For all those people hating on Peter Jackson and claiming that he's a "greedy, money-grubbing hack", I present to you "Shrek The Third". Now, put that in your PJ hate-pipe and smoke it.

Classic Warners shorts whose pop-culture references still work for the story despite the best part of century having lapsed is NOTHING like Shrek's storyline or character traits being BASED on them to the degree that they will be undecipherable in a few years. "The Muffin Man"? Not only is it ridiculously myopic to have a reference that is so intrisically American (yes Brits and Aussies 'get it') and excludes most of the rest of the world from understanding it, but it's a TV ad to boot! So not only are the characters more continuously self aware than say a LT character who breaks the wall as a punchline, but they know radio and tv ads, not just pop culture touchstones (simultaneously undoing the 'truth' of their own reality). This is why Massawyrm's blasting of Happy Feet for using old standards that back the tone or characters rather than current pop hits was moronic. You'll notice that when Pixar uses a reference it will always work in service to the story even if you don't get the joke on the other 'pop' level. They have their cake and eat it too. I can't remember everything about that first film but why the fuck was Robin french? Because their accents are funny? Doctor Sin your post was funnier than the actual film, with the exception of the appropriate "Bite Me". I'm sorry you've been misunderstanding Looney Tunes stuff for that long, and nice way to conveniently ignore Mosquito. One voice, "Fact", eh? Even the directors admitted in the commentary they didn't have a storytelling reason for some of that stuff. And the same beautiful message tired patronising Disney films had been giving us for the last couple of decades. I'm SICK of don't judge a book by it's cover! Don't even get me started on the ham-fisted religious stuff they shoehorned in there! But my one concession to you is that you're right that belly laughs are good - we shouldn't really EXPECT Shrek to be great when most live-action films aren't so yeah sometimes a bit of a laugh is enough. Just don't do the talkbacker thing and try to defend it as actual good filmmaking. I liked 2 a little more but how long does the supposedly badass Puss take to turn? Five minutes? WTF?

You do have a point about the film nerd cliché though, I'll give you that.

P.S. Shogun - If Eddie uses the damn Tic-tac joke again I'm gonna slap him. Really. As for Smashmouth, there's no reason needed to slap them.
