The imdb boards are pretty heavy on this movie, actually. I guess the Rocky fans are really sincerely devoted. I just saw the first one last week, didn't think too much of the film, but Sly's video commentary is actually really endearing. And after looking at the rest of the sub-Oscar crap coming out til Christmas, this may be the only decent thing to see for mistletoe season.

Rocky is such an awesome icon of cinema. I always have, and always will be a fan of Rocky. He was one of the first characters that ever motivated me in my day-to-day life. How can you not watch any of the first four movies and feel motivated? Your heart beats faster, you get a smile on your face, and you cheer him on - maybe not verbally, but at least you wish him well in the ring. I don't think I'm articulating myself very well, but I do think Rocky FANS will understand what I'm trying to say. Those of you who have never seen the movies, yet choose to come here and bash Rocky can go boof a goat. Go Rocky!!!!!!

These 80s action heroes are still making films because they HAVEN'T been replaced. The films they made serve a purpose, vicarious wish fulfillment fantasies. Big, overblown, bombastic films starring hyperbolic exaggerations of maacuinity. Its a counter the the SNAGS or the Metros or any other attempt to subtly redefine what it is to be an action man. Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kurt Russell and the rest haven't been replaced because none of the current stars have stepped up and been willing to be 100% man on film, sure it's a superficially simplistic and cliched representation of masculinity but it's welcome and necessary. Rocky Balboa will hopefully mark the beginning of a resurgence of the unapologetic male. Male and proud, sure that sounds a bit gay but that's exactly what needs redressing, the fact that the buddy dramas have now morphed to the point where they are actively subverted from the pre-production stage rather than by theorists at some later point. Men these days need to stand up, walk to the window, stick your head out and shout at the top of your lungs "I AM SPARTACUS!!"

why go back to this particular well? The character had been laid to rest in the early 90's, quite some years ago. If he's looking for a comeback part then why not try something new and different? Eastwood is in his 70's; you don't see him still playing The Man With No Name or Dirty Harry. Ditto Sean Connery. Trying to resurrect ROCKY and RAMBO reeks of desperation. I'm sure the man doesn't need the money, so why is he potentially embarrasing himself? And after the turd that was ROCKY V, there's no way I'm seeing this puppy at the cineplex. I'de love to see a retired Dirty Harry brought in on a case as a consultant then watch as the story evolves from there. Just as Jim Kirk equals William Shatner, if audiences like the characters, if the stories are good and if the original actor is still around then there's no need to lay anything to rest. Those decrying modern action movies and lamenting the passing of the '80's shoot-em-ups are missing the point. Action adventure movies during the 1980's and the early '90's were based around the cult of personality, for example guys like Schwarzenneger, Stallone, Norris, Bronson, even Mel Gibson. Modern action movies are just as good, but they're different. They're less based on a particular actor's personality than they are idea or concept based. Then, the star was the draw; now, the story is. Think about the giant action hits we have today. The actors are basically cyphers (think Keanu Reeves) who serve to dramatize an interesting story. Even really good actors are now slaves to the movie's concept. People don't go to the movies really to see Tobey Maguire, Orlando Bloom or Johnny Depp. They go to see Spiderman or Captain Jack Sparrow. Matt Damon and Paramount realize this and they've fashioned the Jason Bourne series accordingly. The two films have so far built on the mythology of Bourne as a character, and though Damon is one of the better young actors working today, he is a prisoner to the concept of the Bourne character. That is why occasional attempts to launch 'action stars' have not taken off (see, The Rock Dwayne Johnson and now apperently Cena). In addition, if you recall Vin Diesal's hits have been due to the strength of the particular concept or idea: Pitch Black, Triple XXX, aka eXtreme Bond.

It isn't exactly the death of big ultraviolent 80s actioneers that I lament (at least not alone), I do lament the "Stars" willing to allow themselves some comfortable ground over which to tread and allow their filmic personality to be infused with these personae. Some may call it typecasting but as you rightly point out it's slightly more akin to branding or brand marketing. Yes Bourne is built to be of stronger appeal to the audience than Damon but ultimately I'd argue that while the franchise is intact should the actor roam, or worse, I think box office suffers when audiences can no longer head off to see the latest "Steve McQueen film" assured of a certain type of guaranteed filmic pleasure regardless of what the particular narrative is about. Also I think it's too early to claim "failure to launch" for any of the newly manufactured action stars like Rock or Cena, if they are prepared to pay their dues then their time will come. Their films just need to engage in dual marketing where both teh star and alternately the film story are advertised as worth your money.

One of the reasons Johnson will finally break through is due to his apparent screen charisma and a modicum of acting ability. Although his movie choices aren't serving him well, he seems to be improving his acting chops with each role. But he will finally break through when a good writer pens for him a great script with a fantastic premise for a lead character. Funnily enough, it seems he may end up becoming a huge star actor appearing in dramas and comedies rather than an action hero. At the end of the day writer/producers like Abrams, Sorkin, and Kelley are the ones largely responsible for the quality of TV shows, and this is beginning to happen in feature films as well. For the most part, the actors are largely interchangeable.

...and I'm taking my 7 year old daughter, who loves the Rocky movies too. Unless of course it opens on December 24th or 25th. I never knew how incomplete my life was until I learned they were making Spiderman 3, Die Hard 4, and Rocky 6. Haters miss the point of the Rocky movies, and arguably never went through a major life sequence where they had to work hard and long to achieve a distant goal. That's what it's all about. The movies are not about boxing per se, but about life challenges and overcoming expectations in the face of adversity. That's how Rocky 6 can work, if it's done correctly. And thank God SPOILER Adrian is dead.
