Firefly; Wonderfalls; the Inside. although i thought some of the stuff he did on Angel and Wonderfalls was a little twee, this guy has written some of the best hours of television i've ever seen (c.f. Firefly's 'Out of Gas'). he also seems to have the worst luck ever in terms of having his shows picked up beyond the 13 episode mark. hopefully Fillion + Drive will outride the curse of the Minear.
OR Minear for that matter.

Here's what Nathan said in his new blog on Myspace. The pieces seem to fit. "YES- I have a new job on television. Not gonna say what, just yet. But I'll be working with someone I've worked with before and you all love him. Don't ask. You will, but don't. All will be revealed!" I asked anyway. I'm just pushy like that. Livin on the ragged adge!

Ignoring the quality (or lack thereof) of Firefly, it had its shot. Two shots actually, including the movie, and they both missed. At the end of the day if the show had ratings, it wouldn't have been cancelled. If the movie did decent box office, there would be sequels. Both of them failed. I have seen people say "If this was at X Network other than FOX it would have been a hit." Absolutely not true. If it had been at UPN or the WB, sure it would have done well, but not at any of the big ones. Joss Whedon has a unique writing style that some love and some hate, but it is definately a niche audience. Putting it on a larger network meant that it had to perform better than it did. For the record I saw Serenity and thought it was okay. I never did see Firefly as a series, and maybe Serenity would have been more enjoyable if I had any emotional investment in the characters. As far as the actor "trusting FOX", what world do you guys live in? When you're an established track record who can pick and choose your projects you can opt not to work with a particular network. Seinfeld can do this, Cosby can do this, an actor from a show that lasted less than a dozen episodes can't.
Sure, it's good news...

SUCKED. It SUCKED. It was AWFUL. Fox did Minear a favor by losing it as quickly and painlessly as possible. I loved Firefly and Wonderfalls and Angel and I'm looking forward to this one. But I cringe when I hear The Inside being an example of Minear getting screwed over by Fox. The show was wretched. I ain't laying the blame all on Minear, though, cuz he was pretty much stuck with that lifeless mannequinn of a lead and probably did what he could with what he was given to work with, but PLEASE...let's just pretend it never happened.
I predict 6 episods will air...

out of 13. the rest go to dvd. an online petition will be started to save the show, it will be futile and a bunch of whinny fans will say fox sucks and never watch anyhing on fox again. That is, until another member of the Firefly "family" gets a show on Fox. Matter of fact, why don't we save some time and start that "Save Drive" petition right now?

Firefly was simply one of the best shows on TV. EVER! The cast was PERFECT, and the acting was SUPERB, and the scripts were GREAT. There was so much potential there with the backstories (River) and what some characters might be hiding in their past(Book). It's a damn shame it was not allowed a chance to catch on with the masses. If only FOX had shown it in order (seems like the obvious thing to do right? wrong, let's throw darts at a board to decide what order to show episodes in. DUH! Imagine coming into LOST at episode TWO, and then not getting to see the pilot until the very end, AFTER it has already been cancelled). The X-Files didn't catch on immediately, and it was actually shown in order, AND not pre-empted by sports every other week. Imagine if they'd killed it after 11 episodes. I said all that to say this: if you haven't seen it, then quit dissing it and go buy it. You won't be sorry. And the myspace blog from Fillion is legit, and a great read BTW. He really cares about his fans.

I'm sorry but Nathan Fillion making a show NOT FIREFLY RELATED with a former writer is NOT a Firefly reunion. I am a browncoat, and while Ive been enjoying watching Firefly be rebroadcast in HD on Universal HD, it pains me every episode knowing that im that much closer to the end of the series. This was very mean Harry, thats like me saying, HEY HARRY, JENNIFER CONNOLY IS NAKED IN YOUR BEDROOM WITH DONUTS, oh I mean to say, she is naked on the TV, and she is naked on the inside a donut costume. Not the same Harry, not the same. Fernwick

Then admit they've never seen it. Thanks for playing, mjbok1. Unfortunately, Serenity did not do a good enough job reflecting the fun parts of the series, but it made a decent movie on its own. Joss basically knew he had one chance to finish telling his story, so he threw it all out there on the screen at once. The good news for actual fans is that there will be another Serenity graphic novel from Dark Horse next year, though I don't know if it will be set during the series or after the movie. Part of me wants to see the story continue, but part of me wants to see more Wash and Book. Of course, there's always flashbacks. Maybe they can continue my fantasy story about how Book used to be an operative and trained the Operative from the movie. And the new Operative returns with information about Book. Retcon heaven, but who cares as long as it's a good story. With Minear, the Inside wasn't his best but I actually was really interested in those characters (esp. Coyote's, but loved Baldwin's and the chick from Wonderfalls), which is saying something, since I generally don't like procedurals. At this point, I'd watch anything Minear or Fillion do, especially if it's together.
Inside was improving, but, it didn't hold a candle to..

Greenwalt's "Miracles". Goddamn was that a good show, and I still think the last episode that aired, "Hand of God" is one of the top 10 hour long episodes of television I've seen. That show was cancelled due to Iraq war pre-emptions. If the war wasn't going on, I'm pretty sure the show still would be.

I would have loved to see that show develop (but again, not as much as Firefly). And the interviews with Hatem on the DVD made him seem like a pretty cool, creative guy who deserved a better shot. But if Miracles hadn't tanked, maybe we wouldn't have Mr. Ulrich in the brilliance that is Jericho (cough). I also loved Minear's plan for season 2 and 3 of Wonderfalls with Jaye in an institution. Great stuff.

I've seen every ep of FIREFLY as well as SERENITY, and though I count myself a fan, I'd never want to be considered one of those smug, cultish, psychotic freaks known as "Browncoats" -- y'know, the ones who spammed messageboards for the better part of a year and sent death threats to critics. Anyway, mjbok1 is absolutely right. Whedone's shows are all niche-oriented, non-mainstream fare. In the case of FIREFLY, even moreso, as it was little more than COWBOY BEBOP minues the cool style, with a dash of BLAKE'S 7 tossed in as well. One of the best shows ever? Not at all. It's not even the best show created by Whedon, nor the second best. It was watchable, derivative scifi that failed to find much of an audience in either incarnation. And BATTLESTAR GALACTICA kicks its ass six ways to Sunday -- something that Whedon himself also agrees with.
Sorry Messiah...

Nathan Fillion & Firefly cast
by buffywrestling
Dec 14th, 2006

I would just like to mention that some cast and crew recently showed up to a hotel bar to sign autographs and mingle with guests who were staying there after a convention for Firefly folded. Nathan, Adam Baldwin, Alan Tudyk, Ron Glass, Morena and a lot more special guests - reviews can be found if you look for them. I think this is a real reason why Firefly is so respected and personal for some. How many actors would go out of their way and out of their busy schedule to do such a thing? It blows my mind, really. And it makes you want to support them in all of their endevors, not just the failed ones.

i personaly think this one may actually take off for Minear. I haven't seen the pilot, but from what I've heard it may be the most accessible show he has ever done. Ok , INSIDE was a cop show, but there's a sea of cop shows out there and Fox didn't exactly promote the shit out of it.

Nathan Fillion is great, but . . . I'm not so sure about this show. Hasn't it already been done before? And what's with his accent? Does anyone else think he sounds southern? I thought he was from Canada. Does anyone else hear it- cause I've asked three people now who don't hear an accent.

Joss says BSG is the best show on right now. Let's not push it. I don't think he'd say it kicks his own show's ass. Why the fuck do people always have to put these shows in competition? They couldn't be more different. buffywrestling's point is well taken. I love BSG but I was 'in love' with Firefly. While I appreciate the drama of BSG, there's not a single one of those characters I would want to hang out with (I don't know about the actors - they're probably cool). Whereas the crew of Serenity felt like family, the kind of people you want watching your back, and the kind you want to share a meal and stories with. Firefly will always be legend almost as much for what it could have achieved than for what it did. If brilliance like 'Out of Gas' and 'Objects in Space' could happen in the first half of the first season, what could have come later? And it only 'failed' to find an audience because Fox screwed it, plain and simple. We all know the story - episodes out of order, pre-empted eps, bad time period. Fox is NOT Scifi channel. They would have screwed BSG, too (good luck, Tim). And as much as I'd love to see Nathan in Preacher, I think the character's too similar to Mal. I favor Jeremy Sisto, who someone mentioned last week. And on the ending of Angel, I think we will see what happens someday, but probably in comic form, because Boreanaz is too full of himself to go back to the role that made him.
I think Boreanaz said he'd play Angel in a cinema movie
