Nothing wrong with trying to better yourself. Props to Joe Nichol (a far better name for a director!) for taking it on the chin and having a go. I might even see this. Sounds like the kind of movie I enjoy (on a Sunday afternoon). Just drop the stupid name McG. Honestly pal, you will never get credability with a moniker like that!

I'm actually looking forward to seeing whether this McG can do something other than that ubermoronic cartoon style he used for Charlie's Angels. It worked okay for those films, which I guess are a part of the 'intentionally stupid' genre, but I can't see an actual adult wanting to do that forever. Ditching the nickname would be a good start if he wants to be taken more seriously. Raging Bull is not 'a film by Marty' and Psycho is not 'directed by Hitch'. Insisting on being credited under your baby nickname seems a bit... I don't know... babyish?

In my dealings with McG while covering the making of this movie he was sincere, gracious and genuinely concerned about getting the story right, getting the "feel" right. The Marshall plane crash is a unique moment in West Virginia history. It devastated an entire community. Children were orphaned. A city was left without its most prominent leaders. The heart was literally torn from the second biggest university in the state. If you weren't here, there's no way to understand the impact of the crash. For McG to come in, a guy known for "Charlie's Angels" (spare me) and do the job that he did is amazing. Whatever the finished product, the feeling here from the people involved, from former Marshall coach Jack Lengyel who took over the program in 1971...to Reggie Oliver the quarterback of the 1971 "Young Thundering Herd" to the teammates and sons and daughters of those who died, McG and his crew did their jobs with the right attitude. So he's not Steven Spielberg. So he's not Ridley Scott. In this instance, McG served an area that is still dealing with this crash, even 36 years later, very well. I'm hopeful it's a good movie. I'm hopeful Matthew McConaughey doesn't come off as a lightweight Hollywood pretty boy. I'm hopeful about a number of things, but I'm thankful about the way the movie makers went about their business. It's been said many times here that Hollywood didn't have to take into account the feelings of the people of Huntington and the Marshall community while making this film. But they did. And in some ways that makes this movie a winner even before I see it.

While Ratner has far more better films under his belt, it is going to become fairly clear that these two are interchangeable in many areas. Oh, and Peter Jackson & Guillermo Del Toro could secretly switch directing roles, and no one would see the difference there either. You know it to be true.

It was horrible. Completely missed the point of the character, huge gaping plot holes, making one of the greatest superheroes ever out to be nothing more than a deadbeat dad and a stalker, giving him a useless kid, a nothing villian that we've seen him defeat four times before. The problem with the continent and plane scenes was that there's no sense of danger or worry that Superman isn't going to make it. He's portrayed as invincible, and Kryptonite is merely a minor inconvienence. I'll take a hundred Brett Ratner, Tim Burton, Michael Bay and McG Superman movies over one more Bryan Singer. Sadly, we're getting another Singer one. *sigh* AND WHERE THE HELL IS MY GREEN LANTERN MOVIE. If fucking DEADMAN can get a movie...

Harry could not stop talking cammy diaz's ass. I think that Ratner despite the knocks gets here has a lot of flair, Rush hour movies were a load of racist hooey but chans fights were the highlight of those films and even in the belittled x-3 he brought a certain flair to the fight scenes. If you cant have fun at the movies you should all stop going.

Apparently you missed the fact that this is not a fictional film. This tragedy actually happened and is based on fact. The progression of "we need a coach" - "now what do we do?" would be very logical. I lived through this as a high school senior planning to attend Marshall, and did attend beginning in 1971, the year after the tragedy. One final thought, after being wiped out on November 14, 1970 Marshall went on to be the winningest football team in the 1990's as documented in Time and Sports Illustrated. Don't think this will make a dime? Go to ebay and see how much tickets to the Premier on Dec 12 cost. How about $200 - $1000.

both have made killer comic book adaptations. singer- xmen. mcg- charlie's angels. yes. i know angels wasn't 'technically' a comic adaptation; but close enough. and, yes, i said both made killer adaptations. i like the angels films. a lot. those girls are awesome. and, the films are spot on fun. haters be damned. xmen 1 and 2 were awesome. loved em! but, then... came 'superman' returns. and, well, suffice it to say, i hated that movie so much. i would gladly have preferred to see mcg's version. it couldn't have been worse. and, superman wouldn't have wound up a loser stalker surrounded by a*holes and a bratty kid. F*CK YOU, SINGER. you've ruined all the MASS GOODWILL i had for you and your films, pre-'stuperman'. hell, i even loved your first film about the local cable tv host. and, i even loved apt pupil. but, dude, you RUINED the 'superman' franchise for a long time to come. be ashamed. be very ashamed. whew. rant subsiding. mcg wins the superman competition- hands down. plus, he produces supernatural. which is a cooler than it should be show...
I am a legit person who likes McG
by Vern

I'm looking forward to this movie although I wish the trailers said "a film by McG" or better yet "from the acclaimed director of Charlie's Angels Full Throttle." This movie looks good in a formulaic, emotionally manipulative but it's based on a true story so they can get away with it type of way. But I'm hoping it turns out to be undeniably great just to make some of you McG "haters" and "wassup rockers" shit your pants.

It seems to me like the only way to really hate McG a this point (as opposed to just not be into him) is to not really get it. Or at least to over react ridiculously. The guy has made exactly two movies, and one is a sequel to the other. That's all we have to judge on. Both have a distinctive style, tone and sense of humor that so far can be considered the McG style. The only movie that feels at all like those ones is Torque, which is obviously inspired by them.

The C's A's pictures can definitely be criticized on several levels: emotional content, intellectual stimulation, adherance to laws of physical reality. In other words, the sorts of things that only a humorless douchebag who doesn't know how to watch movies would think were relevant to these.

You guys are my buds so I am not calling any of you humorless douchebags. I'm talking about those OTHER guys who also don't get C's A's. For some reason they see the very deliberate tone of the movies (gratuitous dance sequences, logic defying mid-air motocross shootouts, Spiderman underoos - what McG calls "a pop a wheelie movie") and think it was done on accident. Like McG could somehow have been trying to make some other movie than exactly what these movies are.

I don't know what will become of McG, but I'm positive those movies will be appreciated on some minor level for many years. I mean come on, you got these horse shit "comedies" coming out every couple weeks (think red letters on white background for logo) from the annual bad Christmas comedy to the bi-monthly spoof movies with "Movie" in the title to the latest Owen Wilson Cashing In Adventure, and everything in between. This guy makes two stylistically ambitious, completely unique and adorably ridiculous action comedies over several years and you act like he skinned your mother alive and jacked off onto all the old photos of her when she had her skin.

There is only one explanation: you guys really still hate him for the Superman movie that you imagined he was gonna make even though he didn't make it. How can you hold a guy responsible for directing a hypothetical movie? If anyone is responsible it is YOU for imagining whatever it was that you imagined that offended you so much. YOU are the one who hates Superman.

In my years on the internet I have encountered many fanatics, but it seems like Superman zealots are a special brand. Most of you guys didn't even know who Brett Ratner was until you got mad at him for his own hypothetical direction of BRETT RATNER'S IMAGINARY SUPERMAN. You nearly beheaded J.J. Abrams (creator of FELICITY) and tried to get a constitutional amendment against Brian Singer getting married.

Why would ANYBODY want to touch Superman at this point? Only you guys really understand the exact Superman movie that you guys want. I think it's time that the professionals stop making Superman stories for you guys and you should make your own. It should probaly be illegal to show a Superman movie to anybody but yourself. A man's Superman movie is between a man and Superman.

Anyway my point is where the fuck is McG's HOT WHEELS?

Quinn - Okay I'll tell you what I thought of Superman Returns, but don't tell these other guys what I said because they might burn me at the stake. I thought it was okay. I liked the scene with the plane, I liked the dude playing Superman, I liked the parts where he sat in space listening to voices like God listening to prayers and deciding which ones to answer. But on the other hand I thought Lex Luther was a dumb villain with a dumb plan and the whole movie was too bound by trying to be like those cheeseball Christopher Reeve Supermans. I know you boys love those things but I don't get it. Also I gotta say the 3-D was pretty weak, they shouldn't've bothered. Better than Freddyvision, though.

Doctor Sin: you're missing out dude. I live in a world where I can enjoy Heroic Trio AND C's A's. Throw in both sequels and that's FOUR movies I can enjoy. You only get one (or two if you like The Executioners). That's half as much at best. Sucker.

Heroic Trio is a good reference point but I don't think C's A's is really the same thing. The action is similar but the tone is less serious and designed as a big tribute to all possible aspects of American popular culture.

Good motorbikes in both, though.

I haven't seen either of the Chalie's Angels movies...but could they be so pants-shittingly, colon-explodingly terrible that he would be forever hated with the hate of a thousand Satans? I can understand Hating Michael Bay on a consistent basis, since he seems to stick to his style over the course of many different films. Not just 2. One of which is a sequel to the 1st. These Charlie's Angels films are very obviously meant to be over the top, silly, cartoon films. It's okay if you don't like them, but that's what they are. People single McG out as a bad director, but what did he do that was bad? They're well paced, the story and action are always clear, the girls look good - it seems like he achieved exactly what he set out to achieve. The question now is whether he has anything else to offer, and that's why I'm interested to see this new film of his. P.S. I'm assuming this new film is not about underpants, Lucy Liu in PVC and slow-motion wire-fu. I apologise if this is not the case.
