Sucks. Majorly. I worry that Galactica in primetime would mean no "gods damnit." No stories involving abortion, or rape. Hell, the FCC fuckers would probably fine NBC for every Cylon backbone shown on the series, for fear that America's precious tiny innocent children will try to explore their own rear anatomy to see if they enjoy sex in the same illuminating way. Plus, does it have the kind of audience for NBC? Do the creators want that kind of audience? I don't know... bad vibes all around, though.

interesting possibility. seems like they'd have to clean it up for network tv though. lord knows you can show all the violence in the world on tv, but the second sex enters the equation the network execs' sphincters snap shut like a bear trap.

then they have to go balls out. I mean Ads on NBC primetime that promote it as the #1 show according to Time, NY Daily News, etc. and it has to go into a 10pm slot somewhere Mon-Thurs. No banishing to Friday or Saturday. Sunday is a maybe, if only b/c it follows football (on the west coast, could be a problem for east coast being aired early) and the stuff on ABC and CBS at that time blows. NBC also has to be hands off in terms of creative notes. Sci-Fi has to remain the network in charge. As for the Bionic Woman redux. The writer wrote Birds of Prey AND Alexander? uhh..well at least Eick is there.

I don't know. Seems like NBC could easily fuck up the show. Note from NBC suit: "Do they have to say 'Frak' so much? And does Starbuck have to be a woman? Our core nerd test groups say they prefer a man to play the part..."

I don't see it as that big a problem. They hype it like balls and start with 3.5 in Feb/March. I don't think NBC would make them change anything. Hopefully they air in HD, and Wednesday or Tuesday at 9.

Cider78, I agree. My guess is they'll keep showing it on Sci-Fi as well, tho. As for FRAK, Veronica Mars picked that one up last week as her new favorite swear word. We should all use it often and religiously, and see if we can push it into the general vernacular to the point that preachers ascend the pulpit and tell their faithful that it really is the same as using the f-bomb. And I'll get behind that even tho I still hold a soft spot for FREL as a sci-fi expletive.

Laeta Kalogridis + BIONIC WOMAN = Ginormous train-wreck
by SpyGuy
Oct 10th, 2006
08:04:06 AM
Kalogridis is one of the worst writers currently working in the industy. Her BIRDS OF PREY was disappointingly bad, with painful dialogue, poor depicitions of characters (a teenaged Black Canary with "visions" instead of a sonic scream, for example) and cheap attempts to capitalize on other hot concepts (i.e. focusing the show on "metas," who are social outcasts like X-MEN's mutants). I don't like to call people "hacks," but it her case, I think it genuinely fits...

I watched all 13 episodes of Kalogridis' Birds of Prey and hardly found anything to enjoy. Okay, there were two: The chemistry between Ashley Scott and the black cop dude. And Mia Kirschner as Harley Quinn. As her first appearance as a live-action character, Harley was depicted a crazed soccer mom type. Yet somehow Kirschner sort of made it work. (I really hope Chris Nolan's The Dark Knight has Harley in it -- Kristen Bell would be perfect.)

I don't trust NBC. I think they might frak up BSG. I sense meddling. The only bonuses I see are HD (it'll up the PQ of my transatlantic cable ;D) and possible higher ratings for the show.
I don't trust the networks though!! I want glowing spines, controversial storylines and copious amounts of fraks.

P.S. frak is my f-bomb, and motherfrakker is my m-f-bomb! They just roll of the tongue better and I can say them infront of anybody and not offend them. ;)

Bionic Woman as metaphor

I'm intrigued by what the article intimates. The screenwriter's experience aside, this could be interesting as a post-feminist take, since the original series was at the height of 2nd wave feminism. Bionic Woman certainly holds a place in cultural history as being one of the first shows (along with Wonder Woman, which was on at the same time) to focus on a female 'superhero'. Before there was Buffy Summers, before there was Sydney Bristow, there was Jaime Summers. Gotta respect.

BSG on NBC in HD is OK

`As long as they don't frak it up and change things, or try to make it possible for people to jump in the middle of the show by backtracking on the story. I would like to see BSG on a network that actually has HD broadcasts for their shows shot in HD. SciFi is lame in that regard, having a widescreen show (obviously shot in HD) but broadcasting on a back-of-the-lineup, low-power, analog cable channel. BSG could look gorgeous, but instead- like everything on SciFi- looks sort of washed out and blurry. [p] As for the Bionic Woman, I think that might just suck. It would be a bionic Buffy or Alias, and you all know it.

If we're going to talk about single female 'superhero' leads on TV, then there are really only two groundbreaking series worth discussing: Police Woman and La Femme Nikita. Bionic Woman, as much as I personally enjoyed it, was a glorified retread of Six Million Dollar Man in that they recycled many of the same story ideas, even down to the stock footage. The Bionic Woman is only notable for Lindsay Wagner, who brought far more depth to the role than expected, and walked off with a much-deserved Emmy for it. Wonder Woman was nothing more than a tarted-up comic book which is only remembered for two things... and they were both under Lynda Carter's costume. And everything Sidney Bristow learned she copied from La Femme Nikita. Police Woman was the first series to place a single female 'hero' in a gritty, realistic environment even if it seems dated today. And La Femme Nikita wasn't just groundbreaking in its complex portrayal of a covert female assassin, it was prophetic in its exploration of terrorism and the morally questionable tactics used by both sides. For example, the supposed 'good guys' tortured people every week while terrorists used every means at their disposal to attack innocents, in ways that we see in headlines every day now. And that was explored five years before 9/11! So, if you're gonna parcel out respect for female heroes on TV but fail to mention Police Woman and La Femme Nikita, no one should take you seriously. (And no, I didn't forget Xena; it was just a silly show, and everyone making it knew that, too.)

"Instead of focusing on terrorism and militarism, the new "Bionic" will explore the role of professional women in contemporary society and how they juggle their various roles." What the fuck ever. Look, I don't give a shit how you feel about the war in Iraq, (personally I am for it, and I make no excuses about that) but I respect the (generally) liberal agenda against it. Who wants war reallY? But this leftist anti-American bullshit that Hollywood is putting ont he table with this Bionic Woman sucks Nanci Pellosi's whithered old cunt. The bottom line is this: If you speak English as your native tounge, your nation has been attacked by Islamo-fascists. What is so wrong with a Bionic Bitch running around on PMS and beating the shit out of Akmed and Marwan? "Derka, Derka. Fuck you my friend, I think this American special forces bitch means business. She just threw that car at us!!!" Lighten up you P.C. pseudo-intellectual morons. There is nothing wrong with fighting terrorism.

I'm not so much worried that NBC would change BSG, but they will cancel it as soon as it doesn't meet whatever unrealistic expectations they might have. Of course they'll switch the timeslot twice a year and never show repeats. Add that in with the fact that audiences typically won't start watching a series that's this far in and you have the recipe for disaster. ...... As for the bionic woman fighting terrorism, here's why stuff like that is stupid: Pit a superhero against terrorists and you'd run out of terrorists. If superheros are as incompetent as our government then why would I want to watch them? Or are they gonna have Osama with his own army or nanobots? The word terrorist, as it's used today, just means poor, low-tech soldier (in the true sense of the word, only our media and government qualifies as terrorists, since they're the ones always trying to scare us). It'd be ridiculous pitting bionics against them. Then again I sure as shit wouldn't want to watch a show that "explore(s) the role of professional women in contemporary society and how they juggle their various roles". I suppose they could call it, "Desperate Bionics."

Ok in order, Bionic Woman re-imaging, remake whatever the fuck you want to call it, I have figured out the only way to avoid these remakes now is to freeze myself for 100 years so that I can wake up and watch these remakes as they air without knowing how much they pissed on the original versions which were made while I was asleep! Actually, thinking about it I will probably still recognise the garbage as unimaginative shit without a single original idea! As for "BSG on NBC in HD", a note for all the boys with their big toys, a dog turd in HD is a dog turd with more detail!! I would much rather have a good show not in HD then a watered down version thats nice and shiny! Nuff said.

Oct 11th, 2006

But then realized, yeah, they'd have to make some kind of changes to it. Broadcast networks aren't too ready to stand by their product, and execs especially won't put up a huge fight over some science fiction show. Personally, I always thought even frak wouldn't make it past net censors for too long. Yeah, it's technically not a swear, but someone could start complaining it's too close. I mean, just saying "frak" is one thing, but how many times would they let "go frak yourself" and "mother frakker" go past. Remember, someone will demand we "think about the children" and worry about their kids saying "Frak you!" to their parents...

And reboot Steve Austin, but keep it canon. As for BSG, NBC will ruin it.

Whatever you might say about the quality of the shows - they're probably cheese-fests but I haven't seen them since I was a kid when they were first on - but you cannot deny the iconic power of those early feminist heroes. Gloria Steinem even put Wonder Woman (the comic character not the tv show) on the cover of the first Ms. magazine in 1972, and Bionic Woman is frequently cited by feminist scholars as an influential cultural icon. I'm not saying your wrong about Police Woman (and I certainly remember that show, too), but I just don't see it mentioned nearly as much as Bionic or Wonder. Though it's interesting that these 70's feminist icons all have titles describing their woman-ness. But if a reimagining is to work, it has to be smart and not gimmicky, because the potential for awfulness would be huge.
