It wasn't just "love," it was the sacrificial love of his mother. Pay attention to your classical mythology...sacrificial love is powerful. To call it "weak" shows complete ignorance, especially given the intriguing way Rowling worked it into the later books.

I thought it was weak...well...I thought it was something worse...but as zacdilone pointed out, Rowling has explained that a lot better in the following books. I wonder how they´re gonna pull off OotP on screen. They pulled off the last one...just barely. This one is gonna be alot tougher.

How many people, who just watched the trailer, has NOT read the book? I only ask because of some of the comments I've read about what people hope is in this film. If you've read the book, you needed ask. Unfortunately, what is NOT in this film is: Dobby, SPEW, Weasley's Wizard Wheezes and "Weasley is our King".

To say this looks like every other freaking Harry Potter movie. I made the mistake of seeing the second one on my birthday, and that sucked 3 hours of it away. We only get 24 hours of birthday a year, and i wasted 3 of them on that? I have been sour on the franchise ever since. Yeah, I tried to watch the third one, but at one point I just asked myself "why am I watching this?" and turned it off.

Yeah I really don't like the saturated color in this movie. I'm really getting a quirky Schumacher Batman vibe from this movie. I wasn't expecting Bellatrix to look like Esmeralda meets bride of Frankenstein, or Sirius looking like Billy the Kid, or every single scene looking like it was shot inside a night club. The corny blue lightning striking as the WB logo appears is the final nail in my coffin. Really not liking where this is going. :( One thing I DO really like is the shaky camera effect which is pretty much in almost every scene. :)

I haven't read any H.P. book. I read a little bit of Chamber of Secrets since it was left with me, but I don't feel interested. I still haven't seen the first H.P. movie, although I saw the last two. Not that I'm putting down the books. One of my brothers and my sister have read them, I think, and they've been entertained. When I say 'I think' I mean, I don't know if they've read all the books, but they may've.

he'd be hot as shit. Gotta love that smooth pale rugby-player's build. I kind of like stupid boys too, in a fantasy kind of way. He's better get his kit off before the end of this thing. Well, at least his mouth isn't jerking all over the place like it used to (nothing suggestive was meant by that last statement). But the real news of the week, which has NOT been seen around here by men, anyway is the casting of (sigh of pure lust) Daniel Craig as Lord Asriel in His Dark Materials. He's got built pecs and ice blue eues, he's played gay guys and he is going to kill GOD! My dream boyfriend.

create a 1 hr x 10 episode per book mini-series. The movies aren't that bad but it's simply impossible to include all the storylines and capture the richness of all the characters in a 3 hr movie. Put it on the SciFi channel but ONLY if they give it to someone talented like Ron D. Moore and his crew. Or Peter Jackson, if he wants a TV project.

He keeps getting uglier and uglier every year, and hence more difficult to watch and take seriously on the big screen. Also, let's not forget that he is a piss-weak, unco-ordinated girl with a micropenis and the invention of a dumb-ass crackpot wannabe named JK Rowling. God, just mentioning that name gives me the shits. What an ugly, old, wrinkly british hag with a stupid, uninspired story raking in the millions 'cause dumbass kids don't have the patience and the intelligence to tackle Kant's Critique of Pure Reason. Now that's a book worth reading. Hey, I won't be a hypocrite. I've seen all the movies, mainly 'cause I'm a film buff and it is my responsibility as a future film director to watch this shit, mainly because they are popular films. One has to understand the audience after all. And speaking of Rowling, gosh, isn't she a fucking ugly british hag? I bet her pussy is wrinkly and stretched and crusty and it reaks of rotting oysters. Only the feeble mind of a female can conjure up something as abysmal and disgusting as Harry Potter, master of the fairies who can't even piss straight without leaking on his trowsers. That's supposed to be inventive story telling? Hey I tell you what you dumb ass ugly bitch. Just because your title character isn't the generic world saving brave and masterful hero, doesn't mean he isn't one dimensional and uninspired. He is just as cliche and ridiculous as any character Sylvester Stallone or Arnold Schwarzenegger plays. Harry Potter has the same shitty castrated expression on his ugly pale face and always reacts and talks the same way. And this guy is a multi-millionaire. Well, after the seventh book, this guy will not be in any other memorable movie, I can assure you of that. His shitty career will be over, once the shitty books are finally over as well. As for Emma Watson, well, she can act and she is pretty damn fine too. I predict great things for her in the future. Let's not even mention the toxic red-head. He just exists for comic relief anyway...

If they were only better like me, but no I always be better. Shit! I had better tell them all so! as a future film director you haven't made a film yet. Therefore, when you write something equal to Rowling's work, put together as good a cast as the actual directors of these films have and actually make a film that stands up to ANY of the Harry Potter films, come back. Yeah? Got a obstacle for him to overcome? Huh? Got a story brewing there? Working on, working on that for quite some time? Huh? Yeah, talking about that three years ago. Been working on that the whole time? Nice little narrative? Beginning, middle, and end? Some friends become enemies, some enemies become friends? It just got all of the pesky plot points out of the way so that Book 7 can end it all. It was the backstory book. It's her story to fuck up if you believe she did and I'd rather her do the story she wants than just to whip some shit out to appease people who have thier own expectations such as yourself anchorite. If you'd like you could do a fan faiction on what you think SHOULD have happened but really who reads that shit?

by Ribbons
Nov 19th, 2006
09:42:51 PM
It was a great self-contained book. In the grand scheme of things, however, I'm a little disappointed in the way the series has shaped up since Voldemort's return. He's been such a non-presence in the overall narrative.
Ribbons I see your point
by DOGSOUP
Nov 19th, 2006
11:59:30 PM
and I even agree that book 6 took me by suprise. But rereading it made me understand this is invaluable information for book 7. Voldemort has been in the shadows since he came back but I never really figured him as a hands on villain. The novels are Harry's perception and I love that we don't know what's going on until he does. I'll be satisfied with Voldemort's non-presence if when his presence is REALLY there he fucks things up scarringly like killing the entire Weasley Clan or something mind-blowingly horrific. JK Rowling isn't perfect but she's got such a gripping story I'm invested until the end. And aren't we all glad she's taken a stance that this WILL be the end? To me it's refreshing to know Harry will never be Lestat.

Rowling is a good plotter but a lousy writer
by rimshot
Nov 20th, 2006
11:21:49 AM
There, I said it. Go ahead, fuck with me. Hey, I'm like everyone else, I buy the books because I have to find out what happens (which is why I give Rowling credit for plotting), but I have not been able to reread anything she's written. Her books are the most unmagical books about magic I've ever read. But I've reread Tolkeins' "The Hobbit" and Lewis' Narnia books over and over because their prose is so vivid. Man, when J.R.R. wrote about Bilbo feeling a dwarf-like "fierce and jealous love" for treasure, I was practically drooling myself. Made we want to crash-and-grab my local Tiffany's. But speaking of treasure, while I don't think much of her writing skills, I think Rowling's success is cool. A real Cinderella story. She turned coal (her writing talent) into a diamond (her incredible income). Can't fuck with that.
Rowling's writing
by Ribbons
Nov 20th, 2006
11:38:36 AM
I would say that the first chapter of the first book was sufficiently magiical and mysterious. In fact the first book may have been the best in that regard because of all the necessary exposition, which Rowling infused with whimsy and cheek. But I guess I can see what you're saying.

I am a huge fan of the books, read and reread as well as listen to all of them on tape/cd. None of the movies have touched the atmosphere of the books. The first one came close, but each movie since has been a greater disappointment than the one before with Goblet a huge disappointment. I'll go see this one as will my wife and children, but expectations are low.
