Careful Pipple, you might actually have to THINK to enjoy this! That first write-up is one of the best I have ever read about this anime. I've seen it twice and still find new things to enjoy every time. Bless the Japanese! Congrats to the winners

What is emo? Am I too old to grasp this new fangled slang? Is it an acronym? "Evil Monkey Obediance"? Is it a noun? Or a verb? Should it be capitalized... "Emo"? Does it mean depressing? Or something? I toss these questions into the depths of the internets.
I used to think Emo

was just that My Chemical Romance/Funeral For a Friend/"I'm middle class in the suburbs, but I'm gonna whine about it coz my rich parents did't spend any time with me"-type of music.;P

But now people use it to belittle anything that requires thought, dealing with emotional situations or things that Emos have co-opted (i.e. Donnie Darko, Nightmare Before Christmas, J-Rock, some anime)

It's so annoying. All these moronic labels. "Oh that's emo" "she's just a chav"

People need to stop generalizing, stop using catch-all labels and prejudging things they know frak-all about!

P.S. The description I gave of Emo-music was tongue in cheek.

Serial Experiments Lain is awesome.

Good work Johnno and Lain/Di (Lain of the Net?) you guys know your stuff. You seem like people who it would be fun to converse with.

Peace.

I did write a preamble in which I talked about my fascination with the duality of certain fictional characters that I have come to identify with. The first one was Mr. Spock (when I was little) because he seemed to be surrounded by people who he did not always totally understand and yet because of his dual heritage was expected to by some. Later when I got into anime I was told that if I watched SEL I would be messed up by it. When I saw it I was attracted to a character who seemed to want to be part of the world she was in but was having trouble fully participating. Because of a condition I have I have found it hard at times to completely understand all the nuances of communication with other people and so I use "Lain" and "Lain Of The Net" most of the time online. To my friends I am just "Di" - short for "Diane" and sometimes "Dianimal". Although I am fascinated with duality - that is why I wrote it the way I did - I am just the one person unless you include my cat who seems to share my brain at times. :)

Hahahaha. It's a British term. The UK equivalent of "white trash", basically it's a classist term to describe working class whites here. It's more like a culture and a lifestyle now, people are proud to be chav. The majority of teenage chavs ARE frakking annoying though.

type chav into wikipedia.

p.s. the only reason I added it is coz I remember in a Who TB where someone wrongly called Rose a chav, I thought that the term was more or less known by TBers on your side of the atlantic. Oh well.

Wow, your even more interesting than I thought. I'm liking you're think-ouside-the-boxy-ness.:D< P>I agree that the theme/idea of duality is very interesting and I enjoy when it is employed in things I watch. Opens up all sorts of possibilities.

Also, how do you go about sharing your brain with your cat? Is it some sort of neko-mind Jutsu? Fusion-dance type thing? Or maybe Cait Sith style, where your cat sits on your head with a megaphone? ;P

Concerning Cats...

Cats have certain things they want and need. In the morning they want food, fresh water and the box cleaned and they want it NNNNEEEEEOOOWWWW!! Luna loves to have me stumble around before I even get a coffee doing these things for her and often I wonder who is in control. It is not something I desire so much as the Cat in question desires it when needed. If Cats ever begin to use their powers for other less benign reasons many of us will have a problem.
