That's another movie. There's also a part in Van Helsing where it seems like Castlevania the movie. When they're at the Dracula ball or dance or whatever it is. That seems straight outta Castlevania. More than a movie though. I want Konami to release a Castlevania Collection for PS2 or whatever system. All the NES Castlevania's. Bloodlines for Sega Genesis. Symphony of the Night and Chronicles from PS1. Maybe the original gameboy versions. I doubt they'd add the GBA versions though.

making movies? Seriously, all the hate that Ratner got on this site should always, ALWAYS be directed towards PWSA. ALWAYS. At least Dr. Boll's movies are so bad that they are entertaining in a campy kind of way. PWSA actually makes an effort and believes that he is doing something cool or innovative, which is actially kind of funny ina tragic way I guess. I completely agree, Gargolito. How else do you explain the success of Ashton Kutcher? This Paul Anderson is clearly not a talented artist, but he must have something to offer the studios or he wouldn't keep getting jobs. It seems like he works well with restricted budgets, is probably receptive to studio input, and generally turns out a 'product' that gives them a decent return on their investment. Sometimes people scratch their heads and wonder why video game movies suck so consistantly, but i think the key goes beyond mere weak plots or shit acting. The way I see it, Most video games are heavily inspired by films, eg: tomb raider is indy with tits, resident evil is a mish-mash of romereo's films and so forth. So when these games then become movies.....well, is it any wonder they seem a bit stale? OR stupid? I remember reading a while back that someone (prblu U.Knowho) was thinking about making a Duke Nukem film. Why the fuck wud you make a film of a game that is basically a parody on big budget action flicks by Arnie et al? Even the laziest Hollywood hack could see that they are crossing old ground with that one. And so now we come to Castlevania - a game with obvious links to the many dracula films over the decades. By turning it into a film you are essentialy making another Dracula movie- only its gonna be one with a weak plot, 2nd rate actors and a continual fuck up at the helm. Basically, until video games come more unique and stop being based on movies, then there is really no need to make films based on games. Other then to make buttloads of quick money by milking a brand name, that is..... Ah, Damn you Michael Bay

I Want To Be Hopeful
by Dersu

I suppose I can live with, to a point, Anderson's messing up the "Mortal Kombat" and "Resident Evil" franchises. I can even live with the fact that he ruined any chance of a decent “Alien” and “Predator” franchise team-up (although that may not have been his fault, seeing as “AVP” was for Fox). The reason I can live with these unfortunate cinematic mishaps is because “Mortal Kombat” and “Resident Evil” (or “Biohazard”) aren’t as near and dear to me as certain other video game franchises. Both “Alien” and “Predator” have had their good movies (“Alien” had two great movies), so I can live “Alien vs. Predator” not being up to snuff (to put it mildly). “Castlevania,” or “Akumajou Dracula” to use its correct title, is in fact very near and dear to me and I’ve wanted to see a great movie based on it for decades now. It’s a very big part of my childhood. It’s a “best buds for life” kind of game series to me. I’ve wanted to see Anderson kicked out of the movie business for some time now, but if he fucks this up, I’ll want to see his ass wearing a barrel from the point he lays this egg and onward (figuratively speaking). It has been pointed out a fair number of times how sadly ironic it is that a “Halo” movie with Peter Jackson’s support as well as the direction of an extremely talented newcomer was cancelled while both Anderson’s and Boll’s latest cinematic skeet shoots get green lighted. I read the words “Dracula Begins” with my teeth gritted. I hope that’s a term he only used to sell the project to studios. I want to like this movie. Actually, I want to love this movie. Sometimes talent can be found in surprising places. After all, Akiva Goldsman wrote “A Beautiful Mind” after he wrote “Batman & Robin,” so sometimes the people we write off as “hacks” can actually show us that they have the chops to give us something good. Anderson has yet to do this. I hope he realizes how bad his previous movies are and understands that this isn’t something that he can thoughtlessly bang out and feed to prepubescent-minded intellectual failures with no standards, attention spans, or a reason to exist. “Castlevania” is something of a video game legacy. A movie based on it should be treated with the kind respect someone like Peter Jackson treated “The Lord of the Rings” or “King Kong” with. Unfortunately, video games are still not really considered art in the mainstream, and as such, only z-grade movies usually get made from them (although I liked “Silent Hill,” which did at least try). Anderson needs to take this very, very seriously. If this turns out bad, then he’s basically pissed away any chance I’ll have to see the “Castlevania” movie I’ve wanted to see since the ‘80s. I suppose I’m taking this way too seriously, but Simon Belmont and the gang really are a part of some of my fonder video gaming memories. I can understand how some would view Anderson’s “Mortal Kombat” and “Resident Evil” as fun popcorn movies. But this shouldn’t be some mildly entertaining, yet forgettable, thrill ride at best. This is “Akumajou Dracula,” Paul. Show some respect.

RIDLEY SCOTT. Also, David Fincher made some music videos that I really dig, way before I ever learned that he was the one that did them. He always had a really cinematic, beautiful style, even for crappy songs/bands. Check out Aerosmith's "Janie's Got a Gun", Madonna's "Vogue", the Stones' "Love is Strong", or Madonna's "Express Yourself". There's an underlying style going on there, which is really cool considering I couldn't give a damn about any of those songs. Oh, and Ridley Scott is the greatest filmmaker of the past three decades.

Cringed at it? I almost clawed my fucking eyes out. "Prexy"? What the fuck? There is only one man I trust to butcher the english language, and that's Sacha Baron Cohen. Variety's impossibly cretinous attempts at "hip" are a fucking linguistic disease. Normally I wouldn't give two shits about that rag, but their retarded terminology is a cancer upon culture. Someone should destroy it, utterly, for the sake of humanity and intelligence. Oh, and personally, Blade 2 was very very good, and it's pretty recent, so it's not like there haven't been ANY good vampire movies lately.

I agree with everything you said, except the first thing - it's not just a sidescroller from the 80s, it's a franchise that's been going on for about 20 years, with precious few bad games in the bunch. They even stopped being sidescrollers some time ago. You should really try "Symphony of the Night", the 1997 PSX Castlevania. It's one of the better games of all time.
Sucks to Castlevania...
by Howard the Duck
Nov 3rd, 2006
08:17:49 AM
...because it will indeed suck! AVP was the second-worst movie ever made(the first being Batman and Robin) It was a less than adequate Alien movie, and a complete piece of crap Predator movie rolled into one. Predators acting out of character like they did...bullshit. "In the same vein as Underworld and Blade 2"? Underworld is good for one thing, and that's Kate Beckinsale in that outfit. All three of the Blade moves blew. So, I truly hope that this so-called Castlevania movie will be something true to the games and as non-derivative as it possibly can be.

I'm going write down a bunch of videogame and sci-fi franchises of pieces of paper, put them in a hat, let PWSA pull random choices from, and then have him crap on them. Or maybe he can just poop right in the hat and we will have some mega mix "VS" movie. I mean seriously... I think his biggest injustice was making a mediocre Alien spin-off so now Ridley Scott sees the Alien franchise as being out of his hands and into the studios' so he won't do his next Alien movie. RE did a very good job of sticking to the themes of the game, but stylisticly missed the mark by a long long shot. Personally, I didn't play the Castlevania games very much and don't have any sentimental attatchment to the series. But I'm sure the movie will be terrible. Too bad for you fans, because I know it is a quality and cared for series of games. I hope to work in the industry some day and I think it would be great fun to do some franchise project (game/comic adaptation, remake, etc), but I couldn't imagine wanting to do something like that for nearly every project. Seems like an obvious giveaway that you KNOW that you aren't a very good story teller, KNOW you're severly lacking in creativity, and KNOW that the only way people will come see your work is if based on the name recognition of the franchise and not name recognition of yourself as a director.
I just can't hate on Paul WS too much
by Movietool
Nov 3rd, 2006
08:31:01 AM
I've said this before, but I think it bears repeating given the amount of vitrol that get sent his way . . . Let's compare two sci-fi/horror writer/directors that are on opposite ends of the respect spectrum as far as geeks are concerned. Paul WS and John Carpenter. If you compare resumés, it's no contest, Carpenter wins hands down. But if you compare their movies made in the same time period (1995 to now), I gotta tell you, Paul WS wins in a landslide. I'll take Mortal Kombat, Event Horizon, Soldier, or Resident Evil over ANYTHING Carpenter has made in that time period. Ultimately, what I'm saying is that I've enjoyed some of this guys movies, and others I've disliked, but I don't see that the red-hot hatred for the guy is warrented over any other director that's made his share of crap movies along with good ones.
Carpenter Vs Anderson
by Franklin T Marmoset
Nov 3rd, 2006

I think the anger stems from Anderson being in a position to make the types of films many of us film nerd types would love to see, but then doing so with the utmost mediocrity. Every one of his films is like a delicious souffle with the air let out. Also, you may be right about the timeframe, Mr Movietool, but given the choice between Anderson's complete output and Carpenter's post 1995 output, I'd pick the Carpenter stinkers every time. Do you know why? Out of respect.
It's just funny at this point.

'Dracula Begins??' If anderson's doing it might as well call it 'Dracula Forever' or 'Dracula and Robin'.... Underworld sucks! As for Blade, blade was good... but im trying to figure out how you connect blade (a modernized retro spin on dracula with high tech gadgets) with a fucking 15th century Dracula story??? Why cant these people actually stay true to the time period and make it serious rather than campy shit like the brothers grimm or Sleepy hollow... why cant they make a time period film serious for once?? PAUL ANDERSON RAPED MY CHILDHOOD!!!
by REDFIELD8
Nov 3rd, 2006
09:36:54 AM
Here in Spain I was a kiddo when the first Mortal Kombat came out, and my hype was ridiculously high for the shitfest that took place in front of me. However, the big crime came a few years ago, when I heard that there was going to be a film of my fav game and absolutely BEST VIDEOGAME SERIES of all time next to Zelda: RESIDENT EVIL was going to have a live-action movie!!! I eagerly awaited the film where David Boreanaz played Chris Refield, Claire Forlani put her sexy body to work in the role of Jill Valentine (though I admit that Sienna Gillroy was hot as hell y RE: Apocalypse) and James Woods made a badass Albert Wesker. This dream movie had George Romero helming the project and the possibility of becoming an immensely profitable franchise. In return, a got another slap in the face, this time coming from that naked russian chick in a red dress (I heard Anderson stooped her for a while) and that tomboy that appeared in Lost last season. My only relief came with the RE:Make for the Gamecube: those graphics made the game much more intense and, in a certain way, it has become the perfect blend of the game's plot and live (CG) action. Too bad RE was fucked up by this hack. Damn you, Michael B... I mean, DAMN YOU PAUL DABELYOOES ANDERSON!!!!

and not one of the sweetest character in gaming history...Alucard. If he touches the sacred ground that is Alucard it would be like someone making a Mario Bros. movie with Dennis Hopper as Bowser...I hate hollywood.
Milla Jovovich will play Simon Belmont

I mean, why not? look at the art from Konami... very feminine-looking men... either that, or Milla will be the security agent for dracula's castle, and will lead Simon Belmont to Drac to kill him, only she'll end up killing him with king-fu wirework. Dracula will bite her as he's dying, and in Castlvania 2, she'll become a human-vampire hybrid... I gotta go vomit now.

By the gods. I even liked Event Horizon, but after AvP, I believe the words of Alexander Pope best express your intentions toward the art of film, which are identical to that of Mr. Boll ... "Th' Adventrous Baron the bright Locks admir'd, / He saw, he wish'd, and to the Prize aspir'd: / Resolv'd to win, he meditates the way, / By Force to ravish, or by Fraud betray; / For when Success a Lover's Toil attends, / Few ask, if Fraud or Force attain'd his Ends."

why they still haven't released a trailer for DOA yet. They must have realized from the begining it was a cosmic abortion ready to happen. But really, could be worse then if Eww Boll made it?

They should get whoever made What Dreams May Come to do the Castlevania movie, because a lot of it reminded me of Castlevania (especially SotN). Upside down cathedral, gigantic fucking library, walking on heads and skulls...

So you have Trevor Belmont, Grant DaNasty (the badass gravity-defying pirate and sidekick), Sypha Belnades (Mysterious magician and Trevor's love interest), and Alucard (Dracula's son). Definitely the best game to turn into a movie. There's quite an extensive backstory with how the Belmonts were outcasts for their mysterious powers, political strife in Romania, etc. Add that to the origin story from Castlevania: Lament of Innocence and add some of the game's incredible music and you have a winner.
Mortal Kombat was a pretty damn cool movie...

for its time anyway I really liked the whole music video aspect of it, and that techno soundtrack was damn cool. Event horizon wasn't bad either..it was a pretty darn creepy sci fi movie, and when you think about it, it came during a time when there was a void in that specific genre...you have to admit, he didn't have it was pretty original...

rbatty024--the restoral of faith is mutual, my friend. A toast to "Rape"! Wait, damnit, no, that came out wrong. A toast to Alexander Pope, rather. Or Pope Alexander, as the kids call him these days (personally, I would have gone with A. Piddy).

Brotherhood of the Wolf ruled and this could have been like that expect with vamps. I predict Anderson will update this to modern times with so he can infuse his sci-fi gadgets and shit (Hence the Blade and Underworld references). It'll be the great, great, great, great grand daughter of Simon Belmont. Oh yeah, don't forget her team of soldier pals, because every Paul WS movie has a fucking team. If you're (un)lucky he'll throw in Alucard for throwaway game cred as her main squeeze (but they won't REALLY hook up...because she's too "badass" to fall in love.) Dracula will be some rich corporate dude who will own some high tech castle retreat with lasers and a hologram CPU. He'll sneak in Prodigy's song "Climbatize" during the end credits. The End.
AvP is NOT the horrible movie you wish it to be...

I'm not exactly defending it, but it's not that bad. Really. Anderson is working because he makes movies that MAKE MONEY. Which translates he makes movie that people pay to see. Which translates to, nerds probably need to make better use of their time than pointless hating of multimillionaire directors.

You know it, I know it... the whole fuckin universe knows it. Sure it entertained those who have recently had labotomies and are drooling goo out of all orifices but to people who actually respect the source it sucked balls. But in the end I'm glad it was made, as I was glad Freddy vs. Jason was made. More vs. movies should be made. Like superman vs. batman, and Iron man vs. Captain America, and hulk vs thing, and dog vs. cat, and dick vs. vajjjin,

I just don't see why they give the guy so much shit here. Yet you worship Bryan Singer after the crap he pulled with the disappointing Superman Returns, talk about double standards. All of this nonsense just tarnishes this site's credibility.

Not as bad as, say Predator II, but cloned and slightly improved using the same retarded fetus. Actually, I take that back. Predator II only screwed Predator. AvP took out the Alien frnchise as well. I say Anderson boxes Uwe Boll in a death match. Either way, we all win.

An adaptation of Halo gets put on hold. Meanwhile, Castlevania as brought to you by PWS is greenlit. The possibilities, a Halo movie being produced by Peter Jackson, with a promising director at the helm. A more than capable special-fx studio in Weta, the blessing of Bungie, etc. I remember reading somewhere that the scene in "Kong" with the overgrown larvae were a sign of things to come in Halo: The Flood. I would have loved to see what Weta would have done with a sci-fi setting. They've already done fantasy (LORT),they've done early 20th century (Kong)... Damn, the possibilities. But like someone else said, he's a competent enough director who'll make a decent movie without a huge budget. It just seems that many times, he seems to "almost" get there in terms to making a very good movie. Mortal Kombat was ok, it was probably really exciting back in the day because of the possibilities CGI brought to the table. Event Horizon was another decent film, but as you can see, there's a pattern here. They're all just decent...
Damn, I should use god-damn spell checker...

I meant to say LOTR. And about the Larvae, that The Flood fx would have been similar to that giant insect scene in Kong. Not that the movie was gonna be called Halo:The Flood... And the point rbatty024 brought up, it's no secret videogames are eating into movie ticket sales. With the price of movie tickets these days, and games lately bringing you a comparable entertainment experience , it's funny to think Hollywood is sabotaging video game adaptations!...

Hmmm, I liked Event Horizon. I thought Soldier and RE 1 were okay. But Castlevania? I really like playing it, but a movie about it? Why? A Castlevania by PWSA is not so much an affront to film; as it is, an incredibly messy corn and spinach-infested loose stool DUMP on all the great gaming Castlevania has given me.

Haha. Just like SanityKaos I misread it at first and though it said Paul Thomas Anderson. Now THAT would have made for an interesting movie I can tell you! ;) No but really, Mortal Kombat was an excellent B-movie. Event Horizont was a cool sci-fi flick when I was very young. AVP just plain sucked. It's pretty obvious that Castlevania will turn out somewhere in between that and that's just not right. I seem to recall Akira Yamaoka worked with the guy that did the soundtrack when they made the Silent Hill movie, so unless they can get Michiru Yamane (who composed for many of Konami's games, including CV), they should just can the movie right now.
