Put anything into the subject. At this time the animecontest@gmail.com account is only being used for the purpose of this drawing, so anything that isn't spam will be regarded as an entry.

... that had mixed emotions about HELLSING? Everyone I know, including me, loved it. But then again, we didn't read the manga, so... anyway, looking forward to this release, too.

I honestly thought they'd fired the writer or director or somebody around episode nine. It's probably one of the worst adaptations I've ever seen, even with a character like Alucard.

Was stylish and fun! However they quickly went past where the manga was which is why it kinda falls apart towards the end... well not really falls apart... but it just sort of goes nowhere... Still, I enjoyed it, and it convinced me to pick up the manga which is downright crazy!!! The disappointing thing about the remade OVAs is of course the music of the original series kicked so much ass and was so stylish, I can't bear watching the new stuff without it... yeah, it makes THAT much of a difference to me! That and the stupid overuse of CG, it doesn't really blend well and many scenes while lifted form the manga just seem forced onscreen. So I have mixed feelings about the new Ultimate series, but it might get better once we get to the millenium arc that wasn't in the original series. I can't wait to see Alucard fuck up those South American soldiers in that hotel :D.

I already won in the Lain contest, but what the heck I'll enter this too :P

Cool giveaway. Hellsing Ultimate Vol 01 is good, but Volume 02 is even better!

I saw the TV series a few years back, didn’t read the manga - mostly because the TV series failed to impress. Considering the potential of the story (cool characters, religion, the undead, secrets, twists etc) it just didn’t seem to live up to what it could’ve/should’ve been. If they took the same basic idea but went deeper into character & organizational motivations/flaws/tragedies, character relationships and fleshed out some better antagonists etc it would’ve made for a much better, richer experience. As it stands, despite the cool premise, the TV series seems a bit hollow/shallow and instead of big buildup to an epic conclusion it only manages to crest up to something rather mediocre. Hopefully the TV series was just a bad adaptation and the OVA fixes all of this.

had a good blend of CG and traditional animation.

I do agree with you on the CG thing. The textures, colors, light sourcing, reflective properties, camera focus etc are often out of sync and ironically CG stuff has just way too fluid tweening movement and animates too many things in a scene which causes a harsh clash with the traditional animation style. TV series and lower budget anime sort of perfected the art of animating as little as possible (I imagine to save money) using techinques like panning, parallax and only animating small things that have a large impact such as animating just the mouth and eyes. Cutting out all but the most essential elements required to tell the story had the side effect of creating a greater emotional association/impact in a scene buy allowing the user's focus to center on the important points and key meaning of a scene (ie expression in the eyes, the music denoting emotional context, the actual dialog, subtext etc) instead of being distracted by (story wise) useless stuff like wavy hair, background "noise" or a body turing around in a fluid motion. Not to say that the high budget, beautifully animated stuff isn't any good, but more to make the point out the problems of blending in the too powerful CG techniques with cheap(er) traditional animation. It's odd though how they haven't been able to mesh the two together better more consistantly. You'd think that the process would be something rather straightforward.

...seems to be more strict about their release dates but I've had the same problems with some of their stuff at the bigger outlets. Generally I end up at my favorite little shop and get their stuff pretty much on the official release date. Some of the other companies seem to go to shelf early (up to 10 days sometimes). As for Hellsing - I like the look of the OVA compared to the series. To be honest (or Otto) I tend to like vampire stuff from the vampires point of view. A lot of Hellsing IS from that point of view despite the title. I've always found the Hellsing depictions of the past to be somewhat crazier than the vampire they are usually trying to hunt. "Love At First Bite" sort of sums up how I feel about the subject I guess.

I should tell you that I'm not an animator or in the anime industry, just a fan. Other people may have different ideas and opinions. It's interesting to compare the animation styles and techniques used in something like "Tom & Jerry" or "Bugs Bunny" vs Dragonball, Gundam, etc though... The lack of animation in TV anime becomes very clear.

I love CG and traditional animation when it meshes well together! There's nothing like it! And, of course I refer to series and movies like Ghost in the Shell, Metropolis, Steamboy, Last Exile, Macross Zero etc. The idea is getting the right consistency between the two, but when it works, boy, does it work! And ranma627, I don't mean I won't watch the new Hellsing because of the music, but everytime I watch it, it's like there's something great missing which kind of ruins it for me... If they replaced it with better music, then all good, but I don't feel they accomplished it... They're trying to make it epic, when really Hellsing is more of the balls-to-the-wall badass Religious and vampire exploitation take, it's the riduculousness of Hirano's visual style and dark comedy in a Tarantino-esque fashion that really needs that sort of music to support it... Frankly, I'd hope to see some of the Cross-Fire stories in there as well as The Dawn which looks to be there... but perhaps some of the Cross-Fire stories might be pushing it in terms of it's in-your-face fanaticism? Anyway, when teh heck's the next Hellsing manga book coming out? It's been awhile...
