Brick was seven layers of amazing, so i'll definetly give something with Rian Johnson at the helm a chance. Him and Zack Snyder should start a studio together. Fuck those two are gonna rip it up in the future.

...such positive feedback on the script. Mr. Johnson does appear to be quite a writer indeed. Can't wait.

...but I wasn't quite as taken with Brick as some were. Don't get me wrong. It was enjoyable in an experimental Sin City kind of way, but it almost seemed to precious (or precocious) to take seriously. It felt like I was watching a darker Bugsy Malone and I kept waiting for someone to bust into a musical number. Again, enjoyed what the director and various actors pulled off (making kids sound like hard boiled characters from a classic crime noir film), but it never touched me on anything approaching a "real" emotional level.

I couldn't have been more unimpressed with Brick. Read amazing things about it and thought it was corny and an absolute bore- Sure- I no longer just credit someone for trying something new- Trying something new should be the standard- the movie didn't work on any level for me.

They should give him 100 million for the budget. And now I'm going to test my line break theory.

Rian Johnson is a great new talent (loved Brick) and getting exactly what he deserves. Oh and where's the Brick backlash. Knowing ACIN talkbackers it's right around the corner.

*SMACK* "Throw one at me if you want, hash head. I've got all five senses and I slept last night, that puts me six up on the lot of you!" And from that moment I was hooked. Can't wait for this.

I interviewed Johnson last year for BRICK and this guy is as interesting and nice as his movie is cool. Think he's clever enough to have a great career. He told me about this con flick at that time but didn't want to say much more about it. Seemed to be excited about it though.
Good, so it's adults.

I thought BRICK was real well directed and all, but I couldn't get past the ludicrousness of the film-noir-in-high-school gimmick. So this one could be good, unless he's going reverse and having adults playing kids. It's like SPY KIDS, only adults! Uh oh, I better wait to hear more before getting excited about this one.

It's no big deal. I've noticed Brick isn't for everyone. Very dividing.
The thing about Brick...

that I like, is that Johnson had the gonas to stick with the novella, and made it a film-noir high school drama. He directed it with simplicity and off key horns...making it a beautiful experiment that wasn't afraid to poke fun at itself and show how ludicrous it was. (The Pin, Tug, Brendan...and The Pin's mom...priceless.) I think this kind of filmmaking is something that's dwindling in the industry. If he didn't win everyone over this time round, I for one say give the inventor another chance to wow the masses. And i fuckin loved brick. haha.

The high school thing just made it more enjoyable for me. It was like it was playing out the fantasy of what I wished life was like as a freshman.

The high school thing just made it more enjoyable for me, even if it indulged in self-referential mockery. It was like it was playing out the fantasy of what I wished life was like as a freshman. And don't think there aren't teenagers out there that could actually be these people. I guess it just couldn't do much for old, closed-minded college dudes unable to identify.

I saw "Brick" at the Aero theatre in Santa Monica several months before it was released. I had an instinct that the film would be special from its wonderful trailer, but it delivered beyond anything I could have fathomed. If he could make a film like that for only $500,000, then a twenty-mill production like "Bloom" will be something to behold. If you didn't see "Brick" during its theatrical release, I promise that you will be kicking yourself for years (or decades) to come. Easily the best film I've seen this year, and 2006 has brought us some damn fine films.

They rag on Brick but love Blade Runner for using exactly the same 'gimmick'. Nice. I loved 'em both. P.S. Points for Bugsy Malone though Roland. I loved that too.
Thanks, half vader.

Bugsy was one of my faves as a kid, so I guess I should've liked Brick more. I've got to ask you what you mean by that Blade Runner thing, though. I mean, was Harrison Ford supposed to be in high school? And Cholera's Ghost: did you really call college dudes "old?" Way to make me feel like a fossil, pal, considering I've been out of college (grad school even) for more than ten years. You're right on one count, though. I absolutely couldn't identify with the characters in Brick because they all looked, sounded and felt like they were performing a Max Fischer play. There was simply no way to take it seriously.
it's pretty simple

Blade Runner is Sci Fi with hard-boiled noir ladled over the top. Brick is high school shenanigans with the same spoonful of noir all over it. As much as I love Bugsy Malone (and had the new DVD on order until it was pulled a few months back), the conceit isn't as similar as Brick and Blade Runner. You could actually argue that Bugsy's premise is really pretty irresponsible, if you wanted to be anal about it. In opposition to pretty much everyone here though, I think the noir conceit is even more appropriate for Brick than the others. Shady dealings in an insular world with petty double-crossing and people who speak in their own baroque language which is pretty much opaque to outsiders/parents/old people? What do you think high school IS? Of course they sounded mannered. That's the point. Have you ever seen a 'natural' noir? A parent or outsider would think most clique-ey teenagers are fucking martians.
