I'm not a Transformers nerd, I don't care too much if they "ruin" Transformers (although they clearly are trying). But Don Murphy has cracked me up since the mid '90s when Natural Born Killers was being discussed on some small time movie bulletin board somewhere, and Mr. Murphy appeared out of nowhere to semi-literately (and all caps, I believe) tell me that I was an idiot, that I didn't know what I was talking about in saying that I preferred the Tarantino script to the finished movie, and then he listed a litany of weird attacks on Tarantino accusing him of plagiarism.

It was clear that the guy was a lunatic, so I enjoyed reading that Killer Instinct book and continuing to occasionally check up on his internet-rage incidents every couple of years. For a while I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt because I liked Apt Pupil, which he produced. I figured he was a crazed asshole with no clue about how to preserve his own credibility, but perhaps was trustworthy as a producer. But that ship has sailed - after From Hell and League of Extraordinary Gentleman we're still supposed to take this guy seriously? The only movies I like with his name on them are Apt Pupil and Bully, and you're going to have a hard time finding other people who like those movies. And yet the size of his ego and fury of his internet postings is unprecedented, as if he has some kind of record we should respect him for. After the undeniably disastrous League of Extraordinary Gentleman I'd say it's time to be humble for a while and try to prove yourself, but what do I know? It is a proven fact that Don Murphy is the only person on the internet who is not a pimply nerd living in his mom's basement reading comic books and playing with toys. What right do they have to criticize a guy who doesn't live in his mom's basement because he's rich from making horrible movies loosely based on those same comic books and toys?

Well, then the movie came out and it was a painfully idiotic mess. I didn't expect a respectful adaptation of the comic book, but it also failed as dumb popcorn entertainment for people who don't know the comic, and incidentally it was a huge, notorious financial flop that probably jeopardized other potential genre movies based on little known properties.

So it was a failure both artistically (important to us) and financially (important to you, I would think). Meanwhile, it got Alan Moore sued, infuriating him to the point where he no longer allows his name to even be included in the credits of movies based on his work. And supposedly it caused Steve Norrington, whose Blade is one of the best comic book movies to date, to leave the business. (At any rate he hasn't made a movie since.)

Despite all this you still get royalty checks when they dump that piece of shit on cable, so you're proud of it? Gee, I wonder why people don't have faith that the Transformers movie will be worth watching?

Yeah. Not a lot of gifted writers or thinkers there.

2. Harry Knowles. Has a genuine love of film matched by few, surpassed by none. Is charming, funny, self-deprecating, and doesn't take self too seriously.

3. Any given talkbacker. With few exceptions, talkbackers are not burnouts who can't keep personal staff because of a toxic personality/ personality disorder. Many talkbackers of many ages have the POTENTIAL and CREATIVITY to make something interesting, unlike Don "Time to Kill Another Promising Property for the Almighty Dollar" Murphy
