...you and I are in complete agreement about the horror genre in general and the treatment of Freddy Kruger (in all media) specifically. Bugs Bunny is dead on for what he's become. Like Hannibal from that series of movies, he's become an anti-hero who really only seems to kill those who somehow deserve it and generally does so in ways that are WAY to aware of the audience (mugging for the camera, even). It takes the menace right out of a character and renders the horror impotent. Too bad the folks working this iteration of the Elm Street Slasher haven't learned fromt he past.

...you forgot to mention that besides the cool stories (the Spidey one has a clever one by Joss Whedon), they also have a reprint of a classic Stan Lee-written comic. The Strange one is so-so, but the Spider-Man one is the classic Spider-Man Unmasked! Best buy of the past few weeks.

I don't remember that being part of his character either. Sure, he tended to be calm and not loose his cool over his emotions, but they sure as hell were displayed now and then. I'm still annoyed by the fact that they gave him back his vulnerability to fire after the 1980s JL series got rid of that affliction.

Pride of Baghdad was reviewed the week after it came out, as is the norm here. Horror comics don't appeal to me. The comic book format does not work with that genre. Couple of panels build up a scene, turn the page, boo! umm...yeah

Goliath says it to Thor; meanign that Thor just came back from the dead and Goliath was going to put him back where he came from. Goliath, who has never been used anywhere ever, except in his own first appearance, is killed. Hence, Black Goliath has the shortest "comeback" in history. Kind of like Blue Beetle.

I've been a fan of the big green fella for a while now, and have even collected every issue of the Ostrander/Mandrake series from 99-02. I always thought that J'onn was underused, given his unique perspective and multiple powers. This new series, however, just doesn't feel like the Martian Manhunter I know and love, it feels more like someone with a limited knowledge of the character tried to update him (you know, like how movie execs tried with Catwoman). He's bitter, angry and surrounded by other Martians. This is like a heavily armed Superman having a beer with his buddies who just arrived from Krypton. And yes, the spelling and grammatical errors in this comic show us that whoever is in charge of this title just doesn't give a rats ass. It's insulting.

thought it might be a good jumping on point since i have no idea about anything wild and catty. i was wrong. i think it gave me a headache just flipping through. looks pretty cool, though. just a bit too busy and crazy for me to feel safe buying ...

the last Wolverine was something of a letdown. as if the real crescendo was in part 5. not only did we know logan was not going to have his head cut off in this issue (unless, of course, his decapitated head grew back tiny arms and legs, and the other half grew back its head, creating a regular Wolverine and a mini-Wolverine ... with over-sized head), but he kicks the villain's ass (and balls) in a very predictable way, and jumping ship (shield ship) in almost the exact same way Cap did in Civil War 1, except, unlucky for logan, there was no potty mouthed fighter pilot floating his jet beneath him. even the pencils and inks got lazy toward the end. and when SPOILER! the bad guy gets blades through his eye sockets, i just didn't feel much. a great first five issues, though ...

To be honest, I skipped this review until I was in the shop today and it caught my eye on the shelf. I noticed it was very much like what DC are doing with Mystery in Space, so I picked it up and scanned it. Looked good. Decided I would head back to the office and read the review here before buying ... and I think I'll get it. That Dr. 13 thing looked weird and cool ... of all my years partially collecting DC, I never cared much for the Spectre, but am happy to give this mini a go. The Spectre's 'cool', right?

Black Goliath also kicked the crap out of Stilt Man on top of the Champion's skyscraper HQ in LA. Best Black Goliath story was from POWER MAN. Cage's woman, Dr. Claire Trevor, leaves Cage to go to her ex-husband, Bill Foster. Cage misunderstands and follows. Bill Foster is Black Goliath. Cage knocks the shit out of him but then they team up against the Circus of Crime. It is funny that he called himself Black Goliath instead of just "Goliath" but remember, the young, liberal comic guys of the time meant well. They were just white. We won't hold that against them ... too much. Believe it or not, it was kind of a financial risk featuring black characters early on. The comic book companies had problems in the South. If you look at Foster's early appearances in THE AVENGERS, if you can get reprints or back issues, the character is drawn so that you can't tell his race. And they used a bizarre tone in the coloring that really didn't look like it belonged to any racial group. Now, T'Challah, on the other hand, well Jack Kirby wasn't going to back down. In that first appearance, where the Panther lights a cigarette, you can bet it was probably even a Kool.

Kids, never do drugs...unless yer posting on site with an edit feature! That's BLAXPLOITATION GOLIATH, not BLAXPLOILTATION GOLIATH. I have no idea what Blaxpoiltation even is, unless, it's like a blaxploitation movie or comic or even novel (they had those! I have one about a pimp called DADDY COOL) that's been exposed to bacteria or something. Actually, I have a direct link to blaxploitation. Believe it or not, I used to get my ass kicked every day as a kid. I know! I wouldn't believe it either! Who'd wanna kick Buzz Maverik's ass? is what yer saying. Yer also sayin', No way would Buzz Maverik get the wrong end of a fight. But I wasn't always this cool. No, I used to get my ass kicked and my comics trashed on my home from the convenience store..okay, I still do. No, really. So Pa Maverik, the second most feared being in Japan after Godzilla and before Ghidarah the Three Headed Monster, drove me over to the home of this guy he knew who was in a blaxploitation kung fu flick called BLACK SAMURAI. This guy wasn't the star or anything but I think they hired every African American martial artist in California for that one. I asked him, "Are you going to teach me karate?" "No." "Kung fu?" "No." "Boxing?" "No." "Then, what're you gonna teach me?" "I'm gonna teach you how to kick someone's ass while not getting your ass kicked." It really came in handy. Dude in the grade above me tries to grab my comic books, I kick him in the groin. And I'm not just talking one kick. You kick and guy in the groin three or four times in a row, he'll never take your comic books again. And his friends will want to be your friend instead. This has been a public service announcement in lieu of an edit feature here at AICN. I have fulfilled my court mandated community service obligation...I hope.

I like the way he spins, with flames coming out his ass and shit. But how the hell did Ghidarah get to be a king? Last I heard, his senile mother refused to step down and was thinking of passing him over for the throne in favor of the cooler son he had with his hot late wife. Must piss him off. The thing I hate about Ghidarah is that once he showed up, Godzilla and Rodan turned good. I hate good monsters. I want metaphors for nuclear terror, like a 500 foot King Jong II stompin' through the Miracle Mile "He picks up a bus and he throws it back down...." I don't know about all these Japanese names for monsters and stuff because, like, I'm the first Gen-Xer and the Last Baby Boomer with my old man being one of the youngest soliders of WW II, the Big One. We drove American, bay-bee! But he'd watch Godzilla with me when I was kid and root like hell for him:"We coulda used that radioactive sonsabitch in the Pacific!" Make a great movie. Robert Duvall brings Godzilla to life to get revenge on the Japanese because Fat Man and Little Boy just weren't enough.

Mini-Godzilla on the cartoon was Godzookie. In the movies, it was Tadzilla. I believe Tadzilla made his appearance on MONSTER ISLAND or THE ISLAND OF LOST MONSTERS or some kind of flick like that. Gamera, Mothra, and Rodan were in that one as well. Or maybe it was DESTROY ALL MONSTERS. I dunno, but Tadzilla was in it blowing smoke rings instead of fire.

I remember an old monster mag from childhood which had a picture of Godzilla fighting a cool looking creature they called Anzilla, but I never saw it in a movie. I always called the baby "Son of Godzilla" but in another magazine I saw it referred to as "Minya".

Yes, Marvel did an Essential Godzilla about six months ago, maybe. They are only doing one printing of it, because of rights or something, so get it before it disappears. And yes, it kicks ass. How can you turn down the King of the Monsters getting picked up by Hercules? Fighting the giant robot Red Ronin? Getting sucked into space and fighting alien monsters? Being shrunk and fighting a rat in a sewer? Being sent back in time by the FF and teaming up with Devil Dinosaur? Trashing Manhattan as he fights the Avengers? Every issue written by Doug Moench, and penciled by Herb Trimpe in some of his finest work, I think.

I thought he first showed up in that movie as the imaginary friend of the chinese boy whose uncle invented some sort of robot android that gained sentience and grew to Godzilla-size for absolutely no reason; then it all turned out to be a dream sequence or somthing.

Must better comic than I would have thought and it holds up pretty well. Dark Horse did a lot of Godzilla comics, which I haven't read, but I do remember an interview with whoever the creative team was where they likened Godzilla to Lovecraft's Cthulhu, which was a brilliant take on it. I like Quentin Tarantino's idea for a Godzilla film: life under Godzilla. Dad kisses Mom goodbye, ruffles Junior's hair, gets in the car and is stomped by a giant foot. All part of life. Yeah, no Gamera on Monster Island. Of course, there's alternative verisons such as the island in an early issue of PLANETARY and the Mole Man's Monster Island in Marvel Comics.

Did a recent, uncut, un-Raymond Burred DVD version of the original GOJIRO just come out or was that the acid. Or was it the acid, but did it also really happen? Also, have you read Mark Jacobson's novel GOJIRO which is some cool bizzaro shit, with the monster a cross between Godzilla and Tyler Durden?

...this is some interesting stuff. Pop culture east begins to affect pop culture west. Was it really based on THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS, which I believe was based on something by Ray Bradbury. Sort of like how Dashiell Hammet writes RED HARVEST which Akira Kurosawa turns into YOJIMBO which Sergio Leone turns into those Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns. 80's flashback: Buzz girlfriend at the time finds SEVEN SAMURAI, YOJIMBO, THE HIDDEN FORTRESS on the shelf of El Bachelor Pad del Maverik: "Oh, god, yer into kung fu movies?" Yeah, I went for the brains. Well, really, I went for the looks. Well, really I went for, "Okay, Buzz, I'll go with you." But my point is still valid.

Cog Smooches are cute and I enjoy them, but for all of you who just can't get enough comic-ey stuff on the internet, I've decided to launch yet another weekly comics blog. Now, not only can I not do this all by myself, but I woudn't want to anyway. So I encourage all of those young, nubile wannage cogs to send me their own reviews at Louiewhiteford@yahoo.com. By no means, do I wish to unite with the vogs, or compete with my fellow cogs (even if I am but a lowly reservist, sigh...) I merely wish to help out the many comic fans out there who enjoy seeing something they wrote on the internet. (God, what a bunch of self absorbed jerks, right?)

Besides, that Turtle guy is fucking nuts and you do not want to mess with him.

Also worth noting...

LeSexy

El Vale, unfortunately as far as I know LeSexy is a dead project (for those who don't know, LeSexy was an aborted comic project by Grant Morrison and I, set in a disturbingly weird David Lynchian town in the north of Scotland, inspired by great British horror films like the original Wicker Man and Don't Look Now). I think it was decided that the story was a bit too culturally specific to the UK to be commercially viable in America, and also the themes present in the story were explored to greater effect in Grant's other works, so it was scrapped. I believe it was for a time considered for British television but ultimately I think it will go down as one of those sadly unrealized projects. I'm hoping to work with Grant again soon, either on a Seaguy sequel or perhaps something else. Thanks for the support, it's always appreciated!
