess that makes me the poster boy for the third-generation wuss-out.... sigh...

I like these games (they are fun!), but given what we're talking about here in this TB, I have to say that it strikes me as perverse that guys in their 30s are playing a game that depicts some horrific and real circumstances our grandfathers dealt with decades ago. Sure, they try to depict it realistically, but is there a portion of the game that shows an amputee soldier learning how to walk again, or a soldier coming home and feeling "shell-shocked" for the remainder of his life? Do you think the average soldier from WWII could have fathomed that generations later kids would be re-enacting those days in the warm, toasty confines of home on plasma screen televisions? Vastly unoriginal. Haven't we fought every single WWII battle there was to fight by now? People have a very strong sense nostalgia for that era, even if they haven't lived to see it. Truth is, it was a horrific psyche shattering event. I like my games (Zelda) as far removed from reality as possible--isn't that the whole point in the first place? If I want to learn more about the blitzkreig (and I don't) I'll flip on the History Channel for my 24/7 coverage of the nazis war machine in action, thank you very much. Mike Tyson's Punch Out is also the best game ever made. Just thought you should all know.

The interview on RAW is war was horrible. They didn't even show the "right" clips they were given. They were supposed to show the full clips of the training montage, the AJ Benza clip in Adrian's restaurant, and the full movie trailer and not the edited version. That was awful. We were disappointed in the interview conducted by the KING. Horrible - horrible -trite questions. we were told that the KING would ask interesting questions. It was horrible and Sly was not happy although as usual he was gracious. After Sly went out of his way to induct Hulk Hogan into the WWE Hall of Fame - the least that the organziation could have done is treated Sly with respect in stead of screwing him and forgetting to show even the minimum clips. Vince needs to get his organization right George Bush's moranic nephew (Billy Bush) is Tim Russert compared to the KING. We should have had Harry conduct the interview.

And then there is my mother's dad, who is still around at 86. Here is a guy who: watched his oldest brother get caught in the Bataan Death March and die after some 3 years of hell over there, watched his father age by 20 years almost overnite when that happened, did a tour in the navy in '45 himself, got married at 20, had 7 kids, still married to Gram some 66 years lator. Owns a 160 acre farm in Maine. Had 40 head of cattle(dairy), 100 sheep, bought and kept running for some 50 years the same old narrow-front John Deere, Oliver crawlers, haybailers and mowing machines. You can't find the parts for these things now. Real decent Ted Williams/James Garner kinda looking type guy. Solid as a rock, one of those be a part of the local community/church/boards type guy. Watched his kids move out and had to sell the cows because when your help leaves, the cows who already owned you day and night just got yer mortgage too. Took to the woods in his 50s, logging w/ a skidder and chainsaw etc off in the maine woods all year long many times by himself. Planted over 3 million trees in the fields through the years, believe me I helped out folks and we could do 12,000 saplings in a day. You think it's easy trust me it ain't. Took me and my family in when our father ruined his life and that of our mother's. We were raised on his farm while he was in his 50s and 60's. He's as straight forward and decent and inwardly tough an individual as I've ever known. Trust me when I say this, two generations down, at 40, you couldn't really compare what me and my immed. generation of sibs and cousins have been thru compared to him and his. Shit he still is working as a part time carpenter on his little projects and had the family build him a garage/out-building just because. You know where I'm going w/ this? Look at what The PaZooZ and SK there said. I know of whom they speak about, because it's quite clear my family has had those kinds of 'Greatest Generation types' in-house, as it were. The world is a different place, and like it or not, it's lost something because of it.

Sly was Vin Scully's neighbor. Vin is a nice man on TV but as a neighbor - he is a bigger pain in the ass than George Washington Duke and Buddy from Rocky I. You know the expression - "Same people hate for no reason". Will as Vince from Chez Ravine would say..."Pull up a chair....and let me tell you a story" And believe me - Vin was every bit of a pain in the butt as Paulie could be. Vinnie is a habitual litigator. While Sly was recovering from his bruised heart during the Rocky IV filming - Vince sued Sly for 7 million dollars. At the end of the day after seven years of litigation- Vince received 69,000 dollars - he paid more in his legal fees just to harass Sly. Sly even tried to talk to TOmmy Lasorda aka Tommy Lasagna to ask Vinnie to chill. Although tempted - Sly never made a call to Frank Sinatra. One call - and all of Vin Scully's litigation goes away. But - Sly waited because he needed Frankie's help to greenlight Rocky V in the late 80's after Over the Top and Tango and Cash tanked.

ROnald Reagan was a movie buff. Although used as political propoganda - Reagan's favorite Sly movie was neither Rambo II or Rocky. That was used by his henchmen to further political means. I think Reagan liked First Blood for the sheer adrenaline rush (I mean Reagan worked out every day doing bench presses and curls after the assasination so you know he tell had kind of manly side). I mean compared to George Bush - whose idea of exercise was playing horeshoes with his rich wasp friends. I wish saw George Bush throw a horseshoe and he looked like freaking Katherine Hepburne playing lawn cricket. Maureen Reagan, Reagan's oldest daugther now deceased, said that her father adored the 1978 film "Paradise Alley". Apparently in his later years before Alzeimer's robbed him of his mind, he had a worn VHS copy of Paradise Alley that whe would play over and over again at Rancho Cielo. I guess his favorite character was Kid Salami and he enjoyed the character's wresting ability and overall child-like nature. Reagan was fond of animals and he enjoyed the monkey and the Pet bird in the movie. In one of her last interviews - Maureen Reagan said she watched Paradise Alley with the President and that he cried during the scene where the Wrestler , Old Glory, committs suicide after losing the match to Kid Salami. It was one of the few tims she remembers him crying. One can't help but feel that Reagan saw himself in the loneliness and hopelessness that Old Glory felt - so sad. I wonder if Reagan continued to watch Paradise Alley in the final days of his life.... The other Stallone flick he liked was FIST since Reagan was a union man. I never did this but i think the Reagan library has an archive of all of Reagan's personal VHS tapes in his collection and the Stallone films are the only ones he has after the year 1965. Pretty impressive.

I have one question for you, since you seem to be "in the know" on what Sly's been up to lately: Was Sly surprised by the huge lovefest he's been given here at AICN? The man deserves all of our respect, but beyond respect, a lot of us genuinely like the guy. I was a little nervous about how the TBers would react to Sly in the beginning, but his self-depricating sense of humor and his genuine interest in our questions won us over from the start. I hope he enjoyed he experience too. And thank you for answering our follow-ups as well. Merry Christmas.

I'm an Italian woman, and I would tkanks Mr. Stallone for saying HE IS A 100% ITALIAN MAN. I love him very much and I saw all his Rocky's movies maybe 10 times!!!Bye Bye!!
