Film music has been in a slump this decade. Nope, I'm not one of those "everything new sucks" people, just a film music fan since the 70's, and each year that passes I buy fewer new scores, because they simply don't merit relistening. The drone is all these days--music isn't a part of the whole, it is just a hum in the background meant to cue the audience as to what emotion they're supposed to be feeling--anxiety, mostly. Film music that adds something on its own is considered dated, silly, or "manipulative". (What part of art ISN'T manipulative in some way?) So I rely on your articles here to point me towards interesting new stuff. Since Goldsmith's passing there hasn't been anyone I am really into in a must-buy-the-CD way except Portman and Newman, and both have disappointed lately. So keep on with the film music articles, and thanks to Harry for putting you here.

ABOMINABLE is available on Schifrin's Aleph Records Label and can be acquired through www.screenarchives.com. SHINOBI and THE HOST are available overseas through www.yesaisa.com (a great site!). I have not yet heard any news of a release for PAN'S LABYRINTH or THE FOUNTAIN although I would imagine a CD will come out around the time their respective films are released.

Ya, I can't disagree with you. I try not to be the sour puss either but I too find myself less enthused about new film music every year. I scour the industry looking for great music and it is definitely still out there. You just have to look a little harder than in previous decades.

I just heard from Clint Mansell that the album will be released on Nonesuch Records on November 21st.

I am always happy to read your stuff, you're knowledgable and you're a good writer. I know there's not much going on for your to report on in terms of "news" (compared to the rest of the site) but maybe you could do a "Music Score Shelf" article, to at least keep us abreast of new releases and even old scores that we may not have given a look from years past? Just an idea, I am suggesting you write more because you're doing a great job!

A "Music Score Shelf" would be most welcome. With the explosion of new media in the last ten years, we have to look a little harder for good stuff. Back in the 70's I could wander down to the local chain store and see Capricorn One and snatch it up and know I was getting pretty much all of the new releases. But now with all these small labels, it's hard to keep up. (I didn't know about the Capricorn One original tracks being released until they were sold out. I've had them for a long time but I would have liked a clean version.) Here in Boston there's crap on the pop stations but I can listen to the college stations and hear good new music all day long. Similarly, I'd love to see ScoreKeeper have a more regular "review" column--not just a listing of new stuff, but a list of suggestions of stuff he's liked in the past weeks.
