So, Sly, if Rocky Balboa bombs, would you contemplate going back to making softcore porn movies again? There's a big market for GDILF'S!

Well, at least there is around my girlfriend who ended up leaving me for my granddad and moving onto his yacht and making love to him every night while he plays Nat King Cole tunes on repeat and every time I listen to Autumn Leaves I think of her and try and remember where I put the rat poison...

Erm...sorry about that. Ignore post and replace with: ADRIAAAAAAAN!

Stallone so obviously is just trying to drum up the geek support for Rocky VI. He knows the net is where the buzz is, and he knows if he wins us over, his movie may not tank. I remember when this site used to use Hollywood against itself. Now this site is just being used by the studios. ...and yet, I keep coming here...

You're kidding right? To give this site's readership 20 days of 10 questions a day - asked by the readership of SYLVESTER STALLONE? That is about the coolest thing we've ever done. This wasn't some call from a publicity worker or even a studio boss... This was THE MAN himself - saying that he'd never done a big online interaction before - and he remembered when he and I hung out together in Austin and wondered if I'd be willing to do this with him.

There will be goofy fanboy questions in here - but there will also be some pretty damn intelligent questions as well as confrontational questions asked. Ultimately this is an on-going interview where you guys get to stand up and ask the question you'd ask if you were talking to Stallone. That's cool. Is it a promotion for ROCKY BALBOA? Absolutely. But the test screening on the film has been extremely positive - and Robert Rodriguez told me he loved the cut that Stallone showed him back in April... and Robert isn't always so nice when it comes to stuff he's seen early... BUT - just so you know. The first time I ever spoke to Sly - I was driving back home after a press screening of some flick - when my phone rings and it's Stallone. He wanted to have me do a 10 day set visit of that car racing movie of his. And write about the visit each day - uncensored. I told Stallone that I had to read the script before giving that sort of coverage to any film. He said he'd have to ask the studio if it was ok to send the script - and I told him, don't worry - I have sources, I'll get it on my own. I got the script, which was written by Sly - and I knew it was Renny Harlan directing. I read it - it just didn't seem to work for me, and when he called me a week later to see if I would come, I told him... "I read your script - it just didn't seem to work for me. I'm not really a car guy and I think it is all going to come down to how it is visualized, it could be cool, but I can't see it. I'd rather do something with you in the future - where it was something I could honestly get behind." And Stallone respected that, and stated he'd never been turned down before, but he respected me for being honest with him.

For This. I love ROCKY 1-4, I hate 5. Hate it. I'm honest about that, but I read this script and this is a very solid script - that has tested extremely well - and that's trailers give me goosebumps, because when I was a kid - the ROCKY movies were every bit as big as STAR WARS in my world. I love that character.

To have this opportunity on what will, in all likelihood, be the very last ROCKY movie.... to give my audience the ability to ask the man any question they can think of? That's what this site is all about. Getting Hollywood and it's creators to step up to the plate. Now it's up to y'all to give it your best shot!

Years after Demolition Man, I'm still wondering...How do you use the three seashells?

You've delved into the world of reality television, is there any chance you'd consider a guest role or stint on a scripted show? And if so, how about giving us a hint as to what shows they'd be?

Name your favorite film of each of the following action stars... Arnie, Willis, Van Damme, Seagal.

I'll be eating Thanksgiving leftovers for awhile, excluding turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie, whats Thanksgiving dish?

Let's say Rob Schneider was to do a Over The Top parody involving thumb wrestling, would you cameo?

Do you think it was a good decision to market a R-rated franchise like Rambo to children with the cartoon?

Will you bring back the mullet in Rambo IV?

Given your love for boxing, any chance you'd consider doing another film about the sport after Rocky's finished? How about adapting the classic videogame Punch-Out!?

What do you regret more? The robot in Rocky III or Rocky V itself?

Which had the better Rambo spoof? Weird Al's UHF or Charlie Sheen's Hot Shots: Part Deux?

Ignore the snot nosed 15 year olds who talk shit about Stallone as though they have any clue what a movie star is. Where is the Sly Stallone of their generation? There isn't one. Maybe Vin Diesel? Who would go as star stuck as you or me getting to talk to Sly Stallone. They have no clue how cool it is that he is offering what he is offering. He is doing it for the love of movies. The same thing that brings most of us to this site. Those of us who have actually had our balls drop know how fucking cool this is. Thanks for saying 'no' to the car movie so that one day you'd get to say 'yes' to this kind of unpresidented coolness!

Sly already guest starred on a scripted show. Stallone is a very good friend of James Caan and he has a recurring role on the show "Las Vegas". I think you can get the past seasons on DVD now. Also, a couple of weeks ago this site showed some pictures of Stallone doing some pre-production work on Rambo IV, and indeed, the mullet was starting to grow to its full-fledged form. Will he continue to work it's what I would ask him, or are Rocky VI, and Rambo IV the last act?

1) In Rocky IV, to me, the training scene was the linchpin of the movie because Drago was used advanced technology and was very cold and detached like a machine, whereas Rocky communed with the land, spirit, and people of Russia in his training, and that helped him connect with the hearts of the Russian people. Was that your intention, in order to bring the message that we've advanced further technologically than we have spiritually and we need to focus more on the latter? 2) Was it hard pretending Estelle Getty was your mom in 'Stop or My Mom will shoot' since she's such a hot piece of ass? 3) Stallone, I would like to see you do more dramatic roles, with less action. Perhaps as part of an ensemble cast. Would you ever do that?

they wouldn't fight to the death. they would team up and break out of the room and kill the people who put them there. of course... chuck norris would die in the course of breaking out. since he's not really in the same league. now. if it were sly and arnold and rob snyder... that's a different story altogether.

and others... True, Foreman was 45 when he won. BUT... I will go ahead and state again something I have said a couple of times on this site. In the older days, for many reasons, heavyweight boxers fought well into their fifties. Top boxers didn't make the kind of money they make today and they had to keep on fighting, so yes, in those days you could have a fight between a fifty-year-old and a thirtysomething-year-old, so this has actually happened. Also, last year George Foreman said that the quality of heavyweight champions was crap and that he was gonna make another comeback and win back the title. A fight was set, Foreman even started training for it, I mean, this was actually happening, and Foreman is what now? 55?(I think that's what Rocky will be in the movie). Then one day Foreman came home from training and the wife said that if he ever fought again she would divorce him. She was serious, so he stopped and there ended the comeback for good. But know one thing. If Foreman announces tomorrow that he will fight Lennox Lewis if Lewis is willing and comes out of retirement, or one of the champions, say Shannon Briggs, millions would tune in to watch, and the fight would get massive coverage. We are talking pay-per-view, Vegas, the-whole-nine-yards, and millions of dollars in revenue. We are talking real life here now. And no one will doubt him again; millions of dollars were made on his first comeback. Now, By most expert's accounts, George Foreman is among the top-ten Heavyweight boxers who ever lived. In the movie world, Rocky is the greatest who ever lived, and like I said I haven't seen the film and I know Stallone is 60+, but I guess in the movie world of Rocky VI, Rocky will be 55 years-old, you know, just for the movie. So it's not that far-fetched when you factor in that if it were in real life promoters would put a ridiculous amount of money and move heaven and earth to put together a fight like that, 'cause Rocky(in the movies) and Foreman, Holyfield(in real life) put asses on the seats and on the couches at home. One final thing, did anyone see the fight between Evander Holyfield and Fres Oquendo two weeks ago? First punch thrown in the first round, as soon as the opening bell sounded, 44-year-old Holyfield drops 33-year-old Oquendo on his ass, to the utter shock of the crowd. Evander went on to win a decision over Oquendo, who is younger, taller, quicker and who weights more than Evander. And Oquendo isn't just a pushover. He's a solid heavyweight and used to be a number one contender. Don't be surprised to see "old man" Holyfield fight for the title after that victory. So it shouldn't be that difficult to suspend your disbelief, is it? So do that, suspend your disbelief and go watch and scream ROCKY! ROCKY! ROCKY! one final time for old time's sake. See you there. And with that...the rest is silence.

I didn't see Rambo's hair as looking especially coifed. by Bobo_Vision
Nov 25th, 2006
06:40:50 PM
This is something that I was curious about after watching the Rocky marathon on TV the other weekend...in the original Rocky, there's a scene where Rocky gets pissed off at one of the Goons he's working for because he keeps joking that he should take Adrian to the zoo. Then in Rocky II, he actually does take her to the zoo, and thats where he proposed to her. So my question is, was this a coincidence, or did Rocky actually take the advice of the Goon to take Adrian to the zoo?
And regarding Rambo's man-perm
by Bobo_Vision
Nov 25th, 2006
06:48:52 PM
As far as I'm concerned, that hair is an absolute must for that character. Without the hair, its not Rambo. Rambo with a haircut is Cobra. And a lot of homeless people have great heads of hair. Alcohol tends to burn out the liver, and without the liver, there is little testosterone, and testosterone is the culprit in male pattern baldness, so the theory that a homeless veteran couldn't have a beautiful man-perm is defunct.

Racism: canard or card?
by keepcoolbutcare
Nov 25th, 2006
09:12:12 PM
ok, Rocky is a brawler, no? I mean, from the devastating uppercut, quality body work and supernatural jaw, Rock-O, least up until the 2nd Clubber Lang fight, was a brawler, no arguments there...

Could it not be said that Apollo, in both fights but especially the second, particularly in the later rounds, "loses his head", forgets his gameplan, doesn't fight the smart fight, and that's why he loses? One can also make this claim for the first fight, but since he barely trained, since he looked upon the bout as a joke, all analysis, to me at any rate, is kinda wonky.

If that is indeed the (debatable) case, then one can, if one was so inclined, indeed bring up the racism angle, no? White guy with heart, guts, courage, able to take on and indeed best (with one fucking good eye to boot!) superior athlete, and, possibly, superior tactician? While Rock-O (at least until Lang II) couldn't really be considered a "heady" fighter, at least he used his assets to his advantage. Apollo, the fucking heavyweight champion of the world fer chrissakes, a man whom we could reasonably ASSume fought his share of brawlers similar to Rocky (although perhaps he had never faced a southpaw?) simply, what, forgot / abandoned all the sage training he had received leading up to the second fight and decided (in the later rounds especially) to slug it out with Rocky? Pretty fucking stupid, yes, and a (somewhat) valid source for the racism card. At the very least, can some of ya'll "Oh NOES! No racism in Rocky at all!" folks at least acknowledge that those arguments are (relatively) valid?

There's a reason why cats like Apollo (read Ali, minus the tricky conversion to Islam) decimated the brawlers that they faced, for boxing isn't called a "sweet science" for nothing. Peppering a man with piston like jabs for 3 minutes at a time, side stepping, constantly moving / circling (FOOTWORK!), avoiding clinches, refusing to go toe-to-toe, that's how a cat like Ali ended up the Greatest, leastwise before his forced retirement (arguable, I'd go with Jack Johnson, but whatevs).

Now, whoa, back those measly thoughts up kc, for didn't Ali v. Frazier (not only the first fight, heck, all 3 of 'em) prove that a brawler with a straight ahead style could get inside on a skilled tactician, so long as they're willing to take the inevitable punishment? And instead of Frazier, substitute Rocky Marciano (he kicked Joe Louis' ass!), another brawler, for Frazier, and, VOILA!

...
...
So, to sum up, I don't necessarily think the Rocky films are racist. Lots of things happen in the ring, or indeed any sporting event. Gameplans are abandoned, tactics change, ego (Apollo's true downfall) gets in the way. Simple minded Hollywood hokum, sure. A white mans power fantasy (if you grew up in Long Island during the 70's-80's, you know what I mean) of physically / intellectually besting the darkies...well, that's tricky. Sure, some simple minded fools get that from the flicks, consciously or subconsciously. Intended to be read that way? I don't think so. But I can see and respect some arguments to the contrary, and I can understand a lot of the ire these films raise in a minority viewer.

But...BUT...if the characters were reversed, if Apollo was the working class schmo and Rock-O was the heavyweight champion of the world, I don't think the film would've even been made.
And that's racism.

Kidding of course. If I were to ask a question it would be "Do you kill off Rocky at the end of this, giving Mason a knockout blow before collapsing from a brain anneurism or something and dying all heroic and such?" That'd be my approach. Give the character his big adieu doing what he loves.

Why not take better, but smaller roles in other movies with someone else as the leading man?. You did it in Copland. Build yourself into another type of actor. Try something other than the action actor. Also, Now that your profile in Hollywood has diminished a bit and you have time to reflect, what advice would go give young filmmakers who might be lucky enough to achieve some of the fame that you achieve in the 80's?. Were you happy how you handled the fame that came your way? How do you explain the current position you're in? Did Hollywood push to make action movies longet than you should have or do you share some of the blame? Lastly, What kind of career would hope for in the future? lates.

Foreman, Holyfield, and Balboa
by abcdefghijklmnop

It's not that hard to imagine someone trying to exploit an old fighter's name. What is hard to imagine is that the fighter would be able to deliver the goods. The thing people forget about Foreman's 1994 victory, is that he had pretty much lost every round before the knockout. But Stallone allegedly patterned Rocky 6's fight after the one in Rocky 2. It's completely absurd to expect a 60 year old fighter to engage in an outright war with someone half his age. You could hardly call Holyfield-Oquendo a war. Many had trouble even calling it a fight! And Rocky will be 60 in the new film, because it's set a number of years after Adrian's death in 2000. (The first film was set in 1975, and he was 30. Rocky II was set a year later, and the announcers refer to him as "31 years old".) Another factor people overlook is that both Foreman and Holyfield were still fighting regularly in their late 30's/early 40's. However, depending on how you interpret Rocky V's warped timeline, Rocky will have been retired anywhere from 15-20 years. And he has brain damage. And a bad eye. But the biggest problem with theoretically comparing Rocky to Foreman or Holyfield? It's still a 15 year difference in age! If it were possible for fighters to compete on a championship level at 60, you can bet there would be plenty of examples to point to. One look at the current heavyweight division will reveal plenty of sad old guys still trying to hang on. But I know, it's only a movie/fantasy...that is until someone starts trying to justify it. Only then does it become ridiculous. LOL

There's a user with a handle milajovovich, and it's most likely nothing more than a handle, hence my use of the ;). But, back in the now deleted Lost talkback, the Rose episode that gueststarred Wayne Pygram who played Scorpius on Farscape, this person wrote something like "I always wanted to gueststar on Farscape, but I never use my fame in Hollywood to get roles.", now you could take it two ways, either that really was milla (anythings possible), or most likely this person was fucking around. There's really no way to prove it was or it wasn't her.

Hopefully when Resident Evil 3 comes out she/he will return.

You know Yackbacker...now that you mention it...you're right. His depiction was racist. I've always defended it though because I've always said in my mind that he's merely showing an honest portait of the characters in those worlds he creates, but when blacks are hated in every single world a director creates...one must start to wonder. Even his most recent fare, 'The Departed', set in notably redneck Boston had some racist cracks about blacks. That wasn't meant to rhyme btw.

Harry - Thanks for setting this up. I haven't always been the friendliest person on AICN, and have disagreed, but I've always appreciated and respected the site, if for no other reason, your humanitarian work to kill the McG helmed Superman, and for putting Hollywood foot to fire more often than any other site when they try to betray the geeks. And let's face it - deep down, in the heart of everyone raised in the 70s and/or 80s, you've wanted Rocky to stand up and go the distance just one last time. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I hope it gets whatever it justly deserves.

I agree Harry, it is one of the coolest things AICN has ever done. I love how all the fans get in a twist that Hollywood never listens, then do a 180 when something like this happens. Really all some people want to do is take shots from the balcony at everyone who passes below. Also, given what goes on on this site ... damn. Gutsy call Sly. The only thing I ask Harry, is make sure you don't give Sly all softballs. One "typical" AICN question out of 10 would be a joy to see Sly field, in the same way Kevin Smith did it a while back. Re: Scorsese and supposed racism
by Chief Redcock
Nov 28th, 2006
03:40:43 PM
I don't think Marty's racist. Boxcar Bertha (early Scorsese) contains a very intelligent portrayal of racial and other forms of prejudice as they existed in depression-era America. The other examples you note (in Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, etc) can be explained as a director trying to portray the perspectives of racist characters.... Travis Bickle, Jake LaMotta, and the unnamed guy in the taxi may be racist, but that does not make Scorsese himself a racist. Paul Schrader himself has stated that he deliberately wrote Travis as a racist character in order to partly make the film a critique of American racism. Also, in the Aviator, Howard Hughes' tragic flaw is an irrational fear of black people... I don't know if it's historically accurate, but it does convey how groundless racial fears can seriously screw a person up. Once again, Marty's heart seems to be in the right place. His films are always complex... you won't find any simple "racism is bad" messages in his films... but he isn't afraid to go into the mind of a racist character in order to debunk their outlook. If you want to find racial biases in prominent directors' work these days, a much better case could be made for Brian DePalma, David Lynch, and possibly Quentin Tarantino. DePalma often portrays blacks as thuggish, violent, and deviant... look at Dressed to Kill and Black Dahlia for examples. Lynch's Wild at Heart is filled with awkward racial moments, and in Lost Highway he totally plays Richard Pryor's disability for laughs. There's definitely something going on there. QT isn't racist, I don't think, but his portrayal of black characters does strike me as highly reductive, and clearly the work of a white filmmaker who doesn't have first hand knowledge of what he's depicting... I guess that's postmodernism for you.

I heard that in one of the alternate scenes in Demolition Man you shoot a cryocon. Which one? A black guy or the Japanese guy when pursuing Wesley Snipes underground? Also Could you tell us of your fight scene with Jesse Ventura in Demolition Man if it was filmed? I was very disappointed not to see you fight Jesse Ventura physically in Demolition Man. I heard about in the footage of Demolition Man there was you with Jesse “The Body” Ventura slugging it out. I read the comic book adaptation and after your character kills 3 of the new recruits your character fights Jesse Ventura’s character with him choke holding and than be squat pressed and than shot with the gun pointed over the shoulder. Was that filmed when you do that to a cryocon henchman that you aim the gun over your shoulder?
