Funny how the United States media works, baying like hounds over Mel's nasty tirade but ignoring others ... like football commentator Michael Irvin's racist slurs against Tony Romo. Is Irvin as prominent as Gibson. Of course not - but to be totally ignored? I don't get it.

Was I the only one to see, for a brief minute, an article titled "Simpsons: The Movie script leaks. Get your look at the pages here before they disappear?" Was around 12pm (I think) GMT. Was only up for a minute or so, and when I clicked on the link took me to a page that wasn't found. Hopefully other people saw this :D

Digital Dong and I were being sarcastic to make a point. There is a double standard in this country where minorities are often given a free pass when making racial comments about whites. Michael Irvin said that Tony Romo is playing so well, "he must have some black in him". If a white commentator said that the reason a black player was playing well because "he has some white in him", they'd be handed their pink slip by the commerical break.

I think it was meant tongue-in-cheek. No one (I hope) genuinely believes you're exempt from making racist comments simply because you're part of a demographic that has historically seen the brunt such comments. There is certainly a pervasive sense of hyper-reaction to racist slurs from whites, but that I think is simply because we (I'm white) are still carrying some of the accountability for past institutionalized racism, so that automatically puts us on the back foot. I think everyone is accountable. But some are more accountable than others.

and not racist at all. Racism is supposed to derogatory or demeaning - having "some black in him" is neither, considering the ratio of black:white athletes in that position. Athletically (at least in football, but other sports too) black athletes simply outcompete white athletes in what were historically white-dominated sports - it's not a racial judgement... it's a fact of numbers. That said, I do still think that the double-standards that seem to exist are bullshit. I just don't think this is a worthwhile example. If a commentator said that a black runner "had some white in him" it would have been racist because there is no factual foundation for cracking such a comment. Few people genuinely believe that white athletes are the dominant color performers on a football field any longer, so there would have to be some other motivation for implying that "whiteness" was making him run faster... the only one I can think of is inherent superiority, which is blatant racism. Anyway - enough race-talk. Apocalypto is worth the money just to see the makeup/costumes/set design and the fucking awesome weapons/gore. Imo

during some Katrina meeting or soemthing that said some pretty derogatory things about white people and called for the extermination of all whites... and no, he was not drunk, or being heckled, it was a very thoroughly thought out speech... it was on youtube for awhile and played on CSPAN, but I guess the world was concentrating on Entertainment Tonight's coverage of that Seinfeld fella who lost it after being wrongfully provoked. Good job main stream media...

This movie is going to TANK on an epic level. How do I know this? I have seen 3 movies this month that featured the APOCALYPTO trailer. Each and every time, dozens of people in the audience promptly pulled out their phones, pagers, and electronic doodads for a quick check. In other words, nobody wants to see this thing. Can you say, "Critically acclaimed bomb?"

Um, rothbart, you are calling Mel Gibson a "crazy bigot"? You are kidding, right? Mel Gibson was crushed by a wall of anti-Christian bigots (many of them Jewish) for daring to make a pro-Christian movie. And he amazingly held his tongue .. the only slip was when he was one time when he was drunk. If I had been attacked the way he (and his father!) were I would not have held it in, I would have gone on the counter-attack fully sober. Mel is a rare man of grace in a crude, lawsuit-happy, overly sensitive post-modern world.
