Panic Room sucked and Fight Club is the most overrated movie ever. The only outright good film he has made was "Se7en," and I came close to condemning that one because of the stupid 7 is a "v" thing. Either Zodiac is a case of a director cannabalizing his own work, or he's returning to the roots of his one truly good movie.

Seriously, Fincher can do no wrong. To all the Alien 3 haters- suck it. Its the REAL sequel to the first one. Ohhh, it dosnt have any space marines-it must suck.NO! its beautifully shot, and anyone whos watched the dvd can get a sense of how f'd the production was. Alien is gothic horror, end of story. Now why isn't fight club on the poster? easy. Its a Chuck Palahniuk book translated by Fincher. Seven and Panic room are original "noirish" films, like this one. Oh, and Panic Room was UNDERrated if anything. Seriously, whats not to like about a movie loaded with cool dark performances that takes place in a small place in one night? Any other director woulda screwed that one up big time. end of rant.

Yeah, Bobafettish is right. Any other director would have screwed that up as bad if not worse than Fincher did. At the very least Fincher was able to add a cool 'camera going through small shit' shot to that piece of crap. The film was doomed the second they revealed the intruders to be incompetent Home Alone villains. Panic Room aside, I love Fincher's style and if this has a decent script it could be great.

I like it. It doesn't alienate the female audience. The police sketches of the Zodiac Killer with the bag over his head still gives me chills, and something like that could have easily been used, along with some of the code and some of the letters he wrote... but is it necessary? Nope. This works fine. I am excited how this movie seems to be more about the men the men who are hunting him down. A nice balance between All the President's Men and Se7en. Works for me.

Fincher took a TOTALLY UNFILMABLE book and turned out a visually stunning, perfectly paced masterpiece of a movie. The fascist philosophy that drives the plot isn't supposed to be agreed with- it's a brilliantly subtle polemic on male isolation, gangs and their relation to fascism.... Fincher even got a performance out of Brad Pitt that wasn't terribly crappy. Far superior the the similar (and overrated) American Beauty

and it tanked at the Box Office, got shitty ratings and a Fox executive got fired over it. That's called the opposite of overrated. Aliens 3 was overrated, even though everyone hated it. They just didn't hate it enough. how are people saying it looked good? the whole movie was shot in a boiler room and the alien was shitty stop motion. But I digress. Anyway, best use of the bridge since A View to a Kill.

In saying that Alien 3 was so bad that despite the bad reviews and poor BO, it was still overrated. To be fair though, Fincher says he didn't like the final version and I didn't see his cut. And it was his first big movie as a director, I think. I couldn't really get into the Game but some of my friends that I usually agree with liked it so maybe I didn't give it a chance.

Alien 3 and Space Marines
by KanekoFan
Oct 12th, 2006
12:44:51 PM
When BOBAFETTISH mentioned the absence of Space Marines, he wasn't saying that was the only problem with Alien 3; he seemed to be getting at the fact that the Space Marines are one of the many thing that make Aliens such a pathetically inferior sequel to Alien, for the most part little more than a hollow fantasy for eight year old boys who like big guns. Sure, Alien 3 has its problems, but at least it doesn't try to turn a horror concept into some pre-adolescent big-guns-and-explosions action fantasy that tries to justify itself by screaming out occassionally, "Look! I'm really about issues surrounding motherhood! I'm art! Respect me! Respect me!" As for the Zodiac poster, it's a little bland. Not that it's bad, and I'm okay with the tag line, but there's nothing there to really draw me in.

Not in the movies anyway. Now they are of course but that's because of video games ripping off Aliens. I don't see how Alien, which was basically a haunted house movie, was any better than Aliens just because it wasn't as loud. They're both good, just different.

I like ALIENS as much as the next guy. But when ya make a sequel to one of the most BEAUTIFUL films ever,(seriously, theres more eye candy in Alien than a dozen of todays sci-fi's) you dont film it in crappy 1:28/1 and make the whole thing BLUE. Now, ok, every director is entitled to do their thang, but c'mon, Cameron saw the Alien and thought "Whoa id sure like to put a hundred of those in a nuclear reactor and have some soldiers shoot at em". So yeah......Fincher rules, ridley Scott Rules, and i'm gonna go watch Blade Runner. :)

I love Fincher as much as the next guy but that doesn't make Aliens any less of a classic. It had a great scipt (so many funny line), broadly drawn but memorable characters, a great Ripley, fantastic action scenes that still hold up today, actual scares, and a great ending. Aliens is one of the best sequels and a great example of what Camerocn is like when he's on the ball. Amazing that it's yet another film that talkbackers hate.

It's crazy to think that Fight Club has been out nearly 7 years, because everytime I watch it, I catch something new and it still seems more modern than half the shite that gets put out now. Talk about something that was ahead of it's time. The twist is overplayed now, but back then, when I saw it in the theater fresh out of high school, they fucking HAD me. For the years of entertainment that I've gotten just out of Fight Club, I'll be giving Fincher my money opening night.

Nah, I guess not. Cool poster, looking forward to the movie. And for the record: Aliens rocks, ( I can't believe there's any doubt about how great it is.) Alien3 sucked, (but not because of Fincher) Seven is a modern horror classic, and Fight Club is pure genius. (The Game and Panic Room were good, but ultimately flawed films)

You have all lost your fucking minds!! slone13, I guarantee that if you saw Aliens in a theater in 1986, you were not thinking "Ugh, uber-cliched space marines, how many more movies will I be forced to watch with space marines!!" In 1986, no one had ever heard of such a thing, unless they were huge Robert Heinlein fans. The fact is, Alien AND Aliens both bear repeat viewings in my house any day over Alien3. I respect it, I simply don't really want to watch it ever again. Clearly, we won't even bring up Resurrection. As far as Aliens being a "hollow male fantasy with" too many aliens, it was Cameron's creative duty to try and do something different than the first one, or everyone would just be saying "rehash, sell-out". The best series stay fresh with this approach. The ones that don't turn into a joke, or a cliche fest.

Nobody's (well, almost nobody's) saying Aliens isn't an entertaining movie. I'm a fan of it. But it's a simple, broadly drawn movie, and it evokes very little emotional response in me, and Space Marines may have been a relatively original idea at the time, but that doesn't make them any more interesting. Alien 3 is problematic, but the atmosphere and the more sublty drawn characters draw me in more.

And rightfully so. The reason it didnt score awards is because it spoke to a generation that doesn't vote on that sort of thing en masse. Oh and Aliens was awesome, no arguments.

The 1 CGI shot in Alien 3
by KanekoFan
Oct 13th, 2006
12:22:19 PM
BenBraddock, I'm sorry to tell you that, with one exception, the Alien effects in Alien 3 were not CGI, they were a mixture of animatronics and suits for the close-ups and rod puppets for the wide shots. The only CGI shot is of the Alien's head cracking at the end.

Thanks KanekoFan for setting me straight on that. Could have sworn there were a bunch of CGI shots in there, I'm thinking of the scenes where the alien is chasing the men through the tunnels and they are successively shutting the doors on it to pen it in (or have I got *that* wrong too!?).. anyway all these years I thought it was shitty CGI, turns out it was shitty animatronics ;-)

by KanekoFan
Oct 13th, 2006

The shots you are referring to are the rod puppet shots. Part of why they look CGI is because they're composited into the shots, and because the motions have a jerky quality that plagued a lot of early CGI.
The Alien 3/Aliens opinions
by KanekoFan
Oct 13th, 2006
03:41:46 PM
Let's face it, everything GOOD about Aliens has been stated and re-stated. Similarly, everybody's already long since hashed out what was BAD about Alien 3. To re-state those points now would be to add nothing. However, there hasn't been much discourse on why Aliens doesn't work for some folks, or why Alien 3 does. Thus, to keep our minds open on these movies, to continue to find new things to take away from them, it's necessary for the dissenting voices to speak up.
