It took a while for Princess Bride to catch on
by theBigE

It wasn't a commercial success right away, was it? Critics loved it, and I remember friends that really liked it, but didn't it take a few years on video before it really caught on? Like the Shawshank Redemption?

I skipped the review above, because I don't want it spoiled, but it sounds great!

Wants to save a princess before the forces of evil destroy her... derrr, sounds like Star Wars, which sounds like Hidden Fortress, which sounds like every other story ever told.

Simple boy wants Popular girl and makes stupid promise to get her. Hilarity ensues while he realises the girl he promised isn't the one he wants after all, SHE WAS RIGHT UNDER HIS NOSE THE WHOLE TIME! So yeah It's more like Teen Wolf.

TEEN WOLF! Well, that movie has my favorite movie quote of all time: "There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese."
What's up with this site?

Is this site run or being paid by Hollywood studio's? It seems like every review is tailored to give the movie in question another chance. They all seem to be written by these everymen, who represent the target demographic. examples are, 'I went into this movie waiting for it to suck...'. Surprisingly, despite not having any experience in this genre, the director pulled it off in a tour de force of blah blah blah...'. It seems like all of the reviews are good ones, but worse than that, I feel like I'm being manipulated by them. Like they are being written by people involved with the studios in question and then foisted off on us as acutal reviews. In short, I think that a lot of what is going on here nowadays is some sort of underhanded viral marketing.

Welcome to AICN! (But in all fairness, I think a lot of the positive reviews are legit, even though they're sometimes suspiciously literate and concerned with box office competition. When the reviewer plays the devil's advocate role, it does sound plantish.)

Doesnt matter what his background is, as long as he makes good, original movies. TheReturnOfTheReturnOfHP is a DICK, and loves his council estate chav cred. He should fuck off.

Council estate chavs couldn't imagine the privilige and incestuos nepotistic butt fuckery afforded to Public school wankers like Vaughn. Maybe if they could afford to go a fudge factory like Stowe, then they too, could produce a piece of shit like Lock stock.money=status=priviledge- vaughn.Maybe if he wrote the thing it would be different, but he didnt,so Teamhawk, maybe you should fuck off.
FYI: Jane Goldman

Just in case anyone was wondering, Jane Goldman, the screenwriter, is the wife of Britain's top film critic and chatshow host, Johnathan Ross. She has written a couple of novels and some X-Files encyclopedias and presented a show where each week she made a documentary about an aspect of the supernatural, Jane Goldman Investigates. Oh, and she's VERY busty with long pillarbox red hair. And, no, I'm not her official biographer. Lol.

I have NEVER felt more sorry for a stranger in a bathroom! That review was exactly like Spud's speed fuelled job interview in Trainspotting! Aye like I dunno what you think ae Robert DeNiro like, but ken I like him and I think his characters great but like I know some of yous willnae like it, but I dae and thae wee animals getting - well, I mean it didnae bother me but it might bother some sensitive gadges like and but like Michelle Pfieffer is like aw scary like in Batman Returns and, ken Clare Danes - Jesus my head hurts after that. But I am glad you liked the film!

lol. No more reading Stardust stories for this Talkbacker. I love this story far too much and am far, FAR too completely blown away that it's been made into a movie to let ANYTHING that ANYBODY else says about it affect my perception of what the film should be. Hah! Best run-on sentence, ever!
Danes is a highly overrated actress...

...and I was bitterly disappointed when I heard she was cast as Yvaine. Not only is she much too clunky for the part, I have to ask: there wasn't a decent *British* actress available for the role? I think this reviewer is being kind about her bad accent -- actually, having to watch her would be a total turn-off for me. This is sad, because I loved the book.
