brad bird's bird....

Hey Peeps...gotta say about Brad Bird...something that people here tend to forget easily, but mistakenly so...

Despite the Iron Giant, besides The Incredibles...whenever one mentions Brad Bird, it's only fitting to remember his most important, and certainly most popular, contribution:

The Simpsons

NEVER forget that old Birdie got his big break being lovingly involved with much that is The Simpsons...as has many of Pixar's employees...no animated show in history has spawned such respect and innovation in the animated world (CG or otherwise) as The Simpsons has. AMAZING it's been almost 20 years...yet still hasn't quit?

Final note...yes, the show may still be past it's prime, but facts are facts. The modern iteration is still funny, and I'll take a castrated Simpsons over any of the pap that's currently still running (come back, 'o Futurama). But it ALSO must be said...that during it's hey-day run (my opinion seasons 3-9) the show was absolutely, matter-of-factly, positively UNTOUCHABLE. One of the best 'things' to ever come out my TV box and certainly the best animated show of all time, if not the best comedy. Those are earned acholades...anyone disagree?

p.s. if you're gonna mention Family Guy in the same sentence as The Simpsons, be sure to include the terms "inferior rip-off" and "historically irrelevant". At least when The Simpsons ripped off Flintstones they went all out (Monorail).

Nope, Brad Bird's big break was arguably his "Family Dog" for Amazing Stories. Burton did character designs, but just like Nightmare, he didn't direct it. As for the Simpsons, respect? Absolutely. Innovation in the animated world? I love the damn show, but ya gotta be fucking kidding me! Smart and funny writing/dialogue has nothing neccesarily to do with actual animation. Remember too that Flintstones was a rip on the Honeymooners. Bird will forever be a legend though if ONLY for Homer talking to his brain. The best actual writing for ANIMATION was when Homer counted to eight on his fingers. Classic, but still lit based more than visual.

ROYAL blue too, with the gold/brass screws, which says posh-o-rama and is exactly the kind of sign you might see on the door of a restaurant. Not only that but the rat is blue too, and there's a flow that leads your eye from the text at the top through the rat to the logo. It's well designed. Why so incensed, Scorcho? Also Godoffire, it's supposed to be a kiddie flick, is it? Incredibles was PG not G remember? If you're going to make assumptions, why wouldn't you guess the same here? You're even more over the top than Scorcho.

Wasn't this being directed by Jan Pinkava before he was replaced by Bird? Evidently, either the film was not working before they brought him in or Bird brought something else to the project - personally I loved the trailer and after the general middling reaction given to Cars, this ought to get Pixar back onto strong ground again.

Does anybody think it's weird that Cars is already out on dvd? I mean, I didn't hear a single thing: no tv ads, no print ads, nothing. Half the reason they moved the movie to the summer was so that they could sell it on dvd for christmas. Now it's out, and there's nothing. the movie wasn't that great, but I'm still kind of surprised how low-key the release was...

considering the movie grossed $244million stateside, $450million worldwide, and have pretty high reputation rankings on imdb and amazon... i don't watch tv, so i don't know if there actually weren't any ads for it, and i didn't see the movie because talking cars (and larry the freakin' cable guy) don't appeal to me... it should be important to point out that just because something doesn't twist our nipples here at AICN - especially in the TBs - doesn't mean it didn't do well, and that the majority of people won't like it. and vice versa *cough* snakes on a plane *cough*

Cars is a shoo in best animated film
by emeraldboy
Nov 7th, 2006
11:24:06 AM
Despite its weak story Cars is visually the best looking film Pixar has ever done. it is pixars artistic and visual triumph. There is stuff in there which will be framed and put in art gallery in the future. Take for example the car shaped mountains in the background, the scene where the sun goes down aginst the back drop of the car shaped mountains, as a european the Naascar thing went over my head completely but there was some wit in there. I thought the casting of Jeremy Clarkson was good stroke. I thought the whole to-mater joke was unappealing and left a bitter taste in my mouth. The the next challenge for pixar will to be to a 2d film which is on the horizon as we know. That films success or failure will make or break lassiter as the new of disney animation.

Even though the trailer was less intriguing than I'd hoped for a new Pixar film, I trust Brad Bird to give me something good. His track record is way above average, with "The Iron Giant" and "The Incredibles" both hitting it out of the park, so I'm hopeful for "Rataouille." We'll see.

If you're a designer or graphic designer, you woulda been using it big time in the early 90s. It's since become part of the standard typographic palette much like bank gothic. I'm not ragging on you, just sayin. _______________Quadrupletee, Did you scream blue murder that Disney kept making films like Dumbo, Bambi, Lady and the Tramp, Lion King, Jungle book etc. etc.? Nope! They all had, God forbid, talking animals. How many people here post I'm fucking SICK of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Foghorn Leghorn and so-on? NO-ONE! For the best part of a century NO-ONE cared. Like I posted above, it's about story story story (and slightly about animation not always doing redundant things like showcasing what a live-action film could do which is why I took Kuguy to task on the Simpsons and the same can be said of King of the Hill). Why have you 'had it'? Because the animals are now CG? Huh? I know I'm being over the top, but it annoys me that people post this every talkback without thinking their own argument through. Forgive me, but if you guys get to vent, so do I.

for Mr. Incredible? And Anchorite, give it a chance, man! You're going off based on the very first teaser? What "trailers"? There are more? If you were paying attention you'd know that mostly the teaser stuff doesn't even end up in the actual movie! I guess you don't like that Eddie Izzard style humour, but don't force your subjective bias down our throats as fact. Besides which after your "pull this one out of the sewer" line you forfeit any judgment on what constitutes good writing. Settle down, Beavis.

that font has been around since the 19th century. it's called copperplate gothic. every frakking 'serious' book or movie poster uses it to be, like, taken seriously. but the best use of it? on patrick bateman's business card. however, i'm more weirded out by the phonetic spelling underneath. aren't there other french words they coulda used that aren't so difficult for 3-year-olds (or 30-year-olds) to pronounce? The title, is actually very catchy! A "Ratatouille" is a gourmet vegetable casserole dripping in garlic and olive oil. It is usually served with some form of red meat or game. So, not only does the title refer to the idea that this is a story about a "RAT"-atouille, it's also a riff on gourmet dining - a national pastime in France, and a calling that the main character aspires to. And as far as it being unpronouncable by 3-year old and 30 year olds, the folks at Pixar realize that the good ole USA has one of the worst literacy rates among indusrialzed nations. That's why they spelled it out for you.

You pwned me with "just as good as the shit served up". I was only taking issue with you being so over the top because when you said the whole story sucks and the trailers are terrible it came off as awfully disingenuous considering you're talking about what, 2 minutes tops? And you posted 3 times. I think my comments were fair considering. No Joe Ranft is indeed an awful thing, but I didn't think he had any story input on Incredibles. As far as I know it was just voice input on that one - and yet he DID do a lot on Cars, so... As for not having confidence in their own product, look at Toy Story 2. They started all over again because they were so unhappy with the way things were going. That one turned out all right. Actually now I think of it MOST of their stuff has had a huge narrative stumbling block along the way. As for outsider naysaying, people dissed the crap out of Monsters, Nemo, Incredibles AND Cars. They turned out O.K. too, so have a little faith. I have no problem with differing opinions and will happily agree to disagree as you might have seen from my other posts over the years, I just really did think after those 3 posts that you were jumping the gun something awful and shrieking about it. Guess I was a bit full-on too. I was probably already angry at all those super flying fuckwits who say moronic unthinking shit like 'talking animal movies suck', Ignoring the best part of a century of really good animated movies and genius Warners shorts and basically shooting the messenger. It's not the CG, or the fact that it's animated. Which brings us neatly back to Pixar and story story story. If Ratatouille sucks it'll be because of the characterisation or plot not the bloody rendered fur. Just because the last few movies with animated animals in 'em sucked doesn't mean Bugs Bunny shorts, Dumbo, Droopy cartoons or Bambi suck. I must admit though I'd probably be happy to use any old excuse at hand to tear down Mickey Mouse. Little fucker makes a hypocrite of me. Mickey DOES suck. Sorry. I'll stop rabbiting on now. Ha!
