Yeah Wild Wild West and I Robot had a lot of lame out of place catchphrases, but I think that Francis Lawrence didn't goofy up Constantine (yeah I know it wasn't as good as the comic) and I don't think he'll cheese up the apocolypse. And I think that Will Smith looks pretty good in the trailers for that tearjerker he has coming out.

is not a vampire/monster. the movie is different from the book in that the dog is a companion to neville. also, those fema trailers are what neville works out of because he is a virologist (also different from the book). instead of him spending years teaching himself microbiology, the screenwriters take the easy out and make him a scientist. LAME!

Generally I'm all in favor of giving film makers some interpretive license when you're dealing with an adaptation like this, but there was just so much that worked so very well in the original story...why make these changes? It makes me wonder what the film makers actually liked about the premise so much that they just had to acquire the rights. Was it the name? Really? Just the name? Shit.

I've given up hope on this movie now. I really hoped for a gritty, tough as nails "I am legend" adaptation. Now we get the glossed up, Big Willy style version. It's a shame though 'cause Will Smith can act. Here's a man alone in the world, trying to survive while being haunted and attacked by filthy bloodsuckers each and every night. How does one not go utterly insane?! This could have been one hell of a psychological thriller/horror. Now we get Will Smith, Fresh Prince-ing his way through this film with big guns and one-liners…and another thing! That car is just too damn shiney!

Script review

Sep 26th, 2006

http://scriptzone.forumculture .net/ftopic16.I-AM-LEGEND-Scri pt-Review.htm#bottom I AM LEGEND by Akiva Goldsman Based on the script by Mark Protosevich Previous Revisions by John Logan and Neal Jimenez Based on the novel by Richard Matheson Script dated July 11th 2006 I'm back. Took 2 years to find a script worth reviewing, but it finally happened. I've read numerous screenplays during my retirement. I need to address one thing: the current state of American screenwriting. It's awful. For every Zach Helm (the next Charlie Kaufman), we have 10 idiots writing Scary Movie 5 or Bring it On 3. Original voices are harder and harder to find these days. Just look at the Academy Awards last year, it was almost a big-budget Spirit Awards ripoff. Indie and foreign cinema have some very fascinating voices. Somehow Hollywood has lost it's edge in the past 5 years. No one seems to be making interesting and intelligent studio pictures. The bottom-line has taken over and the studio execs are scared *beep* to greenlight anything remotely different. Thank god for the specialty divisions are doing something different. (WIP, Paramount Vantage, Fox Searchlight etc...) Eventhough my tastes are pretty much indie these days, I still enjoy a big-budget spectacle from time to time. I've read 2 kickass high-profile 2007 screenplays. Goldsman's I Am Legend and David Goyer's Jumper. Hopefully I'll have the time to review Jumper before TIFF but it's an amazing ride. Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) has another shot at starting a fantastic franchise. I like Warner Brothers. They have four of the most intriguing films of the fall: The Departed (adored the script), The Fountain, The Good German and Blood Diamond. They've had a rough summer with Poseidon and Superman under-performing. Their 2007 line-up will be highlighted by I AM LEGEND. ROBERT NEVILLE (Will Smith) is the last man on earth. He hunts down deers off Park Avenue in New-York City. During the day, he finds food and equipments to continue his existence. Before sundown, he goes back to his bunker residence awaiting daytime again. A former army virus-expert, he's trying to discover a cure for the virus that has mutated 90% of the population. Those 'infected' are allergic to sunlight and UV light. They eat whatever they can find. Neville is immuned to the virus and uses his own blood to find a serum. He broadcast a message everyday on the radio to have survivors meet him at the South Street Seaport at noon. We flashback between Robert's memories of how the whole infection began and how he lost his family. Finally, one day he's had enough. He decides at the sundown to take on the whole infected army. (His idea of suicide...) Just as he's about to collapse from the evil onslaught, a young woman called ANNA and a boy ETHAN appear. Is he dreaming? I need to say I've never read the legendary script that Mark Protosevich wrote or Matheson's novel. With that in mind, I'm not able to tell you how faithful the adaptation is. But I'll say this, it's a fascinating story. I like the script from beginning to end. Goldsman, who's usually either great or totally off, has managed to write a very strong storyline. It reminded me of the first half of 28 Days Later. I still think Danny Boyle's film is seriously flawed. The first half of that movie is KICKASS. It's one of the most brilliant piece of sci-fi cinema. Unfortunately, the whole military-castle second half is awful. It seriously sucks. Now imagine the first half stretched to 2 hours with a bigger budget, an amazing location (NYC instead of London) and more drama. That's I AM LEGEND for you.

Complete with the love interest having a kid brother who's infected. Neville will use his blood to save the boy. Anna will become infected and join "the family" killing her own brother. Neville will give his life to save her and hand the rest of the syrum to the leader of the humans who in this update will be left wing bloggers or some crap instead of the hippies. Maybe this would be cool if we could at least get Mattheius and the Family to be real vampires this time even with the irradiated albino skin, the robes and the sunglasses. That would be bad ass. Who's playing the Ben Cartman/Matheius role anyhow.

Ok, you're the only man left, so some might argue that you'd treat yourself by stealing a fun car. But that would only last about 2 minutes before you realize no one will care what car you are in, and you should probably find yourself a nice big car that you can gather supplies in, or a nice gas efficient car, since after a while, the gas in those pumps will run out. And the dog is bored cause he knows how lame this movie will be. Transformers, I Am Legend..what next? Hyperion, but they'll make it contemporary, and Colin Farrel will play The Shrike, which will be less of a living killing machine, and more of a sexy irish guy?

I wouldn't trust the word of a guy who praises the work of goldsman and goyer, two of the biggest (and by that i mean BIGGEST) Hacks working in the system, and then runs down a very solid (albeit contrived) sreenplay from Garland and Boyle. A straight I Am Legend adaptation would be an amazing film. Will Smith could even pull it off properly, because he has enough natural charm and charisma to be alone on screen for 3/4s of a movie. But of course, Akiva wouldn't know a good simple story if it fucked him in the ear. The storyline needs to build to the best ending in horror lit., including the eponymous final three words of Mathieson's masterpiece. Fuck Akiva Goldsman for thinking he could "jazz" up the story, and fuck anyone else that is involved in the production of this film, in any way , shape or form.

I agree with you 100% about the current group of Hollywood decision-makers (Is there something in the water?). However, with respect to I AM LEGEND, for me, the jury is still out. IMHO The issue with Will Smith movies is that just about all of them are entertaining (excluding Wild Wild West of course), just not in the way we expect them to be.

The book that this film is supposedly based on is classic and brilliant. While I don't doubt that Francis lawrence will be able to pull it off visually (I liked Constantine for the most part), and Will Smith can act (I even liked I, Robot, though it did rape the source material quite thoroughly), I expect that Goldsman's script will be chock full of oneliners and lame concepts borrowed from tired and dated films. The main problem will be the lack of the iconic ending of the book; Hollywood does not have the balls to end it this way. Forget the car and the dog and the woman and her kid - yeah that sucks, but the book is ultimately about change, about evolution (among other things) and Hollywood as usual will dumb down anything that suggests that Human Beings aren't the ultimate and undefeatable species on the planet. Thank god for the red necks and retards that continue to pack theaters to see low concept high budget drivel so that Hollywood continues to serve it up fresh and steaming. I don't know what I would do without Fast and Furious 3 - we couldn't get anyone in America to do it so we went overseas. This movie will suck, I am almost certain, though i still hope that it won't, that this is all some elaborate prank and they are shooting a movie written by someone who knows how to read and write instead of just shitting on a page for Opie and hoping he can do something with it. End of rant.... for now.

Will,

We like you. We liked you in Men In Black. We liked you in Independence Day. We liked you in Enemy of the State. You're a good actor, and you certainly have charisma. What you don't have- and you MUST know this- is gravitas. At least, you never show it in movies. Directors seem to want Men In Black Will, or Independence Day Will, and you give it to them because at the end of the day the studio signs your checks.

But here's the problem Will; The people who cast you in this movie have no respect for the source material. By accepting this role, and playing it the way it is on the page- flaws and all- you're perpetuating the idea that Hollywood can shit all over Richard Matheson's wonderful story and get away with it. It's not your fault, but your role in all this is as an enabler. Because you're playing this part- which was obviously tweaked and written with your style of acting in mind- you're supporting the Hollywood trend of bastardizing a good book in exchange for some popcorn entertainment.

I'm asking you, Will Smith, to back out of this project and site the reason as being "The producers, screenwriters, and director have no respect for the source material, and I can't have that sort of lack of respect for art on my conscience." or something similar. Step up, Will, and show us you aren't just taking a paycheck and saying what's written in a poorly authored screenplay. Show you have some integrity as an ARTIST, Will, and tell the producers to give you a script that doesn't shit all over Matheson's book.

Maybe you do have gravitas. You used to be a serious actor, and I've seen you get pretty serious in some movies. But you always seem to fuck that up in favor of doing something disrespectful and silly, like "I, Robot". Perhaps it's time you showed Hollywood and the world that you're not just "Independence Day Will Smith" and "Men in Black Will Smith" and that you can pull out the serious "Ali Will Smith" in something besides a docudrama. INSIST on a new shooting script that is closer to the book, Will.

If you do this, you will earn legions of fans, impress the industry, and gain some respect from critics and moviegoers alike.

OR. . . You could just do what they tell you to do, whip out the bad puns and one-liners, and act in a movie that has almost nothing to do with the story intended by the original author, damning the fans to another 20-year wait for a proper adaption of this classic novel.

Your choice. Surprise me, Will. Do the right thing.

Next Year!

From the look of the pics it appears that the virus may not be far along. Maybe that's why Smith is driving the clean car and wearing regular clothes. Perhaps this is the beginning? I certainly hope they don't toss out the premises he's been doing this for years. That's the whole story.

You know what the closing scene is going to be? Smith meets some government official, dons some black shades and goes "You know what the difference is between you and me? I'm Legend." I bet they got the rights of the book just for that one scene.
I hope he wears a toque with 1 ear sticking out

The Mark Protosevich draft of the script was awesome

But it was set in L.A. (it's unclear at this point whether moving the setting to NY will make a difference) and it sure as hell didn't have any Will Smith-style one-liners in it. If this movie has a popcorn tone and isn't dark and serious, I will not see it.

Considering all we've seen of this movie are shots of cars in the street, this could really go either way. Wait untill we see some vampires or something. One things for sure though, this movie will be the ultimate in fake moldy grass effects.

They tried to shoehorn him in and make it a 'buddy' film (UGH!), but didn't happen. Logan's script was terrible. It had to have been written with Arnold in mind (cigars, hummers). I liked Prosotevich's script but the ending is not good. I also heard that there is no longer the "central" hemocyte, Cortman/Mathias. So expect more action and less exposition.

The stuff you guys are saying about it doesn't sound at all like the script I read. And I'm pretty sure the one I read was set in L.A., and the sequence where the guy goes back to his old house is set in Palos Verdes.

If so, that's the Logan script. His had Neville in a house in PV. But considering this thing has been bouncing around for 10 years who knows. Yes if you don't put in a comment it sends you to the preview page I wasn't crazy about the way Emma was reworked in that one.

I’m diggin’ it and lookin’ forward to this retelling of the tale. I like that fact that Will Smith in the driver’s seat – he’s fun to watch and is a fine entertainer. Opening night – no doubt.
