Sly seems to be opening up and really giving an honest to god honest answer to some of these questions... His answer in regards to Cobra.."I believe the inclusion of a real actress and not a bewigged ex-wife would’ve certainly been a celebrated change and perhaps would’ve made the series a lot more dramatic." I completely agree. Bridget's presence in this film makes me wince in pain. It's cheesy knowing that she and Cobra were real life partners. I don't particularly think that Harry is giving him the best questions in the hat, but Stallone is answering what he is getting pretty honestly.

James Cameron Helped Write Rambo. Tell Us Sly!

I've sent this question in and I've yet to see it appear, so I'm just going to throw it out here and see if Sly will respond. James Cameron has writing credits for First Blood 2:Rambo. I'm curious has to how his involvement came to be in the project and what he added to the Rambo character. Stallone, what do you remember about working with J.C.?

It was nice to hear some new stuff on other films. Didn't realize Carridine was like that. While Stallone is no where near the top of my list of favorite actors, I am now having a lot more respect for him. I got to say he is good at what he does and I enjoy seeing him at his best. I will always remember Cliffhanger. It was my first R and Stallone film that I saw in theaters. And I always love the campy, cult stuff like Death Race 2000
"The Rock" is indeed awesome....
by GibsonUSA Returns

And like Mr. Stallone he seems like a genuine fellow. The Rock would actually make a great opponent for Rambo. In every Rambo movie, Rambo has to wrestle with this huge bad guy henchman. The Rock (or Tony Jaa) would make great opponents.

I always enjoy Q&A with actors and directors, like inside the actors studio and this. It allows you to see a celebrity as they really are. It opens then up and let's you know if they are a dick or they are just faking everything and acting like they know it all when they are really just idiots. Then you have people like Stallone who show there soul and allow us to really understand who they are and with that, despite your opinions on there films, you realise the film world is better with them in it
I know he'll never answer this.

(-quote by F. Scott Fitzgerald) I think that's the primary lesson for those who are doubting what Rocky in Rock balboa can do, what Mr. Stallone can do, and what Rambo will do. Heroes don't look at what's already been done in the hopes of matching or beating it.....they envision things that have yet to happen.

Mr. Action....meet Mr. Action Director. Yeah, some people rag on Mission Impossible 2, but that suffered more from writing issues, and Woo didn't write it. Plus MI2 made $215 domestically, so forget you! Hard Boiled, A Better Tomorrow, and The Killer are amazing and were kicking ass in the 80s and 90s alongside Rambo and Terminator. The thought of John Woo's gliding camera swinging down past Rambo as he mows down the enemies in the back of a moving Hummer SUT gives me chills. :P
religious imagery in rocky
by damagedinc
Dec 9th, 2006
02:25:08 AM
i had a religion-media-movies class in my undergrad school where the professor tried to equate film's protagonist with Jesus. Luke Skywalker, Superman, and....Rocky. One of his big arguments for religious imagery in Rocky was in regards to the beginning of the film where he said Rocky was being equated with Jesus in that establishing shot. Then someone from the class said that he read about how that was just a huge coincidence and that the filmmakers just made use of their settings at the last minute. the professor refused to believe it

Please give some insight into the movie OVER THE TOP and how you got involved in the project. Were you happy with the result? You mentioned that making movies is like dressing in the dark. Did you go into the production of OTT with a different outcome in mind? If you had to do it over again would you NOT make the movie OR just go in a different direction with it? And as a very large fan of Mr. Stallone...I have been going to your movies most of my life. I am thirty four years old today and I can still remember my "Rocky moment"...leaving the theatre shadow boxing to the music in my head... but I have been SADDENED to see the last few movies you have made go staight to video...on the BLOCKBUSTER SHELF. Why does this happen? I don't understand the trend. You have millions of fans world wide AND I HOPE ROCKY BALBOA CHANGES THE TREND!! This is the best thing to hit AICN in ages, perhaps ever. Not only do we get honest answers, hilarious anecdotes(one-winged owls and wanting to crush John "circus float" Carradine's windpipe), truly interesting insights and a ref to Kitty & Stud's, but Stallone also shows himself to be a down-n-dirty, high quality talkbacker! Perhaps there's a lesson for Don Murphy in all this.

This is some of the best internet I have ever seen. You wanna do a little upkeep on your image then come on here and whittle away. Before these Q&A's "Stallone" signified bad movies and cheesy arrogance. Now I think the guy is alright since even he has to laugh at some of the lower career choices he's made. It truly is an underdog story, with lots of people calling us crazy, her parents not liking me and of course the distance. She's asked me to get her the Rocky boxset for Christmas, and i think the best Christmas present she could have with that...is just a call out from you. So please can you just write 'Yo, Adrienne from Sly' or something, i don't know how, e-mail me at pesfanatic@hotmail.com or something. But i do know that come February, when we go on our actual first date and meet up to see the new Rocky film, it'll be that more special. Clint Eastwood was 56 when he did "HEARTBREAK RIDGE" ...and likewise, you are certainly capable of taking on such a "tough, old guy" role. And John Rambo is a character worth revisiting. Plus, there are plenty of directions you can go with the character, ...even surprising ones. Consider, for example, how the RAMBO and ROCKY sequels changed in style, ...each having their own unique vision (for better or worse, as "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", as is the case with "art"). Have you considered taking the Rambo character in a really surprising direction? One... VVVVERY... surprising direction (which I would love AND pay to see) would be for Rambo to be living back in the states (choose your setting, choose his occupation) where John Rambo has a daughter (choose her age) and she is engaged to be married. The guy she is engaged to happens to be "The Rock" (choose his occupation, good or bad). Now take that idea and run with it, with as much HUMOR and/or ACTION (drama, whatever) and CONFLICT as you want. THAT would be a fun screenplay to write (and re-write). --On another note, I'd love to see you just completely trust a proven, talented filmmaker such as Quentin Tarantino ("INGLORIOUS BASTARDS", yes!!!) or someone of the likes of James Cameron (Tell us anything interesting about your history with Jim.) --And lastly, are you against using blue/green screen technology for computer visual/special effects and computer animation? Do you consider yourself to be a director who prefers a more life-like vision, ...or are you open to using lots of blue/green screen if the movie is so effects driven, such as one based in the realm of fantasy? If you happen to respond or answer these questions, great. If not, ...then I only wish you great success in whatever choices you make. Best of luck to you, Sly.

The story of how Rocky was written and then brought to production has to make you respect the guy. It doesn't matter if IV was a little silly, or if Sly made a movie with Dolly Parton, or if you didn't like the choices made in making Judge Dread. Stallone got one of the greatest sports movies of all time made because of his own integrity. Period.
Sell ROCKY & RAMBO characters to MICROSOFT (XBOX 360).
by JDanielP
Dec 9th, 2006
07:25:51 AM
Say what you want, but these characters could be HUGE in the video game market, if done RIGHT. With a company like Microsoft handing the characters over to a software company like Bungie, you could expect great things. --Also, why couldn't "prime" Stallone be brought back to life via computer animation, as in a computer animated movie or game, like a sequel to "THE INCREDIBLES" or a game like "TUROK: DINOSAUR HUNTER", movie or game??? Let's hope that all this potential doesn't get wasted!

Most non-fictional people called "Rocky" actually have another first name that they don't use. Rocky Marciano's first name was Rocco. Rocky Nelson's first name was Glenn. Salt Lake City mayor Rocky Anderson's first name is Ross. Does Rocky Balboa have a first name he never uses, or is his first name actually Rocky?

Hi Mr. Stallone, I would like to know your opinion about the recent Michael Jackson trial. There are some pictures of you and MJ when you visiting the Bad and Dangerous concert. 11:34:30 AM
I know image is everything and I know actors get pidgeon holed by their success. Sly 'is' Rocky, and Rambo and all the other unique action heroes that he's played. He doesn't get the credit he deserves for being a darn fine actor. The movie Oscar is a case in point. A fast talking, screwball comedy in the style of Bringing Up Baby and His Girl Friday. Great movie, great dialogue, great acting and Sylvester Stallone pulls it off. It would be great to see another Sly comedy like that, probably won't happen but at least Oscar is there and it illustrates the range and talent of Mr. Stallone. Sly lives the life the way we all would like to live it, as his character Rocky says, it's about how hard you get hit by life and still go forward. I'm so there on the first day Rocky Balboa opens.

My question; was there a particular point--- and when would it have been--- that you realized the first "Rocky" script you authored was worth all that you risked (your reputation, personal finances and, allegedly, your knuckles), as the film is now recognized as a classic? As an aside, I ask this because in today's environment, people in almost every walk of life are seemingly fettered to Kiyosaki's concept of OPM (other people's money) to fund their ventures. So much so, in fact, I sometimes wonder how many creative masterpieces never see the light of day because the author, actor, painter, or whomever doesn’t persevere in their commitment to their intellectual works... once some type of risk is introduced into the equation.

by ptindy
Dec 9th, 2006
12:59:53 PM
The beginning of this Q/A, he talks about someone hating on him and I believe he is referring to this.... Back in Round 5 Talkback AK-47 had the following to say. (And since then, I believe he has been AWOL:) Sorry Sly... by AK-47 Dec 6th, 2006 09:32:27 AM but your movie SUCKS. I went to a private screening of Rocky Balboa last night and if anyone here has any inkling that this movie is anything but awful, you or sorely sorely mistaken. It's a nothing more than a vanity piece by an aging Hollywood ego-maniacal has-been. The first two-thirds is all set-up for a ridiculous final act that stretches the bounds of plausability with its "I don't need to block a punch" fighting style typical of all the Rocky movies. The set-up is ok but it spends the majority of its time trying to convince the audience that a near 60 year old brain damaged former fighter might beat a current heavyweight champion. I mean when you see Mason Dixon it's obvious this wasn't necessary as the guy looks like Mohammed Ali's daughter could kick his ass. Even hard-core Rocky fans will scoff when enjoyable moments such as the training are brushed over in order to get to the fight scene that is not only poorly executed and anti-climatic, but is little more than one giant Golden Palace advertisement. And don't get me started on the gratuitous Paulie moments in which he makes endless racist jokes that we're supposed to find funny or ignore, but just come off as pathetic. Yes, make no mistake, this movie is a travesty.
At first I was "meh" about this Q & A thing.

or must be. that was the only overtly negative thing. Granted I did stand up for his opinion about the film, but I do not know if he is correct. We will see when the film comes out. I do have to say this, the trailer was not very well done. But as we all know that means nothing. Geez,Pearl Harbor had an amazing trailer and we all know how that came out so lets wait and see. Sly seems to have a lot of faith and pride in the film and since he has been so honest about his dislikes and likes about all of his other films that says a lot about this. Here's hoping.

Sly. I've always wondered why 'The Cobra' cut that damn piece of pizza with scissors. Was there no other cutlery in the apartment? Were all the dishes dirty? No 'sporks' from KFC lyin' around? I will say this. In 1986, I pulled out the scissors on a date at the local Pizza Hut and the chick was impressed. Add to that, using an unlit matchstick instead of a tootpick after dinner and cruisin' town with warm 'Coors'. Needless to say, I scored a lot of poon that year. Thanks Sly.

Message to Sly

Hey Sly, since you're reading this, I have a few things I want to tell you: 1) I love Rocky IV, and I think the message in that movie holds the answer to world peace. The one of people showing their heart to those who hate them, and communing with them to gain peace and learn of each others common humanity, instead of becoming more detached and mechanized killing machines like Ivan Drago. 2) I think I can see what message you are trying to send with Rocky Balboa, and the quote where Rocky says "Its not how hard you can hit, its how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward" says it all for me. For that message, I just have to say...I love you. And I mean that in the gayest way possible. Just kidding, but I do love you. 3) Finally, I'll be seeing 'Rocky Balboa' on opening weekend to do my part so that the film does well, and we can see more of you in the years to come. Sincerely, Bobo_Vision

While that guy with all the negitive things to say is jerking off in his parents basement at 35 years old. Keep punching Sly. Can't wait for Rocky Balboa.

You've always been my favorite actor since I watched Rocky and First blood. I've always related to the underdog characters that you usually play. Blind motherfuckers who do not see your talent out of ignorance stupifies me on every level. You are the main reason why my dream of becoming a film maker is still alive with Al Pacino coming in second. Wish you all the luck and hopefully I get to work with you once I hit it big. *** I think you can go the route that the great Clint Eastwood did... Making action movies with characters like Dirty Harry at your age. Nothing too physical. Just you with a fucking pistol killing rapists or something. Take care!

Why don't you dorks get in the ring with him? I'm sure, even at 60 he would kick your ass. I'm not trying to volunteer Sylvester Stallone to get in the ring with thousands of dorks. I just mean rather than be negative about the film. You should be giving the man credit for still being out there. And still trying to contribute on the biggest of stages. Hat's off to Sly for getting this film done. And the message (that life does not end at 30)that it gets out.
Sly is a Real Artist
by sentient

I'm the guy who still believes that Charlton Heston can kick Cinematic Ass! San's a gun. I look forward to Stallone's Poe. I hope it's a story of bitter self doubting, self loathing, self abusive, reclusive, artistic struggle. I'm an artist myself. I like to sculpt prop film replica characters. Recreation is the hardest form of art in the sculptural field. This is not true for music or drawing. Too many exact answers too the questions are given. I find that art helps me to escape myself and the world- more than anything else. I'm also a perfectionist, and that means that I toil and go mad over my own artistic efforts. I am my own worst enemy and judge. Making it damn near impossible to see things I begin finished. Seeing and knowing my own failure and mistakes too clearly. I imagine that if Poe was also a perfectionist that he probably reworked his narrative and character vocals over and over again until the words and plot had a certain flow about them that made him feel like they earned their place or spoke on his desire/eye to really peel away the layers of needless filler to tell a story- that so many others tend to place into the narrative art form to expand the pages and length. It's a crazy world being a creative type! You are so full of self doubt and you admire and idolize so many other creative types. Wishing too one day stand among or above them. Stallone's a pretty cool guy! I'm a timid small fuzzy creature, stuck in the awe of his oncoming headlights of wisdom and life, and laughs. He shoots straight from the hip, and he seems like he's awake in life. Which so very few are. Even more so when they hail or reside in the Wood. No one has YES-MAN'd Sly to a point where he's a do it by numbers writer, director, and actor. He still wants to say and do something profound and truthful in regards to his work. He seems to enjoy knowing that he's reaches a place in the common mans heart with his films. His travel to where he is now sounds like it had a rocky start (no pun intended). Living on the street, dreaming of others watching, reading, and enjoying something you poured your heart and soul into. Finally taking that plunge and seeing something happen that exceeds the scope of that dream. That must be one hell of a feeling to receive and be a part of. I guess the one question I really want to know is the Stanley Kubrick thing. I know Stallone went to Kubrick's house in England and asked about playing Poe or working on a Poe movie with Stanley, and Stanley slammed or refused to open the door, or something like that. Well here's Stallone all these years later. Still wanting to do this, still feeling some form of emotional attachment to it that only an true, loving, obsessive type, could. The people who don't drop things despite the refusal or discouragement of others. In most cases these "Wont Let Go" types, do they're obsessions real justice. I have absolut faith in Sly in regards to Poe. I think I know or sahre some of his pain in regards to this. I got this 3 years going clay sculpted Empire Strikes Back version of Yoda. It must, no it has to be perfect to the film used version! No matter how long I toil away my life on it to get it there! I don't care. I must see it done perfect too the source. So even the most disconcerting eye is incapable of knowing that it is a ground up made replica. May the Poe be with you! Mr. Stallone I'm rabbling. Now if only Sly, Bruce, Arnold, Jackie, and Van would make a super superhero flick. I'm dying to see them all in the same frame at one time in a cinematic flick. It could be a cool Grind House trailer! Enough of my ass kissing. Go get em Sly! beat their ears and eyes in, change their opinions to the point where they fallaciously claim to have always believed in you when there was so much doubt! Thats what real artist does everyday and I think your of the same cloth.

I remember about a year and a half ago people laughing that the 60 plus year old Rolling Stones were going back out on tour. Now, after nearly completing the biggest tour in the history of music. Nobody is laughing at the Stones (the only band left in the world that plays 50,000 seat football stadiums on a regular basis) anymore. They outsold bands 1/3 their age by 100 to 1. The same thing is going to happen when Rocky Balboa is a major x-mas hit.

Obtain the rights to the Etheridge book, get Dolph Lundgren, Mark Dacascos and Jackie Chan cast(and a female lead who doesn't mind running around sans clothes ala Mathilda May in LIFEFORCE, as the romantic interest). This has Stallone written all over it(to me anyway) and would make an incredible action/sci-fi/martial arts feature film. Get Rob Rodriguez or John Woo to direct.

How did his view of the Green Beret differ from yours? Also, I have seen Rocky more than any other movie, even Star Wars! My favorite scene, however, is the vigil in Rocky II. Rocky's weeping by the bed of the comatose Adrian was beautifully acted. Razzies, be damned. You are a Hollywood icon.

I'm curious: I'm used to Clubber Lang being a rotten bastard in Rocky III and the revenge story of Rocky IV. I can't imagine Rocky stepping into the ring with someone who he doesn't have some kind of vendetta against. But it seems like in Rocky Balboa, it's more of a sporting event and a way for Rocky to prove he can still go the distance; there's no personal conflict between the two fighters. Is this true or is there any kind of animosity here?

by SK909
Dec 9th, 2006

seriously, what other Hollywood star has ever demonstrated this kind of class, humor, decency, and unerring honesty in an interview? I think that, by far, the saddest thing about this is that it will never get the credit it deserves as an important piece of film journalism. It's just fucking ridiculous... it's the same as how certain celebrities will go on(or not go on) Howard Stern and not open up in the least bit, as though their particular stories are the ones that are the most earth-shattering or something, and yet Paul McCartney went on there and was honest to a fault, almost. I'm not the biggest fan of his, but I acknowledge his importance as a cultural figure is far above, say, Gwyneth Paltrow, who consistently demonstrates in interviews what an out-of-touch with reality, self-important bitch she has become(did anyone see her on the Daily Show?) Anyway, why an interview on The View or 20/20 or any number of other 'news' or 'talk' programs are better than this when all they do is soft-pedal and do their best to maintain the customary air of phoniness is beyond me. But we all know this is the shit and so is Sly and, for now, that just has to be enough.

Do you ask questions in talk back? If so my Question is...What ever happened to the original cut of Cliffhanger? There was talk at the time that the original cut was to violent and was ordered to be cut down. Are there any plans to release this version on DVD or are the changes to minor to worry about? and are there any juicy deleted scenes from any of your films that have never seen the light of day?...........I also have a second question but it doesn't have to be answered. Do you like female action heroes and would you ever allow yourself to be beaten by a woman hero in an action film?

My own wife dragged me into the horror spectacle that was The Surreal Life, and all joking aside, Ms. Nielsen was just sad. I mean that literally: it was painful to see straight up alcoholism put on exhibit like that. Like the family used to say, she looked like she'd been "rode hard and put away wet." Too late to ask, but I wonder if Sly caught any of that. What a friggin' train wreck.

By the way your the only italian actor who hasn't worked with martin scorsese or been stereotyped as the italian mob guy.... whats up with that. Is there any director--other than tarrentino- who you'd like to work with and what are your realistic chances of actually working with them.

Where's the questions. Hoping that one of the several I e-mailed get chosen - but won't hold my breath. Loving every response so far anyway. If Sly decides to knock acting on the head after Rocky and Rambo he'll be robbing us of one of Hollywoods most enduring figures and it won't be the same without the prospect of a new Stallone film on the horizon.

Thats why he and Arnold and Bruce... are still in demand. Todays action heroes are a bunch of pussies. I dont think thats what the audiences want either, I think its because Hollywood is politically correct and averse to using strong white males in lead action roles. They still need to make action movies though because they make alot of money. So they make them with kung fu or swordfights, etc... instead of guns, and with male leads that are smaller and not as... physical. Thats less offensive to todays poltically correct climate (especially in Hollywood itself). The other thing they do is put minorites in these lead roles instead of white males, or they use females. I dont mind any of that if there was a market for it, and if it wasnt to the exclusion of having the kind of action stars and movies we use to back in the eighties.
