OK, 'too soon', is officially old. But seriously... if 'Street Fighter' had to be Raoul Julia's last movie, the least they could do is NOT remake it. Or maybe they should cast Benicio Del Toro as Bison and have him mimic Julia's mannerisms? Yes!

Street Fighter the Movie was one of the first disappointments of my life, now they shall set it right. Oh, and I hope they call it Street Fighter 2, even if it's not a sequel. And if they make a sequel let it be Street Fighter 2 Turbo. And let's have Akuma. And no pussying out of special moves. And Ryu better be bad-ass. And... actually I could go on all day.

Cause I'll do it for free. Hell, I'll pay to do it. In blood. It'll cut costs because I've already imagined the whole thing, in glorious detail, down to the extras on the DVD. So And even if I have any experience whatsoever, it can't be worse than the first one.

What's with casting Ziyi (or Lucy Liu) for every fucking asian female role? The last thing I want to see is a skinny young teen Chun Li... she has always been solid, mature figure. If anything, Ziyi is more Makoto. If Kelly Hu packs on a couple more pounds, she'll be a solid Chun Li. /// Donnie Yen = Ryu :) Duh! /// Cena = Guile?
"never had a good story"...
by kuguy3000
Oct 30th, 2006
02:30:30 AM
Actually Quint, and anyone else who shares that sentiment... anyone with a clue to what Street Fighter was actually about would know how absolutely absurb that statement was.

Street Fighter originally had one of the finest storylines any game has ever had...no hyperbole. When people think of the game's story they're primarily focusing on the first two titles, of which formed a Terminator-like duality that never realy needed a third chapter (but nevertheless did for $$$).

What made Street Fighter so damn compelling wasn't that it focused on any one particular character but instead let a player identify with one of basic acheotypical ones. The series eventually narrowed more to the Ryu-Ken saga and while this was acceptable, it came at a cost: lack of defined newer characters and stories. However, for those who remember just how damn GOOD Street Fighter II actually was...

The story of Ryu and Ken, childhood friends, training partners whose fates would forever be entwined. The Ryu-Ken personaly differences became standard for nearly every game (regardless of genre) since, and have kept up well. Ryu's stoic poise, Ken's superfluous kidding made them the perfect yin-yang and absolute ambassadors of video game pathos. Campbell would have been proud.

There were the dramatic secondardly storylines, some of which are just as beloved as the standard Ryu-Ken sagas. Guile's revenge-hate for M. Bison for the death of his best friend Charlie, Sagat's rage at Ryu for scarring his chest (and title usurption), Chun Li's obsession for the death of her father, Dhalsim's longing for an end to the suffering of the children of India, Zangief's inability to reconcile the death of the USSR...

The modern entries have forgotten the heroic legacy of the series, but for a good synopsis just watch the first animated movie, which was done with respect for the characters and (for the most part) story. Robots aside, the characterization of Ryu and Ken was done perfectly and with respect.

Also, anyone remember just how bad-ass Vega was? Remembering learning the spinning pile-driver, or getting zapped with Blanka... damn...I MISS the old days. Back when gaming had such potential and achieved so much goodwill, only to have it blown and prostituted. Street Fighter was a monumental moment in the history of not only video games, but electronic entertainment...

!!FUN TRIVIA!! The Street Fighter series is most notable for having given the lackluster performing Super Nintendo the extra boost it needed to overtake rival Sega Genesis. Street Fighter titles were considered ideal system-launch games, and shipped with the original PlayStation, Sega Dreamcast, and PlayStation 2. A SF derivative, Capcom vs SNK 2 was the first online fighting game for the original XBOX, and a reworking of Street Fighter 2 Turbo is the best-selling XB360 Live Arcade title yet.

Sorry for the long-winded post just above...but the truth is that perhaps the Street Fighter series doesn't belong in the movie arena. What seems perfectly natural in the video game universe doesn't always translate to other media, whatever that media is. We'll have to see...
Why Chun Li?!
by Bruce Leroy
Oct 30th, 2006
02:32:50 AM
Jeeez…and STILL they don’t get it. Why focus on Chun Li? Ryu is the focal point of the whole game. If there is a lead character in the game, it’s him. Focus the story on Ken and Ryu. Start at the beginning of the story, Street Fighter Alpha. Yeah, sure SF is about action but I hope they don’t forget to focus on the story instead of casting big name actors and cool special effects. Let the director (No, NOT Paul W.S. Anderson!) play these games till kingdom come, until he/she gets an idea what these games are about. You could build a great story out of the minimal plot of the videogames. They finally have a chance to undo that piece of dreck SF movie from ’94. Don’t blow it on this one.

The Rock would actually make an interesting M. Bison. Fuck the haters and cast Zhang ZiYi as Chun-Li Zhang! She's cute as hell and she kicks ass. Make that diamond-faced villian from "Die Another Day" Ryu. Keira Knightley as Cammy (too much?). I don't know. I just hope it's a good movie.

Realistic casting #1

CHUN-LI:
As much as I love Ziyi, I gotta go with Kelly Hu on this one. But whoever gets the part needs to gain a little weight because Chun-li had it goin on below the belt.

Ryu:
Donnie Yen is a pretty good choice.

E.Honda:
For mer sumo champ, Akebono

M.Bison (Vega):
Clancy Brown

Cammy:
Emilie de Ravin

Balrog (M.Bison):
The guy the character was based off of, Mike Tyson.

Blanka and Dhalsim:
In a perfect world, they'd both be mo-cpped cg characters, with Andy Serkis doing a apelike Blanka, and Doug Jones doing Dhalsim. But theres NO WAY they got the budget for sumthin like that, so no names and a reliance of some good makeup effects would have to do. I'd give Blanka have a brief cameo, almost like Scorpion in Mortal Kombat, and Dhalsim would be some trippy spiritual guide.

T.Hawk, Fei Long, DeeJay:
Bad characters, or in T.Hawk's case uncastable role. Why bother?

Ken, Guile, Vega (Balrog), Zangief, and Sagat:
Still thinkin'. And even though he'd be too expensive, The Rock would make a great Guile considering he kinda looks like the character, and the fact that, that hairdo WILL NOT WORK ONSCREEN.

I cannot express to you the immense dissapointment my 13 year old friends and I felt leaving the cinema after that horrid film - not one dragon punch, hadouken, or sonic boom thrown..........no spinning bird kicks, no sumo torpedos - just a lame ass jack knife................thank God for the Street Fighter animated movie - near perfect for what we wanted from the live action film........bonus Chun-Li titties and all!.................by the way, whothefuckcares - kuguy3000 actually has the story points dead on - thats the same story elements I remember reading in countless game magazines when the game came out - and the same that were in the animated film years later - no where in his post does he suggest that the game was any great acheivement in video game narrative - but that shit WAS in the game ending themselves - EVERYONE in my peer group from that era knows those story lines, so leave the bloke alone - straight face - check

Almost all the characters did their signature moves in the Van Damn movie... it was just so badly done you might have missed it... Moves guaranteed in it: Honda's 100 hand slap, Guile's flash kick & Sonic Boom, Ryu's hadouken, Ken's dragon punch & hurricane kick, cammy's thrust kick, etc... But rather than trying CG or wirework, they just had the moves done "realistically" -ie an uppercut from a slight bending position is a dragon punch. One frame of white is a hadouken, and Guile whipping his arms together, flexing his "tattoo" is a sonic boom. I wish I were kidding, but sadly I'm not.

then a sonic boom, hadouken and dragon punch they were not..............I know what you mean - we all saw it, and we all thought it was such a cop out..........such a shame, and probably why we all embraced the Mortal Kombat film at the time - still a terrible film, and a massive fall short of the game's fatalities etc, but atleast it gave us a massive step closer to what we wanted............I'm sure there were some geniuses working on that Street Fighter movie who figured they knew better than us kids, and that they'd give us something more realistic, thinking it'd be great and we'd eat it up - there were so many potentially great 'movies' that were obviously ruined by that logic - Mario Bros, Masters of the Universe, Doom, Transformers - oh shit, wait, that one isnt out yet - but you can tell its following the same path

My only experience with this Streetfighter phenomenon was the Streetfighter Pinball they used to have in my local pub. It was a pretty good table, it had a bit where you had to bash up a car, and I even got to learn some of the characters' names - Ken, etc. One time, I got four replays, which was pretty exciting. They should make a film about that.

Multiple story lines intertwinning... damn, you just might be onto something great, kudos_eb. ___ Realy can't think of anyone who fits Chun Li but hope they don't cast skiny- anorexic Hollywood clones, alla DOA flic ('cept for Jaime Pressly, *damn* she freakin bulk up)! ___ For action, Kung Fu Hustle level would fit perfectly.

but at least it's not focused on Guile. Here's my cast list: Ryu: Mark Decascos [not japanese, but he would look realistic in a white gi wondering everywhere fighting people] or if he spoke english: Tony Jaa Ken: Alec Newman [played as Paul Atredies in the scifi channel "Dune" mini-series] Chun Li: Kelly Hu [yeah I love Zhang Ziyi also, but seeing as she doesn't speak much english I'd have to give it to her] Maybe also Shu Qi, she was in the Transporter. Guile: Dolph Lundgren, at least when he was younger [he should have had the role LAST time] so I'll go with Daniel Bernhardt Vega: the guy from the first movie wasn't all bad actually, he had no lines really and was mostly all look. The only decent actor in the while movie and he really didn't even do anything. M.Bison: Don Frye from Godzilla: Final Wars, he has that big ham face that Bison has and has some UFC background. Not that great an actor tho. But a decent option I suppose. Balrog: Bob Sapp [look him up, seriously] Sagat: hmmm maybe an actual unknown up and coming thai boxer. Hard to come up with. Blanka: oh yeah...CG Dhalsim: I wanna say Bill Nighy for some reason. I see his face when I think of it. Cammy: Natassia Malthe Fei Long: Donnie Yen Honda: got me on this one. Maybe an actual Sumo wrestler. T.Hawk: does this guy REALLY need to be in the movie? noone played as him anyways, why put him in the movie?
A City Hunter kind of SF II movie would be awesome
by Toby___Wong
Oct 30th, 2006
11:20:22 AM
Jackie Chan's City Hunter had better SFII action sequences than JCVD's SF. Stephen Chow could also do a good job as the director. My casting would be the following: Ryu: Donnie Yen Ken: Gary Daniels Chun Li: Zhang Ziyi Guile : John Cena E. CHUN LI was one of the first video game characters to ever give me a chubby.. its true. Among others were Sonya from Mortal Kombat, lara croft obviously, Samus from metroid, zelda, and peach from mario brothers. They should make a mortal kombat vs. Street fighter movie and have sonya and chun li do some lesbian scene where they neck and jiggle their boobies. that would be hot

Some of those actors are inspired choices; however, Tony Jaa as Sagat does not make sense. Tony has neither the ethnicity nor the height to play Sagat. And this is off on a limb, but Owen Wilson could play a decent Ken.. even though I hate the idea of casing Owen in yet *another* movie.

Hilarious quotes concerning the original film:
by Daddylonghead
Oct 30th, 2006
12:01:53 PM
"We're taking our property to the next level," explains Capcom's Aida, the licensing executive behind the Street Fighter movie project. "When you play the game, you cannot relate to a character as anything other than a computer-graphic warrior. When you watch Jean-Claude as Guile, West Studi as Sagat, or Raul Julia as Bison, you walk out of the theater with a completely different feeling."

TO SAY THE LEAST!

HA HA, LET'S HEAR FROM STEVEN DE SOUZA, THE WASHED-UP COKE-TARD WHO WROTE 'N' DIRECTED THIS MISCARRIAGE:

"With Super Mario Bros. the directors got fixated on literally carrying the game over to the movie... We could do something like that. If we were idiots, we could start out with the camera on the arcade game and then Guile jumps right out of the machine and yells, 'Hi kids!' And then we could all go right to the unemployment line. "

"Street Fighter is a cross between Star Wars, a James Bond movie, and a war movie... It takes place in Shadowloo where there's a civil war similar to what's happening in Bosnia... there won't be any fantastic moves - no teleporting or fireballs. But there will be a hint that this might happen in a future picture. We're going to have enormous battle scenes - we're renting the entire army of Thailand."

"At the end of the picture when we have an all-out battle for Bison's hidden temple in the jungles of Shadowloo, it's going to blow people's minds. It's going to be like D-Day."

"The only way the movie could disappoint a kid is if the kid were to say, 'I really wanted to see character A fight character B, and that didn't happen.'"

Finally: " The characters from the game will appear in appropiate situations. What if you pick up the comic book and Chun Li's really Ryu's sister. And then you see the movie, and maybe they get married and have a baby. My concern is consistency."

THANKS FOR YOUR CONCERN, SHITHEAD...

Bob Hoskins was a great choice for Mario, but I think it would have been even better if they went further with the "Latinos/Chicanos as Italians" and cast Cheech Marin as Mario along side Leguizamo as Luigi. Marin has but to regrow his mustache, and I know he'd appreciate a film where you get super powers from Mushrooms.

1. You guys keeps being surprised that Chun-Li is going to be the main character. You see todays Hollycrud and alike need to paint a pictures of strong female types with men being stupid and useless. Thank Spice "friggin" Girls and (God I hate you square faced monstrosity) Lara "I'd rather do a man" Croft. And thank PC.. It's OK to portray women as strong and clever but not men, we are too useless. 2. Yeah what the hell? Zhang Ziyi again? Is she gonna play my mom in a film of my life? I'm not into domestic violence but I'd make an exception there. Fecks sake! There are tons and tons of more gorgeous Chinese actresses that can actually speak better English in HK and China. Ignorance of casting again. I vote for Zhang Ziyi to be put down next time she has the flu. 3. What writers have forgotten these days is that simple is good. I just want mind blowing fights. 4. I don't care for big names for casting... So the best thing they could do is get either Stephen Chow, Donnie Yen or the Ong Bak people to write and direct it.

by GeekBob
Oct 30th, 2006
02:02:24 PM
For everyone who's been posting the City Hunter clips... Did you know that Wong Jing, the director of that, actually DID go and make a whole (unlicensed) "Street Fighter" movie after that? It was called "Future Cops," and was basically a knockoff of "Timecop" but with SFII characters instead of Van Damme, and they end up fighting "under-cover" in a Chinese high school: Guile, Vega and Dhalsim help a nerdy kid; Ken, Bison, Honda and Sagat help the bullies. There's also a musical scene where Guile sings a love ballad to high school girls, and Vega takes a girl on a "date" into Sid & Marty Kroft version of Super Mario World. Eventually various "human" characters start morphing into SF fighters, too, while the nerdy kid turns into Goku from DBZ. Most of the moves, even the "magic" ones, from the games get used, along with the music. It's INSANE. Check it out: http://tinyurl.com/ynfs85

Couldn't be any worse than the Van Damme version. Here's your cast for some key roles: Bison - Jean Claude Van Damme. Yeah, I said it. Ryu - Tak Sakaguchi (from VERSUS). Chun Li - certainly not Zhang Ziyi, she's all wrong for it. Cast Shannon Yao from Lau Kar-leung's recent DRUNKEN MONKEY. Ken - Jeff Wolfe from ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA AND AMERICA. Fei Long - Stephen Chow, no question about it. Guile - Vin Diesel. Balrog - Mike Tyson if you can afford him, the black dude from the oft-overlooked US SEALS II if you can't. In fact, there's no reason everyone from US SEALS II shouldn't have a place in this.

...I think a good film of this could still conceivably be made. I mean, the plot isn't much different from the Karate Kid or the Rocky films... and I like the decision to focus on Chun Li. The film could probably benefit from locking down more squarely on the depiction of a single character... give the other characters cameos if you must, but there's no need to squeeze all the ca-jillion street fighter characters into the plot... then you end up with a stagnant, unfocused "epic" a la the first movie. Make it a compelling movie about a fight tournament, and bring in characters only as necessary to tell Chun Li's story. Also, make sure Vega's in it. That's all.

Hey everyone. Glad that some liked what I wrote, but it wasn't anything special (or grammatically correct). Just a long-time fan of the series here, and needed a chance to vent some steam. Unfortunately, this project will most likely suck, but we can hope for the best.

In fact, I suggest lowering your level of enthusiasm to that of a new Jaws movie (not like that movie had any story...) and you'll be set. Of course I'm kidding, because sarcasm doesn't translate well to internet talkbacks, and I don't want my account hacked by angry pro-shark nerds. So one more word about my beloved Street Fighter....

The arcades were indeedy a dying thing back in 1990, with more expensive machines taking the place of the standard-game units. A collapse of the arcade industry (heralded by the death of full-fledged Chuck E. Cheese restaurants) had begun and with no end in sight, it seemed like Black Tuesday for quarter-pluggin' lovers such as myself. But then, things changed...

It really can't be overstated just how influential and historically important this series was not just to the arcade scene (which it temporarily revived) but to the psyche of the game industry itself. Street Fighter will forever be remembered as both a gameplay and psychlogical evolution of the the potential of the possible. Movie fans will roar with glee over flicks like "It's a Wonderful Life" or "Lawrence of Arabia"...well damn, gamers have their Super Marios and their Zeldas...but for every Mona Lisa we also have our Andy Warhols...pop art taken to the next level.

Street Fighter was a revolution in gaming...combing tried-true points gathering, heavy story-laden plot, and something new...infinite gameplay. The new controller (based off the original design) completely revolutionized gameplay with button combinations and signiture movements...ALL of which are still standard in fighting games to this day. When terms such as 'fireball' and 'dragon punch' were defined, and the rules of game schematics were laid out.

It's sad when you consider the wasted possibilities of the modern gaming environment. With Microsoft screwing over gamers with microtransactions (bad bad) and Sony raping us with prices beyond belief, all the while game developers have nearly stopped innovating, it's like gaming has become Amish...we just hit a certain time and stopped evolving.

The recent Street Fighter games are a testament to this butchery. Gone are the pathos, gone are the characterizations, gone is the drama and depth, and gone are most of the reasons people identified with this series in the first place.

Quint, with all due respect and honors, please for the love of Christ don't you EVER say something so maddeningly stupid and ridiculous that this series never had a compelling story. It once possessed layers of depth (and gameplay) so thick no company has ever really figured it out... The best they can hope for is to continue re-releasing the games (two came out this year) forever...sad.

So with rant over, I'll leave witha bit of trivia for all the kiddies who need to be 'to cool for school'. This isn't hyperbole or wiki-nonsense shit.

*** TRIVIA!! *** The collected Street Fighter 2 arcade series (SF2, SF2 Champion Ed., SF2 Turbo, SF2 Super, SF2 Super Turbo) is considered the THIRD most widely distributed and played arcade game of all-time... third only to Pac-Man and Donkey Kong. Some reports place Defender in the top three, but this has not been verified.

*** TRIVIA!!! *** The Street Fighter series (all games, media, etc) has grossed over 1 BILLION dollars worldwide.

*** TRIVIA!!! *** The Street Fighter series (with emphasis on Chun Li and Cammy) is considered among the most robust toyline in Japanese history. The toyline has grossed more than Gundam, Macross, and Dragon Ball Z combined. Rumor has it second only to Pokemon sales (the undisputed leader of toy sales).

While piss-poor in most respect, the live-action Street Fighter movie represented some of the series' finest booty with super hot Ming Na as leg-o-licious Chun Li and smoking-hell-hot Kylie Minogue as Cammy. DAMN RIGHT can't get you outta my head!

It's pretty damn famous, but it'll be hilarious to anyone who ever seen it: http://tinyurl.com/wvy79 Here's an excerpt: "In lieu of dedicating a thousand more articles to Van Damme's speech issues, I will briefly present to you a before and after translation of many of Street Fighter's most important dialogue. It's presented in what I like to call "VAN DAMMAGE FONT," so say it outloud to yourself for you won't get the same effect. When the words get in all caps say them really loud, and when the words run together read them really quickly. Normal human being: "I know that you like to look at yourself on television, you sick son of a bitch." VAN DAMMAGE FONT: "Ah know that you liek to lookaht CHORseff on teleFISHonyou sick SONFABEESH." Normal, sane human being: "I'm going to kick that son of a bitch Bison's ass so hard, that the next Bison wannabe is gonna feel it!" VAN DAMMAGE FONT: "Eyem going to kick (pause) that SONFABEESH Bison's ass SO HORD (long pause) that the next Bison WHANNABE (even longer pause) isgonnafeelit." Normal, sane human being not doing a split on two chairs: "Game over!" Raul Julia: "GAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaAAAME.... OOOOOOVAAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGHHHHHH " So Van Damme makes Baby Jesus cry, at least Raul Julia (or as I affectionately call him, "Cancer Boy") made the movie somewhat watchable. You could tell that he KNEW deep down that this was the WORST role he could ever POSSIBLY get, so he made the best of it. And, to his credit, he made a pretty damned memorable performance considering that he was deathly ill and carrying a glorified coked-out ballet dancer on screen."

Master of the flying Guillitine. You want Dhalsim, Chun-Li, Ryu, Blanka, E-honda, Zangief, Sagat, and Kung Lao from Mortal Kombat 20 years BEFORE they made the game? You got it! Also, LOTSA things, like the music, we re-used in Kill BIll. Oh, and in the movie, Dhalsim throws fire, AND owls! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =RmdP1qTjGZY

I'm all for "Street Fighter" trying to redeem itself, but it is about 12 years too late! There are far better games that yearn for the silver screen treatment. This is no longer the era for "Street Fighter"...
