Don't be fooled...This show's definitley not about football. Although football is a central element. I honestly see this as being the first high school drama to be nominated for best drama as a television series during next year's emmy awards. 'Yes,' it's that good...
i'll admit it...the show is good.

it first looked like something for CW but I like the way its shot. Keep the camera on the hot cheerleader. 10 times hotter than the one on Heroes. Keep Harry away from her.

Easily the best new show of the season

I like Heroes and all, but the writing and characters on that show can be extremely uneven. Friday Night Lights is strong almost 99% of the time. I'm glad it finally got a mention on Coaxial, it deserves and audience, unlike the clunky and groan inducing Studio 60. Also the guy that plays Matt Saracen stands out in a fantastic cast.

I hope they don't try to turn it into something it's not because of it's relative success. Being a Limey I don't usually have any interest in High School Football but it's interesting enough to work despite that and even then I find myself getting wrapped up in the games which are pretty exciting to watch. It's certainly one of the best new shows this season, I prefer Dexter but I'll admit that Dexter has some weak acting in places unlike FNL which has got one of the most talented casts going. Oh and all the girls are HOT, like really hot.

Of all the shows I've watched this season, this is the one I feared cancellation the most. I actually don't really understand why it doesn't get higher ratings. An hour long drama about football with attractive young people? It's a no brainer. That being said, this show has heart and great characters.

possible reason for the ratings

I agree that the show should get better ratings than its getting and I'm glad it got a full season pick-up; it deserves a chance to find a bigger audience. But as for the crappy ratings? In a direct comparison to teen dramas the OC and One Tree Hill, it's doing much better than both. It's just that its on NBC so the expectations are higher. Maybe there's just not much of a market for high school dramas anymore. Still, I think this transcends the genre and I'm glad it'll be sticking around for now.

Bad Ratings Because the Network Sucks...

Not for nothing, but shows like Heroes and Friday belong on a younger skewing network like Fox. NBC is too old for the show. I could totally see Friday Night Lights thriving on The CW.

Friday Night Lights is a little more mature and finely produced than the crud that ends up on the CW. What the hell is the CW anyway?

I hope this pickup will show fence-sitters that they are missing something really worthwhile. I've never seen such realistic characters on a television show. Best acting, writing, directing, and music on television right now.

Overwrought teen drama, turgid acting, shitty soundtrack, hackneyed plotlines, racist characterizations and they can't even get the football right. It's One Tree Hill in Texas. I guess the show is great if you're a mentally challenged, thirteen year old girl, not so much if you're a grown up, or if you have a dick or if you know any fucking thing at all about football. At least they cut down on all the fucking Bible thumping and illegal school prayer. That alcoholic fullback is gay by the way. At least he should be. It would explain the character a lot better.

Err...touchdooooooown! As a complete and total football non-fan, I gotta say that "FNL" ROCKS. It's worthy of a season pickup and I'm damn glad it got it. Paul H and Giz: The CW picked up some more "Veronica" eps. Not a full season--yet--but something is better than nothing.

I'm from a small red-state town, and this show gets it right. Even though I'm really starting to get into Heroes, this is easily the best show of the new season. I'm glad it's getting a full-season pickup. I love the soundtrack, so I don't understand why it got bashed earlier. I love post-rock, and I think the opening credits song is pretty cool. Anyway, I hope this finds an audience.

Here's why I don't watch the show:

The adlets they show for it make it appear that it is designed for people who think that high school football is the high point of life. The adlets ALSO make it appear that the show doesn't mock that outlook with a series of Al-Bundy-type characters, but actually INDULGES that outlook and takes it seriously. Do I have the wrong impression here? Am I reading this show all wrong?

It's not designed for people that think high school football is the high point of their life, it's ABOUT people who think h.s. football is the high point of their life. yeah, it doesn't mock this, and that's the pathos that makes it so great: it's about simple people in a simple town...some of whom are talented, all of whom have heart...and most of whom will never leave the town and end up being caught up in the same loser cycle as everyone else, having nothing more to believe in than the "friday night lights." But rather than making fun of these people cynically (haha all they have is football) it celebrates what draws them together as a group. While still pointing out the futility of it as an individual (paralyzed kid, old champion quarterback who comes crawling back to town broke and in need of a job, etc.) Plus, it's expertly directed...scenes and characters are very real and lived in, very little seems staged or overdramatic like the "one tree hill" type shows. I'm an L.A. asshole and when I check my cynicism at the door every Tuesday night I watch one of the best shows on TV...right after the Wire, Galactica, 24, and Lost.
plus...

...about football, anyway. I loathe football. About "Friday Night Lights", though, I think it is one of, if not THE, best new show this season. And for the record, "BSG" is my favorite show, and I love "Heroes" and "Lost", too (still haven't caught "Dr. Who", however; I'm mulling whether or not TiVa--and I--have the capacity for another show...).
Glamorizes meatheads. Thumbs down.

The point of evolution is to grow AWAY from fratty, good 'ol boy, yokel proto fascism. It's why we are supposed to graduate and get the hell out of Dodge and become open minded and enlightened. Every time shows or movies like this appear it APPEARS as though some people are saying stay home, "stay mediocre", hold on to 16 as long as possible. In real Texas high school wastelands the girls aint this hot and the dialogue sure as hell aint this eloquent. If you are an exception--I apologize--but you aren't the mainstream.
