While I was not a huge fan of the preceding seasons of Angel, which I watched out of loyalty to the whole Buffy thing, I agree season 5 was some very good television indeed. It is strange and perplexing that it was cancelled when things were going so well. Also, I was kind of keeping my fingers crossed that Spike was going become a real boy, but it was not meant to be.

And by "splurge", I mean spend money - it has nothing to do with bodily fluids (even though it sounds like it). And the best thing about Angel getting canned after five seasons was that it DID end at it's peak, and didn't spiral into mediocrity or utter crap (yes, that's all personal opinion). Ah screw it, I'm getting the Monty Python set, damn it. And Venture Bros.

Hey Herc! Have you even watched BONES?
by LordEnigma
Nov 28th, 2006
04:37:30 AM
If you had, then you would know that this show is far more a relationship drama than anything else. The crimes they solve are heightened only by the characters on this show. No six characters on TV are like BONES, Ceely, Hodgins, Angela, Zach, and Saroyan. They are rather unique in a genre, that barely ever has anything unique about it. So, if you want to put the bad mouth to a show that I love, have some collaborative data. If not, you are no better than a fanboy. I thought you were cool, Herc? What happen?

As what Target stores offered the two days after Thanksgiving. Almost all of the Simpsons seasons sets, all but the last season of 24, and all seasons of Family Guy - $16 each. Jaw-dropping good deal, especially for the 24 sets. I cleaned up, as I had not picked any of these up previously. Well, the Monty Python set price is as good, I guess.

Is the $27.99 price tag per season new? I thought I had already gotten excited about it before. Is there any reason to think it may drop even more, maybe to the $20 or so price range, like Buffy did? Speaking of which, are those $20 per season slim cases of Buffster still available?

That is very good news about Twin Peaks. I have been eyeing the season 1 box set for a while now, but it felt pointless without season 2. It has seemed very strange to me that we can get DVD box sets of Dukes Of Hazzard and the Gummi Bears, but no full release for Twin Peaks or Larry Sanders. P.S. Apologies to Dukes Of Hazzard fans and four-year-olds. No offense intended.

I've had all the Monty Python on dvd since 2001. Money is no object for the Python. Only bought them due to severe withdrawel issues when A&E started airing them instead of Comedy Central. Comedy Central showed 2 episodes every weekday at 7am back to back. A&E though one episode a week would be a good idea. IT WASN'T. I was forced to buy these things man. I think the Free Masons had someything to do with.

Only Season 5 of Angel was good?...
by DanielKurland
Nov 28th, 2006
02:50:34 PM
Come on. I'll admit that season one meanders, and the stuff with Kate isn't that good, but the rest of the series is phenomenal...Season 2 with Angel going dark, firing everyone, "Somehow, I just don't seem to care", burning Darla and Druscilla....Season 3 with the fucking amazing entry of dark Wesley, Angel smothering him, him getting his throat slit, Waiting in the Wings, "THE FATHER WILL KILL THE SON"!?!? Come on....Season 4 is just perfect television, the entire thing was great, Spin the Bottle, Home, Apocalypse, Nowish and mainly the fight at the end of it, just the concept of having Angelus, Faith, and Dark Wesley all around at the same time is too much to handle. Season 4 was incredible. Sure there were mis steps like a lot of what was done with Cordelia, I know a lot of people didn't like Connor, but it was still amazing stuff. Angelus's laugh at the end of Awakening is enough to redeem an entire season. In my opinion Seasons 3/4 were just as good, if not better than anything Buffy ever did.

Gotta join DK and give some props to earlier seasons...The arc to end Season 2 ranks up there with anything on Buffy, Waiting in the Wings is fantastic, as was much of Season 3. Season 4...There's individual episodes that are highly entertaining, but I think I fall in the camp with many that feel look back at the whole arc and realize that very little of it ends up making much sense. The Super-Cordy explanation only goes so far...You're telling me that Supervamp Angel, with his ridiculously powerful sense of smell, couldn't smell Manny's blood ANYWHERE on Cordy or the clothes? Oh, did she put a whammy on him too like she supposedly did with Lorne in the cell? If she was as powerful as all that, then the silly mechanations with the Beast and Angelus and all that just don't hold any water. So it kinda throws a big ol' damper on the whole thing for me, because the pay-off was ultimately quite silly. The idea was fine, but it was way too obvious that it wasn't planned out that way.
And Bones, this season....

03:36:22 PM
Has improved considerably and the cast is really playing well off of each other now. I wouldn't put it up with my favorite shows, but it's definitely not bad at all. And 'Ellen'? The last season sucked for the same reason all the other seasons sucked. The show never knew what the hell it wanted to be, was never invested in its characters enough to be character-driven, and wasn't goofy or witty enough to be situation or pure comedy-driven. It was a soulless and unfunny mess most of the time.

DanielKurland and CatVutt bring some much needed gravitas to this talkback. As good as Season 5 of Angel was, you CANNOT forget the awesomeness of the previous seasons. The arc that plays out over seasons 3 and 4 gets my vote as one of the coolest in any show. And Angel going dark in Season 2 was pretty awesome too. And lets not forget some great episodes from season 1, like the pilot episode ("Can you fly?" *kicks vamp in rolling chair out of skyscraper window*) and "To Shanshu in LA". Season 5 was good, it just had a few too many clunkers and standalones for me, especially after the arcy goodness for s3 and s4 (Why We Fight was especially bad). However, in season 5 "You're Welcome" was an awesome and sad goodbye episode, and "Smile Time" might just be one of my all-time favorite episodes of any TV show EVER. I need to get all the eps of this show on DVD... gotta look for some deals!

What makes season 4 of Angel even cooler...
by DanielKurland
Nov 28th, 2006
05:29:35 PM
is the fact that the entire season takes place over like one week. Everything just goes to hell, and Spin the Bottle just has so much greatness...the sequence where Wesley, Fred, and Gunn, are all stationary, and the camera just zooms between them all...Gunn threatening Wesley and then his spike popping out, "What happened to you man?" "I had my throat slit and all my friends abandon me" COME ON, that is just so fucking awesome. Wesley stabbing that chick who won't give information and then turning the knife, Wesley bursting through the window of the prison with Faith, "You okay?" "Five by five". I admit that Cordelia beign evil was dumb and poorly executed, and that I personally really didn't like Jasmine at all, but I'm not going to let those things supercede the greeatness of the rest of the season. At least praise the Wesley/Lilah interplay. And come on, the ending of Awakening where The Beast dies, how many of you were like, "Wow, they wrapped that up really quickly" and then boom, not only is he not dead, but things have gotten a whole lot more hopeless. I suppose everyone is entitled to hate it, but jsut the fact that seasons 3 and 4 are essentially one arc is ambitious as hell and the way the dark tone was so consistently kept was so well executed. All I know is that when Angel started in season one, it was a "chore" to watch, but once the mid point of season 2 came, I not only enjoyed it, but I eagerly anticipated it...How heartbreaking is it to see Wesley and Fred have that wonderful embrace at the end of Smile Time with the self esteem song playing, only to have him lose her the next episode. It's all so heartbreaking, and Hole in the World is probably Whedon's best episode, the whole thing with the caveman/astronaut fight, to Gunn ending up in the exact same situation as Wesley did in season 3, and Fred jusr re-iterating quotes she's said from the rest of the series. Sorry for rambling, and to see how some of these Whedon fanboys act is embarrassing to me at times, but when I just get down and think about this series as a whole, it really was fucking fantastic. "The Father Will Kill the Son" is one of the most pivotal moments in TV for me, right up there with, "Gordon, you're wearing my shirt" from Sports Night.
I just realized how long my last post was, sorry...

Don't get me wrong, all these seasons had their moments. I liked very much what they did with Darla and Wesley, the Pylea thing was great (and features the best creator cameo ever), and there were a couple of decent new characters like Lorne and Skip. That said, they ladled an awful lot of crap into the mix. There was Connor (the eternal chump), Holtz (Angel's great enemy is - a short, paunchy, middle-aged man?), and Justine (the vampire slayer!). There was the endless back and forth kill Angel/don't kill Angel with Wolfram and Hart, not to mention all the damn prophecies. They ruined Cordelia in season 4. And then there was Jasmine, the plot device to end all plot devices, who was apparently responsible for just about everything that happened from seasons 1 through 4. The only good thing about this character was she effectively swept away all of the awful plot points that had been collecting like dirty dishes for the past four years. Season 5 was good, though, but I think I said that already.

Angel - character development
by turketron
Nov 29th, 2006
08:39:49 AM
I am just thinking about that show, and how much insane character development there was over the course of the series. Think about how much Wesley, Cordelia, Fred, Gunn, Angel, Dharla, Lorne, and even Connor (the eternal chump, lol.. maybe not as much change as the others) evolved during the series. Just think of the way that Wesley went from a bumbling idiot weakling to a strong, dark, gun-toting badass. And who wouldn't evolve, after the stuff they had all experienced. Now if only they could do something similar with Charlie on Lost...

If there was one thing I can say Angel got completely right, it was Wesley. That was some quality character development there, and a great performance from Alexis Denisof. I loved him as a bumbling wimp and I still loved him as a bitter, heartbroken badass. Good work, writers of TV's Angel. That's a joke you made about Gunn, though, right? Gunn? The writers themselves even gave up on Gunn. In fact, for season 5, it was like they threw away the old character altogether and just had J August Richards play some new character who is also called Gunn but is not the old Gunn you remember from previous years.
Buffy & Angel.. the best and second best shows ever
by YouIgnorantGeeks
Nov 29th, 2006
11:43:04 AM
Thats all there is too it. For me all the seasons of both shows rocked... but I like them more as they went along. For instance most people say season 3 was Best for Buffy..... But I would say for me its A tie between 5 (GLORY BEST VILLAIN EVER!) 6 and 7... with 3 close behind. Season 4 was my least favorite. I hated Riley and that stupid Adam. But upon watching it again it was alot better. Same thing with Angel. I HATED GUNN & CONNER. But upon watching the shows over again I didnt mind them as much, or came to like them. I am even pretty sure that I originally didnt like season 5 - until my future daughter's name Illyria showed up - but now I think it was the best season. Illyria needs her own anything.. book, movie, show, whatever. I think its just hard to pick a favorite cause it will keep changing, and seasons youd didnt like as much when first aired seem alot better when you go back to them. Oh, and Bones kicks ass aside from stupid ass Cam and the uh... whats their names... the girl and the damn orange bearded guy kissing. Their good characters on their own but the idea that SHE is into HIM (not that shes the hottest person herself, but come on) bothers me, but not as much as the sight of that damn orage beard covering her face. Its so nasty. But Bones kicks butt too. Its nice to see some alums doing well. How I Met Your Mother is frigging awesome!!!!!!! And it got Nick Andopolis and Doogie in it too!!!

is when he is playing guitar and singing and Angel is just being so jealous and petty, "I mean, pick a genre!". I'd love so much for an Angel movie, but Boreanaz has made it clear he is ashamed of all of that (I don't know why, the show made him, and his best work is in it), so if they could find a way to do it without Angel, it'd maybe happen. I don't give a fuck, just put Wesley, Illyria, Lilah, and Lindsey in a room for 90 min.

I didn't like this Lindsey at first, but I liked him more as he went on. My favourite thing about him, though, was his death. That was great. All that time spent obsessing over Angel and he gets killed by Lorne? That was a very nice piece of writing, I thought. Nothing goes right for the guy, and he can't even get killed the way he wants. P.S. I did not know that about Mr Boreanaz being ashamed of Angel. Is that true? The only thing he should be ashamed of is his first season on Buffy. He was AWFUL in that. He definitely improved in subsequent years, though.

5.3 I think. That was a great standout episode from the first half of the season. The horror movie tone is captured perfectly and Spike gets to play the full on hero, no Buffy to impress no ulterior motives, he even make a big personal sacrifice. And Fred gets to show her genius chops, and she gets a shower scene. Plus great lines. "I'm a vamire/ghost I bloody invented afraid of the dark." "You don't know what happens. Where he goes when goes when he dissapears. He told me. He' going to Hell." "Yeah." "Makes sense." "Kind of figured." "Never really liked you Liam even when we were evil." "I kind of liked your poems." "You like Manilo."

I just picked up the STEVE McQUEEN Collection for $17.88 ( BULLITT 2 Disc SE + THE GETAWAY DE + PAPILLON + TOM HORN + NEVER SO FEW + THE CINCINNATI KID) and they have the Original KONG collectors tin with KING KONG 2 Disc SE & SON OF KONG & JOE YOUNG for $17.88. Love them encheapened DVD sets!
