I asked a question that involved the effect of test screenings and studio creative input in this Rocky as opposed to his creative autonomy in Rocky 1 but no, we have to know about the sea shells. Shouldn't have expected anything else from this site.

I think Sly hit the nail on the head with that answer. This is the reason why we get so many remakes and why subpar movie directors still get jobs. Not because of any creativity or originality, it's because these people can produce money pure and simple, yet they somehow forgot to produce a good, coherent movie in the process. The sad part is, people believe whatever they're told and they actually go out and pay to see these films. This is the very reason why guys like Michael Bay are still getting work.

Alright...this was a better use of questions that yesterdays. Wow...I'm dissapointed with Carl Weathers. I understand that a man in a career like his in his position is probably trying to get whatever dollars he can get, but you have to be realistic about your value. Dissapointing...I always liked Carl Weathers...except in Action Jackson.

Instead of toilet paper in demolition man, the people of the 'future' Sly wakes up to, uses three seashells to clean the poop from the behind. i disagree with CTU Mole. I think the seashell question was a good intermission between the 'studio' answer and the 'Apollo Greed' comment. The people who run this site are doing something phenomenal here-taking the "star' out of the actor and making him a human. Sly is a obviously a fan's-fan. Thanks AINTITCOOL and thank you Mr.Stallone!

Yeah, I hope this format of 20 days of questions gets picked up on by other actors/actresses. It doesn't even have to be 20 days of Q and A, I mean make it a week or two days. Really great for a star to come outta the hills and answer the common man's questions. Howardroark is right, ET and Extra would not ask, nor would they get a serious answer, to questions like the three seashells. And Carl Weathers is a working man too, he needs his greenbacks just as much as the next guy. So asking for any amount is alright by me, although I laughed when Sly got that dig in with the "Apollo Greed" comment. Really good honest stuff. At least I hope it's honest and not Harry and Co. in Father Geeks basement giggling and laughing and trying to come up with answers to these questions.

you might want to do some searching but for the nintendo (NES) 8-bit there was a rambo II game back when and could still be on the internet. I liked this stallone interview. he's a thinking man's bodyguard and a bodyguard's thinking man all rolled up. I would have liked to talk to the guy about a zombie idea I have where he plays a average joe trying to get to his niece (played by Angelina Jolie who's a mortican scientist.) With the story going back and forth between the two and having them meet.

Several things... 1) I still don't get the three seashells, as that answer is exactly what someone would do with three seashells in that situation. There's no mystery to it. Aside from saving paper, what's the futuristic benefit? Who washes the seashells? If you don't get a perfect swipe the first time, what the hell do you do in your stall with feces-covered seashells? 2) Can we please not call them "Mr. T and Drago?" It should be either Clubber Lang and Drago OR Mr. T and Dolph Lundgren. Sorry, I'm a little OCD. 3) That Rocky video game for the Cube/PS2/Xbox RULED. 4) O.k. So Clubber and Drago appear in a montage. Does that just mean footage from previous films, as is the usual practice with this series? Or do Mr. T and Dolph actually have new scenes as their aged characters? I find that interesting that it would cost money to show old footage when MGM already owns the property (don't they?). I suppose that is just part of the vagaries of some performers' contracts.
Harry, please do Q&A's with other filmmakers and actors
by BDuncan
Dec 2nd, 2006
09:07:31 PM
It'd be great Harry, if this same type of (work and career related) Q & A thing can also be regularly or occasionally done with other filmmakers and actors (whether the film director, producer or actor suggests it, or don't suggest it at all, but Harry and Mori offer it to them, if they're interested, over maybe 1 or 2 weeks, rather than 3 weeks). In almost all cases, the filmmaker or actor obviously would do it only because they wish to plug a new film coming out, but it's still a worthwhile endeavor, offering AICN readers better insights into filmmaking, the film industry and things to be aware of.

The seashells are a reference to 'Demolition Man'. And with regards to the montage, even if the character is dead and he is using old footage, I believe he needs the actor's permission. It's a union thing. Crispin Glover sued the makers of the Back to the Future sequels when they used clips of him without his permission.

by TheRealRatigan
Dec 2nd, 2006
09:47:06 PM
wait, I can't believe I said "analyzing"...the practicality of the three seashells method. For the sake of this exercise, I'm with you though; what Sly says the writer told him is what we might imagine.(But not actually DO, I say, are we man or ape?) But I always thought that the humor of the three seashells scene was in the primitive John Spartan calling the obviously advanced and future civilized technology "the three seashells", and that they obviously weren't simply three seashells. As you've vividly illustrated, we cannot reason that three seashells could be applied physically for said use. Now, metaphysically, perhaps?

the nature of the geeks (me included) on AICN is to be cynical about everything, but this was pretty fun! I hope more actors, like Sly (who now has my total respect) are as cool about the wonderful life thats been given to them, and do some more AICN Q&As.
Hey, EyeofPolyphemus...
by TheRealRatigan
Dec 2nd, 2006
10:08:40 PM
how can Carl Weathers be self-aware enough to appear in that SNL bit ("...the black guy from PREDATOR") poking fun at his own career, and then has the ego to tell his agent to holdup the production when ROCKY BALBOA wants to remind the world he was Apollo Creed? So they cut him from the movie, he's not getting paid, and denied his claim to fame by omission from his last chance to appear in another ROCKY. What did he have to lose? Now you won't see or hear Apollo Creed in the film at all, and Carl Weathers has himself to blame. If he was smart, he would have tried to work with Stallone by suggesting a new scene that would either flashback to a moment we've never seen, or exist as a dream of training with his best opponent for what Rocky knows is one last shot at glory. Could have been poignant.

I have always liked what I saw of him, but now that I've read this Q&A, I have a great respect for him. He seems very down to earth. I like that he as gone out of his way to interact with his fans and answer questions that don't seem like the canned talk-show interviews. About this whole Apollo thing?
by HammeredGuy
Dec 3rd, 2006
12:00:14 AM
They have to get Apollo's permission to use old footage of him? I'd imagine the studio owns the rights to it and could just throw it in there. How did Michael Moore get away with showing George Bush footage? I guess different rules for documentaries. I can't believe Apollo said no to that. He just had to say yes and get a cheque in the mail for doing nothing. Now he won't get invited to the premiere and there was going to be free food there probably. He is Apollo Greed. I've lost all respect for him. I'm glad Rocky won that race on the beach.

I seem to recall a big bruhaha with Crispin Glover about footage of him being used in BACK TO THE FUTURE II'sprom equence. I assume studios are squeamish about not having permission nowadays. The practice of needing permission and paying actors for the appearance may go back further than that. i am not enough of a Hollywood historian to know.

by Omegaman
Dec 3rd, 2006
02:53:02 PM
I dont think there is a real answer. Its just suppose to be funny because it sounds so strange. What the writer told Stallone is just suppose to be a joke because that sounds so low-tech and you imagine something more futuristic. I think I know where the writer got the idea though, and thats from those soaps that look like seashells that you find in bathrooms. Heres my answer though: one shell shoots soapy water, one shoots rinse water, and one blows air.

Maybe Ivan's appearance in the montage is from the time of Rocky IV, not something recent. Although I could very easily buy into Rocky forgiving Ivan over the course of 15 plus years. Ivan was very young at the time of Rocky IV, like in his early 20s, and he was clearly a "tool" in a Russian political machine that was using sports to test genetic engineering techniques. So when Ivan killed Apollo, he was very much like a guy whacked out on PCP--very very strong and not very possessed of a "normal" mind.

He said "Apollo Creed is not in ROCKY BALBOA because he wanted many thousands of dollars for a two-second piece of he and Rocky boxing. Unfortunately we couldn’t afford it." APOLLO CREED is not in Rocky Balboa because HE wanted too much money. He's clearly making fun of the character. Which is even funnier considering he's DEAD. And "Then again, what ever happened to loyalty?" is referencing the fact that Apollo and ROCKY, the CHARACTERS, were best friends. Now dead. Though I'm glad as well that Rocky beat his ass in that race on the beach that day.
