How shocking that any politican should try to score political points by trying to link themselves to a cultural icon. But now that I think of it, a "John McClane wouldn't vote for this Motherfucker" slogan could be pretty cool.

One of my best friends was waiting in line to go through security on her way out of LAX. She dropped her shawl, then bent over to pick it up only to find that someone behind her had already done so. You guessed it, it was Sly. He handed it to her and she emailed me later to explain why she was going to become a Rocky Balboa evangelist. I know it doesn't seem like much, but it seems gallant gestures like that after a long-haul flight can make a girl's day. About two years ago I was in LA promoting something at the NBC TCA junket. Sly was there promoting season 1 of the Contender. I was heading in as he was heading out. The publicist saw the look on my face and asked if I'd like to meet him. I was embarrassed but didn't want to miss out. She whispered in his publicist's ear, who came over and introduced us. He was very gracious but I just stood there like a twat trying to think of something good to say. After some stuttered compliment from me, taken with good humor, Sly was whisked away by his guy. Memorable for me, for him not so much... Met Sugar Ray too. It was a good night.

Add my voice to those saying that Stallone's frank and great answers to all these questions is one of the greatest retrospectives you can imagine. I was already excited to see "Rocky Balboa" and when I did see it last night (at the AVCO here in L.A.), it was a lot of fun, made moreso by being on a Stallone kick and getting to see him host a Q&A there. The movie is really great, as many have said, but going from Stallone's performance on screen to Stallone in the flesh is such a contrast that it makes you that much more impressed by what he does in the film. That, and he can obviously still write like hell.

Dear Sly, thank you for calling me puss-nuts. It is a moment I will always treasure. And thanks, Knowles, for selecting my question. The other question I had was -- back in the eighties, there was a who's who in GI Joe comic put out by Marvel. Rocky Balboa was listed as being on the Gi Joe team, then this whole thing ws retracted the next month. Whose amazingly bananas idea was this, who nixed it and what was the original concept? And does anybody else remember this, or I have just gone around the bend? Thank you. See you in Hell.

by coolguyaaron
Dec 13th, 2006
09:33:43 PM
He's talking about who has it tougher, not who would win in a fight. A mixed martial artist may beat a pure boxer. But when it comes down to the amount of punishment a boxer takes in a typical fight versus the much shorter UFC bouts, or the number of fights a boxer needed to endure before getting a real shot, there's no question which sport is "tougher".

Joint lock submission holds are extremely painful but the pain subsides very quickly once the lock/hold is released (which is why in Aikido and Ju Jitsu, these techniques can be practiced over and over). Being knocked out by a “sleeper hold” is scary and potentially dangerous but it’s not painful per-se. Strikes in the UFC might do more damage because of the type of glove used, the different strikes that are possible (knees, elbows etc) and because the recipient of the blows might be pinned on his back but this is why the UFC fights are likely to end much more quickly then in a boxing match with far fewer blows delivered. Boxers have to endure hundreds of blows to the body and head for a very long period of time (3 minutes per round times 8, 10, 12 or 15 rounds vs (I think) 5 minute rounds times 3 rounds for UFC). The boxer has to take a very different type of long term, sustained punishment to the body and is thus (arguably) tougher. The UFC fighter will beat the boxer most of the time but the boxer probably has to be “tougher” in order to endure that type of constant punishment to his body and brain for the duration of his career. And this is probably even more so back in the days of Marciano and Sugar Ray Robinson which is what Stallone was referring to.

There is so much I hate about Hollywood, but Stallone is so funny and genuine. Plus his rags-to-riches stories of being a starving actor are inspiring. I wonder if Stallone ever met or had dealings with this icon of film toughness. As an individual, Bronson was kind of the anti-Stallone, in that he was very reserved, had no interaction with fans, and on sets mostly hung out with the crew; a very blue-collar "here to do a job" attitude.

I have nothing but respect for Stallone, but I have to say that Bronson back in his physical prime (Cold Sweat or Hard Times) would probably get my nod for toughness... like Stallone, though, Bronson also serves as a great role model for a man remaining in top-flight physical condition long after many men have resigned themselves to middle-aged flab and weakness.

Dec 14th, 2006

I got one question for Sly and I think it's worth asking... Alright, in France (a remote country far far away...), the most popular satyrical show is a called the Guignols (7.50pm every evening), and it basically makes fun of everything with a good old French "humour" (evil Americans, friendly suicide bombers... Sacrebleu!). Here is when Sly comes in the picture: it started with the World Company, which is basically a kind of super lobby invented to represent whatever is pro America/Imperialism/greedy and manipulating... and the company's workers are all... clones of Sly !!! (named Monsieur Silvestre for the occasion). And now, everytime there is someone who seems to pull the strings of someone else (the Pope, Bush, Lobbies...), acting in the shadows with greedy intentions, he is embodied by Silvestre. How does Sly reacts to do that? what is it like to embody all the conspiracy theories/Imperialist ideas for millions of French? Looking forward to an answer (sorry if the question/post is so long...) PS: I love you Sly. Sea shells can't taste the same now...

That's fantastic! I moved to France recently but was completely unaware of this Monsieur Silvestre thing. Although I don't have a TV, so maybe that's why. It will be interesting to see Rocky Balboa with a French audience: will they cheer this symbol of imperialism? As for the man himself... I'm probably repeating what other folks have said here, but in the last two weeks I've gone from total ambivalence to really liking this guy. What an honest, funny, stand-up fella he is. And he answered a question from a Scot. Sly, you are indeed a sacred cow.

The politics of Rocky IV (a repost)
by chrth
Dec 14th, 2006
06:57:02 AM
Since it came up in the questions, I'm going to repost something I wrote up about a month ago on this site since it boggles my mind how many people miss this point when they utter inanities such as "Rocky won the Cold War".

"I'm surprised so many people misunderstand Rocky IV

by chrth

What the movie is showing is three distinct attitudes, and it's offering a criticism on two of them.

The first is the Jingoistic Flashy American attitude exemplified by Apollo Creed (and James Brown). This attitude is style over substance, cockiness instead of confidence, and the inability to take an opponent--one who may be your equal--seriously. The fact that Apollo dies indicates the belief that this sort of attitude is wrong, and may be fatal to the practitioner. In other words, it's a slap in the face of America Fuck Yeah! attitudes (you listening, Toby Keith?).

The second attitude is that displayed by Drago. This is a belief in science and technology that can build a better machine that will overcome all obstacles. It is unemotional, immovable, but ultimately can not match up with the third attitude.

This third attitude is of industriousness and dedication, humility and ingenuity. It's equated with the land in Rocky's use of farm implements to train. The fact that he does this training in the Soviet Union demonstrates that such a mindset is possible for both nations (Rocky representing the US) and also ties into the original ideas of the strengths of the working class. If he can change (from the first attitude) and you can change (from the second attitude) then everyone can change (to the third attitude).

That is what Rocky IV is all about.

"

One amusing sidenote is that despite the fact that he had the full Rocky boxset, they took the time to open it, remove Rocky V leave it in the house! I'm not having a go though Sly!!! This is the greatest feature I've ever seen on AICN, I'm recommending all my mates to come and have a look. Sly, man, you're one funny f*cker. Have to admit that whilst I've always loved Rocky - its ending was gloriously unexpected for me, (as most Sports films are about conclusively beating the bad team / guy in the end) I was probably going to wait to see Rocky Balboa on DVD, think I owe it to the big man now to take a trip to the cinema - if the movie is half as entertaining as some of these answers, I'll love it! Well thats my overlong contribution to this forum, if there's time for a question, mine is: Sly, If you could cast any actor from any time in one of your films, who would you pick? Cheers Dave, UK. PS don't go and watch Everton, they're shite, watch Liverpool instead!

I was wondering what your personal views were on God, Jesus etc. I'm sure Warrior saying "See you in Hell" wasn't indicative of him believing your going to Hell, but it made me wonder if you had any particular faith beyond in yourself. Though I'm not trying to force a stereotype but with Rocky going to the priest for a blessing and the fact that you are Italian, I'm suspecting Catholic...

I'm right with you in your interpretation, but I've always layered in another element. I think Rocky went to the Soviet Union to train because, even as a potentially brain-damaged galoot, he knew that the only way to beat an opponent is to get inside his head. To understand where he comes from, what he wants and why he wants it. By going to Drago's homeland and essentially reforging himself there, he learned all of the things Drago had forgotten in allowing himself to be elevated above and removed from the people by science, technology AND politics. In essence, Rocky learned what it was to be hungry...in Russia. I've always been certain there was a deleted scene, somewhere, showing Rocky standing in a bread line.

i had a question about FIST but Harry seems to frightened to ask it you. Anthony Kiedis from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers played your son Kevin Kovak (as Cole Dammett. In his autobiography "Scar Tissue" he claims he came to your trailer to ask ifhe could go over his lines with you and that you looked at him laughed and said "get this kid outta here" and shut the door. I was wondering what your recollection if any of this event was, and what you now think of the chilli peppers all these years on. I think you will answer this question cause i dont think you have anything to hide. Couldhave been bad timing, anthony could have been being arrogant.

I'm not sure about that. It seems to me that Drago has been so thoroughly transformed by the Soviet Athlete Machine that there would be no trace of whatever existed before. Although perhaps that *is* what we're seeing by Drago's attitude late in the match (I win for me! FOR ME!). Hmmm
That "for me" part was big for me, chrth.

I think you're right about Drago having forgotten what he was and what might've driven him, as a young farmhand or factory worker, presumably, to enter the military and to become a fighter int he first place. Despite the trappings of communism and being constantly reassured that he was a cog in a larger machine, he hungered for something more for himself. He wanted glory and distinction. Naturally (or, more accurately, unnaturally) those desires and drivers were conditioned out of him, but Rocky so thoroughly embodied those same concepts (both in his own background and in the fundamental understanding he'd developed of how a younger Drago might've first aspired to rise above what and where he was) that Rocky reminded Drago of why he fought in the first place. Frankly, I think it would've been a better movie if the match had ended in a draw or even with Rocky losing but knowing he'd reawakened the man inside Drago's soulless machine.

I was watching that clip and my French flatmates came in from the other room to sing along. I guess I have some cultural catching-up to do. What are the rules about using peoples' likenesses for satirical puppetry? Politicians are fair game, but I'm sure some celebrities have effectively copyrighted their own image, so they can't be unwittingly used to advertise stuff... maybe be associated with neo fascism also. Either way, Sly probably has a sense of humour about this so I don't think it's lawsuit time. Just wondering. DamnYouMichaelBay, I remember Spitting Image (just) but I thought it was only funny on occasion. The French have a different sense of humour, and you owe it to yourself to find footage of a comedian/musician trio called Les Inconnus. Utterly, utterly unfathomable.

I think I'm really going to miss these when you're done. I think we've all kinda been feeling like we bonded with someone we'd already been emotionally invested in over so many great movies... now you just stepped off the silver screen and walked into our homes and shot the shit with us for 2 weeks straight. I'm ready to sign the adoption papers and you can be my new Dad. Cause you kick mother fucking ass man. And all you cynical fuckers, admit you are feeling the same thing. Why'd you have to go and make a Brokeback reference? Now Gaius is going to point out how you can't seem to help slipping those into posts and the rest of us are going to have to deal with another "is he or isn't he that guy who got banned" thing. Besides, Stallone has made it clear he doesn't swing that way. I forget which round it was, but he claimed to be almost physically ill while showering with Kurt Russell. If such a healthy, normal reaction isn't the surest indicator of heterosexuality (without even a hint of sexual insecurity on the part of the nauseated), then I don't know what is. And could there be a more unquestionably manly movie than Staying Alive?

...for Rocky Balboa being "It Ain't Over til it's Over," Sly shoulda re-used Frank's song from Stayin' Alive, "Far From Over." And he shoulda had that Dan guy who sang "Long Road" from First Blood do something. Like just appear in the background anywhere in the flick, singing it into a mic, like that dude who sang the Love Boat theme outside the prison in "Airplane 2." He could be the lounge guy in Rocky's restaurant, as people stir their linguini: "It's a looong road, when you're on your oooown, and it hurts..."

In Sly's shooting script for "Rocky IV" (which is infinitely better than the finished music video--er film), Rocky goes to Siberia to train because Americans keeps bugging him over here and he can't concetrate on the training (People show up with banners reading "Don't bomb, send Rocky", etc). Adrian does not utter the totally out-of-character "You can't win!" (in fact her whole attitude is "I'm against this, but you gotta do what you gotta do"). So that's why Rocky goes to Russia... I've no idea if it was actually filmed and then cut out, because the script is like a 2 1/2 hour movie. But I can tell you this: Stu Nahan and Tony Burton said they came out of "Rocky IV" crying... because it was not the movie that they had shot.

It's too bad that no one else can do one without looking like a poseur, because I would love to see this become a regular installment. Like, a person of the month, with articles relating to that person, and a Q/A, leading up to the release of their new film. Ben Affleck is someone who has been both adored and shit upon, but is still pretty fucking cool, and definitely smart/witty enough to have fun with this. Plus, Smokin' Aces comes out in what, February? Seems like good timing to me.

I wasn't sure that he would, but I am not suprised Mr. Stallone read the first few Talkbacks. I mean, this is probably the first time he's done anything like this....and after the first few reponses were posted up, it is natural for him to be curious as to what people have to say about it. (I doubt he is reading now, 2 weeks later, though.)

He is in the middle of promoting Rocky Balboa, and while reading the first few TBs he sees AK-47 trashing it. Being this is the first time Stallone is doing this, it is natural for him to want to respond. He's a person, too.

BTW, I bought the Rocky Collector's Edition today. How come no one told me this was coming out!!

Just so you know...I sorta looked into this awhile back. Something happened with the Rocky rights or something between Hasbro and the studios or something, I can't remember (and bet if I looked into it I could find it). What did happen is the figure WAS released, in some form, as Big Boa- Now a Cobra character. He came with boxing gloves and like a bag and things...they just redid the figure. I don't remember why it was scratched exactly, just remember it was scratched and then issed in part as the Big Boa figure.
Rambo IV NO Violence?

Hi Sly. Ive been a very big fan of yours for alot of years now and am defently looking forward to when rocky 6 drops over here in Australia. I do however have some questions about the upcoming new rambo movie. I have read alot about whats happening over there in thailand and how they have toned down the violence. I think this could very much hurt the movie in alot of ways. Rocky 6 has created such a buzz and hasnt been released yet, this will pave the way for Rambo IV and peoples expectations very soon. Do you think Thailand will negatively impact on this movie by taking out alot of the violence and action? Would filming outside Thailand be a better idea when filming does commence? This could very well hurt the Rambo triology if not done right and rambo 4 could be the next rocky 5.

Why would Sly make a PG13 Rambo? He may be a star but he still has SOME touch with reality. They don't need to shoot in Thailand...they can just shoot somewhere else representing Thailand, or forget that place altogether.

What I'm worried about is that he'll be with a team this time. I don't mind a team with Rambo....as long as the team more resembles Predator and less Blade III.

I just got back from an early screening of RB in a San Diego theatre tonight. Wow. First let me say this. There were atleast four times as much people in line then could fit in the theatre. They had to turn people away. Many Many. Luckily for me I got it. The only sad thing about this experiences was the fact that there were no freaking trailers. :( Anyways the movie starts and you can hear the audience really getting into the opening sequence. I won't spoiler here but this movie freaking rocks and I hope it makes a ton of money. YOu can tell Sly poured his heart and soul into this thing. You can't help but see the parallels to the rocky story and Sly's career. All I gotta say is OLD DOG PUNCHY!! My favorite scene that literally brought me to tears was the scene between Rocky and his son when Rocky confronts him about fighting again. This is downright gutwrenching reality and I can't help but think there is some truth to this when it comes to celebrities and their children. This could be my favorite Stallone movie ever...not just Rocky. Thanks for one last hurrah!!! Rocky!! Rocky!! Rocky!!! fade to black. Gary Roberts ARM TV (GOOGLE IT)ARMWRESTLING!!!!
